good morning on this friday. i'm phillip mena. >> i'm reena ninan. we thought the storm was going to pass florida but it looks like if you're tracking tropical storm erika, it could turn into the first hurricane to hit florida in about ten years. >> it's left four dead in dominica and could bring heavy rain to the virgin islands and puerto rico before taking aim at the southeast. here's rob marciano. >> reporter: florida's fear, scenes like this. tropical storm erika hammering the eastern caribbean with 15 inches of rain on the island of dominica. rivers of muddy water washing over cars, trees and debris covering roads. terrified residents watch as the flood when suddenly -- [ screams ] >> reporter: the side of this church sheared off. on the island at least four people killed. 20 missing. in florida, it's been 3,595 days

southwestern virginia, in total traveling 200 miles. but shooting himself fatally just before the trooper could get to him. >> it's affected everybody in this community, and i think everybody across the country. i mean, she was such a kind and sweet person. >> i texted her that i loved her and to have a good day. and she said, "good night, sweet boy." and that was the last that i ever heard from her. >> reporter: now some good news about the third victim in the shooting. survivor vicki gardner woke up from a medically induced coma and is now in good condition. jim avila abc news, roanoke, virginia. and vicki gardner has been speaking out about the attack for the first time. she was shot in the back, and she's told her husband that the gunman's pistol misfired as he stood over her. eventually she got up and walked to an ambulance after being wounded. she has lost a kidney and had

two surgeries since wednesday. tim gardner says his wife is now surrounded by family. the campus of savannah state university was on lockdown overnight after a shooting. a spokeswoman says one person was taken to the hospital. the victim's injuries are not known. police say no arrests were made, and the lockdown at the georgia school was lifted after a few hours. jurors in new hampshire began their first full day you have deliberations of the sex assault case at an elite prep school. the boy is accused of raping a girl. it was part of a tradition called senior salute. he denies they had sex despite the fact he bragged about it on social media. jeb bush picked up endorsement of eric cantor. the pair already campaigning together today in canter's home state of virginia. he was once the house majority leader. he left congress after a stunning upset. on the democratic side, hillary clinton attacking her republican rivals on the issue of women's rights. this as her poll numbers start to slip.

with a chicken farmer accused of animal cruelty. a group released hidden camera video claiming to show the abuse of chickens. those are some of our top stories on this friday, august 28th. from abc news, this is "world news now." good morning. we want to begin this half hour with grief after this week's on air shootings in virginia. that crowd we mentioned gathering outside last night outside wdbj studios. >> many people said they were watching live when the attack took place and police are moving forward with their investigation of the gunman. elizabeth hur is in roanoke. >> new evidence suggesting the 41-year-old former reporter, bryce williams, his real name was vester flanagan, was preparing to evade authorities. police finding a wig,

sunglasses, a shawl, black hat, and three license plates along with a glock .9 millimeter pistol and six magazines of ammunition inside his getaway car. >> suspect is believed to be armed and dangerous. use caution. >> reporter: flanagan committed suicide while on the run from troopers. this after killing his two former co-workers on live tv. >> please join us now in a moment of silence. >> reporter: exactly 24 hours later, virginia station wdbj observed a moment of silence for reporter alison parker and her cameraman, adam ward. their tragic deaths uniting a news team still grieving. >> cry, they hug and then they get the job done. >> reporter: in a suicide note, flanagan called himself a ticking time bomb. in a lawsuit against wdbj in 2014, he claimed to be the victim of racial and sexual harassment. allegations the station denies. >> i would defend the actions of every person in that newsroom when he was here because i saw the way he behaved.

>> the station ordered flanagan to get counseling before eventually firing him two years ago, counseling for behavioral, not mental health issues. back to you. >> thank you so much. the woman who survived the attack has been speaking out about it for the first time. vicki gardner was shot in the back. she told her husband that the gunman's pistol misfired as he stood over her. eventually she got up and walked to an ambulance after being wounded. she lost a kidney and has two surgeries since wednesday. tim gardner says his wife is in good condition despite all of that. tropical storm erika is hitting puerto rico this morning with heavy rains and winds. the storm dumped 15 inches of rain on the caribbean island of dominica. there's a widespread damage. at least four people killed by landslides. a number of others are still missing. about 80% of the island is without power. for many, there's no running water. erika could become the first hurricane to hit florida in the past ten years. residents are getting ready just in case. the power utility has spent

millions of dollars upgrading it and its electrical poles but that doesn't make them storm proof. meteorologist paul williams is tracking erika in california at accu-weather. >> appreciate it. we're looking at the southeast because they already have scattered showers and steamy conditions with the thunderstorms that's going to push through. in comes the party crasher. it will be erika, and she's going to start her trek towards the southeast, possibly reaching over the bahamas by sunday. by monday, strengthening to a strong thunderstorm or even a category one hurricane. here's how she's going to develop. you know, rolling very steady through this disruptive wind zone here. expected to lose a little strength momentum, loosing oomph. she will get her groove back towards florida because of more favorable conditions over the bahamas. getting stronger and wider. >> thanks so much. former president george w. bush and his wife laura traveled to louisiana and mississippi for the tenth anniversary of

katrina. yesterday president obama commended the city's recovery. the president also acknowledged much still needs to be done. areas of the city are sill suffering from poverty. he said the young people need to take a new path. jurors in new hampshire begin deliberations in that high profile second sexual assault charge. a former student at an elite prep school is charged with raping a younger student. gio benitez is there. >> reporter: in his closing argument, the prosecutor telling jurors 19-year-old owen labrie brought a 15-year-old girl to this dark science building and raped her. >> she thought she could handle going with an 18-year-old senior boy who's at the end of his high school career for a senior salute. she thought she could handle his advances by saying no and holding onto her clothing, that that would be enough to make it stop. >> reporter: the senior salute, a current school tradition at

the center of this case. graduating seniors spending time with younger students, sometimes intimately. on the stand, the alleged victim in tears. >> i was raped! >> reporter: she testified that she said no to labrie again and again. but labrie claims they never had sex at all. >> i thought to myself maybe we shouldn't do this. it hadn't been my intention going into the night to have sex. >> reporter: still labrie did admit bragging to friends that he did have sex with the girl, saying in one facebook message he used every trick in the book. but his lawyer pointing to messages labrie and the girl exchanged later that night, he wrote "you're an angel." the girl replaying, "you're quite an angel yourself." >> is this someone who was unwilling? >> reporter: his claim, the girl made up the rape charge to protect herself when the high school rumors started. >> reporter: and jury is made up of nine men and three women. after deliberating 3 1/2 hours still no verdict. they'll be right back here first thing in the morning. gio benitez, abc news, concord, new hampshire.

new video shows the dramatic moments as hundreds of migrants are rescued from a vessel on the mediterranean sea. 30 children and 150 women should dock in southern italy later today. the group that supplied the video says more than 700 people were rescued in various operations on wednesday. but there was no rescue for dozens of people discovered in an abandoned truck on a highway outside of vienna. their bodies so badly decomposed identifying them may prove to be impossible. terry moran is there. >> reporter: they died in a truck on the side of the road. up to 50 human beings packed into a truck by traffickers and abandoned on this highway east of vienna. this human tide of desperation is now cresting across the borders of europe. so far this year more than 340,000 men, women and children fleeing war and terror in the middle east.

said they were watching wednesday morning when reporter alison parker and cameraman adam ward were killed while conducting an interview. as the community mourns, we're learning more about the troubled gunman as abc's pierre thomas reports. >> reporter: vester flanagan committed suicide after killing his former colleagues. but newly discovered items in his getaway car suggests he may have wanted to evade authorities. police found a wig, sunglasses, a shawl, a black hat and three additional license plates, along with a .9 millimeter glock pistol and six magazines of ammunition. >> bryce williams, wdbj 7. >> reporter: the former tv reporter who would kill his former co-workers in cold blood on live television, by his own accounts was a brooding, ticking time bomb. his broadcast career long marked by struggle, with flanagan repeatedly in the role of malcontent, often clashing with colleagues, claiming to be the victim. in 2014 flanagan filed a lawsuit

against wdbj again claiming racial discrimination and sexual harassment, allegations the station denied. >> he said, i'm going to make you pay, i'm going to tell them that you sexually harassed me. i said you know that's a lie and i hung up the phone. >> reporter: in memos to the court, wdbj described flanagan as the problem. in a may, 2012, memo, wdbj managers wrote, "you lost your temper and used verbal and body language that left co-workers feeling both threatened and extremely uncomfortable." the station ordered him to get counseling before eventually firing him. the anger was simmering. in a recent suicide note flanagan wrote of continued frustrations, that he gave up looking for a job because "i don't need to deal with workplace bullies anymore." >> it looks to me that he had a severe mental illness. i say that because he appears to be delusional at times. he's clearly paranoid. >> reporter: the tipping point,

he said, was the racially motivated charleston church shooting, killing black parishioners. he put down a deposit on a pistol two days later. after charleston, flanagan said he wanted to kill to start a race war. pierre thomas, abc news, washington. and we're hearing from the tourism official wounded in wednesday's attack for the first time. vicki gardner was shot in the back and told her husband the gunman's pistol misfired as he stood over her. she's had two surgeries and is out of a medically induced coma. tim gardner says his wife is surrounded by family and she's listed in good condition. the challenge for the colleagues of alison parker and adam ward has been trying to work through the emotional ordeal while still doing their jobs. on the air yesterday morning, they joined hands as they head a moment of silence marking 24 hours since parker and ward were killed. parker's boyfriend, an anchor at the station, speaking emotionally about the last contact he had with her. >> i texted her that i loved her

and to have a good day and she said, good night, sweet boy. and that was the last that i ever heard from her. >> memorial services are being planned for both alison parker and adam ward. the shopping plaza where the attack took place is set to reopen this morning. police removed all evidence of the shootings. the discussion of gun control is heating up since the shooting. as brandi hitt reports, alison parker's father says he's now ready to be an advocate for tighter firearms measures. >> i'm sorry that she's not going to be there. >> reporter: andy parker is turning his daughter's shooting death into a call for tougher gun laws. >> these people are crazy. i'm for the second amendment but there's got to be some common sense. >> reporter: the gunman behind the shooting live on wdbj had a history of anger and aggression. according to station management who fired him two years ago. it's believed he sent this suicide note to abc news. expressing admiration for the

columbine killers and virginia tech shooter. parker's father says when you add newtown, connecticut, and colorado's theater massacre, it's finally time to enact stronger mental health screenings for gun owners. >> the politicians that kick the can down the road, they're in the nra's pocket. >> reporter: the issue, a long-time political hot potato, is now front and center on the campaign trail. >> if guns were not so readily available, if we had universal background checks. >> we have a serious mental problem. >> reporter: just before the shooting walmart announced it's no longer selling high powered assault rifles. not for political reasons but because consumer demand is down. it was a handgun that was used in virginia. and police say it was purchased legally. an online petition has also started to cancel a gun show in roanoke, virginia, this weekend. it has a few hundred supporters. as of now, that show will go on as scheduled. >> brandi, thank you.

michigan police say there may be a sniper targeting freeway drivers. they're investigating after at least five motorists reported being shot at on two major roads between the end of july and last week. there may have been others. no one has been injured. three years ago the area was at target of a freeway sniper with more than two shootings. the governor of washington says the largest wildfire on record in his state is not just a local fire. he's calling it a statewide slow motion disaster. governor jay insley joined firefighters on the lines as they battled the fire. a spokesman says all the lines are holding. red flag warnings were posted. cooler wet weather is on the way. rescue crews are fanning out across the caribbean island of dominica after tropical storm erika's deadly rampage. it washed away cars and buildings and unleashed landslides. an elderly blind man and two

children were killed when a mudslide crashed into their home. at least one other person was killed and more than hey dozen are still unaccounted for. erika could become the first hurricane to hit florida in the past ten years. residents are getting ready just in case. flower power and light has spent millions of dollars upgrading its electrical poles. that doesn't make them storm-proof. paul williams is tracking erika at accuweather. >> appreciate it, reena, phillip. tropical storm erika expected to curve up towards florida by the time monday rolls around. she's slowly going to gain momentum. think of this big storm as a big snowball and it's rolling uphill as it goes through the disruptive wind. as soon as it comes over the edge with more favorable conditions here, it's going to get bigger as it roll downhill just lining a snowball possibly developing into a category one.

southwestern virginia, in total traveling 200 miles. but shooting himself fatally just before the trooper could get to him. >> it's affected everybody in this community, and i think everybody across the country. i mean, she was such a kind and sweet person. >> i texted her that i loved her and to have a good day. and she said, "good night, sweet boy." and that was the last that i ever heard from her. >> reporter: now some good news about the third victim in the shooting. survivor vicki gardner woke up from a medically induced coma and is now in good condition. jim avila abc news, roanoke, virginia. and vicki gardner has been speaking out about the attack for the first time. she was shot in the back, and she's told her husband that the gunman's pistol misfired as he stood over her. eventually she got up and walked to an ambulance after being wounded. she has lost a kidney and had two surgeries since wednesday. tim gardner says his wife is now surrounded by family. the campus of savannah state
