abc 7 starts right now with live breaking news. >> that breaking news is happening in the east bay where at least two people have been seriously injured after an amtrak train struck a pickup truck. sky 7 hd is live over the scene. look at that vehicle. an amtrak california spokesperson tells us an oakland bound train hit the pickup before 3:00 this afternoon. the crash happened east of brentwood near the county line. the truck flew into the river as you just saw adjacent to the railroad crossing. it was partially submerged. sky 7 hd captured this video showing one of two medical helicopters taking off with the crash victims.

amtrak says there were 139 people aboard that train, none injured. the train came to a stop quickly after hitting the truck. the trip to oakland has been delayed. we will continue to monitor this and bring you updates on abc 7 news and on twitter on abc 7 news bay area. our other top stories showing us video of the land charred in livermore from the 2,500 acre tesla fire. crews did make progress overnight. containment from 5% to 25%. that wind-driven fire broke out on tesla road. laura anthony with more now from livermore. >> reporter: we could see the flames. standing on the deck of the hill top home now recalls what it was like yesterday afternoon. they watch from below as an out of control grass fire crested the ridge just above their

house. told us the firefighter approached them with an update. >> waiting for the bad news and he let me know they were able to save it and it came right up the house and had to take refuge in the house to get away from the heat and were able to save not just my house. >> reporter: so far just one unoccupied home it been lost to the fire. the concern going into the afternoon as to whether the wind will whip things up again. >> it will get dry and windy. that is when it will test our lines. >> reporter: this couple knows their home is safe though the ground around it is completely charred. are you feeling pretty grateful? >> definitely. the fire crews did an amazing job. >> laura tells us cal fire hopes to have to fire fully contained by the weekend. >> if you have pictures or video of the fire share it with us by posting it on social media.

little progress today in slowing down the so-called rough fire burning in the sierra national forest. flames are within three miles of hume lake, a popular camp ground. the fire exploded in size yesterday after jumping a highway forcing firefighters to pack up and leave their command center. more than 2,500 people were evacuated. >> it was bright orange. it was barely any sun and really bad. >> a lightning strike started that fire on july 31st. it charred more than 32,000 acres and is just three percent contained. >> let's get a check on our forecast. spencer christian is with us. >> i'm afraid i don't have encouraging weather news for the east bay fire or near livermore. right to sky doppler 7 hd. we have clouds near the coast and sunny skies over most of the inland area near the fire where

we have 2,500 acres burning and only 25% contained. winds remain a problem. it's quite dry. relative humidity 42%. temperature 80 degrees. winds out of the west southwest at 16 miles per hour but gusting to 26 miles per hour and as we look at the wind gusts forecast for the next 24 hours you can see gusts remain quite strong into the late night and overnight hours from 20 to 27 miles per hour through the overnight hours and into early tomorrow morning and then in the afternoon tomorrow looks like the winds will increase again to almost 30 miles per hour gusts. so concern for nearby residents and firefighters. closer to home here showing low clouds and fog drifting from the coast over san francisco currently 64 degrees here in san francisco. temperatures in the 70s in oakland, mountain view. 82 at morgan hill. and at the golden gate showing clouds just above the golden

gate there. temperatures are currently in the low to mid 70s at santa rosa. 80 to 81 degrees at fairfield, concord and livermore. i will be back in a few moments to give you a look at the accuweather forecast. former president jimmy carter publically addressed his cancer diagnosis. >> the president says the disease has spread to his brain and is beginning treatment immediately. marcy gonzalez joins us live now. >> reporter: carter says he first started feeling sick during a trip abroad earlier this year and had surgery to remove a cancerous mass from his liver. he says the real battle is just beginning. with humility and humor former president jimmy carter openly detailed his melanoma diagnosis, sharing fears when he learned the cancer first discovered on his liver had spread with doctors also finding it on his

caitlyn's transition. she was formerly known as bruce jenner. family and friends of an oakland man who died following a foot chase with a police officer filed a complaint. >> authorities say he died after becoming wedged between two buildings while running away from officers. the trachase followed a traffic stop. officials say he died from asphyxiation. friends and family not convinced and they think he died of something else. >> i think that police used extreme force to the point where they beat him to death, tased him, maybe a combination of both. definitely it was some kind of beating going on because i definitely saw him at the viewing. >> yesterday the department showed members of the media body

camera video showing his death. police plan to release that video once the investigation is complete. we have new information about the woman on the peninsula caught on camera apparently abusing a dog she was supposed to be taking care of. >> peninsula animal care investigators tell us they are pursuing a criminal case against that woman. vic lee joins us live with more on the story. >> reporter: larry, we are learning tonight that the peninsula humane society will likely give the case to the district attorney monday. abc 7 news learning the woman who we are not naming because the humane society has not identified her was running her dog sitting and boarding business out of her home illegally without proper city permits. now to this video. just a warning it is graphic and it is hard to look at. the woman grabs the little dog by the neck and throws it to the ground. and then she appears to be punching the animal before

taking the dog inside her home. >> the video is sickening. there is absolutely no reason why anyone should treat an animal like that. >> reporter: animal care investigators are looking for that dog which appears to be a long haired chihuahua mix like this one waiting to be adopted at the peninsula humane society. they say the woman refuses to tell them where the dog is. no one answered when we knocked on the door of her home where she has reportedly been running a dog sitting and boarding business for the past decade. >> she runs a very nice business. she has had a successful business. i don't know what caused her to do such a thing. as i say, i have never seen her doing anything like that before so i mean it's just disappointing to me. >> reporter: the humane society says it has received multiple

60,990. nasdaq closing at 4,877 and s&p 500 fell 43 points. the biggest decline since february of last year. shares of twitter fell below their ipo price for the first time ever today. twitter debuted on the new york stock exchange at $26 a share. today the low dropped to $25.94. the company lost nearly half of its value with stock struggling on news of poor performance and a lot of uncertainty surrounding the leadership. people heading to this year's burning manifestival with another thing to deal with infested with large biting insects. the bugs are everywhere and calls them cross between winged ants and stink bugs. san francisco officials hope

a little bit of paint will go a long way to improve pedestrian safety. this morning supervisor scott weiner and other city leaders helped paint a safety zone on one of the most dangerous intersections market and 16th street creating a barrier. >> the painted safety zone will help by making pedestrians more visible to drivers. drivers will be able to see pedestrians earlier. >> no turn on a red light sign has gone up at that intersection. the city has been looking for ways to improve safety in the upper market neighborhood. there were more than 160 accidents in that area. members of the largest freshman class in the history of san francisco state university are moving into the dorms. abc 7 news was on the campus this morning as they unpacked. administrators tell us students are coming here for the culture of entrepreneurship, innovation and creativity, the same things attracting a lot of other

people. that means housing is tight. the dorms accommodate 2,500 students. this year's freshman class has more than 4,200 students. >> think about offcampus housing? >> i am in a dorm. i said i will stick in the dorm. a the housing market contributes. >> classes begin monday. this is thursday and really it's the day we officially start looking ahead to the weekend. some like spencer christian look on monday. >> start sunday night. looks like it will be a nice calm, quiet weekend weatherwise for the bay area much like what we have right now. here we have bright skies although thin high clouds around and some more visible low clouds near the coast line. on we go to the windy conditions across the entire bay area.

we have winds up to 22 miles per hour at sfo and at fairfield. 18 miles per hour gusts at mountain view. over in inland east bay near the fires of livermore we have strong gusty winds. here is the view of blue sky over the bay. where i am standing we see low clouds and fog becoming more widespread. this pattern we have is a steady one. we see little change over the next seven days. satellite and radar composite shows this quiet pattern with no disturbances. nothing to really shake up the current pattern. temperatures are a little bit below average for this time of year inland because of this cooling sea breeze. let's move along and take a look at overnight lows with low clouds spreading beyond the coast locally inland. we see low temperatures dropping into the upper 50s to around 60 or low 60s for most locations. tomorrow once low clouds pull

back to the coast line as they tend to do by about mid day we see mainly sunny skies with high temperatures ranging from upper 70s to low 80s about 79 at san jose. 78 santa clara. on the peninsula we'll see highs ranging from mid to upper 70s. and low clouds linger at the coast tomorrow. highs of about 63 at pacifica. 65 at half moon bay. downtown san francisco will top out at about 66 degrees tomorrow. 64 in the sunset district. in the north bay coastal areas will see low to mid 60s. about 80 inland. 78 at napa. east bay high of 71. 76 union city and the inland east bay will be mild to warm with highs low to mid 80s about 84 at fairfield. 85 at livermore. 81 at plenston.

not much change at all in the temperature range through the next seven days. partly to mostly sunny. low clouds beginning to spread during overnight hours which is typical this time of year. daytime highs in the upper 80s. back now to the race for the white house. abc news reporter is in washington. jeb bush is now firing back at donald trump. >> reporter: deal with it. donald trump's defiant stance on the cover of "time" magazine. jeb bush is refocused on taking down the dominant front runner. >> all of this stuff is to appeal to people's anger and angst rather than have solutions to solve problems. >> reporter: bush firing back at the billionaire's insults hurled during trump's first-ever town hall in new hampshire. the candidates holding events at the same time miles apart. >> you know what is happening to jeb 's crowd down the street? they are sleeping. they are sleeping now.

>> reporter: trump pledged to build a wall along the mexico border and to enlist local police to help with an immediate mass deportation of illegal ali aliens. it is going to be tough. >> reporter: a new poll shows trump ahead of former governor bush in bush's own state of florida, the same state where trump surpasses hillary clinton in the poll. those still behind her in ohio and pennsylvania. today clinton is out with his new ad slamming trump and bush for using the term anchor babies but both republicans are defending its use. >> i will use the word anchor baby. >> i don't regret it. >> do you have a better term? >> reporter: with that question came a reply in a tweet from hillary clinton saying jeb bush should simply call them babies, children or american citizens.

two female soldiers are set to graduate tomorrow from the army ranger training camp, the first women to make it through this grueling course. the male graduates admitted they were skeptical about how well the women would perform but they stepped up and proved all the guys wrong. >> i do hope that with our performance in ranger school we have been able to inform that decision as to what they can expect from women in the military, that we can handle things physically and mentally on the same level as men and we

burned and the fire is 25% contained. across our state cal fire information officers tweeted there are now more than 11,000 firefighters battling 15 major wildfires. to our north in washington state fires burned more than 88,000 acres. 40 miles per hour winds are making firefighters' jobs extra tough. abc 7 news reporter lauren lyster tells us the governor is calling the wildfire conditions unprecedented. >> reporter: crews face fast moving wind as they continue to battle a wildfire raging in central washington. the blaze turned deadly near the town of twist. >> it was a hell storm and the winds were blowing in every direction. >> reporter: three firefighters were killed and four more were injured, one critically when winds apparently shifted unexpectedly and flames overtook the crews' vehicle. >> we know that these fires have burned a big hole in our state's heart. these are three big heroes

protecting small towns. >> reporter: family of the critically injured firefighter arrived at the medical center in seattle overnight. the 25-year-old man whose name hasn't been released is in intensive care suffering burns to about 60% of his body. in california fires forced evacuations of national parks. east of oakland billowing smoke can be seen for miles and air tankers are used to help try to contain the blaze. in oregon governor brown toured damage of wildfire that destroyed three dozen homes. >> obviously we are going to have to find a place to live for probably a couple of years. >> reporter: the heat and drought in western states are making this fire season one of the most explosive in recent years. right now close to 29,000 firefighters are fighting about 100 large fires. laura lister, abc news, los angeles. repairs are underway on a large water main.

the 82-year-old pipe burst around 4:00 a.m. and flooded the intersection of oakland. work is going to continue there through the evening. oakland had five water main breaks after the 4.0 quake. it could just be problems with an aging system. pilots are reporting a sharp increase in close calls with drones this month. 70 in all since august 1st. two occurred near san jose international airport. david louie is there live with the disturbing details and reaction from pilots. >> it's not just the number of close calls that has people concerned but also the altitude in which the drone encounters are happening above a so-called no fly zone of over 400 feet. two sundays in a row pilots reported close calls with drones

in the vicinity. on august 9th the pilot saw one at 2,600 feet about eight miles southeast of the airport. on august 16th the pilot of a c-172 reported a drone passing 500 feet beneath the plane at 3,800 feet about seven miles southwest. pilots say a mid air collision with a drone could be catastrophic. >> if you hit it in the elevator you would lose the pitch of the airplane. if you hit it on the edge of the wing break a piece of the wing off you could control the airplane. >> reporter: the altitude is a big concern. 2,600 feet in one case and 3,800 the other. the drones have software codes to prevent flying above 400 feet. >> they could be custom building it and you could override the software cht. >> reporter: aviation pilots are used to scanning for other small

aircraft but a drone is but a speck. >> if you are on the ground there could be a building or tree or obstruction and you don't see an aircraft coming in. >> reporter: would not respond to questions referring us to the faa. the faa did not respond. president of the flying club says single engine planes are the most vulnerable. >> for smaller aircraft you could have a much more significant damage. some of the airplanes have only one engine. if that goes out they are a falling rock. >> reporter: in san jose, david louie, abc 7 news. former prison fugitive david sweat made his first court appearance today since being captured. his attorney entered not guilty pleas. the convicted murderer and fellow inmate richard mack broke out in early june. mack was killed while sweat was captured two days later.

as we mentioned earlier former president jimmy carter discussed his recent cancer diagnosis publically for the first time today. mr. carter began radiation treatment in atlanta. abc news chief medical editor says doctors will use targeted radiation to attack four tumors found on mr. carter's brain and will receive treatment to enhance his immune system. >> one of the benefits is that the side effects are milder than what you would see with chemotherapy. and so for someone who is 90 hopefully he will be able to tolerate this kind of treatment much better than if it was traditional chemotherapy. >> dr. besser adds that he expects the former president to do well because he is in good health for a man of his age. doctors say mr. carter's prognosis is good. coming up next former reality tv show joshua duggar

the first hurricane of the atlanta season formed with maximum sustained winds of 70 miles per hour. danny is now a category 1 hurricane and more than 1,000 miles east of the eastern caribbean islands according to the u.s. national hurricane center. >> and, of course, spencer christian has been tracking all of this. >> our forecast for the weekend. >> finally the atlantic, the tropical region is becoming active. we have had lots of storms in the pacific and now the atlantic is becoming active. we have calm conditions in the bay area but let's travel to hurricane danny, minimal hurricane. this is a category 1, the first atlantic tropical system named

hack into the ashley madison website is offering a glimpse into cheater demographics. analysis from the website found the median age of users was 46 and more than three-quarters were men. big shock there. there were at least 13,000 addresses from military and government e-mails and a small number of addresses from fortune 500 companies. josh duggar says he is the, quote, biggest hypocrit ever. he confessed to having a secret addiction to porn and admitted to cheating on his wife after reports that his name was one of the millions exposed in the ashley madison hack. in may police report revealed duggar molested five under aged girls including four of his own

it says cover california is still sluggish at resolving customer service problems leaving many unable to finalize taxes. only a small percentage of enrollees complained but acknowledge they have some work to do. two u.s. senators are calling for takata to voluntary recall air bags from all vehicles. the investigation nat the air bags was expanded after the explosion of a takata air bag in a volkswagen not part of the previous recall. how ticked off are customers of sephora? they organized a mass return of products they bought from the san francisco based company. it all started when sephora held a promotion offering high value

>> carolyn tyler joins us live from one of the city's major bicycle routes with the story. >> reporter: it's captain john stamford and he was breaking bread today saying he is learning from the cyclists and at the same time trying to educate them about safety issues. it seems just the other day captain john was a villain in the san francisco bike community. now among those joining him on this ride one of his biggest critics. >> i learned a lot. >> reporter: he heard a lot after a sting citing cyclists he said were blowing through stop signs and red lights. last night dozens staged a protest, every bike stopping at every sign disrupting the flow of traffic. the police crack down is over for now. >> if we continue to get the complaints, if we continue to observe it then we will have to
