with plenty of sunshine for everybody. even at the coast some 70s to near 80. around the bay near near 0 to almost 90 degrees. we are well above average in many spots and the trend will continue over the next few days. here's an example. at sfo today we are expecting a high of 80. that's well above the normal of 74. i'll let you know how hot it's going to get with the accuweather seven-day forecast coming up. carolyn. >> my goodness. thank you, frances. we are now entering day two the bart transbay tube closer and all in all things are going pretty well. saturday's closer caused plenty of backups at the toll plaza, but no worse than a weekday morning commute. however it did cause a few sour notes for people going to a big concert at at&t park. abc7 news reporter melody woodrow has the story. >> reporter: 50,000 billy joel fans had to navigate these

conditions, crossing the street to at&t park. making the path a little more manageable, parking control officers like denise. >> because so many in a small amount of time and spacing, it got a little busy. >> also helping flag men with the construction workers install track and making infrastructure upgrades at the 4th and king intersection. many east bay residents had to rethink their saturday commute >> i thought it would be a real nightmare. >> the transbay tube is closed for weekend track repairs. >> i was planning on taking -- >> we were going to bail because of the traffic thing. >> not only didn't these folks bail, many said traffic was a breeze. >> i got on a bus and it took 20 minutes. >> for some, coming up with just one billy joel song was more difficult than coming into the city. >> oh, oh, wow. what would be my favorite? piano man. >> in san francisco. >> mine is the same, i'm sorry, i love piano man.

>> lord husband. >> abc7 news. >> you can download our free abc7 news app to get the latest information on the closer of the transbay tube. enable the push alerts for an instant update the moment the tube reopens. this week the evening rush hour drive between the north bay and san francisco is going to look a lot different. starting tuesday drivers will see four northbound lanes and two southbound lanes on the golden gate bridge between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. a zipper truck will adjust the movable barrier to add and subtract the lanes each day. that was one of the goals of the barrier when it was installed back on january. it could change based on accidents and traffic conditions. morgan hill police are still on the scene at an apartment complex trying to flush out a robbery suspect. at 7:30 last night officers say

a man, believed to be involved in a robbery at a game stop, ran into the complex on barry court. an officer tells abc7 news the suspect is believed to be in one of six apartments. they are all connected. officers are going from apartment to apartment. it's a time-consuming process. they aren't sure if the suspect is still there. a person was shot multiple times at the rockridge bart station overnight, but is expected to survive. witnesses heard several gunshots around 6:30. officers arrived to find a trail of blood through the parking lot and plenty of gun cartridges on the ground. police have detained and interviewed at least one suspect. the victim was found inside a car on a nearby street. nine san jose state students who were burned out their home are discovering the kindness are strangers. the community is rallying to help them. abc7 news reporter janet o. has the details. >> with not much more than the clothes on their back, these san jose state students say they

still have a lot to be grateful for. >> thank you! a postal worker who happened to be covering this route for the first time saw the students in distress and wanted to help. >> i asked them what they needed. >> this neighbor two doors down spent all day on the phone rounding up business toss donate food, mattresses and more. >> they are all struggling students. they need that help. they already have tuition to pay for, and they just lost everything. >> the house is a total loss after two fires erupted in the span of ten hours. the first fire scorched the second-floor unit of this duplex. a second fire at 3:00 a.m. tore through the attic. all nine students weren't home at the time. >> we started getting text messages and pictures and our house starting to burn. >> it's really stressful, but we are trying to keep it together.

>> some question if fire crews did all they did that knocked down the first fire that may have led to the second blaze. >> we used our thermal cameras to check for hotspots. none were found. the fire department stayed for several hours. >> they are calling it two separate incidents until investigators figure out what happened. meanwhile a gofundme site has been set up for the students as they figure out their next steps. in san jose, abc7 news. the largest wildfire burning in california is still growing. the rupp fire east of fresno has burned 85,000 acres. a lightning strike july 31st set is off. low humidity and hot fire has -- or hot weather has made the fire hard to control. it's just 25% contained. a big grass fire in sunnyvale is now out. about 10 acres burned in valen's park yesterday just after 11:00 in the morning. abc7 news viewer curtis light shot this video showing huge plumes of smoke. it took crews about an hour to get the fire under control. in the north bay two napa

county firefighters are recovering after their fire truck flipped and rolled into a creek. it happened yesterday morning on wooden valley road northeast of napa. the firefighters were on their way to a call but dispatchers cancelled it just before the crash. they suffered minor injuries. a utility crew had to be extra careful repairing a waterline that broke in san francisco's crocker amazon neighborhood. viewers sent us videos of the water pouring into the street at brunswick and pope around noon yesterday. at least one basement and garage reportedly had damage. a repair crew worked all day to fix the leak. they say they took their time because of an adjacent gas line. more complicated because of the gas line and larger pieces of concrete are coming out. we would normally break them up more.

we didn't want to break them up more and drop it on the gas line. >> water surface was not affected because it's a distribution line. new details this morning about an unsolved murder that happened last month in vallejo, the family of atiara westbrook is taking to social media to help find her killer. a website has pictures of the 21-year-old with the words "please help find the coward who killed me." westbrook was shot while driving her car in the early morning hours of august 3rd. investigators have spent hours searching for witnesses and any useful surveillance video. a whole foods store in oakland has cut ties with their security company after a violent incident involve one of their guards. we want to warn you the following photos may be hard to look at. a witness took photos immediately after the incident thursday at the whole foods lake merritt. she said a security guard slammed a customer into the pillar and knocked him hold.

yesterday whole foods fired the security company working with the firm and hired a new firm of private security based in concord. in a statement whole foods said we will do whatever we can in our power to make sure justice is served. our customers are always welcomed, and we want them to be comfortable and safe in our stores. >> san mateo police are having trouble with nonemergency phone lines. it all started yesterday morning. tech staff is working to fix the problem. emergency calls to 911 are still working. >> well, hot weather is on wait, and we do mean hot. not warm, but hot. >> hot, hot, hot. triple digit heat inland. a beautiful shot here from the exploratorium. you see the clear skies, a few light clouds. that's going to allow things to really warm up. plenty of sunshine. i'll have your neighborhood numbers shortly. >> thank you, frances. also next, the 49ers make a decision on the playing status of linebacker ahmad brooks

the 49ers have quietly announced outside linebacker ahmad brooks was cleared to rejoin the team. last month he was charged with misdemeanor sexual battery. the charge came from charges out of the home of former player donald. a woman who was drunk accused him of groping her while she was unconscious. league investigators said it was not warrant today place brooks on paid leave. he is expected to return to the team tomorrow and play in next week's opener at levi's stadium.

a student in kentucky is being connected with a drone incident that delayed the start of a college game. the kentucky took on louisiana-lafayette. as sky divers parachutedwent on to the field before kickoff, the drone was hovering behind an end board scoreboard. kentucky news has identified the person as a student. no one was injured in the incident. >> have you been watching this situation? around 8,000 more refugees and migrants are expected to arrive in munich today. a record number of migrants are entering macedonia, and german police are preparing for their arrival. abc news reporter molly hunter is in hungary with more >> first came buses, then boats, and now at the halfway point for

>> thousands and thousands marched to the austrian border, 150 miles on foot. and the hungarian government now offered buss and making it out of hungary is a cause for celebration >> we are free. now we are free. >> through austria and now free. molly hunter, abc news in budapest, hungary. >> a hammerhead shark chomped down on a kayaker in southern california, but did not take a full bite. the man was fishing off his kayak near malibu yesterday afternoon when he dangled his foot in the water. a ten foot shark swam up and sank his teeth into his foot before swimming away. witnesses helped the kayaker get back to shore. he was airlifted to the hospital. he wasn't seriously injured. the beach remains open. rescuers have been unable to find a blue whale that became entangled in a fishing net.

the 75-foot whale was spotted friday off the coast of southern los angeles county. the netting is wrapped around a flipper and attached to what is believed to be a crab track. rescuers did attach a red buoy to the line friday to help keep track of the whale but they have not been able to locate it. >> happening today, a 13-year-old girl whose amazing weight loss has inspired children all over the nation, will be swimming from alcatraz to san francisco. >> the next time you walk through a south bay park you might hear this.

and it looks almost like a mirror and winds are light and the sunrise heading our way at 6:44 this morning. in san francisco it's 60 degrees right now. oakland 53. mountain view is at 55. we also have a mild start in san jose, 53 but cooler in morgan hill. 48 degrees. and half moon bay 46. now we are looking from the east bay out towards the bay bridge in san francisco. but you see clear across the bay, you can each see the top of the sutro tower there. and we have some cool numbers in parts of the north bay, like santa rosa, napa still in the 40s burks elsewhere low to mid-50s in novato, fairfield, concord and livermore. from the sutro tower, now we are looking toward san francisco and the bay bridge. you get a little glimpse of the sunrise heading our way and a few high clouds over the bay area. about you lots of fair conditions out there. mainly clear skies. it is fog-free at the beaches today. even this morning. but there will be dangerous surf

conditions and then warm to hot for labor day. and the trend continues through the week. so a great day for beaches and barbeques, but just be careful if you are heading to the coast. until tomorrow night, especially for south and southwest-facing beaches we will see strong rip currents, large shore breaks and also sneaker waves. be on the lookout for that. we had high pressure building. as it continues over the next few days we will see summer warmth develop and numbers climb into the triple dim its. highs around the bay today will be quite warm inland. so antioch 94, fairfield 94, and lots of 80s near the bay, as well, with san mateo 82, palo alto 86, even san francisco getting up to 79 degrees. and morgan hill 90. it's going to be hot in the inland areas. if you are headed to the o.co coliseum, you need sun mats and sunscreen. temperatures in the 80s and

drops to the 70s by the time the game ends. a lot of people headed to the milbrae art and wine festival. mild to start. hitting 80 degrees. lots of sunshine and bright skies, as well, around 2:00 this afternoon and even for evening you won't need your sweater at all, near 79 degrees. overnight lows in the 50s with cooler spots in the north bay valleys. here's a look at livermore. and this is why i say get ready for the heat wave because in livermore the average high is 86 this time of year. that's pleasant. but we are already going to be about so degrees above that today, and then above 15 -- 15 degrees above average midweek. that looks like it will be the hottest day. still staying warm into next weekend, carolyn. you will find out with the 7 day accuweather forecast. triple digits next week and even around the bay 90s, and at the coast upper 70s. san francisco is going to be in the 80s. get ready for the heat. try to stay cool if you want. we are going to miss that.

have you ever suffered a cracked rib? it's a common injury and it's incredibly painful. theres a new treatment procedure and as abc7 news anchor eric thomas reports, it can result in faster healing, as well. >> after gliding 30 miles on his bike, dave's ride came to an abrupt and painful end a block from his home. >> i hit a curb and went over, and it didn't feel too good. >> let's take a look at your incision and see how it's healing. >> dave was rushed to regional medical center in san jose with injuries that included multiple broken ribs. that's when the doctor suggest a new treatment approach, known as rib plating. >> they go on the outside of the rib. you make an incision and expose the rib fracture. he said standard procedure in the past has been to let the ribs heel by themselves, but the breaks can cause excruciating pain, requiring painkillers so powerful they often interrupt a patient's ability to breathe normally, putting them at risk for pneumonia. >> being so sedated that you

don't breathe well at all >> the narrow plates are sized to individual ribs and attached with screws during surgery, as seen in this animation provided by the manufacturer. he said once the ribs are placed into place, the level of discomfort drops dramatically. >> basically, if you can immobilize the rib with the plate, the pain goes away. >> since the procedure is relatively new, insurance coverage can can a case-by-case basis. but any cost is offset by faster recovery times. >> people are generally out of the hospital in two or three days. >> dave said his ribs have recovered to the point he's ready to hit the road again. >> i joke with my wife, i would like to ride across the u.s. sometime. >> abc7 news. >> those are recommended where there are two or more ribs broken and the bones don't line up well because of the breaks. >> still ahead on the abc7 sunday morning news, baling you

morning like santa rosa at 49, napa 46. low to mid-50s through novato, fairfield, concord and livermore. a pretty shot here. santa cruz beach. boardwalk there. you can see it's going to be a nice day with no clouds in sight. but just be careful because we have clear skies now and sunny conditions later. even though it's fog-free at the beaches and temperatures nice, there are dangerous surf conditions through tomorrow evening. keep that in mind, especially if you have little kids heading out toward the water. strong rip currents and large breaker waves and sneak are waves. then it will be even warmer for labor day. we will see some hot conditions develop as well midweek. here's why. we have the area of high pressure that continues to build and we will see summer warmth with a slight offshore flow for the middle of the week, allowing temperatures to climb above 100 degrees. winds are going to be light throughout the day. so here's the forecast animation right now. almost nonexistent. even by the afternoon when we see our strongest winds, the

gustiest winds, even 30 miles an hour or at least 20 miles an hour from the west, it will be very light this average, as well. again, that also contributes to the warmer weather. so that means you will see a high of 90 today in morgan hill. san jose 87 degrees. and santa cruz 88. look for upper 80s, as well, through redwood city into mountain view. and 75 in pacifica. warm and mild at the beaches. 74 in the sun vet district. downtown 79. and you will hit the upper 80s and 90s napa, novato, and it will be a great day in berkeley for the brazilian festival. 79. mid-80s through fremont. and also some mid-90s in the warmest locations like livermore. sausalito and the art festival, should be nice with most temperatures in the 70s all throughout the day, even into this evening. dropping to 77 degrees by 5:00.
