wearing white polo shirts. >> good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> i'm ama daetz. we're following a big story. this one in yosemite national park. >> tragedy after a tree limb fell on two children, killing them. the national park service is trying to figure out why that branch fell. they were camping near curry village. laura anthony is had hiv with the latest on the tragedy. haura? >> reporter: we don't know the names or ages of the two young people, except that below age 18, part of a larger group, and not siblings, not related. >> it's devastating. >> reporter: it happened in an instant, said this man who was awakened by a tremendous sound. >> i heard a loud crash. it was a tree that crushed two

people in a tent. and i heard a lot of screaming and i wasn't sure what was going on. >> reporter: a large limb from a black oak had fallen on a tent at upper pines camp ground. park rangers rushed to the scene but it was too late. >> unfortunately two young people were in the tent, minors under 18. the tree branch fell and struck them. and unfortunately, they died. >> reporter: the camp ground is packed with tourists from around the world this time of the year. many making reservations a year in advance. upper pines is popular with families because of its majestic view of half dome. >> these people did nothing wrong. they were in an established campsite. >> reporter: park officials did not close the camp ground. an investigation underway to determine why the tree failed. this is what draws people here this time of the year and especially to that upper pines

camp ground. this incredible view of half dome. at this point, they're telling us this is just a tragic accident. in yosemite, laura anthony, abc7 news. >> laura, thank you very much. the last person killed was a 27-year-old concession worker in 2012. a wind storm dumped a tree limb on to his tent 2013, a camp counselor died when a tree fell during breakfast. another popular campsite will close down because of the plague. park workers just finished spraying insecticide 17 miles from the valley floor. a child got sick and had to be hospitalized. now, two squirrels have died from plague. the camp will close on monday through friday for more

spraying. it's carried by rodents and spread by fleas. health officials say the right after this -- to humans is safe. now, students who finished school in may but are blocked to get a high school diploma. we are now in san francisco with the details. katie? >> reporter: the diplomas are ready, and san francisco is stepping up after a massive oversight from the board of education and state legislature, they're inside, discussing this resolution, but is it expected to pass? let me give you some background to expect this. the state ledge

problem is that school districts cannot give out diplomas until the exam is passed or the test no longer a requirement so students are required to take a test that is no longer available. for san francisco unified school district that, is what 104 students, one woman missed the english portion by six points. >> i came to the united states two years ago knowing any english. i met a lot of goals. my teachers supported me. >> reporter: all three have been accepted to san francisco state and classes start in less than two weeks. they missed the exit exam but couldn't retake it until july because it wasn't offered. waiting until october would have jeopardized their college dream. >> i'm really grateful.

>> there is not expected to be any backlash, since the state is planning on phasing out the exit exam. it's just been a bizarre timing issue where this one class, the class of 2015 was stuck in the middle, not able to take the exam but not exempt from them. it looks like it's going to be righted tonight here in san francisco and other school districts are expect to have had follow suit. katie, thank you. an off duty contra costa she have's deputy drowned while trying to help a friend. south lake tahoe police say he was paddle boarding with his girlfriend, sister and a male friend near el dorado beach. the sister and friend fell into the lake. the friend was in distress so he jumped into to help. he was our colleague and friend.

police say the suspect had a gun so they fired but this is a situation that sparked outrage from some members of the community. let's show you what happened wednesday night after the shooting, dozens of people gathered here. they managed to shut down traffic sometime. the group also vandalized one business. they had been accusing police of an unjustified shooting but according to a preliminary investigation, police say he was facing the officers and was armed. and an attorney for the police union told the san francisco chronicle body cameras show the suspect was aiming a gun at them. now, we just heard from the sister of the girlfriend of the 24-year-old who was shot. she was telling us about some of the outrage that they're feeling within their family. this demonstration is to be starting shortly. we'll have details coming up on

this video. that power came to an immediate stop. some nonfactory employees did keep working at the office in palo alto. and happening now, a wildfire erupted in the los angeles national forest, burning about 130 acres and a cabin near glendora. crews have evacuated the area, including a camp ground. temperatures topping out around 110 degrees. hampering efforts to contain the fire. >> i'm afraid this next few days is going to be not so great for firefighters. >> yes. temperatures arriving and we're going to see that happening near the immediate bay area now up to our north. sunny skies here in the bay area, it's warm and going to get hot over the weekend. extremely hot inland. here is an area of the

northwestern u.s. that is covered by red flag warnings and high fire danger until 8:00 this evening for this region of northeastern california and spilling into parts of western nevada and up into the oregon border as a matter of fact. let's take a look at conditions, excuse me, near the rocky fires now. it's so hot, extremely dry. temperatures 85 degrees and humidity down to 24%. and winds are gusty to about 13 miles per hour. making it very difficult for firefighters to contain the fire. overmight, wind gusts are expected to intensivy dropping off to wind speeds by mid day tomorrow, overnight, it's going to be tough. from the golden gate from our east bay hills camera, looking at absence of marine layer. one indication it's warming up.
