good morning, earn. i'm carolyn tyler i thanks for joining us on this sunday, august 23rd. let's start with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi, carolyn. good morning, everyone. and we do have the low clouds and fog once again all wait to our inland valleys. temperatures mainly in the 60s. so it's a pretty mild start. if you liked yesterday's weather, you will probably like today. 59 morgan hill. 62 san jose with low 06 san francisco and half moon bay. overcast once again about 11:00, 12:00, we begin to pull back to the shoreline and that will reveal partly cloudy skies there with 60s to about 70 san francisco. over across the bay low 70s to 80s and mid-80s in the inland east bay. a little bit of a warmup on the

way the next several days. i'll detail that coming up. care lip. >> lisa, thank you. this morning sharp questions are being asked about how a man flagged with terrorism charges in france was able to border a train. three american men stopped the attack and he this are international heroes. french authorities say if not for the action of these three men, who grew up in sacramento, many people would have died. with he have the latest. >> injured, but not defeated. airman spencer stone waved to photographers as he left the hospital. spencer is one of three men being called international heroes for thwarting a terror attack on a paris-bound train. sacramento state senior anthony sadler is another, although he still questions the title. >> i would say my friend spencer is a here rowand. i really just followed his lead. once he got up, we just followed him.

>> the third army national guards man, alek skarlatos, who said tackling the gunman was instinctual. >> i didn't even have time to think. >> he shot this video of the gunman hogtied, but not before the 26-year-old moroccan man armed with a knife managed to cut spencer. mother is relieved he's alive. >> i really feel like they had a define intervention and they were saved because the gun was at his head. >> the three men were vacationing as the train was passing belgium. alex spotted the gunman and said to expenser and anthony, let's go. >> i showed up and grabbed the gun from him. and we basically started boating him in the head. >> alex's dad. >> they knew they had to do something. they saved lives.

>> still, the dominant feel is that it's great relieve that we didn't lose our son. >> authorities arrested the gunman. hit plot foiled, thanks to the efforts of three fast-moving men. melanie woodrow, abc7 news. >> president obama called the three men yesterday to commend and congratulate them for their courage. according to a spokesperson the president expressed his great tied for their heroic actions. the suspect has been identified. he's a 26-year-old moroccan. france's interior minister said the man was earlier placed on a security watch list. he is described by officials in spain where he previously lived as an islamic extremeist. the belgian government has stepped up rail security following the attack. police have also been warned to be on alert at major events and public gatherings. and another new wildfire is

burning in lake county. it's spreading dangerously fast just south of clear lake. the peterson fire started around 5:30 yesterday afternoon off peterson lane in kelseyville. it's already burned at least 400 acres and structures are threatened. this is the third major fire in lake county this summer. the 2500 jerusalem fire near middletown is the 8% contained. the rocky fire near lower lake was contained last friday. authorities are scrambling for resources to help on the front lines as wildfires continue across the west. they are asking for all the help they can get. abc news reporter can disgibson is in washington with more. >> crews battling the rages wildfires and finally getting reinforcements. >> this is our practice fire shelter. >> up to 3,000 citizen volunteers answering the unprecedented call for help. training today on the front lines tomorrow.

>> if they call for volunteers and we can help in any way, we will be here. >> the fire in central washington scorching more than 227,000 acres, responsible for the deaths of three firefighters, and the president declaring a state of emergency. >> there have been folks here since day one. and they are tired. it's hot, it's windy. they are watching lots of ground be lost, they are watching some homes be lost, and that just adds to it. >> 60-mile an hour wind gusts fueling the flames. the firing damaging powerlines, leaving hundreds of people in the dark and many towns remain evacuated because of the danger. >> after all that's burnt around here, they are hoping a break in the winds could help firefighters get a leg up. abc news, omac, washington. cruz now have the fire burning near livermore 25%

contained. the 2500-acre wildfire broke out wednesday. only one uninhabited home has been destroyed. the cause of the fire is under investigation. this morning oakland police are looking for a person who shot two people overnight, sending both to the hospital. it happened just after 10:00 on 77th avenue near garfield. that's in the eastmont neighborhood. both victims are expected to recover. police have not released a motive or a description of the suspect. happening today, a celebration of the life of 8-year-old maddie middleton will be held in santa cruz. she was murdered and strangle last month and her 15-year-old accused of the murder. today's event will include an appears by the minor league team of the warriors. it starts this afternoon tierces

permanente arena. it was a scary situation in daly city after a paraglider flew into a power line. >> can you hear me? >> yes. >> a neighbor took this cell phone video on skyline and oceanside drives around 4:00 yesterday afternoon. you see the man just hanging from the top of the pole. sparks flew dangerously close, and the impact knocked out power to more than 100 customers. >> it's parachute was flopping in the wind and something up there was shooting sparks everywhere. >> it took more than an hour for rescuers to safely reach the paraglider. they gave him a knife to cut himself free. he is expected to be okay. police have arrested a suspected gunman in san francisco after he led them on a chase across the bay bridge. highway patrol officers chased the man over the bridge to the

island yesterday. police say that's when he got out of his car and started running. a coast guard boat, san francisco police and the chp searched for more than an hour. eventually that man was arrested. no word on why officers were pursuing him. a man has died in fairfield after being crushed by a military-style armored vehicle. investigators say the 55-year-old man was riding on the front of the vehicle. as the driver went down a dirt hill, the man fell off, the tank ran over him. the incident happened on property owned by jelly belly ceo herman roland. roland restores military vehicles. the chp said a family reunion was taking place and people were riding tank as part of the entertainment. police are searching for a man and woman accused of buying gift cards with a stolen credit card. this is surveillance video, a photo, anyway, taken outside

reading. overall not a whole lot of change. mostly cloudy this afternoon. sunny skies for the afternoon on tap. we will bump up the temperatures a little bit as a ridge of high pressure begins to build. this will take us through about wednesday or thursday. so here is the setup. we've got a situation where we are sandwiched in the middle between a high pressure ridge to the east of us and a trough of low pressure to the west of us. in between that we get the nice onshore flow, the typical summertime pattern. temperatures are ranging, once again, that 30-degree spread. the 60s it he coast to the mid-and upper 80s inland. so just about the same today. nice afternoon in san jose at 81 degrees. 82 los gatos. cupertino checking in around 80. it was olawale yesterday in redwood city, upper 70s today. palo alto 77. look for 73 in san mateo with mid-and upper 60s. mostly cloudy skies at the coast. 69 san francisco. and in the north bay you could

>> if you have an alarm system protecting your home, you know how expensive it can be if it goes off for no reason. in many cities you get find. michael finney explains how he helped one woman escape that penalty. >> barbara shows us the new fence in her backyard. she erected it to keep squatters out that entered through an easement next to her rental. they left behind cigarette butts, a pillow and a mirror inside her shed. she had to rip out the rug in her living room after they got into the house and had to install a few fireplace after the squatters destroyed it. barbara replaced a side entrance into her garage with a steel door after squatters broke through the old one. and she activated an alarm system from adt but the system

was prone to false alarms. barbara requested that adt text her before sending any police or fire. two false alarms brought them from the city of vallejo for $380. adt normally calls the home phone first but she's deaf and can't hold a conversation on the phone. adt agreed to text barbara instead after we contacted them at her request. it gave her a free upgrade to a more advanced system, which allows adt to text barbara. but she couldn't text back. >> that doesn't solve my problem. i need to get a text and send back a text because i can't hear on the phone. >> barbara demanded that adt pay the fine, saying police and fire would not have come had she been given the ability to communicate with adt. it refused. "7 on your side" then contacted the stiff vallejo. it agreed to rescind barbara's fine. the bottom line is adt needs to be accessible to me the same way

as any other person can have access to their system. >> barbara might have a case under the americans with disability ability. abc7's legal analyst said it's unclear whether the act applies in this case. >> ada applies to public accommodations, to facilities, and adt isn't really either one of those things. it's a service provider. >> he suggests barbara might have better luck asserting her rights under california law which he calls more generous. adt did not return our request for comment. >> adt had previously offered barbara the opportunity to cancel her alarm contract, but she refused, saying she wants alarm protection just like everyone else. emmenic he will finney, "7 on your side." >> oh, baby, or should i say babies? washington's national zoo has two new baby pandas. the mamma gave birth to twins yesterday. the first baby born at 5:35 p.m.

aircraft was taking part in an airshow yesterday. it was doing an acrobatic loop before it hit the ground and exploded, killing the seven victims. the pilot is in serious condition this morning. 15 other people were injured. one of the bay area's more popular tourist destinations will be closed beginning today. the uss hornet, registered state and national landmark and home of the largest collection of apollo space mission artifacts on the west coast, will be off-limits for one week. crews will be giving the hornet the ones-over for maintenance and restoration to get everything literally in ship shape. a recent crackdown on san francisco bicyclists led to a traffic-blocking protest. the darth of that anger hopped on a bicycle himself in an unusual outreach effort. >> it seems just the other day captain jonathan sanchez ford

>> take a good look in your yard. no doubt it's browner than it used to be. and take a look at your trees. they are also suffering in the california drought. here's reporter wayne freedman. >> in front of homes around the bay, this has become an unofficial badge of water conservation, a brown lawn. they tell us it's the right thing to do. but now we are seeing unintended victims. we are looking at a coast redwood and this tree is in trouble. >> note the peeling bark, the brown branches, the ability to see sky through canopy. ms. kirk of the arboretum society in concord said trees like in coastal redwood is dying of thirst. >> the drought isn't going to necessarily kill them but weakens them so other things come in, bugs, funguses and that leads to their decline and sometimes death. >> we will see more this winner when they give way during heavy

rains. many of us or worsening the crisis by forget to go water our trees after we've turned off the sprinklers to our lawns. >> i was underwaterring. >> in walnut creek, gail has put more than three decades of love and care into her backyard. this drought here has been the biggest challenge yet. she's had a more than a little help from her gardner. >> the drought this year is very serious but it is a four year drought. we had a drought in the 90s and the 80s and the big one of the 70s and a lot of these trees today had to get through all of those. >> the methods of tried and true from drip irrigation to building a small well around the base of the tree to keep water from flowing away to enriching the soil with mulch to watering at night. her yard has responded in the difficult summer, and without overwatering. >> it's okay to have some things not look as aesthetic, but maintaining the trees i think is

the most important things because those are long-term investments, and i believe it helps the environment to have the trees survive. >> nothing is perfect. not even in a drought year except maybe finding a balance between water conservation and holding on to long-term trees and the yards we love so much. from walnut creek, wayne freedman, abc7 news. >> yep, because there's no indication anything is changing anytime soon. >> no. we are setting our sights on el nino. >> hopefully. >> yeah, exactly. but for now it's the marine layer and moisture we can count on for a little bit of a drink of water in spots around the bay. and the mist and drizzle helping out. with the robust low cloud deck, the stratus was once again reached the inbay and blanketing the entire bay area. it's starting out on the gray side and not too cool. yesterday upper 50s and this morning most of the numbers are

in the 60s. 61 san francisco. 63 oakland. and looking at 63 in san jose, as well. mountain view 64. from our sutro tower camera it looks pretty good. you can see the city down below with some clouds this afternoon. it will be comfortable many low 60s santa rosa and napa with 60 by the delta. temperatures 2 to 4 degrees warmer in some spots around the bay. 60s to start your sunday in concord and livermore. our exploratorium camera, it's gray. and with the cloudy start it will take the next several hours for the fog to burn back. we will have a little sunshine. the marin county coast, not so much so. the san mateo coast, and then high pressure begins to build in slightly tomorrow. that will allow for a bit of a warmup. so the deal for today, notice we've got a few breaks here and there, but the coastal clouds will still be with us right here along the shoreline. typical summertime conditions revealed before the lunch hour.

it's high pressure that's going to build in just a little bit to the east of us. as that builds, our temperatures will warm slightly, and we should get more sunshine at the coast. so by the middle of the week it should be almost beach-like along the shoreline. temperatures have been in the 70s in monterey and hazy conditions persist for the northern sierra and the mid-80s there also in yosemite. and in los angeles temperatures in the 80s. upper 90s for fresno and looking mild in san diego at 76. so overall we are going to look for temperatures to climb. this is one of our inland spots, antioch, that usually is warm. today forecast of forecasting a high of 86. but we will bump up the numbers a good 8 degrees or so by tomorrow into tuesday. so there's your warmup. then by wednesday and thursday, very little change. it's really looking like next weekend you will get some cooler weather. so the 90s will be arriving for the far inland east bay to

start the work week. overall today it's more like mid-80s. that should do it for the warmer locks. 85 livermore, 81 san jose. nearly the same temperature-wise. 77 fremont and palo alto and 78 in napa. 71 richmond with 69 san francisco, 73 in oakland. heading to town in oakland this afternoon for an afternoon game, it should be pleasant, 72. and then by 4:00 low 70s with the west wind up to about 15. the accuweather seven-day forecast, today a lot like yesterday. a slight warmup to begin the work week. that takes us through the middle of the week, even through thursday. even the beaches getting a little sunnier and slightly milder, and then cooler by next weekend. so looking pretty ideal out there. just hoping we don't get much warmer than that. >> yeah. pretty seasonal, though. >> it is. >> thank you, lisa. the 49ers will honor legendary broadcaster lon simmons prior to today's preseason game against the cowboys. the 49ers and simmons' family

good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, august 23rd. let's start with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi, carolyn. good morning, everyone. and the weekend is just about over but we are still looking at a nice day to enjoy after the low clouds and fog burn back. this shot from our sutro tower camera looks pretty good. overcast conditions all across the bay and with that the blanket of clouds allowing for temperatures to be slightly warmer today than yesterday. 60 napa and santa rosa. and a look in the south bay where the clouds will reveal a sunny and pretty warm afternoon with low 80s in san jose. we've got the 49ers tonight at 5:00. mid-60s during the day coastside to near 70 downtown.
