♪ ♪ welcome back. more college students now smoke marijuana daily than smoke cigarettes. a university of michigan study says nearly 6% of the students get high every day, the highest rate since the survey began 35 years ago. it says students don't think the use is dangerous. drug use in general also up. drinking down. a major warning from the fda about powdered caffeine. the agency sent letters to five distributors of the substance saying the products put consumers at risk. a teaspoon of caffeine powder is equal to about 28 cups of coffee.

it's easy to overdose. the letters followed the overdose deaths of two young men. groups want those powders banned. two california high school football players are fighting brain injuries. they collapsed after last friday's night's game. at first it was thought they were injured in the game, but the arrest of another student on drug charges is racing questions. kayna whitworth reports. >> reporter: 15-year-old nick brown is fighting for his life, and teammate justin schwartz is recovering from traumatic brain injuries after what was described as a routine football game. >> he wasn't looking right. it looked like he was exhausted. >> reporter: brown collapsed after the game five days ago and required emergency brain surgery. his family telling abc news, the bleeding was caused by a high impact blow to the head. schwartz was treated for a severe concussion and released, but authorities are raising new questions. >> a thorough investigation is under way to ascertain exactly what happened including a review of game footage and other off-field factors.

>> reporter: police say the off-the-field factors include the arrest of a high school classmate accused of distributing the stimulant adderall. >> the rumor that we heard about was adderall. that would be the primary focus. >> reporter: police say they have not established a connection between the suspect and the football team, but by adding adderall to the official investigation, it's adding new questions about how the drug might affect athletic performance. still, there's no evidence either athlete took the stimulant. right now school officials are combing through game footage to see if they can pinpoint the moment the boys were hurt. also, nick's parents saying he is responding to some stimuli. kayna whitworth, abc news, los angeles. >> that's a little bit of good news. he is responding. concussions alone, we talked about this quite a bit yesterday, the nfl is dealing with it. a lot of focus especially in high school and junior high school sports, when people play soccer, as well, for girls. it's a big issue with concussions. a lot of parents saying so much

this morning on "world news now," searching for cop killers. this morning on "world news now," searching for cop killers. three suspects on the run after an officer is shot down overnight. police combed through an illinois community, schools shut down, businesses closed as the massive manhunt continues. we're on the scene. summer in september after the warmest august on record. the heat is on. much of the country dealing with this relentless heat wave and the outlook for the month says it's going to be in the red. ginger zee's forecast straight ahead. also new this half hour, no political punches pulled. jeb bush going after donald trump in a new attack ad, but will it work? the donald not taking it lightly. his tough response just ahead. and later in "the skinny," kermit's new crush after being hounded relentlessly by the paparazzi.

veteran police officer joe gliniewicz was shot and killed. >> special attention, fox lake surrounding area units, officer safety, man with gun. >> reporter: just before 8:00 a.m. gliniewicz reported seeing three suspicious people in suburban fox lake, illinois, 55 miles north of chicago. authorities say gliniewicz radioed in to say he was chasing the three men on foot, before losing contact. >> a male white and a male black fled from scene, taking the officer's sidearm and pepper spray. shots were fired, unknown direction of travel. >> reporter: the suspects, two white men and one black man, on the run. the sheriff's department scrambles resources, and when they arrive on the scene, they find gliniewicz with a gunshot wound. >> send everybody you possibly can. officer is down. >> reporter: gliniewicz, nicknamed "g.i. joe," was a married father of four. >> today, not only did fox lake lose a family member, i lost a

very dear friend. >> reporter: all day schools placed on lockdown, train service stalled, as s.w.a.t. teams swept the neighborhood from above, and on the ground, k-9 units scouring back yards and nearby woods. authorities warning residents to be vigilant. >> we're asking residents in the fox lake area to be on alert if they see anything suspicious, dial 911 immediately. no tip is too small. >> reporter: now officers from all over are extending their condolences to the gliniewicz family saying they are forever indebted to him for his service. abc news, chicago. protests are planned around baltimore to coincide with court hearings for six officers charged in the death of freddy gray. several issues are before the court including dismissing the case and removing the prosecutor. the judge also expected to rule on whether the officers who have pleaded not guilty will be tried separately. the city was rocked by protests after gray's death in april. gray who was black was seriously injured in a police transport

van. the kentucky county clerk refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples is due in court on thursday. kim davis has refused to issue any marriage licenses since the supreme court's landmark ruling in june. on monday, the supreme court refused to intervene on her behalf. she's now facing jail time. davis says that she's obeying a higher authority. >> absolutely had. >> second-class citizens is what you're doing, telling us that we don't deserve the same rights that you have. would you do this to an interracial couple? >> a man and a woman -- >> her attorney says she would issue the licenses if her name is not on the document. davis has been the county clerk since november. she's succeeded her mother who held that position for 37 years. hungary is taking steps to stem the tide of the migrants from the middle east and elsewhere pass ing through its borders on its way to europe. hung air's government says --

hungary's government says more than 150,000 people will arrive there this year. it has started blocking asylum seekers from its westbound trains. they say policy change is necessary to send a get-tough signal to those considering making the trip. meantime, look closely. that's an african migrant tucked into an engine compartment. the man and other people were found by border guards in spain. both were suffering from the heat and engine fumes. they were found the same day as another migrant died along spain's coast. such a big problem for these countries and such a difficulty journey many of them are making >> wow. the parents of a woman killed on a san francisco pier are taking legal action. the parents of kate stein lee say federal and local authorities contributed to the death of their daughter through negligence and bureaucratic bungling. she was shot to death by a mexican felon who was in this country illegally.

one of the claims is against the bureau of land management because the gun allegedly used was stolen from an agent's car. presidential politics and the war of words heating up between jeb bush and donald trump. jeb with a new video with the i toward the iowa caucus using trump's own words against him. >> i lived in new york city and manhattan all my life. my views are a little bit different than if i lived in iowa. >> we recognize the commitment of someone who has devoted her life to public service. i want to thank you to both secretary clinton and to president clinton. >> well, trump released a web video of his own later in the day highlighting bush's praise for the clinton family and on twitter trump noted other presidential contenders have tried to take him on and failed. and there is now a better chance that carly fiorina will be part of the next debate. who is invited and who is not still depends on how candidates are doing in the polls but now cnn has shortened the period. that helps candidates who have recently moved up in the polls

like the former hewlett packard executive. the next debate is two weeks from today. >> should be interesting. drivers in phoenix are on high alert for a possible highway sniper after four shootings in 48 hours. a young girl was hurt in one incident. that's not the only city on alert after a series of shootings. abc's clayton sandell has more. >> reporter: four random freeway shootings and tonight one question, who is doing it. along interstate 10 in phoenix saturday morning, a bullet shatters the windshield of this suv, a 13-year-old girl inside cut by flying glass. minutes later a shot rips into this tour bus, putting holes through the seats. but luckily, driver robert mcdonald was the only one on board. >> the person almost took me away from my family and almost caused catastrophic injuries to the other motorists on the street. >> reporter: two more cars were hit, one saturday night, another early monday. all four shootings within this 8-mile stretch. >> they're just random vehicles

traveling on interstate 10. >> reporter: detectives in two other states are also trying to solve mystery highway sniper cases. near battle creek, michigan, at least six cars have been damaged and in northern colorado -- >> somebody just hit me and i'm bleeding from my neck and i'm scared. >> reporter: several shootings since spring, some of them linked. and a task force is investigating the cases here in colorado hoping for new tips and new leads, but like the highway shootings in michigan and arizona, still no suspects, no arrests. clayton sandell, abc news, denver. it's definitely still summer in the east. it feels like july from the midwest to new england with heat and humidity. ginger zee says temperatures are going to stay high enough to make it an official heat wave. and that heat is sticking at least for another day or two depending on the location. look at some of the numbers going into wednesday for afternoon highs back to the 10 to 15 degrees above average range for some folks.

in this video from west virginia, a school bus stops, puts out the stop arm and not one but two cars race by. the bus driver honks and as a boy starts to cross, a third car nearly hits him. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: newly released numbers showing in just one day, maryland bus drivers reported that vehicles illegally passed them 2,796 times. and 83 of those times they were passed on the right side whereby children get on and off the bus. >> think about it. if the children are waiting at their stop, getting ready to get on the bus, cars are disregarding the red lights and driving down the right side. that is just a major safety issue. >> reporter: and it's not just maryland. 26 states counted illegal passings on the right and while participation varied state by state, all reported troubling numbers. and these violations can be deadly. according to the national association of state directors

surreal. >> i'm honestly shaking like that. i'm just very -- i'm in shock. >> reporter: this morning there are more questions than answers. who led to the shooting, who are these men. police have offered no further descriptions of the suspects. eric hong, abc news, fox lake, illinois. another scandal for pro wrestling. i an former star jimmy snuka has been charged in the death of his girlfriend more than 30 years ago. he was arrested yesterday morning in allentown, pennsylvania. prosecutors say he beat the young woman in a hotel, then left her to die. he was allowed to post bail partly because he's recovering from stomach cancer surgery. the cameraman killed in that on-air shooting has been laid to rest. funeral services were held in virginia yesterday for adam ward, the pastor told mourners just as in life, the young man left an impact on others through his death. those attending shared fond memories.

if they win, it could be its third time hosting games. the previous ones were in 1932, 1984, the winner won't be announced for two years. it's been awhile, huh? >> yep. a popular restaurant chain is denying it's been lying to customers. the class action lawsuit says chipotle mexican grill hasn't completely gotten rid of genetically modified foods as its ads have been claiming. the suit says that some of the meat, cheese and sour cream is made with animals fed with corn and gmo soy. however, there is a disclaimer about that on chipotle's website. you'll soon be able to get breakfast items all day at mcdonald's. as of october 6th, the chain is doing away with the midmorning cutoff. restaurant operators voted in favor of the move yesterday. mcdonald's has been testing all day breakfasts in some markets for months. not every breakfast item will be available, though, and the exact menu will vary by region.

it's being called the largest known apple account theft ever. the keyraider malware has affected more than 225,000 iphone customers can but it only targets iphones that are jail broken where the users have gone into the devices' security settings and can download unapproved apps. it's one of those apps that contains the malware. most of the users affected are in china. amazon is now offering prime subscribers something they don't to others. they can download programs when you're without a wi-fi connection such as a long flight. downloading isn't available for all programming. amazon still has to work out rights with some producers but amazon is also downgrading a prime perk, two-day shipping won't be available for every item in every market. this might turn me off. >> this was a big selling point. turning now to a hero police officer in texas. a woman is trapped in a burning car after an accident.

station on friday, there will be nine people on board, it will be the first time in nearly two years that so many humans have been this space. turning now to apps. there's one for everything these days, of course, but federal officials are raising concerns about some that claim to provide medical advice. >> there are apps designed to analyze symptoms. the ftc says several of them were misleading. mara shiavocampo reports. >> reporter: worried about a suspicious mole after exposure to sun this summer? there's an app for that. >> i thought i'm going to try this. >> reporter: julie gave mole detective a shot. it told users to upload a photo along with other information to see if you might have a suspicious mole. if the app returned a green light, it claimed melanoma risk was low. red was high. her husband died of melanoma, so her family is on high alert for the disease. she says she tried the app on her daughter's arm. it came back red.

>> reporter: a visit to the dermatologist showed she was fine. she says it give her a false positive. >> i became very concerned about this app being available on the market. >> reporter: so was the federal trade commission. it recently sued the marketers of mole detective and another developer accusing them of making deceptive claims regarding detection. both companies settled the lawsuits without admitting wrongdoing and agreed not to make deceptive claims in the future. >> we were not given evidence showing those apps were accurate in any way. >> reporter: with thousands of medical apps on the market and new ones all the time, the ftc says it's keeping a close eye on the market. dermatologist laura faris conducted a study on the accuracy of several apps for melanoma detection. >> three of them were automated and gave back an answer right away. >> reporter: the best one missed 30% of melanomas.

in this video from west virginia, a school bus stops, puts out the stop arm and not one but two cars race by. the bus driver honks and as a boy starts to cross, a third car nearly hits him. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: newly released numbers showing in just one day, maryland bus drivers reported that vehicles illegally passed them 2,796 times. and 83 of those times they were passed on the right side whereby children get on and off the bus. >> think about it. if the children are waiting at their stop, getting ready to get on the bus, cars are disregarding the red lights and driving down the right side. that is just a major safety issue. >> reporter: and it's not just maryland. 26 states counted illegal passings on the right and while participation varied state by state, all reported troubling numbers. and these violations can be
