bay. about 80 in san jose. we'll let you know how long this pleasant summertime weather will last. >> thank you. this morning, anti-terror police in france are investigating an attack by an armed gunmen aboard a paris-bound train. it could have been a massacre if not for the life-saving efforts of three americans all with ties to northern california. one was born in pittsburgh. the other lives in sacramento. the third is from oregon. melanie woodrow has the latest. >> reporter: in this dramatic, exclusive video, you can see those injured while taking him down. the potential terror attack happened on a train traveling from amsterdam to paris. two u.s. servicemen both with sacramento ties heard the gunmen loading a weapon inside a rest room on the train. the gunman reportedly came out shirtless with a rifle flunk over his shoulder. that's when the men sprang into

action, wrestling the moroccan gunman to the ground. >> if they hadn't stepped up, there could have been a lot of deaths. >> we are both very proud of them. >> reporter: anthony sadler was the third man who helped thwart the attack. alec yelled, get him. three people were injured. the gunman slashed him with a box cutter. >> he had cuts on his back. they almost cut his eye out. >> his fingers. >> he took the gunman's weapon. they each credit the other for saving his life. >> i would have been killed if it wasn't for alex. >> i talked to alex and alex said the same thing. mom, if it wasn't for spencer, i would be dead. >> the gunman's motives are not yet known. a potentially deadly train ride that ended differently because of the heroic efforts of three

men. stone was hospitalized and is reportedly doing okay. france's anti-terror unit is investigating. >> 8:03 is our time. this morning, many people are concerned about their 401(k)s after a brutal finish to the week on wall street, the worst in four years. yesterday stocks plummeted again on fears that china's economy is slowing, and because of a dip in oil prices. the dow plunged 530 points. the index lost more than 1,000 points this week alone. the nasdaq lost more than 170 points. s&p s&p dropped 64. investors are worried, particularly those at or near retirement age. >> recently the last year or so, we had quite a few increases in the stock. i hope it didn't take it all away. >> economists warn the worst thing a person can do is bail out. >> you have to look through the ups and downs in the market. strategically, you should be diversifying your assets. this is blocking and tackling.

>> the recent reduction in the value of china's currency weighed heavily on how the market reacted this week. >> a planned parenthood clinic in san jose is accused of harvesting organs from a late-term fetus that was aborted and using it for research. the allegations came from a group that records videos at the clinic in san jose. they've been posting interviews from interviews planned parenthood claims were taped illegally. an appeal is in the works. >> abortion opponents are planning a nationwide protest against planned parenthood in 47 states and more than 300 cities. locally, a demonstration is planned at 10:00 at the planned parenthood in concord. a san francisco couple is now afraid of leaving their richmond district neighborhood because of a pack of rack

raccoons. they were attacked and saved by a neighbor who came to their rescue. >> patty says she and her husband went out monday night to let their dog get one last walk. that's when a raccoon pounced. >> i started swinging the dog trying to get it off. >> reporter: then a pack of raccoons attacked. >> i got another one on my other leg. at this point i'm in the middle of the street and look up to see where is my husband? i look and he's throwing raccoons are just jumping on him. >> reporter: the struggle lasted a few seconds till their neighbor came to the rescue with his golf club. he used his club to bang on the garbage cans left out for trash collection. she and her husband are going through a series of anti-rabies treatments. melanie is an urban wildlife

rescue. she says people shouldn't be worried about raccoons attacking. this was very unusual. >> typically, the only time they are going to come in contact with a problem animal again is if somebody has been hand feeding them and they are used to people or if it's a mom defending young and feels threatened. >> reporter: her neighbors can do more to help control the wild animals with they lock their garbage cans and stop feeding the raccoons. authorities are warning pet owners to be careful if you visit lake mendocino. a feral pig was found with pseudo-rabies. it is transmitted through fluid or fecies. health officials triggered warnings after discovering blue/green algae.

it poses the greatest threat to pets and children. high temperatures and the drought are ideal conditions for the algae, according to officials. >> 8:07 is our time. police on the lookout for an older man who molested a child at a popular mall. a surveillance photo from the shopping center shows the man they are looking for on your screen right there police say he inappropriately touched a juvenile inside the rest room. he is described being 70 to 80. he was last seen driving away in a silver honda. san francisco police have released s ed surveillance vide help find a man who assaulted people on a muny bus. three people punched or smacked the man as they left. one came back on and threw a beer bottle at the victim. police identified one suspect, 18-year-old donald scobi, but he has not yet been arrested. the home season for the niners begin tomorrow.

there are valid concerns about the turf issues at >> taylor swift's concert shook the grass out of the dirt at levy stadium at santa clara. the dallas cowboys are questioning whether new turf will stay down. >> honestly, i don't know the first thing about grass. >> head coach addressed the concerns. >> every day i walk on fields that are perfect. i have no reason to question him or anything about the grass. i'm very confident. >> reporter: fans and sports bloggers are more skeptical. >> it's a $1.3 billion stadium that does not go as far as it used to. >> reporter: money can buy you a nice home but the lawn is extra. for some reason, it doesn't stick at levi's. >> they had their first practice, had to go half speed because the turf was coming out

of the ground. >> reporter: stadium management says the install went well and they expect a great playing surface sunday. nearby restaurants expect business to triple. >> we are om a mile from the park which is just really phenomenal. people love that walk to the stadium. >> reporter: as one fan puts it -- >> it can be an unpredictable season. >> reporter: there is a new coach and drastically different roster this season. the oakland unified school district hopes to be fully staffed when classes start monday. yesterday a spokesperson told us there are 15 teacher vacancies left which they plan on filling over the weekend. the distract had 50 openings before a job fair wednesday. district officials don't anticipate expanding class sizes because they hired enough teachers. 8:09 is our time. a final weekend of summer. for all those kids out there heading back to opening unified.

increase in mankind's history. >> reporter: that didn't stop trump from putting on quite the show. >> you know, if it rains, i'll take off my hat and i'll prove once and for all that it's mine. okay? >> reporter: an interesting moment here on the campaign trail. the crowd loved that moment, by the way. we do have news from the other side. this morning, abc news confirmed that hillary clinton will leave her hampton's vacation and get back out on the campaign trail to introduce new policies and likely take very tough questions about her private e-mail use of government affairs while she was secretary of state. tom llamas, abc news, mobile, alabama. at the iowa state fair, republican presidential candidate ted cruz was confronted about gay rights from an oscar-nominated actress. >> gay people used to be thrown in jail when it was illegal in this country. >> we're saying bible-believing

christians. >> reporter: ellen paige was asking the questions and believes the republican candidate discriminates against gays. the exchange went on five minutes. cruz said to be rising in the polls said he did not recognize the actress. the american legion post is offering an award after someone ripped off two flags. a small tattered piece of the american flag left on the flagpole outside the post on pearl street. the vandals cut a pow/mia flag off the pole. it happened late thursday night or early yesterday morning. the flags had only been up three weeks. >> today distracted drivers in napa beware. police passing out christmas brochures will be using extra officers to catch people driving while using cell phones and other electronic devices. distracted driving can be a killer. in 2012, more than 3,000 people

died because of distracted driving. napa police say even using a hands-free device can make driving more dangerous. 8:17 is our time. a flood of insects that invaded the desert where burning ban has set up is spread into california. they are drawn by the lights of la playa in the nevada desert as well as eastern california. the state ag department took samples thursday. though emit odors like stink bugs and pose no health risk. >> i think with the weather pattern with the rain, that changed the food source on the desert. they produce the insects and now we have them this time here. >> officials expect their numbers to drop before burning ban starts august 30th. firefighters continue mop-up work on the tesla fire burning near livermore. cal fire says the wildfire is

85% contained. the fire has burned 2700 acres. the flames spread near and around homes. only one inunhabited home was destroyed. cal fire has to fight the flames with fewer firefighters because of all the wildfires burning across the state. >> civil disowe beadians will be the order of the day in san francisco. it offers a spectacular view of downtown. the protest begins 10:00 this morning on the north beach side of telegraph hill. the committee to build the panoramic park will kick off a petition drive to gather signatures to stop the development. family and friends of space venture will gather to raise money for breast cancer patients. she died in 2003 after a long

battle with breast cancer. abc 7 news reporter carolyn tyler was one of her closest friends and part of the nonprofit friends of faith helping others facing a similar challenge. >> she came together with a group of us in the media and said that she wanted us to do something to help women who had fewer resources than she had to deal with the disease. >> the friends of faith's fund-raiser begins 9:00 a.m. near the lake view library branch. for more information we have a link on abc7news.com. as we bring in lisa, how is the weather shaping up? >> carolyn is not a fan of the sun. she will be happy it will be cloudy. temperatures in the mid 60s. the sun is not going to come out over in oakland until after 11:00. they have that going for them. numbers will slowly climb to the 60s for an afternoon high of 73 at about 3:00. all should go according to plan

and the low clouds and fog that had really moved all the way across the bay this morning and as a result, it will keep the onshore flow with us. i do expect just a little bit of clearing north of the golden gate temporarily 63 in oakland. 62 in mountain view. good morning, morgan hill. 59 for you. 61 at half moon bay. we'll look for numbers still in the 60s. a look at the golden gate where that fog pulls back temporarily from the north bay. could you see about 70 in point reyes today. concord and livermore looking at cloud cover and in the 60s. 59 napa. santa rosa, it has been chilly in the upper 50s. a live look from lake tahoe where the overnight low was 40. going for a high of 85. sunny and smoky there. we had a pretty sunrise. will be a nice sun set. hazy afternoon conditions for the northern and southern sierra. mild to warm this weekend. back to average.

running a couple degrees below average. we'll get back to normal when we see more heat come monday that will take us into the 90s. here is a look at the fog. everyone looking at the cloudy skies. it's beginning to break up a little bit around the peninsula. we still have airport delays. from north to south looking at the cloudy conditions, little circulation here offshore could pull some of the clouds back temporarily from the coast. otherwise, that onshore push keeping it summerlike in the bay area. to the north and west and makes up for a quiet weather pattern. winds will get breezy around the bay midday. in terms of temperatures, it should be very nice with about 80 in san jose. average high is about 83. you'll have that morgan hill 79. santa clara. upper 70s from sunnyvale. peninsula numbers 77 redwood city. in san francisco, you'll look for sunshine eastern side of the city and maybe pulling back near

start to the day. here is lisa tracking the conditions where you live. >> reporter: that's right. in fact, plenty of gray. all what it to our east bay valleys. we can see just a little bit of a glimpse of sun there it's been 61 all morning long. 61 also in san jose. half moon bay in the low 60s. emeryville, plenty of clouds. will be brightening up after 11:00 or so. we'll see numbers topping out around the low 70s. at the coast cloudy. look for upper 60s san francisco. partial afternoon clearing with 70s and upper 70s around the bay. mid and upper 80s inland. temperatures trending a few degrees cooler than average. we'll talk about the normal readings and second half of your weekend. >> time is 8:30. the one-year anniversary of the 6.0 napa earthquake is this coming monday. a lot of repairs have been done but there is more to do. wayne friedman has the story.

to oakland, which will now have several weeks to analyze it. over the next couple of weeks, we'll be reviewing all his material in an effort to be ready when the board of supervisors and city council comes back from recess. we'll be informing them of our findings. >> reporter: he admits it's still an uphill battle to keep the raiders and a's in oakland as part of a $1 billion development package that would see a new stadium for each, retail, hotels and housing at the current coliseum site. >> we are trying to find hundreds of millions of dollars to make this deal work. >> reporter: no details how to close an estimated $400 million funding gap that does not include paying off existing coliseum debt or buying alameda county out of the deal. still, oakland's sports president is confident. oakland can keep the raiders and a's. >> money is not the issue. it's the political will. it's can we get all the players toget$r to make it happen. >> i don't want to see them
