a massive water main break flooded a vallejo neighborhood and cut water service to half the city. you can see the water gushing in this video. i'm katie marzullo. vallejo city workers isolated the break but repairs are expected to last through the night. people with reduced water pressure can pick up water from two fire stationness the city. we're live at station 92 with how the process works. >> reporter: we learned within the last hour a four to six block area is going to be

completely without water as crews test the safety of the repairs that they are working on. meanwhile, volunteers and city staff have passed out water bottles to the elderly and people with disability. you can see behind me a large, stacks and stacks of water for folks that are affected by the water. they're asking you bring your i.d. and also your own bag to pick it up. we're at the fire station along 900 redwood street. so stop by here if you need water. as you're about to see, it's going to be a while until service is restored. >> it was river coming down the railroad tracks. >> he watched a river of val's drinking water gush out of the 20-inch main. >> we have crews that have been actively working on this for several hours. it began last night. >> reporter: the city set up an emergency operations center, giving an update around noon.

the response, too slow, say people who live in a mobile home park that flooded. >> the city didn't have anything ready or aware of what to do and how to happen it, and so we -- handle and it so we lost it. thousands and thousands of gallons of water. >> just now or -- >> water blocked judy's but from her home as seen on her real phone video. >> at the time i was, like, scared. >> reporter: more than 30,000 people, about half the city, have reduced water pressure, which also applies to the hydrants. >> we don't have enough water to fight fires or deal with anything on the west side of town. >> reporter: the fire department called in water tender trucks from neighboring agencies to help. >> we're trying to prepare for the worst case. >> city leaders could not say how old the pipe is or how much water is being lost. >> we're trying to pump the water out of the cavern so we

can get in there and turn the water a off. >> reporter: service is expected to be restored tomorrow morning. if you have water, it's safe to drink in vallejo, abc7 news. >> no matter where you are in the bay area, you probably have seen something like this today. our walnut creek camera captured this look at dirty air. people are smelling smoke. the smoke has drifted from two large wildfires burning in lake county. >> i've heard it's coming from the fires to the north, and they said there's a wind blowing it back down here, into the bay and this area. so they're here. >> the smoke filled the sky above petaluma. stay indoors if you have respiratory problems. let's look outside at the conditions. this is from the east bay hills camera looking towards san francisco, you can hardly see the city. let's get the latest from drew tuma.

pretty bad out there. how long is that going to last? >> a hazy start to the weekend. this is downtown san francisco, and on a clear day you'd be able to see much of the east bay, but a veil of haze is over the bay area. the reason why, it's actually hundreds of miles to the north. several brush fires to the west of redding at this hour, and under a north wind today, a lot of the smoke moved south along the coast and into the bay area, and this is going to be the same setup as well for sunday. so, as we take a look at sunday, "spare the air" is now in effect. air quality in the inland east bay will be poor, the santa clara valley poor, so use public transits, car pool orbike to cut down on emissions, and it is incredibly warm. we hit a high of 86 in san francisco, down to 76 right now. 85, oakland. 92, san jose, 102, antioch, even

hotter for sunday. we'll look at those numbers with the full accuweather seven-day forecast in a few minutes. >> not just northern california the soaring temperatures this weekend are making condition meanser dangerous for firefighters along the west coast. we're in los angeles with more. >> reporter: the perfect storm of bad news as wildfires scorch the western u.s. from north to south, record drought, heat with a, and now strong winds. in california, firefighters at 16 wildfires were also battling dehydration and heat exhaustion as temperatures soar into the triple digits. >> very steep terrain and conditions for the next 72 hours will be a challenge due to high temperatures. a big challenge. >> at least five firefighters had to evacuate yet. in simi valley, hundreds of homes sit just feet from the flames. >> i get a call from my daughter and she was on her way home, and she is crying and saying, it is

in the try angle neighborhood. the victim is a cofounder of a tech firm that sold for $1 billion. we'll hear from the victim coming up on abc7 news at 6:00. we have new details tonight on a deadly accident involving a bicyclist in. the victim is stephen me of fremont. officers say he was on the right-hand side shoulder when he suddenly veered into the bath of a car. he was wearing safety gear but was thrown from his bike and down a dirt embankment. the driver of the car was not arrested. >> in sonoma county two people died in a head-on collision and two others suffered serious injury. a ford pickup truck going southbound on 101 swerved, flipped, and hit a jeep. a man and a woman inside the truck died at the scene. two people in the jeep were airlifted to the hospital. it happened last night near the

guyserville exit. a driver of a third vehicle was unable to avoid the pileup and bloomed the wreckage but no one was hurt in the third car. details on the massive explosion in china. state media says the death toll from the wednesday blast has risen to 104. the new toll comes as rescuers scour the area devastated by fire and explosions at a warehouse for hazardous chemicals. rescuers found another survivor today but several additional small explosions rocked the disaster zone today. ahead, deal involving oakland's airport gives passengers a new option to get around. also, the technical problem that halted flights at several major airports. >> if i die after doing this, at least i've done something with my life. >> a life-saving choice that sparked a kindness revolution. how one woman put into motion an effort that has saved 50 lives.

u.s. and japanese cities marked the 70th anniversary of the end over world war ii with a ceremony at pearl harbor the japanese attack in 1941 was the beginning of the war for the united states. the mayor of honolulu said the ceremony honored and remembered the past. part of pearl harbor is open for the public for a display of fireworks to celebrate decades of peace. >> the faa knows what caused flight delays at east coast airports today. the agency says it was a

computer problem at an air traffic center in virginia that controllers use to direct high-altitude flights. that forced them to stop planes from leaving the -- area's three major airports and passengers were not happy. >> supposed to fly out this morning and the pilot was not available. then we got on the plane and we're told the radar is not available. so here i am. >> the faa is continuing to investigate what exactly went wrong. sfo reports a few related cancellations and delays this morning but says operations are back to normal now. oakland's airport has reached a deal with uber. uber can now legally pick up and drop off airport passengers. airport officials say it's pat of an eight-month pilot program. the airport has the same agreement with the service >> how thousands of students in the east bay area are getting a

a new exchange program for organ donors and an a.m. hop holds the report for the longest living kid any transplant chain. a woman donated a kit any and her daughter give her kidney to another perfect so on. there are currently 50 people in the chain. they hope to continue the chain and get to 1,000 people. >> i see myself as a small part of the story. i'm benefiting from the story.
