refugees are hoping to make their way to western europe after a two-day standoff at the main rail station in budapest, hundreds were allowed to board trains heading to refugee camps. there's sharp disagreement among european leaders how to handle the growing crisis. president obama is playing host today to king salman of saudi arabia hoping to offer reassurances about the nuclear deal with iran. the meeting comes as the pentagon finalizes a $1 billion arms agreement with the saudis for their fight against the islamic state in yemen but the deal would require congressional approval. if you're taking the train this labor day weekend, expect beefed up security. more visible security follows last month's failed terror attack on a train. homeland security chief jeh johnson says operation rail safe has been around for years. johnson says the nation's trains are safe and in fact, he takes amtrak home to new jersey often. that security in train stations is being handled by the tsa.

the agency is under fire for airport screeners who are groping passengers. abc's david kerley asked the head of the tsa, does the agency need to do a better job of screening itself? >> reporter: in a video, a female officer on scene manipulates a scanning machine so that travelers a male tsa officer found attractive would be sent to him. he's seen inappropriately according to the tsa patting down male passengers -- at least ten cases over several months. the two the denver officers fired in march but not prosecuted. just last week a tsa supervisor an allegedly fondles a young woman, fired also facing charges. all leading some to wonder if tsa may have to examine the way it screens screeners. the head of the tsa says employees are held to the highest standards. >> reporter: do these cases suggest you have to change the way you screen to hire officers? >> i think what it suggests is that occasionally you have some bad apples in your employment. >> reporter: it's not just tsa officers.

look at this in san francisco. that is a civilian wearing a blue shirt posing as a security officer calling over two different women taking them into a small room for patdowns. 12 minutes go by. finally one of the real officers from the private security company knocks on the door. the man is arrested. but he, too, is never prosecuted because neither the women filed reports. that company, covenant, says the tsa and san francisco airport took action. more broadly the tsa is saying zero tolerance and more training should cut the number of incidents. david kerley, reagan washington airport. bizarre interruption of a u.s. open tennis match in new york. a drone crashed into seats and broke into pieces upon landing. the match was briefly stopped as police examined the drone. one of the players says she heard the drone fly by. wasn't sure what it was. police are still investigating. it was truly frightening --

benghazi attacks. another aide, brian pagliano, will take the fifth rather than answer questions from the house select benghazi committees. the clinton committee says it has encouraged aides to answer all questions, including pagliano. the defiant kentucky county clerk who refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples has been jailed indefinitely. kim davis was led away after a federal judge found her in contempt saying her good faith belief is not a viable defense. as prosecutors on both sides of the issue gather at the courthouse, five deputy clerks promised to comply by issuing licenses to gay couples. the governor says all citizens will be able to be married today. and there's a sharp disagreement among european union leaders as a humanitarian crisis gets worse by the day.

thousands of refugees streaming in search of a better life. >> reporter: these refugees have crossed the halfway point but here in serbia, face sweltering heat with miles to go on foot. a never-ending stream of people coming over the macedonia border. we're on the serbian side here and the people keep coming. we've been here about an hour and thousands of people have passed us. after serbia, they head to hungary where trouble waits. a dangerous barbed wire fence. a train station overwhelmed taking refugees to camps. listen as they chant no camp. they want to move on before money runs out, get to western europe to safety. before hungary and serbia, crossed through macedonia, and before that, a harrowing journey on the seas. 2300 people have died on the water this year. earlier this week, at least 12 more. including ian, just 3 years old, his corpse washed ashore.

his father survived in agony. he says he started steering the boat but it flipped in the waves. as he gathered his children in his arms but they were already dead. >> has to be wake-up call for the whole world. >> reporter: but activists say no one is waking up fast enough. germany expects to welcome 800,000 refugees this year alone. by comparison, the u.k. has let in fewer than 300. in serbia they've come too far to give up now, just 600 miles to germany. desperation and hope keeps them going. molly hunter, abc news in southern serbia. investigators outside chicago are hoping a videotape from a homeowner's security system will provide clues in the saluting of a police officer. a massive manhunt turned up no trace of the suspects. police say a gun was recovered at the scene but they won't say whether it belonged to the officer. and that officer charles

gliniewicz will be remembered as funeral services set for monday. he was a 32-year veteran of the department. he was known as g.i. joe because of his military service. terror and chaos at a tennessee jail as a gunman holds 30 people hostage. the inmate escapes and grabs a gun. he runs into the jail's visiting room. the suspect orders everyone to the ground. he alledgedly points the gun at a child. a few moments later, one of the hostages punches him in the face. one officer was injured during the incident. the death of a u.s. marine during a helicopter training exercise this week isn't the first such incident this year. that has defense department officials concerned. martha raddatz reports. >> reporter: u.s. military helicopters have flown countless hours in combat zones as we've seen in the most dangerous conditions possible, which makes the deaths this year all the more stunning. the majority of the 18 marines killed were on training missions. crash landing at camp lejeune, 20 marines on board, one killed.

in may, an osprey crash landed leaving two marines dead. a humanitarian mission in nepal that month killing six marines. nine more marines dying in two other accidents earlier this year. >> landing at night, landing at high altitude. landing with lots of troops on board all have high depends for the pilot and the landing face. and so this is where they'll likely focus. >> reporter: despite the tragedies, training is, of course, necessary. so when these marines get to the real environment, they're ready for it. martha raddatz, abc news, washington. the nfl has been sacked for trying to suspend quarterback tom brady. a federal judge says the league didn't follow proper legal procedures in punishing the new england patriots for what's being called deflategate. he says the nfl doesn't have the proof that brady was involved in letting air out of the footballs during playoff games. brady is now eligible to play in next week's season opener for the pats.

three spectators injured during last night's indianapolis colts game. at is retractable roof over the stadium was being opened, a bolt fell from it into the stands and another colts fan describes it as being about the size of a roll of quarts. a man and woman were taken to the hospital. the third fan was treated at the stadium. none of the injuries are considered life-threatening. the last of the three heroes who tackled a gunman aboard a paris-bound train has come home. airman first-class spencer stone arrived last night near sacramento. about 200 people were on hand to greet him. stone had been treated in germany for injuries received in the incident. the three men, childhood friends, will be honored by the parade on september 11th. pope francis attracted a massive crowd yesterday when he ventured out of the vatican to run a personal errand. before coming to america later this month, he decided to get new glasses and popped into a

arguing and one of them pulled out a gun and shot the others. at one point, the college was on lockdown. but it's all clear now. it's unknown if the shooter is also a student at the school. prosecutors in south carolina say they'll seek the death penalty for the suspect in the charleston church shootings. dig -- dylann roof phase nine counts of murder in state court and charged with federal hate crimes. in recommending the death penalty, the prosecutor said some crimes are so heinous, they require the most serious punishment the state can give. >> services will be held monday for the illinois police lieutenant found shot to death. investigators say video from a homeowner's security system could provide crucial clues what happened to the officer. gio benitez reports. >> reporter: detectives door to door, following new leads in the dramatic search for the three men police believe killed lieutenant joe gliniewicz saying they've obtained crucial new video. >> we have retrieved as late at last night what we believe to be some significant video. >> reporter: that video coming from a house near the area where

the 52-year-old officer was shot and found dead. the lieutenant was shot way down there, and in his last recorded call, he said he was chasing two white men and one black man. they could he have come running across this field over these railroad tracks, and right into the view of a home surveillance camera right in this neighborhood. >> there is a good probability they are still somewhere in the area. >> reporter: tensions are high here. a woman made a false report she saw two men running. helicopters were launched and 140 officers scoured the area. this as gliniewicz's widow delivers an emotional message to the community. >> joe was my best friend and my world, my hero. he will truly be missed by all of us. >> reporter: gio benitez, abc news, fox lake, illinois. >> one attack on a police officer near boston turned out to be a hoax. the officer himself accused of making the thing up.

the 24-year-old rookie in massachusetts claimed a gunman fired shots into his cruiser before it crashed and burst into flames. police say the officer fired into his own car. the incident triggered a manhunt, shut down schools, put the town on lockdown. the officer has been fired and is expected to face criminal charges. it's official. donald trump promised not to run as a third-party candidate. in new york on thursday, amid much fanfare, the billionaire signed a loyalty pledge. during the first republican debate, trump was the only candidate not to make the pledge. the front-runner now says he will support whoever wins the nomination. >> so i will be totally pledging my allegiance to the republican party and the conservative principles for which it stands and we will go out and we will fight hard and we will win. later in the day, trump stumbled through an interview with a conservative talk show host when asked about the qods force in iran, he mistook them for the kurds and didn't seem to know the major differences between hamas and hezbollah.

hillary clinton's former chief of staff spent 9 1/2 hours testifying behind closed doors about clinton's private e-mail. but another staff staffer is refusing to testify citing the fifth amendment. cecilia vega is covering the campaign. >> reporter: hillary clinton's former chief of staff ushered into a closed door hearing on capitol hill, grilled all day by the house committee investigating benghazi and clinton's private e-mail server. but brian pagliano, the former i.t. worker who helped set up that server in clinton's new york home, is refusing to answer questions, invoking his fifth amendment rights against self-incrimination. the republican chairman of that committee saying -- >> you're free to glean whatever inference you want from the fact that he did. >> reporter: clinton's campaign calling pagliano's decision to not testify disappointing, saying in a statement clinton has made every effort to answer questions and be as helpful as

after a two-day standoff at the main rail station in budapest, hundreds were allowed to board trains heading to refugee camps. there's sharp disagreement among european leaders how to handle the growing crisis. president obama is playing host today to king salman of saudi arabia hoping to offer reassurances about the nuclear deal with iran. the meeting comes as the pentagon finalizes a $1 billion arms agreement with the saudis for their fight against the islamic state in yemen but the deal would require congressional approval. if you're taking the train this labor day weekend, expect beefed up security. more visible security follows last month's failed terror attack on a train. homeland security chief jeh johnson says operation rail safe has been around for years. johnson says the nation's trains are safe and in fact, he takes amtrak home to new jersey often. that security in train stations is being handled by the tsa. the agency is under fire for airport screeners who are

groping passengers. abc's david kerley asked the head of the tsa, does the agency need to do a better job of screening itself? >> reporter: in a video, a female officer on scene manipulates a scanning machine so that travelers a male tsa officer found attractive would be sent to him. he's seen inappropriately according to the tsa patting down male passengers -- at least ten cases over several months. the two the denver officers fired in march but not prosecuted. just last week a tsa supervisor an allegedly fondles a young woman, fired also facing charges. all leading some to wonder if tsa may have to examine the way it screens screeners. the head of the tsa says employees are held to the highest standards. >> reporter: do these cases suggest you have to change the way you screen to hire officers? >> i think what it suggests is

that occasionally you have some bad apples in your employment. >> reporter: it's not just tsa officers. look at this in san francisco. that is a civilian wearing a blue shirt posing as a security officer calling over two different women taking them into a small room for patdowns. 12 minutes go by. finally one of the real officers from the private security company knocks on the door. the man is arrested. but he, too, is never prosecuted because neither the women filed reports. that company, covenant, says the tsa and san francisco airport took action. more broadly the tsa is saying zero tolerance and more training should cut the number of incidents. david kerley, reagan washington airport. bizarre interruption of a u.s. open tennis match in new york. a drone crashed into seats and broke into pieces upon landing. the match was briefly stopped as police examined the drone. one of the players says she heard the drone fly by. wasn't sure what it was. police are still investigating. it was truly frightening --

pre-season game. and just hours after a judge lifted his four-game deflategate suspension. when the patriots and giants finally got going, well, not too many offensive fireworks. it's now all systems go for the patriots to open defense of their super bowl title with brady in the lineup. the nfl is appealing yesterday's ruling but isn't seeking an emergency stay. >> that means that brady can play while the appeals process moves forward. abc's ryan smith has covered the deflategate story from the start. >> reporter: superstar quarterback tom brady back in the game. the super bowl winner's four-game suspension overturned, thrown out by a federal judge a week before the new england patriots' first regular season game. judge richard berman took aim at the way the nfl handled the controversy, saying commissioner

roger goodell denied the star requested access to key files and witnesses and saying the quarterback didn't have notice of his potential punishment for his alleged role in deflategate. but the judge, not resolving one critical aspect of deflate-gate, not addressing whether brady actually knew about or encouraged football tampering. >> if you're a patriots' fan, you love brady and you're cheering today. if you're the rest of the country, you're wondering, hey, did a cheater just get away with this? >> reporter: the reactions pouring in. teammate rob gronkowski tweeting, "let's go!" brady's players union claiming victory, saying goodell doesn't have the authority to be unfair, arbitrary and misleading. but the nfl appealing to protect the integrity of the game. the nfl's appeal won't stop him from playing in their first regular season game right here this time next week. ryan smith, abc news, foxborough, massachusetts. >> and you were very bold. put brady in your fantasy football picks. >> yeah.
