good afternoon, everybody. >> first at 4:00 we start with the heat wave that's gripping the bay area. this is a live picture from our camera at the boardwalk. this is certainly a popular spot to cool down. you see those beachgoers out there. temperatures in the 80s there today. >> that looks like fun. that's the place to be. closer to home, abc 7 news -- east bay temperatures from the 90s to the triple digits inland. >> we have live team coverage for you on the heat wave this afternoon. let's begin with spencer christian. he's here with an accuweather update. >> this is potentially dangerous heat. with this high intense, there

are health hazards. let's look at current conditions. we've got sunny skies and hot weather across the bay area. here's a look at high temperatures so far. 103 degrees in antioch. oakland airport at 94 degrees. set a new record here for this date. 95 here. other numerous locations in the mid to upper 90s. we have a heat advisory in effect today and tomorrow for the entire bay area from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. i mentioned health hazards earlier associated with this heat. and we have poor air quality which is compounding the problem we have. air quality projection for the next few days. tomorrow will be as well. it's quite likely thursday and friday will be also as no improvement is expected until the weekend. we do expect a little bit of a letup by the weekend. certainly the triple digit heat.

inmate at the santa clara county jail. >> they made their first court appearance today. david louie is live with additional charges the former deputies are now facing. >> well, the district attorney's office revealed late today that the three deputies matthew farris, jereh lubrin and rafael rodriguez are charged on the same day accused of killing an inmate. the attorney for one of those deputies says they're trying to get out on bail. the three former correctional facility workers entered. not one of them looked at the gallery. each waived arraignment. they will enter jail with no bail until the end of next week. the file charges them with the murder of mentally ill inmate michael tyree.

tyree was beat ton death receiving severe injuries to his spleen and liver. there was also a second felony count filed for a second assault in the zwral. >> we also filed charges against these three correctional officers for an assault on a different inmate a few minutes before the murder of michael tyree. >> reporter: bill rapaport told me he will seek bail for his client because he's not a flight risk. his father is a retired prosecutor in the district attorney's office. however, the district attorney will oppose any such motion. >> when someone commits murder, there's no bail. >> reporter: as the case goes forward, his intent is to try all three officers together. although they could be tried separately. legal analyst steven clarke says a plea bargain is also a possibility. >> do they need one of these officers to make their case in trial? that will be the key as to whether there's any type of plea bargain with respect to one or more of the officers.

a live look now at a big change to the evening commute over the golden gate bridge. starting today there are now four lanes heading into marin county for the afternoon drive home. just two coming back into san francisco. a zipper truck will adjust a movable barrier every average to give an extra lane. that was one of the goals for the barrier when it was installed back in january. the transbay tube reopened this morning. it was shut down over the labor day weekend for major improvements. matt keller talked with commuters to find out if they noticed a difference. >> reporter: the transbay tube and tens of thousands of b.a.r.t. riders are back on the

track. between the west oakland station and the downtown oakland tunnel. b.a.r.t. says it will make for a smoother, more efficient, and safer ride. but what do regular riders say? we asked riders to find out. laura isaacs works in the city. are you noticing any difference? >> not at the moment. you still get the pop in the tunnel in your ears. it doesn't sound as noisy but not really, no. >> reporter: does it feel smoother? >> not as bumpy. like sometimes you rock back and forth. so yeah, it does feel a little smoother. >> reporter: unfortunately the new track can't make it cooler or less packed in the cars. common complaints we heard in the cars on the ride over. for these people it still beats sitting in traffic on the bay bridge. >> we can take it.

ridge of high pressure that will keep the heat wave going through friday. so let's take a look at what we expect overnight. clear skies, mild conditions with overnight lows mainly in the low to mid-60s inland and around the bay. the exception would be in the north bay valleys where lows may drop into the mid to upper 50s. along the coast we'll probably see upper 50s. tomorrow another scorcher in the south bay. we'll see highs ranging from 100 to cupertino. 104 morgan hill. look for palo alto and mountie view, low to mid 80s. a high of 86 pacifica. 94 the expected high in downtown san francisco. up in the north bay valleys, 101 at santa rosa. 102 at napa. we go to the east bay now where we expect highs of 95 in oakland. 97 in union city. and the inland east bay, all

no word yet on how much water was lost, but it did cause quite a puddle down hill. in san francisco police are looking for the gunman who went on a rampage and injured two men at a bus stop and put bullet holes into nearby businesses. police may have an important lead. amy holingfield has more. >> reporter: san francisco residents were greeted by crime tape. bullets shattered the glass at 1 11:30 last night. it was a stark reminder this morning of the violence that plagues this neighborhood. >> it's a bad neighborhood. from daylight to dark, during the daytime it's okay. after dark you don't even want to be caught out. >> reporter: the two men were taken to the hospital in stable condition. a 35-year-old man was shot in the foot. a 54-year-old in the chest. police are looking into whether it was gang related and who was

the target. even if the attack was personal, it had an impact on the public. >> i pull the shade open, the blinds open. i look up and i see this huge hole. >> reporter: when jasmine payne got to her office today, a bullet had pierced a window. it's across the street from where the shooting happened. >> it was unsettling. this morning i was afraid. >> my heart goes out to this community out here who has to deal with, you know, this type of incident. >> reporter: roberto is trying to stop the violence in the mission with his nonprofit group homey. an anti-gang group focusing on the youth. >> there is progress being made. i think the community has come together in some really positive ways. you know, we have an initiative of we'll map the peace. it's several different organizations looking to target the disenfranchised youth in our community. >> reporter: police have not made any arrests in this

shooting but say they have good video evidence from the cameras in the area. amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. freddie gray died last april. police say his family will get $6.5 million from the city of baltimore. that is expected to be approved tomorrow. six police officers have been charged in his death. each has pleaded not guilty. the woman who survived an on-air shooting that killed two tv news journalists in virginia left the hospital today. vicki gardner was being interviewed on live tv on august 26th when a gunman opened fire. wdbj reporting alison parker and her cameraman adam ward were killed. the gunman killed himself after a police chase. doctors had to remove one of gardner's kidneys and some of her colon. the new cheating accusations

well, we could use some of this rain around here. several inches fell overnight in green bay, wisconsin, causing widespread street flooding. that part we don't need. flash flood warnings posted in six counties through the morning hours. >> the only moisture we're going to see around here is the sweat dripping off spencer christian right now outside. >> he sounds so sympathetic, right, spencer? >> yeah, right. >> i feel for you. >> just dripping off his lips as the perspiration is dripping off me. sunny and hot and it will be for the next few days.

powerful hurricane linda now a category 3. not too far southwest of cabo san lucas. good news is it's expected to move northward and westward away from popular areas. there's one model that goes contrary to that. we expect it to move away by the weekend. pose no threat to the areas. some high clouds and a little bit of moisture moving up into the bay area. could make for muggy conditions here. we'll keep tracking that for you. look for triple digit highs in chico, sacramento, fresno, and palm springs. 95 in los angeles and perhaps some scattered thunderstorms in southern california as well. here in the bay area, we'll see triple digits in our inland areas again. and upper 90s around the bay. 94 the expected high in san francisco. 95 in oakland. 82 in half-moon bay. and we'll use livermore as our high temperature trend indicator over the next seven days. look for highs of 106 the next two days in livermore. 104 friday. and then temperatures, highs will drop into the 90s over the

weekend. that's typical of what our inland areas can expect over the next several days. >> all right. come down and is join us in the ac. >> i'll be happy to do that. >> all right. breaking news out of las vegas. a live picture from mccarron international airport. that is a british airway flight on the runway. there was a fire on this flight bound for london. the fire has been put out. look by the wing on the left-hand side. you can see a noticeable scorch mark on the plane. no known injuries and all passengers are set to be removed from the aircraft. imagine how scary that had to be. the airport is still open, but we've just learned that one runway is out of service. that could cause some delays for any bay area passengers headed to or from las vegas. we're rk working to get more information on this. we'll have updated on abc 7 bay area. half of the country is at risk for the disease that kills 3 million people every year. but first, defying death

a new report by our sister network espn claims that the spygate scandal involving the new england patriots was much deeper than originally thought. and that roger goodell helped sweep it under the rug and that is part of the reason why he then came back and hammered the patriots recently in deflategate. the report says the patriots secretly videotaped the signals from 40 different games from 2000 to 2007. also says pats employees used to sneak into visiting locker rooms and try to steal the list of plays opposing teams were set to run. a lot of team dos that. goodell says he suspended the investigation only three days after it began and levied sanctions against the team for only one incident in 2007 then had all the tapes destroyed. we have a link to the full report on abc7news.com.

crowds greeted a dentist in minnesota as he returned back to work today for the first time since killing one of africa's most beloved lions. dr. walter palmer says his patients and staff wanted him back and he contends he's done nothing wrong. elizabeth hurst tells us more. >> reporter: the man called the most hated dentist in the world arrived with private security ignoring the shouting from protesters. reporting to work for the first time in nearly two months. >> i think he should probably leave town. >> reporter: since his killing of cecil the lion in july, dr. walter palmer has kept a low profile with protesters shutting down his practice and his family receiving death threats. >> he should pay for what he did. if we don't do something now -- going to make me cry -- i just hate the thought of it. >> reporter: palmer always

maintained he believed the hunt was legal. saying only his local guides in africa have been criminalally charged in this case. >> the attorney working with him says he has been in contact with the u.s. authorities, haven't heard from anyone in zimbabwe about these reports that he might be extradited. >> reporter: on this day citing his responsibility as a health professional, it was back to work for palmer with some of his patients showing support. >> i don't think all the negative attention and what's going on would affect his ability to practice dentistry in any way. >> reporter: palmer says he's now hoping for some sense of normalcy back in his life. police in the mean time says they will continue to monitor the situation. but so far no major issues reported. abc news, new york. ernie asks via facebook, how long can people do a remodel on

three major reporting agencies. so get a new one every four months. that's what i suggest you do rather than pay money for it. >> perfect. thank you. >> new research suggests that half of all adults in the u.s. have diabetes or prediabetes. researchers looked into health surveys and found b that 12% to 14% of adults were diagnosed with diabetes in 2012. most have type 2 diabetes. that's the type linked with diet, obesity, and inactivity. and others are prediabetic. in other health and news, scientists have discovered what's behind that runners high. >> and most iphone fitness app dos not make the grade. here's jane king with today's wellness report. >> reporter: most iphone exercise apps don't give you the best workout. university of florida researchers tested 30 free iphone workout apps to see how well they meet all of the american college of sports medicine guidelines. the results were not great.

most of the apps did meet the standards for aerobic and strength training. but most of them were not up to snuff when it came to flexibility exercises. scientists at the university of montreal have discovered that the hormone leptin could be to blame nor runners high. when in motion, the levels may fall and that sends a hunger signal to the pleasure center of the brain. a new study published in the american journal of pediatrics show teens are using e-cigare e e-cigarettes in place of cannabis. hash oil or wax can have thc concentrations 4 to 30 times as high as dried cannabis. and the pumpkin spice latte at starbucks will contain real pumpkin for the first time.

they hope a ban would help reduce teen tobacco use. the centers for disease control and prevention says high school athletes use smokeless tobacco nearly twice as much as non-athletes. a new law still has to go to a final vote. firefighters from east contra costa county are being hailed as heroes for saving a man even after their fire engine broke down. >> reporter: it's the kind of job where seconds can make all the difference. on sunday stranded in a parking lot, the firefighters of engine 52 here made a split second decision that saved a man's life. the day started like any other for engine 52. but it ended in a way no one could have predicted. on the way to the call, they lost the services of thafr truck. >> we had a mechanical failure on the engine and lost power. >> we're out of service, mechanical.

permission to use his name. he said everything she shared with us today he also reported to the detectives investigating michael tyree's death. inside the santa clara county main jail, armando galvin said he heard screams coming from a nearby inmate's cell the night before michael tyree died. >> saying i'm sorry, i'm sorry. please, please, i'm sorry. >> reporter: galvin says the screams and pleas were followed by silence. at the time, correctional deputies matthew farris, jereh lub bin, and rodriguez were doing rounds. he said when they got to his cell, they were acting differently and hardly searched. about an hour later lubrin returned. >> excuse my language, but he said does he usually [ bleep ] himself. then he went back to tyree's cell and was calling his name.
