down. i heard a woman screaming at the top of her lungs and i knew something was wrong. >> reporter: and again we have very little information about who these youngsters were, where they are from. we are hoping to learn more from park officials. of course, this is not the first time that someone has been injured or killed here at yosemite from a falling tree limb. at this point it is hard to know whether the drought, the dryness, the dehydrated trees, whether that played any role. we will be here and gathering information and will have more for you tonight on abc 7 news at 6:00. live at yosemite, laura anthony, abc 7 news. the last person killed by a fallen tree in yosemite was a 27-year-old concession worker in 2012. a wind storm dumped a tree limb on to his tent. in 2013 one was working as a counselor near yosemite. east bay woman died when a tree crashed into the camp fire

seating area next to the cafeteria. another popular camp site at yosemite will close down because of a dangerous bacterial infection. park workers just finished spraying insecticide. i child became ill and had to be hospitalized. two squirrels have died. the camp will close monday through friday for spring. it is carried by rodents and spread by flees. health officials say the risk to humans is low. here is a startling number. 400 san jose police officers have left since voters approved pension benefit cuts three years ago. there is new hope that that exodus will stop with a tentative contract deal reached today. david louie is live at city hall with details. >> reporter: measure b passed in 2012 was a really tough pension

benefit cut program. the san jose police force dwindled down to 900. it has been very difficult to recruit and retain officers. peace may be at hand between the city skplt police union. it has been a long time since you have seen the mayor smiling in the presence. they think the tentative settlement they negotiated will restore morale, stop officers from leaving and increase police patrol. >> more officers are likely to stay with our police department and not resign or retire and will help attract with a more competitive package. >> reporter: the deal calls for a 5% pay raise. then an increase next year and a call for all parties to work on a new plan to work on pension costs put to voters in november of 2016. >> we will be going back to voters in november and can move

forward with this deal today. that is the critical thing certainty at the same time we know will be checking with voters in november. the 900 members of the police union will vote this weekend. >> this global settlement package is good not only for the police department and fire and unions. it is good for our city and citizens. >> reporter: a signing bonus will be offered to san jose officers who left for other departments. >> as far as bringing other people back that will take time. the other thing is going to absolutely help our academy numbers. >> reporter: 18 recruits graduated from the police academy. in san jose, david louie, abc 7 news. >> the parents of a woman shot and killed by san jose police one year ago today have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the officer who shot her and the police department. police say 19-year-old refused

to drop a cordless power drill. the officer mistook the drill for a machine gun. a police report shows she called 911 claiming she was going to shoot family members. the lawsuit argues officer had a scope on his rifle and should have identified the drill. they say the officer did not properly know how to deal with mentally ill suspects. >> your only tool is a hammer everything looks like a nail. so we would like this not to occur in the future and we are really looking to effect change. >> abc 7 news called for reaction to the lawsuit and so far no comment. >> three officers and a prominent criminal defense attorney have been arrested in the death of a man who went missing in 2012. corey kaufman's body was found nearly two years ago.

officials called his death suspicious. he made a living recycling scrap metal. deputies say a man threatened kaufman in 2012 during a dispute over money. a total of nine people were arrested in connection to his death but we are waiting for more details. an emergency meeting is about to get underway in san francisco for students caught in an educational limbo. thousands of students and more than 100 in san francisco cannot get high school diplomas because the state board of education cancelled the california exit exam test given in july. students who have not passed the test now don't have a way of graduating. the board of education will consider doing away with exit exam requirements and handing out diplomas without the state's okay. >> students contacted and being told that their admission was going to be rescinded because they didn't have a diploma. >> abc 7 news reporter is at today's meeting and talks to a

student caught in this dilemma. oakland unified is having a job fair for potential candidates. like many districts oakland is experiencing a shortage of teachers. lyanne melendez is live with more on how it is going. they have a lot of people to hire. >> reporter: a lot of people showed up, dan, to this job fair. the school district did its job as they put out the word early on. a few candidates say we saw your tweets and saw your stories on abc 7 news and it paid off. tony handy already works at another school district but wants to teach closer to oakland. >> i want to go where needed. i feel that many students today can use more role models that are on time all the time. >> reporter: dozens of candidates showed up for today's job fair. oakland unified is hoping this will help find many qualified teachers. school starts in about a week.

>> i am used to the public school system. i am from the bay area but was raised in the private school system. >> reporter: teachers specializing in certain areas have been hard to find. >> math, science, special education, p.e. particular for women or female p.e. teachers. >> reporter: oakland needs to hire about 70 teachers. this shortage is going on in several districts in california. baby boomers are retiring and pink slips given year after year discouraged many people from continuing or getting into the field of education. the number of credentials awarded in california dropped severely during the years of the great recession. >> we will be much closer. we will definitely be much closer. and we are going to get as far as we can and then we will continue this work. >> i think you would be a good fit. >> reporter: tony handy was

in the debate. the decision means christy o'donnell will not be able to die with the help of a physician in california. melanie woodrow joins us with reaction. >> reporter: she has lung cancer and says she wants to die peacefully. today a judge said the decision was for the legislature, not the court. christy o'donnell was one of several people fighting for the right to die in san francisco superior court today. >> i am disappointed but i want to make clear that my crying does not reflect that i am hopeless because i am not. >> reporter: attorney katherine tucker is representing physicians who support o'connell's wishes. tucker and other plaintiffs attorneys were seeking an injunction that would protect from prosecution for giving a lethal dose of medication to a mentally competent terminally ill patient who could decide whether or not to take the

medication. >> we represent physicians who have patients dying horrible deaths. >> reporter: the attorney general's office along with the san francisco district attorney's office argued it was not a decision for the court but rather one for the legislature. >> technically there is no court decision that still stands for a court in the united states found a fundamental right to physician-assisted suicide. >> reporter: judge goldsmith agreed. >> this we have enormous far reaching life and death implications cht. >> reporter: supporting o'donnell dan diaz, brittany maynard's husband. she moved to oregon so she could pass away peacefully. in san francisco, abc 7 news. a former calfootball player is suing the university for medical malpractice.

he suffered concussions. he now says he has permanent neurological injuries and accuses of failing to prevent concussions and failing to warn about long term consequences and responded and said everyone involved is dedicated to the safety of student athletes. the coalition of california civil rights and community health groups filed a complaint over physical education. the allegeds failing to provide quality p.e. the complaint comes after 37 districts settled the lawsuit demanding the state provided physical education during the school day. san francisco unified was one of the districts. a group of young americans is suing the obama administration for its inaction on climate change. the nonprofit filed a lawsuit on behalf of 21 children ages 8 to 19 from new york to california who say they have a

constitutional right to live in a country that is habitable. >> we will see whether or not our federal government has the guts to put together a national climate recovery plan that will work for these kids and future generations. >> the group's attorneys are based in burlingame. a bay area sheriff's deputy drowned in lake tahoe yesterday while trying to help a friend. police say contra costa county sheriff's deputy carlos francis was paddleboarding and kayaking near el dorado beach. investigators say his sister fell off her kayak and friend helped her back on but thought he was in distress and that is when he jumped in to help. >> heroically sacrificed his life in the pursuit of trying to save the life of another while on lake tahoe.

francisco with a maker engineering lab. mayor brown says he will dedicate time to help the students succeed. >> i will bug the superintendent and the principals. i will bug everybody to make sure that these children get everything that they deserve. >> the school also will have a health clinic on campus that will be open to the bay view community. classes begin on monday. apple is building a self driving car. the company is scouting secure locations in the bay area to test it. in may apple's team met with officials. the old concord station. the base is being turned into a high security testing ground. google started testing various self driving cars on the streets of mountain view. apple declined to comment on the report. speaking of apple and cars the tech company wants to bring fighter jet technology to your car windshield.
