a good tuesday morning to you. i'm reena ninan. >> and i'm phillip mena. breaking overnight, another terrible day for some overseas stock markets. the sharp downturn in china not slowing down. >> and the main index in shanghai losing more than 7 1/2% today. tokyo down nearly 4%. now, the question, what's ahead for today for u.s. investors? abc's bazi kanani has more. >> reporter: a hopeful sign for many asian markets this morning up or recovering, but not the chinese market, still tumbling, which is what led to this, the dow plunging more than a thousand points on monday before rebounding to close down at nearly 600 points. >> it's going to be a volatile week. it's going to be a lot of up and down. >> reporter: traders now bracing for the week ahead still fearing the slowdown in china and that perhaps a u.s. stock slide is overdue. >> the market has gotten ahead of where the actual economy is. >> reporter: but the white house

believes the long-term strength of the u.s. economy is what investors should focus on. >> u.s. businesses over the last 65 consecutive months have added 13 million jobs. that's the longest sustained private sector job growth streak in american history. >> reporter: despite anxiety on the trading floor, there is no panic here. over the last week the average american 401(k) lost $9,000, but over five years, that same account is up about 60%. >> what all of us can control is how we react in any situation and how we choose to invest our money in any situation. >> reporter: analysts now expect bargain hunters will help stabilize the markets. >> the market is dirt cheap, and it is a good time to buy. >> reporter: now, experts say this is not 2009. conditions are not the same, but if you must draw comparison, they say remember that those who bailed on the market back then

lost half their money, and those who stuck it out recovered within three years. reena, phillip. >> good to remember, bazi kanani, live in washington, thank you. well, to presidential politics now and jeb bush taking his first battle against donald trump to the border. trump has proposed building a border fence and kicking out the estimated 11 million people who are in the u.s. illegally. bush says that plan is not based in reality. the simple fact is that his proposal is unrealistic, it will cost hundreds of billions of dollars. it will violate people's civil liberties. it will create friction with our third largest trading partner that's not necessary, and i think he's wrong about this. >> trump isn't backing down telling fox news last night that we have no choice but to round up the 11 million undocumented immigrants. and trump is back on the attack against fox news anchor megyn kelly. kelly returned to the air last night after taking some time off. some had speculated she was being punished for the tough questions she asked trump during the republican debate. in a series of tweets, trump

said "kelly was off her game" and this one, "like 'the kelly file' much better without megyn kelly. perhaps she could take another 11-day unscheduled vacation." well, on the democratic side, more signs that vice president joe biden is considering getting into the race. he met with president obama for lunch yesterday behind closed doors. if biden runs, that could put mr. obama in the position of choosing between his vice president and his former secretary of state, hillary clinton. the white house is not ruling out an endorsement of one of the two. well, after 40 hours of talk north and south korea have reached an agreement to ease tensions. among the concessions, south korea has stopped the propaganda it's broadcast at the border. the two sides also struck an important humanitarian agreement by promising to resume reunions of families separated by the war. some new details about those american heroes who stopped a gunman's attack on a train bound for paris. a fourth american, college professor mark moogalian, is being credited with getting the gunman's rifle away from him.

the attacker then shot him in the back. that's when the three other americans who've already received france's highest civilian honor stepped in. moogalian will also receive that honor when he gets out of the hospital. meantime, u.s. airman first class spencer stone is now receiving treatment at a u.s. military hospital in germany. stone was injured while battling the gunman on that train. the air force says he will be nominated for his service's highest award for noncombat bravery. stone and his two friends grew up in the sacramento area. the city also planning a parade to honor them. well, some devastating news from the world of auto racing. driver justin wilson who was seriously injured in a race on sunday has died. wilson was hit in the head by a piece of debris from another car's crash during a race in pennsylvania. he was airlifted to a hospital where he was in a coma. wilson died of his head injury last night. he was 37 years old. three heroes are emerging from that fatal shooting of a louisiana state trooper. officials say the three men risked their own lives to subdue

the suspect who was holding a shotgun. one of the men said the suspect had pure evil in his eyes right before they tackled him. >> you could hear him wrestling with him, and he gets on the radio, and my trooper is calling. you hear his voice saying, you got to get here. get some help. we need some help. your trooper is down. your trooper is down. he's bleeding. >> that state trooper died yesterday of his injuries. the suspect is charged with first degree murder of a police officer. he's also a suspect in the murder of his roommate. well, the largest wildfire burning right now in washington state has entered the record books. it's a complex of five large fires that have now scorched more than 400 square miles. it's now the biggest fire in washington state history. firefighters from australia and new zealand have arrived. they should be moved to the fire lines in the next few days. well, better news from the fight against a smaller wildfire near southern california's big bear ski resort. evacuation orders there have

been lifted for hundreds of homes threatened by the flames. the water cannons usually used for making snow helped keep the fire in check. still ahead, new concerns about the safety of ground beef. plus, remote control contraband. two people under arrest accused of trying to use a drone to smuggle goods into a prison. and found alive, a 10-year-old surviving a night in the wilderness. his instincts and ingenuity saving his life.

until rescue workers freed him. police say the bus driver swerved to miss another vehicle before slamming into the building. the other driver cited for making an illegal tournament part of the building was destroyed and debris scattered on the sidewalk. and the company that operates ashley madison, the breached website for cheaters, wants those hackers arrested and they're willing to pay of avid life media offering a $500,000 reward to anyone with information that leads to arrests after the hack, the e-mail addresses and credit card information of 30 million ashley madison users were posted on the internet. police are linking at least two suicides to the leak. the dramatic downward price trend continues at the gas pump. the average price for a gallon of gas nationwide is now $2.59. that's the lowest average for this time of year in 11 years. analysts predict it will drop below $2 by christmas. even though the demand for gas remains high. just ahead of the labor day weekend cookouts a warning about hamburger meat.

a consumer report found of the 300 packages of ground beef it tested almost all contained bacteria. a significant amount also contained superbug, bacteria resistant to antibiotics. the recommendation look for ground beef labeled as no antibiotics, grass fed or organic and cook the beef to at least 160 degrees. and starbucks is seeking to ease consumer stress. in a letter to employees the ceo howard schultz says customers, quote, are likely to experience anxiety's and concern because of the markets and be sensitive to pressures that patrons may be under and then to exceed their expectations. i guess taking a few cents off of grande wasn't an option. >> that would have helped. chill everyone out a little bit. when why come back, caught on camera. an officer smashes a car window, dragsing a man out and saving his life. an american racer devastated, the early

posted, but drivers ignore them. and checking your morning road conditions, it could be wet at that bridge near boston, as well as along the entire east coast. same deal down south in texas and for a large part of the southwest. and if you're flying, airport delays are possible in phoenix because of the stormy weather predicted there. authorities disrupted an attempt to smuggle drugs into a maryland prison using a drone. >> two men were arrested after drugs, tobacco, pornography and a drone were found inside their car, which was parked near the prison. similar attempts have been reported in south carolina and ohio. it's the latest in a string of crime waves for law enforcement, particularly prison officials. there are several challenges to curtailing the threat. >> there are several towers around many of the facilities. those are not manned 24/7. more eyes obviously on the air and on the ground would help increase safety both for inmates and for correctional officers. >> and it's not just a problem in the u.s. since 2013 around the world there have been 16 attempts to smuggle illegal contraband into prisons.

well, in new york an air traffic controller could be reprimanded following a fatal plane crash. investigators say the controller directed a pilot with engine trouble to a nonexistent runway at a closed airport. the plane crashed a short time later onto railroad tracks killing the pilot. the faa, which is responsible for air traffic controllers, had no comment. a fraternity chapter at old dominion university in virginia has been suspended after some of its members hung sexually suggested banners, which sparked outrage. the banners read "hope your baby girl is ready for a good time" and "freshman daughter drop-off" were hung at an off-campus house where members of sigma nu lived. the university is investigating whether those banners violate the school's code of conduct. well, a 10-year-old boy in utah is back with his family this morning after a harrowing trip into the mountains. malachi bradley went missing sunday morning while looking for mushrooms in the wilderness. he was out in the elements for more than 24 hours alone. bradley spent the night curled

up between some rocks as temperatures dropped into the upper 30s. he was picked up yesterday afternoon by a police helicopter, cold and hungry but otherwise okay. >> pretty good, yes. i didn't have anything bad happen to me other than tripping, getting a few cuts. >> that's a good way of looking at it. bradley credits the survival skills he learned from his father for keeping him safe. he says his dad told him what to do if he got lost. two michigan police officers are being hailed as heroes for saving a man's life. they realized that man behind the wheel of his car was turning blue and was unresponsive. one officer broke out a car window and put the car in park to stop it from moving. they removed him from the car realizing he was having a heart attack, and they started performing cpr, a life-saving move. some sports now, shall we? >> let's do it. some powerful display by the new york mets. but we're going to start with monday night football. unfortunately, it's still preseason style.

>> good morning, thank you. the weather is off to a quieter start. if we have anything falling from the sky the next three hours it is over the ocean. we have late arriving clouds and a cop pressed many layer so faster sunshine and warmer weather on the day planner. starting off cooler this morning, mid-50's to nearly sick, by noon, we are in the mid-to-upper 60s and the cost by 4:00, and low-to-upper 70s around the bay and upper 70s to nearly 90 inland. >> breaking news, also, firefighters remain at the scene after a fire overnight in a residential willing in san francisco's mission district. our reporter is at the scene >> 15 people total and a diagnosis have been displaced by the fire. we will show you where it started ated third floor unit of the senior care facility on shotwell street. the fire spread toabling next door. here is a look at thefire.

the viewer tweeted it to us from cell phone video. witnesses reported heavy flames and smoke coming from the third floor unit at look people. the good news is everyone made it out safely. one person has been treated for smoke inhalation. again, 15 people total have been displaced by the fire and six people, six elderly folks were living in the senior care facility and two caretakers with firefighters still here on the scene and they are looking and checking for any hotspots all morning, fire investigators are also here on the john trying to figure out what caused the fire to begin. >> thanks. wall street is hoping for the past but preparing for the worst this morning after two straight days of 500-point losses, the futures show investors could be getting into the markets looking for bargains. amy hollyfield is in the
