>> i guess have to be careful today. a little too much. >> a highway headache leads to long waits, growing frustrations and cancelled plans for people driving on 101 through burlingame. all but one lane is open now. we begin with the latest developments on the closure of highway 101. sky 7hd is live on the peninsula where traffic is slowly getting back to normal. more than 15 hours after the construction accident. southbound lanes re-open end

around 2:30 this afternoon with the majority of northbound lanes opening around 3:00 45678 while the freeway is back open, ramps on and off broadway are scheduled to be closed. crews had to remove power lines from the freeway. cornell bernard has been at the scene all day long. a rough day for commuters but thankfully crews are making progress. >> reporter: yes, they are. in fact there is an army of pg&e workers out here making repairs on this twisted piece of metal which used to be an electrical tower, heavily damaged bay construction crew. the work is delicate. dangerous. when reason why it took so long to make repairs. power lines had to be grounded before they could be touched or moved. but it left many motorists stuck on the freeway for hours. detours were coming down saturday when southbound 101 re-opened to traffic, but for

most of the stay night the bay area's busiest highway looked like a ghost town. pg&e crew worked to make repairs after construction equipment slammed into this electrical towers friday night, leaving it a crumpled mess. >> got in our cars and ran. >> she was having dinner nearby. >> almost sounded like a bomb or -- i actually thought a plane crashed. a huge explosion. >> reporter: the impact dropped live electrical wires on to 101. the freeway was quickly shut down but motorists strands for four hours. >> hi car is day. there are cars at the front straddling the lines and there's a delivery truck that is kind of entwined in one of the power lines. >> we were able to get everybody off the freeway safely, make the area safe, and able to remove the wires that were impacted. >> reporter: a new broadway 101 overcrossing was under construction. caltrans says an excavator

the commute heading north flowing better than earlier. a different scene just a few hours ago at 101 at popular avenue in san mateo. you can see the traffic backup to the right of the screen. slow going on the left. current conditions better. the drivetime graphic showing us green there on 101 north, past burlingame, but again, see that red there? that's where the traffic begins. so, be sure 0 download the abc7 news waze app. >> caltrans trade to warn drivers, alert signs were scattered cruise the bay area, this alert came up in 101. the closure caused some people to cancel plans for the day. people headed to sfo were delayed and some even missed flights. officials say a number of airport employees were late to work abuse of the backed up

traffic. we met one family that was late getting to the airport for a flight to india. >> going to the airport actually, we need to be there actually 15 minutes ago. kind of bad. >> delta airlines and sfo had connectivity issues with computers lar night after experiencing the power surge. the airline's automated system was down for a brief period, and passengers were unable to check in as they normally would. quick check of the current situation on highway 101 in burlingame. this is live from sky 7hd. now can see the tower affected by the accident. cornell bernard reports that broadway is currently closed to on and offramps are closed on broadway. so we'll be sure to keep an eye on the situation and bring you details. weatherwise, part office the bay area enjoyed some much needed rain this morning. drizzle in spots in the bay today. this the skyline trail where hikers did not mind the precip.

as much as 20 degrees cooler in spots. we'll talk about low relative humidity and the first taste of fall coming up in the next couple of minutes. >> thank you. new details on a freeway shooting that left four people injured in oakland. the victims're apparently caught in a gun battle between people in two other vehicles on 88 ol' south of sixth avenue last night. three people were wounded by gunfire. a fourth person was injured by shattered glass. all are expected to recover. it appears no one in the two cars involved in the shootout was injured. developing news now out of texas, where investigators say they've made an arrest in the fatal shooting of a sheriff's deputy deputy darrin goforth was gunned down at a gas station near houston. wortharrested shannon miles for the crime. >> reporter: no warning and no mercy. >> six or eight shots and an officer is down.

>> reporter: a 47-year-old sheriffs defty and married father of two, guns down at houston area gas station. >> who is this. >> darrin goforth he is down. >> on duty and in uniform, filling up his patrol car, when investigators say the man seen in this photo walked up behind him and opened fire. >> deputy fell the ground. suspect continued over to him and shot the deputy again, multiple times action he laid on the ground. >> reporter: without saying a world the suspect took off in a dark red ford ranger, goforth died at the scene. >> the car took off down the street, and other people called 9-1-1. >> reporter: overnight an intense man point. >> today the district attorney's office accepted capital murder charges on shannon j. miles. he does have previous criminal history. the weapon was recovered and ballistics test indicate it is a match. >> reporter: goforth spent ten years with the sheriff's office. leaves behind a wife and two kids, five and 12.

but for us it's the source of our cooling. right here, first time on record three major hurricanes in the pacific, category 4, and we're looking at this system here to continue as a category 4, and then it's going to weaken. it will graze parts of hawai'i and bring once again some very heavy rain and high surf. here it is in the days ahead. shifting north of hawai'i, and it shouldn't be a huge impact but they have had some very, very rainy weather. remnants of erika in the atlantic right here, bringing in lots of rain to cuba, the gulf coast, and this could reform into a hurricane as it gets closer to the warmer waters of the gulf coast, and so for atlanta, carolinas, a very wet time. back home, it's sunny. we had high clouds around from time to time, and check out the numbers. very comfortable. 69 san francisco, 76 mountain view. 81 morgan hill. 68 half moon bay.

the waves are up a little bit. we'll look at a beach hazard statement in a moment. smallcraft advisory. still a lot of boats on he bay. 83 by the delta. 78 in santa rosa. dew points are coming down, feeling cooler up in parts of the north bay. a sunny beach day today, and tomorrow as well, even with the cooling. low clouds clouds and fog tonig, drying and cooler tomorrow, below normal highs as we get into september. from the coast down to the monterey coast, west and northwest facing beaches look for some very strong rip currents and that swell will be increasing the next several days. so dangerous at the beaches. 62 in oakland overnight. 63, fremont. still pretty mild out there. we'll look for this system to lift out but another one takes its place, and that is why we'll continue to see the cooldown day after day. so, another van taj point, look -- vantage point there, look at the three hurricanes.
