tried to grab a 6-year-old boy. here is the boy's mother. >> i was talking to someone earlier. it actually happened. we're leaving tomorrow, thank god. >> a second suspect was arrested after a three-hour, door to door church at san francisco general hospital. they say the tourist may not need to be admitted. the oakland man accused of killing hayward police sergeant scott lunger will be back in court next month. mark estrada was in the courtroom this morning. sergeant lunger was shot and killed during a traffic stop. the courtroom was packed with hayward police officers as well as lunger's family and estrada's family. estrada's new attorney spoke after the hearing. >> by all counts, he's a nice young man. and everyone who knows him, his family just, it's a mystery as to how he is in the position he's in now. >> estrada is back in court

october 9th when he can enter a plea. three years of court battles are over in san jose tonight. the city council approved an agreement with the police and fire unions over pay and pension benefits. as abc7 news explains it could help boost the police force by several hundred cops. the city of san jose shelled out $4 million in bills since voters passed measure b three years ago. the cuts led to hundreds of officers quitting or transferring to higher paying jobs in other cities and police, and fire unions fought back. >> we're looking to do everything we can to save taxpayers from paying those costs. >> today, a new agreement was approved by the city council. giving officers an 8% pay hike for a 5% retention bonus for current, and returning officers. for a department from 1400 to 951 officers, the deal couldn't tie experience to come back. >> now, you're going to get a

competitive retirement package and we've gotten a great start on competitive wages. it's going to be a tremendous shot in the arm. >> the mayor admits the agreement isn't bulletproof because it was approved by 70% of voters, a taxpayer could challenge the deal. former mayor chuck reid was the hard liner before pension reform. san jose faced years of deficit budgets. does he agree with this compromise? we reached him, on vacation, by phone. >> most people will see it's a pragmatic settlement, a reasonably good solution. it saves the city a lot of money and protects savings, it keeps the city on a sustainable path. >> the deal is expected to save taxpayers $1.7 billion over the next 30 years. david louie, abc7 news. san francisco police are

looking for this man responsible for a large cash grab in the fillmore neighborhood. security shows the robber grabbing the money at 7:00 at night on august 13th. san francisco police ask you to call if you recognize this man on your screen. police in san ramone announced arrest of three people in what they described as a larm-scale human trafficking operation. it's a case they've been investigating for 14 years. with the help of the fbi and d.a. they've taken james joseph junior and his common law wife in custody and charged them with trafficking victims, not only in the danville, san ramone area, but cleveland, miami and new york as well. tonight a part time soft ball coach has been charged with abusing a 12-year-old boy. a crime allegedly occurred more than a decade ago. the suspect, ortiz remains in custody.

governor brown will give the green light to hand out diplomas to those graduates that could not take the july exit exam. the test was cancelled leaving

about 5,000 students in limbo waiting to enter college. we're live with the impact this is going to have on those kids. >> reporter: knew this was coming after governor brown asked the ucs and california state universities not to require the exam for 2015. this at the 11th hour. eric started at san francisco state university this week. he almost didn't. just weeks ago, the university told him because he had not been given a high school diploma, they'd have to drop him. the only way to earn it was by taking the july exit exam. >> it was kind of like killing me. killing my dreams. >> reporter: it was a snafu made by the california department of education. during the summer, it ended a contract with the company that took the exams, therefore, those who needed the tests could not

take them. the principal of san francisco international high. parents and graduates were left in limbo. >> there were panics from families saying oh, i've been uneven rolled from college. >> reporter: san francisco unified protested and began handing out diplomas. the legislature took notice and decided no student would be turned away. there was a bill that would cancel the exam for thee years because it's not in line with the new curriculum. >> we're working on critical thinking and reading and writing skills, language in content areas and it wasn't a good measure of that. >> reporter: parents who came from guatemala just three years ago says his family is proud of what he has achieved. >> nothing can stop me now. >> reporter: he is the first in his family to go to college. >> more than 12,000 people signed an online petition

demanding an apology on behalf of the east bay book club that got kicked off an apple wine train. the ceo says the wine train was wrong in the handling of the issue saying we accept full responsible for this regrettable treatment. but the leader of the book club rejected the apology and said no to a free ride for the club and a train car full of friends. the club, made up mostly of african american women was escorted after the train after passengers complain they had were too loud. we're less than two week as way from a shut down of the transbay tube. today, there was a campaign to warn riders about the closure, the agency showed off thousands of pounds of new rails that would be installed. no trains will travel from friday, september 5th through monday, september 7th. there will be ferry service, more buses and something else new. >> part of this is a first only
