we start with the breaking news from the battle against the wildfire in washington state. three firefighters there killed in the line of duty. >> officials say the firefighters were involved in what's described as initial attack operations against the fire. during that time their vehicle crashed, and it's believed they were overtaken by the flames. with more details, here's abc's kenneth moton. >> reporter: washington is in a state of emergency requesting immediate federal help hours after three firefighters were killed and another four injured while battling a raging wildfire in the eastern community of twist. the sheriff describing it as a hell storm. >> the bottom line this was hell in here. it's just obvious. it was blowing in every direction and we lost three. >> reporter: more than 230,000 acres burned. several homes have been evacuated in okanogan county and emergency management posting "it has been a rough day. we have lost three firefighters, homes and security." the national guard is on the ground trying to protect thousands of homes.

>> the past ten hours we're up here, it's hot, you know, i got new boots yesterday. we're breaking them in, getting blisters on my heels. >> reporter: nearly 100 wildfires have been wreaking havoc across the west. in california they forced evacuations at national parks. in eastern oregon, governor kate brown toured the destruction where three dozen homes were destroyed including one belonging to carolyn hodge. >> obviously we're going to have to find a place to live for probably a couple of years because just getting anything done up here and then we're going to start working on this, cleaning up and take it one day at a time at this point. >> reporter: kenneth moton, abc news, washington. well, firefighters in the northwest can expect worsening conditions today. >> while a powerful storm system is moving from the great lakes to the east coast, delaying travelers this morning. accuweather's justin povick has the latest. good morning, justin. >> phillip and reena, thanks, and good morning. showers and thunderstorms are making their march slowly to the

east, and we are concerned that these are going to produce very heavy rain, in fact, flash flooding is going to be possible from pittsburgh to philadelphia and south to our nation's capital around richmond looking at some very heavy rain, as well. one more dry day from hartford to boston.founfounlete in those areas. in the northwest we need the rain here desperately, unfortunately, not in the cards today or tomorrow. instead the winds are going to increase. bad news for the ongoing fire situation. in terms of the tropics we still have danny churning westbound though it's not going to be strengthening rapidly any time soon. phillip and reena, let's toss it back over to you. now breaking overnight at least three have been killed in a shooting in rochester, new york, near a boys and girls club. another four people were wounded by this drive-by. police say that gunfire rang out when a basketball game was under way. across the street from the rochester headquarters for the boys and girls club. four other people were wounded in that shooting. another fatal police shooting has triggered a new round of protests in st. louis.

police shot and killed a young black suspect yesterday while serving a search warrant at a home in a high crime neighborhood. but this time they say the 18-year-old had a weapon and apparently was ready to use it. >> two young african-american men ran out of the back door. both were armed. one was armed with a -- what appears to be a 9 millimeter with an extended magazine. the other individual had two guns and a quantity of crack cocaine. as they ran, one of the individuals turned and pointed the gun at the officers. >> protesters angry over the shooting turned violent overnight apparently setting this house on irfoo. others threw bottles and rocks at officers. nine people were arrested, and police used tear gas to break up the crowd. this taking place just over a year after michael brown was killed in nearby ferguson. well, government leaders in thailand now say that this week's deadly bombing in bangkok was not likely carried out by international terrorists. instead, investigators are

looking for a man seen leaving a backpack behind just minutes before monday's attack at a downtown shrine. two other people seen near that man are also considered to be suspects in the blast that killed 20 people. well, a man accused of threatening to blow up the statue of liberty in april has been arrested in lubbock, texas. the bomb threat turned out to be a hoax, but more than 3,000 tourists had to be evacuated from liberty island. jason smith allegedly made the call from his ipad using the name of one of the co-conspirators from the 1993 world trade center bombings. smith is also accused of threatening to attack times square and kill police. to politics now and a war of words erupting between two republican rivals in new hampshire. donald trump speaking at a town hall meeting he scheduled to compete with one hosted by jeb bush just miles away. bush calling into question trump's republican credentials. trump saying bush is low energy and unelectable. >> mr. trump doesn't have a proven conservative record.

he was a democrat longer in the last decade than he was a republican. >> will, i think jeb bush is totally out of touch on women's health issues, i mean totally. >> trump is still touting his controversial plan to deport millions of undocumented immigrants. when asked how, trump said he'll enlist local police to help with the job. well, former subway pitchman jared fogle is facing more than 12 years in prison as he prepares to plead guilty to underage sex with minors and child pornography. investigators say fogle traveled to new york for sex with girls as young as 13 and also received and distributed child porn. the 37-year-old father of two has agreed to pay as much as 14 victims $100,000 each in restitution. his wife now filing for divorce. it looks like oscar pistorius won't be free from prison tomorrow after all. the justice department in south africa put the release on hold and sent the case back to the parole board for a hearing. pistorius was due to be set free

after serving just ten months of a five-year manslaughter sentence for killing his girlfriend reeva steenkamp. her friends and family say ten months is not enough. we expect to learn more about jimmy carter's health crisis when the former president speaks today in atlanta. it was just days ago that mr. carter revealed he had cancer and that the disease had spread through his body. the former president did not reveal what kind of cancer, but his brother, father and two sisters all died of pancreatic cancer. well, we're learning more about two women who are the first to complete the grueling training to be army rangers. captain kristen griest from connecticut is a military police officer who served in afghanistan, and first lieutenant shaye haver from texas is an attack helicopter pilot. both are west point graduates. they'll be among the 96 soldiers graduating tomorrow and what a remarkable milestone. i can't believe it. it's pretty remarkable. >> yeah, congratulations to them. well, still ahead, the american airline accused of

rate hike was one of the reasons for a sell-off on wall street. evidence from the most recent federal reserve meeting indicates that a rate increase could come as early as next month, but a hike could be put off because fed officials also seemed concern about some economic factors. all that and the dropping price of oil hit all the major averages. the dow losing 162 points. nasdaq dropping 40 and the s&p 500 off by 17. delta is accused of pressuring passengers to spend more on upgrades. carriers often use up-selling tactics. they get passengers' attention with low fares then try to sell them upgrades. but a passenger rights group says that delta is now trying to shame travelers who buy economy tickets on their website by highlighting the drawbacks such as no seat assignments, no refunds and being last to board. well, apple stores across the country getting a bit of a makeover. as ipod sales dip, they'll be moved to the side with headphones and accessories. once a hot seller, they're no

longer in the middle of the stores with the iphones, macbooks and computers. also starting next wednesday, gone are those ipad smart signs making room for more sample products. well, for a second year in a row, a brewery in colorado is using count chocula cereal, okay, in one of its beers. the dark colored brew is being made at the black bottle brewery. full boxes of general mills cereal, yeah, the full boxes of the cereal go straight into the vats. last year the brewery bought all the count chocula cereal from a couple of supermarkets in the area. this year they got a big delivery from general mills. i loved this cereal as a kid, full of sugar. lots of chocolate. turns the milk brown and i can't imagine putting it in beer. >> chocolate beer. >> you're so adventurous. >> got to try it out. when we come back, students getting random drug tests at high schools. the loophole discovered allowing school officials to do it. plus, cool and calm under pressure. a 6-year-old being called a hero.

conditions, more flooding is possible there in jersey and into the ohio valley, and there will be wet roads across the southeast all the way to texas, as well as around the great lakes. and if you're flying, airport delays possible in atlanta, charlotte, washington, d.c. and philadelphia. well, we're learning new details about the man rosie o'donnell's teen daughter spent time with after running away from home. >> police in new jersey found chelsea o'donnell with steve sheerer, a man they say is a known criminal. sheerer has a number of drug convictions on his record, as well as an arrest for endangering a child, but so far he is not facing any charges in connection with chelsea o'donnell. well, golfers playing a round at a north carolina golf course got the surprise of their life when a panel door from a passenger jet fell and landed on the 7th hole. the 15x15-inch section came from a nonpressurized area of an american airlines flight that was about to land at charlotte airport. those golfers were stunned when they saw it heading in their direction. >> just trolling around in the

air falling to the ground. >> i mean, it could have killed one of us. >> but the good news is no one on the plane or on the ground was injured. federal investigators now looking into how and why that panel came off the jet. in florida, the danger is underground. a sinkhole has opened up in the same spot where a man lost his life in 2013 when the ground gave way. worried neighbors say it's a painful reminder of the tragedy two years ago when a sinkhole swallowed jeffrey bush as he slept. his body was never recovered. florida is prone to sinkholes because of the porous limestone below the ground. the family of a 6-year-old north carolina boy says he is a hero because he saved his grandfather's life. trevor fowler was home alone with his granddad when the older man began feeling pain. trevor knew exactly what to do. he stayed calm and called 911. >> alamance 911.

>> hello, my pa-pa, his chest hurts, and we're the only ones home. >> okay, how old is he? >> he is 84. >> all right. how old are you? >> i am 6 years old. >> impressive. it turns out that trevor's mother is a diabetic, so she had taught him exactly what to do in case of an emergency. trevor's grandfather is doing just fine, and he says he's incredibly grateful to his grandson. surveillance cameras were rolling when a man in this red pickup truck pulled up to a 1200-pound atm, attached a chain and then yanked it away, but after all of that effort, the thief did not get one red cent. he dumped the machine by the side of the road where police later recovered it, and now the search is on for the suspect. hey, remember that ice bucket challenge that was so popular last year. well, it was raising money for als research, and as you know, lou gehrig's disease was among the issues that they were trying to help. well, now scientists at johns hopkins says the 220 million raised has helped lead to a breakthrough.

researchers were able to unravel the mystery of a protein called tdp43, which is dysfunctional in about 90% of als patients. as the school year gets under way across the country, some students will face a new test that has nothing to do with academics. the school district in the wisconsin town of crivitz will begin random drug testing. normally schools are prohibited from random drug tests but the administration found a loophole. high school athletes, students who participate in extracurricular activities and students who have a parking pass can be tested as nonstudents. five students will be tested there every two weeks. coming up next in "the pulse," bad lipreading. you know the people behind the hilarious nfl versions, now they are taking on the gop debate. plus, a mom's must-see dance routine in the delivery room. ee mom's dance routine in the delivery room.

it is not smoky here now. that is an indication it calmed down overnight. tesla road is closed. it is burning near is why it is called the tesla first. look at the view of the wind-driven fire that has burned 2,500 acres. it destroys one vacant home. you can see it burning close to other hems but they were saved. >> residents evacuated and fire burned up but we have operations where the fire buns up and we bump it off of the structures and butch the fire away. crews did a good job on that. >> they evacuated the recreation area.
