presented kanye west with a prestigious video vanguard award. the pair have a long history at the annual show starting with that infamous on-stage encounter six years ago. those are some of our top stories on this monday, august 31st. good morning to you. we begin this half hour with that challenge for hillary clinton in iowa. rival bernie sanders is gaining support there. >> and there's surging support for her potential republican challenger, donald trump. here's abc's devin dwyer. >> my goodness. oh, my goodness. >> reporter: trouble for hillary clinton in a state where she knows defeat. >> barack obama will win the caucuses here in iowa. >> reporter: eight years after failing to win iowa, a new poll of democrats shows clinton slipping losing a third of her support since may. her lead, now its lowest ever just seven points ahead of senator bernie sanders. >> this is not anti-hillary clinton.

this is pro-bernie sanders and pro a message that says enough is enough. >> reporter: sanders is leading clinton in new hampshire. energizing liberals, particularly younger voters, and he's not the only clinton alternative stirring excitement. >> hey, everybody. >> reporter: vice president joe biden surprises a jamboree of delaware democrats saturday building speculation he may get in the race. the new iowa poll shows a door could be open for biden. 14% of iowa democrats want biden as their nominee. 13% remain undecided. >> very good magazine this week. >> reporter: meanwhile, a stunning turnaround in iowa for gop front-runner donald trump. three months ago 63% of republicans viewed him unfavorably. now a complete flip. at the back of the pack, new jersey governor chris christie who clarified a comment suggesting immigrants be tracked with systems used by shipper fedex. >> and i don't mean people are packages. so let's not be ridiculous. >> reporter: candidates trailing trump now fully focused on making the cut for that next

debate. as for clinton, her campaign is shrugging off the latest poll saying they always expected this race to be close. devin dwyer, abc news, washington. and scott walker is putting a new spin on trump's idea of building a wall on the mexico border. walker says a wall along the country's northern border with canada is a legitimate issue that merits further review. walker says some voters are concerned about terrorists who might walk across the border. the suspect in the murder of a houston deputy sheriff is due to be arraigned today. shannon miles could face the death penalty if convicted of the crime. police say he had a lengthy criminal record but only short stints in jail. miles is accused of shooting deputy darren goforth in an unprovoked attack. goforth was remembered at a prayer march last night. thousands turned out for a memorial service for three firefighters killed in the line of duty.

the u.s. forest service firefighters were battling the raging wildfires in washington state. more than 80 vehicles took part in a procession leading to the service. others held u.s. flags and signs that read "you are heroes." they died nearly two weeks ago after their vehicle crashed and flames rolled over them before they could escape. police are still looking into the fatal plunge of an atlanta braves fan during his team's game against the yankees on saturday. the man's death was the third at turner field in the last eight years. abc's mara schiavocampo has the details. >> reporter: fans still in shock after witnesses say atlanta braves fan greg murrey fell 50 feet off the top deck during the seventh inning at saturday night's game against the yankees. >> someone just fell over the upper deck. they have to stop the game. oh, my gosh. >> reporter: fans looking on in horror as murrey receives medical attention from others at the game, including dr. joseph ricotta, who was sitting just ten seats from where murrey landed and rushed over to help. >> out of the corner of my left

eye, i saw something fall from the upper deck. like everybody else, you're in a state of shock. the adrenaline kicks in and you really don't think. >> reporter: you can see dr. ricotta and others at the game administering cpr. ricotta estimates for as long as ten minutes before paramedics rushed murrey to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. witnesses tell espn murrey was heckling at yankees player alex rodriguez when he suddenly fell over the rail. >> certainly it's a tragedy. it's one of those things that you hope you never see or experience, and i certainly hope i never see or experience it again. >> reporter: fans getting badly hurt at stadiums is an ongoing concern at baseball games. in june at fenway park, part of a broken bat struck a woman in the head. at the braves/yankees game, the flag at half-staff for murrey and a moment of silence to honor the longtime season ticket holder. atlanta police say there's no indication of foul play. the braves have released a statement calling murrey an incredibly passionate fan.

mara schiavocampo, abc news, new york. a junior varsity player from california is listed in critical condition this morning after undergoing brain surgery. nick brown was rushed to the hospital following friday night's game after he suffered a blow to the head. he underwent surgery to reduce swelling of the brain. one of his teammates is also hospitalized but little is known about his condition. tom brady and roger goodell will be in court today for another deflategate suspension hearing. the session is likely to be the last chance for lawyers from the nfl and its players union to make their points about brady's looming four-game suspension. the judge hearing the case had urged both sides to make a deal. if that doesn't happen, he coul. in the past, he's said he would issue a ruling by this coming friday. less than a week before the patriots' first game. well, they're cleaning up from severe weather on one coast and battening down the hatches on the other. at least two people died in the pacific northwest during

powerful windstorms this weekend and what's left of tropical storm erika is bringing heavy rain to florida today. abc's rob marciano reports. >> reporter: from the winds to the rain to the thunder and lightning, the country feeling mother nature's wrath from coast to coast. in florida, the rain keeps coming down as what's left of erika soaks the state. are you worried about the rains coming in? >> it seems like it's going to be pretty rough, yeah, the next couple days. we have some sandbags set up but figured we might need more. so not taking any chances. >> reporter: torrential already flooding roadways in a matter of hours. the west coast got slammed, too. waves on lake washington near seattle crashing around this highway. 50-mile-per-hour wind gusts whipped up this dust storm in spokane and winds brought down trees during an army air force triathlon injuring four runners. >> we had tents and had branches

last week. funeral services for ward are set for friday. alison parker's family says the celebration of her life will be held sometime in the future. well, wes craven, the horror film director who gave us "nightmare on elm street" has died. "nightmare" featured the villain freddy krueger and starred an unknown named johnny depp. craven directed the "scream" franchise. actor jerry o'connell among those remembering craven tweeting, they're about to get the crap scared out of them in heaven. wes craven died of brain cancer in los angeles. he was 76 years old. well, long before she married actor george clooney, amal clooney was a well-known human rights attorney. >> and the world got a glimpse of that side of her after three al jazeera journalists were sentenced in egypt to three years in prison. abc's alex marquardt has the details. >> reporter: it was expected to be the end of a long and painful process for the three al jazeera english journalists, the verdict for what were universally believed to be trumped up charges of spreading false news. but the judge stunned the

good morning. it is monday. and i'm phillip mena. >> good to have you back again. and we were talking about the big cubs game. i'm going to get to that in sports with reena in one of our later half hours. >> no-hitter. >> searching back and forth between that and the vmas all happening at the same time. >> also a lot of activity people are focusing on which i thought would be a bigger story was the extreme weather on both sides of the country. a major hurricane in the pacific. plus, a wet week for florida. it really was. >> yes, it sure was. the remnants of tropical storm erika moving northward through the state. the tropical rainstorm could bring flooding with as much as 6 inches of rain in some parts of the sunshine state. abc's rob marciano is there. >> reporter: residents in the pacific northwest cleaning up, a rare summer windstorm tearing through the region this weekend whipping up that water on lake washington. in oregon, snapping this power pole apart, sparks spreading

flames across the dry grass below and toppling scores of trees. >> heard a big crack noise and saw part of the tree fall down onto the line. >> reporter: even catching shoppers by surprise. rebecca hansen with her young daughter when the lights went out. >> we're stuck up here because the escalators don't work and the elevators don't work. >> reporter: tragically those winds did more than knock out power. back in washington state, falling trees and branches killing two near tacoma. across the country in tampa, florida, sandbags in high demand. >> not taking any chances. our side yard got pretty flooded last time. >> reporter: more than 15 inches of rain already falling this month. that saturated ground primed to flood again. so, you're in a susceptible neighborhood. >> yes, i'm in zone a. >> reporter: zone a, what does that mean? >> that's the worst. >> reporter: this station handing out more than 2500 sandbags alone. depending on how much more rain we get, to could go down as the wettest august on record in tampa. flood watches for much of the state.

much of the moisture left over from erika will be spread out and diluted across parts of georgia and the carolinas. rob marciano, abc news, tampa. air travel was disrupted last night at newark liberty airport following a security breach. terminal c was evacuated after authorities say a man made his way into a secure hallway. he was taken into custody after being confronted by customs and border patrol agents. a spokesman says that the man was sent to the hospital for evaluation. well, hundreds of people joined a prayer march in houston last night for the deputy sheriff who was killed while pumping gas. it's believed that darren goforth was shot to death because he was wearing a uniform. the accused killer faces arraignment today. here abc's kendis gibson. >> reporter: police in houston say they know who killed deputy goforth execution style. they're just not sure why. >> our assumption is that he was a target because he wore a uniform. at this moment we found no other motive. >> reporter: the ten-year veteran, married father of two ambushed friday night. police say it was 8:30 p.m. friday night. goforth in uniform pulls up to a

suburban houston gas station filling up his patrol car when he's shot in the back. police say the gunman continued shooting even with the deputy down. >> six to eight shots and an officer is down. >> reporter: police spending hours hunting the nearby area for the suspected getaway vehicle, a red pickup truck. 1:16 in the morning saturday, police release surveillance photos of the suspect. 3:40 a.m., a person of interest taken into custody at a home a half mile from the murder scene. a red pickup truck parked in the driveway. police charging that person of interest, shannon miles, with capital murder. miles with an extensive arrest record but no known run-ins with deputy goforth. [ playing "taps" ] >> reporter: dozens coming together to remember goforth as a vigil, a friend reading a statement from his heartbroken widow. >> he was loyal, fiercely so. and he was ethical. the right thing to do is what guided his internal compass. >> reporter: gas station pump number 8 is now a huge shrine

dedicated to the slain deputy. his accused killer is expected to make his first court appearance. kendis gibson, abc news, houston. >> just a heartbreaking story and two other victims of gun violence were remembered at a memorial service. the community religious leaders gathered to remember alison parker and adam ward, the two television journalists shot on camera last week. the general manager of the tv station where the victims worked recalled their young lives. >> i want to play softball with adam again, and i want to see alison dance, and i will in the wonderful memories they gave me, they gave us. >> the woman who survived the shooting continues to recover. doctors and nurses tell vicki gardner's family that she is the poster child for bullet wound recovery. police in atlanta say there is no suspicion of foul play in the death of a fan at an atlanta braves game. the 60-year-old man fell about

the family of a hiker missing for nine days says she's recovering after surgery to set her broken leg. she was found saturday morning in a remote area of the sierra national forest. abc's clayton sandell has her amazing story of endurance and survival. >> reporter: nine days alone out of food, painful broken bones, but none of it could break miyuki harwood's survival spirit. the 62-year-old hiker flown to a hospital saturday rescued after a seven-day backpacking trip in california's sierra nevada wilderness became a nine-day fight to live. a few days into the trip, harwood separated from her group, falls down a slope, severely breaking her left leg. >> she crawled for about two days to get to a creek where she could use her water filter to sustain herself till she was rescued. >> reporter: more than 100 rescuers had their own challenges. a 19-mile hike just to reach the search zone, plus smoke from a

dangerous rip currents. >> it's pretty strong, and the currents are bad. so that's probably why you're not going to see too many people in the water today. >> reporter: the rain from erika will move north over the next 12 to 24 hours carrying as much as 5 inches of rain to the carolinas and georgia in the next two to three days. on the other side of the country, stormy weather whipping waves into white caps in washington state. winds strong enough to crack this pole downing power lines and touching off flames. scores of trees were toppled and power went out. >> we're stuck up here because the escalators don't work and the elevators don't work. >> reporter: hurricane ignacio seen here from inside a plane is swirling closer to hawaii. it's one of three hurricanes now prowling the pacific, ignacio's projected track takes it just to the north of hawaii over the next few days. richard cantu, abc news, new york. tropical storm watches are posted in parts of hawaii, too. >> and while flood warnings are up in florida as the storm threatens the southeast, molly cochran continues our coverage at accuweather. molly, good morning to you.

on deputy darren goforth while he was pumping gas friday night. officials say the two men did not know each other and that the attack was clearly unprovoked. >> our assumption is that he was a target because he wore a uniform. at this moment, we found no other motive or indication that it was anything other than that. [ playing "taps" ] >> reporter: last night, hundreds of people marched to the gas station where the deputy was killed. a memorial is growing at the gas pump where he died. police in atlanta say there's no suspicion of foul play in the death of a fan at a an atlanta braves game. the 60-year-old man fell about 50 feet saturday night from the upper deck to the seating area below in the seventh inning of the yankees/braves game. he landed near an area where the players' wives and families sit. the long-time season ticket holder is the third fan to die at atlanta's turner field in the last eight seasons. and both tom brady and nfl commissioner roger goodell will be in court today for another deflategate suspension hearing.

the session is likely to be the last chance for lawyers from the nfl and its players union to make their points about brady's looming four-game suspension. the judge hearing the case had urged both sides to make a deal. if that doesn't happen, he could rule from the bench today. in the past he said he would issue a ruling by this coming friday, less than a week before the patriots' first game. well, president obama travels to alaska today to talk about climate change. ahead of his arrival, the white house announced that the name of mt. mckinley is being changed to denali. alaskans have informally called it denali for years. it means the high one. denali is the highest mountain in north america, just over 20,000 feet above sea level. to presidential politics now and surging support for donald trump and bernie sanders, two politicians who have virtually nothing in common except that they're considered outsiders. here's abc's devin dwyer. >> reporter: new trouble for hillary clinton as bernie sanders nips at her heels.

here's abc's ryan owens. >> reporter: on one of the last weekends of summer, two close calls with sharks have shaken two california beaches. one shark near san luis obispo taking a big bite out of a surfer's board. >> i was sitting on my board. i was a little bit further out than everybody else. i looked down and thought, wow, what is that under the water. came up and then bit my board. i thought it was a dolphin. he bit the board so i turned around and started swimming. >> reporter: that bite believed to be from a six-foot great white. the same day another shark just north of san diego, reportedly eight to ten feet long, spotted saturday underneath kayakers. >> came close enough to the swimmers to be concerned. the swimmers climbed on board some kayaks that were nearby. and were escorted to the beach safely. the whole time, the shark was following the kayaks. >> reporter: beachgoers near la jolla cove and shores popular beach and tourism spots evacuated. >> i saw the fin. it was going over to the

kayakers, and it was a hammerhead shark, and it was being feisty. >> reporter: at a time when technology is letting professionals film sharks up closer than ever, this footage from this weekend airing on discovery. this damaged board and the kayakers video, signs of encounters way too close for those just trying to enjoy the waves. that beach near la jolla reopened sunday morning, but the one to the north of here, that state beach is still closed. authorities say they will wait 72 hours before letting anyone back in the water. ryan owens, abc news, santa monica, california. >> the people are suggesting what to do with that surfboard. >> yeah. >> yeah, and some people are suggesting to make an art piece out of it. but she was saying she might not want to remember this encounter at all. >> i could see. you've had close calls with sharks too. >> and i lived to tell about it. i'm saying hello. thought it was my final moments. luckily survived. >> but it was a great instagram photo.
