>> everybody's good. thank you. >> reporter: these images show that molten pieces of engine shot towards the fuselage. >> if the fire trucks hadn't been there, if the fire had been able to build and gotten near the fuel tanks where people couldn't have gotten out and maybe had come through the cabin wall, this could have been very serious. >> reporter: aviation experts telling us had the pilots noticed the fire a couple of seconds later, they may not have been able to abort the takeoff meaning they would have had to have lifted off with the wing on fire, a very different outcome. matt gutman, abc news, las vegas. we move now to california where a first date turned to tragedy in the mountains east of los angeles a powerful rainstorm triggered flash flooding and trapped a young couple hiking the trails. they held hands trying to cross out of the runoff. two sheriff's deputies heard the woman calling for help and rescued her. but her companion was swept away. searchers found his body several hours later. a fast and furious rainstorm set off flash flooding in parts of new york city, swamping this

neighborhood on staten island. streets turned to rivers trapping drivers in their cars. neighbors blame poor drainage in the area. and with heavy rain in the forecast today, this could all happen yet again. this morning's commute could be tense for thousands on the roadways around phoenix. police investigating a possible serial shooter after ten suspicious incidents in the past ten days. the bus you're seeing here was apparently targeted. >> heard a loud bang. it startled me. >> that's terrorism. they're trying to frighten or kill somebody. >> the good news, no one has been seriously hurt, but officials say it could be just a matter of time. the former south carolina police officer who shot and killed an unarmed black man may get out of jail today. michael slager's attorney says fbi-enhanced video shows a violent scuffle between the officer and walter scott. he added that scott had traces of cocaine and alcohol in his system. but scott's family and local

leaders point out in this video he was at least 15 feet away when the first shot was fired. they're calling on the community to show up at today's hearing. and we now know that the suburban chicago police lieutenant killed last week died of a single gunshot wound. the coroner conducting the autopsy on joe gliniewicz did not say where the 52-year-old was shot. the death has not yet been classified as a homicide and details about how gliniewicz was killed are being kept under wraps right now. investigators are checking for a match on dna found at the scene that did not belong to gliniewicz. vice president joe biden says the u.s. plans to meet with israeli leaders to discuss how israel can maintain its military advantage in the middle east. this as they're growing concern among american jews over the iran nuclear deal. that deal also the focal point of demonstrations in washington yesterday. here's abc news's karen travers. >> reporter: an unusual sight on capitol hill. two republican presidential rivals sharing the same is

wrong guy. tom brady leads the new england patriots in tonight's nfl season opener against the pittsburgh steelers. the team will unveil its new super bowl banner just before kickoff. those are some of our top stories on this thursday, september 10th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." >> good morning, everyone. we begin it half hour with protests against the nuclear deal with iran. donald trump and ted cruz among those speaking against it. >> barring something absolutely extraordinary, the deal it already done. here's abs's jonathan karl. >> reporter: mr. trump goes to washington, hitting capitol hill to rally against the iran nuclear deal. >> never, ever, ever in my life have i seen any transaction so incompetently negotiated as our deal with iran. >> reporter: light on specifics as usual, but as usual, heavy on

bravado. >> we'll have so much winning if i get elected, you may get bored with winning. >> reporter: while most of trump's gop rivals have been attacking him, ted cruz, who invited trump to the rally, quite literally embraced him. >> why was donald trump here? >> it's not complicated. number one, i like donald. but, number two, everywhere donald goes, he brings 100 television cameras. >> reporter: while trump and cruz hammered the deal and sarah palin, too, across town, hillary clinton praised it, vowing to take the toughest of tough lines if iran violates the deal. >> i will not hesitate to take military action if iran attempts to obtain a nuclear weapon. >> reporter: big speech by hillary clinton and she was talking tough on iran. >> she's trying to get the focus off her because she's a disaster. honestly, jonathan, if she doesn't, she's in big trouble. >> reporter: the debate on iran deal is formerly under way here in congress, but for all the

loud objections from republicans and some democrats, the bottom line is opponents of this deal simply don't have the votes needed to block it. jonathan karl, abc news, capitol hill. the pentagon has released new images of air strikes against isis, showing them hit a stadium near a site, reported to be a key command and hub where islamic forces store explosive and weapons. the defense department says the international coalition conducted thesis air strikes in coordination with iraqi ground forces. the islamic state claims to be holding a norwegian man and chinese consultant hostage and demanding ransom. the group posted pictures online showing the two men wearing yellow prison outfits. they also listed a telegram number for anyone who wants to pay for their release. >> the coast guard has intercepted another boat full of

migrants believed to be from cuba. they say they've been at sea for ten days. despite improving relations with cuba, nearly 4,000 cue bans have been caught trying to my great to the u.s. in the last year, surpassing last year's total. now to the growing humanitarian crisis on the other side of the world. refugees fleeing war in the middle east and risking their lives to get to europe as countries struggle to find a solution. hungary is being accused of mistreatment this morning. abc's alex marquardt is there. >> reporter: hundreds of re gees pouring over this fence. a woman slipping her child underneath. the growing flood of people determined to get through this gateway to europe. but hungary is cracking down, reinforcing this new razor wire fence more than 100 miles long and planning to add guards. that journey toward the horizon now increasingly tense. mona and her children have been on the road for a month now. now you're worried the hungarian police are going to stop you? >> yes.

>> reporter: and hit you? >> yes. >> reporter: and moments later, a confrontation. the refugees trying to barrel through a line of police. >> no, sorry. >> reporter: then herded to the side of the road. this little girl in tears, pleading with the officers who are trying to take them to a refugee camp. most here want to go to germany, which has welcomed the refugees with cheers. a stark contrast with the hostility here in hungary. that video shocking the world, the hungarian camerawoman kicking that girl as she runs from police, and this man as he runs by carrying a small child, she trips him. that camera who works for a right wing tv channel has been fired. hungary accused of aggression toward the refugees and a lack of empathy in this crisis. a one man aboard recorded the takeoff and the explosion that

sent up fire and thick, black smoke. passengers and crew fled down the emergency chutes and away from the burning aircraft. the fire ate right through the fuselage and destroyed part of the cargo area before it was put out. a terrifying scene in southern california. a school bus packed with school children burst into flames. it was carrying a high school water polo team when fire broke out on the freeway in irvine. the driver was able to pull over and evacuate everyone. thankfully, no one was hurt. in the meantime, police in phoenix are on the lookout for a possible serial shooter on busy roadways. there have been ten suspicious incidents in the past 11 days. investigators are calling it domestic terrorism. >> reporter: drivers in phoenix, arizona, under siege. two more incidents, not saying if it was a bullet or some other projectile that hit the back side of this white pickup truck. >> doesn't matter if it's coming dpr a handgun, rifle, or pellet

gun, all of those are projectile. >> reporter: the fbi and atf joining the investigation, and the reward raised to $20,000 for any information leading to an arrest. >> these are bad people trying to do harm to good people. >> reporter: the shootings started august 29th. 13-year-old girl injured after the window of the car she was riding in, shattered. this tour bus also hit. the driver, the only one on board. >> the person almost took me away from my family. >> reporter: and on tuesday, the window of a vehicle driven by a police sergeant, also breaking. with no pattern of time or days of the week, people in the phoenix area seeking refuge from a highway they use every day. abc news. >> thank you. the head of philadelphia's fire department is promising action against a paramedic caught using his phone behind the wheel. this video was shot by a mother whose son was being taken to a hospital. she claims a driver of the ambulance never put down his

phone during the whole trip. philly's fire commissioner says the driver will be spldisciplin four workers from new jersey were hurt when an old terminal partially collapsed on them at newark. it hadn't been used for years. it was in the process of being demolish demolished. two victims are suffering serious injuries. day number two of the teachers strike in seattle. picket lines were up yesterday and classrooms were empty. the teachers say their salaries have not kept up with seattle's booming high-tech economy. they've gone six years without a cost of living increase. another round of negotiations set for today. those of us on the night shift, here's a stark new assessment about sleep deprivation this morning. british expert is now calling it torture. did you hear this, kendis? torture. he's calling for work and school to get started later in the morning. he says early schedules go against the body's natural clock. where were you, researcher, when i was in school?

>> good morning, everybody. we've made it to friday eve. >> we have. i'm reena ninan with kendis gibson joining us. >> absolutely. we were paying attention to all the developments with apple yesterday. and you know, it sounded like a big thud. we'll get into the details. >> you think so? you're not -- >> the reviews were not all that great. >> all right. we're going to get started this half hour with the string of shootings that put drivers on a phoenix highway on edge. >> after ten shootings along a busy freeway and another incident yesterday, police are asking commuters to look for anything or anyone suspicious. here's abc's brandi hitt. >> reporter: phoenix is a city on edge. the driver of this white pickup truck the latest hit with a projectile on interstate 10. his back right window shattered. officials are now investigating this case along with ten other incidents just in the last 11 days. >> that's terrorism. they're trying to frighten or kill somebody. >> reporter: authorities say the shooting spree started august

29th along this short eight-mile span of i-10, the major thoroughfare through phoenix, arizona. on tuesday this offduty police sergeant's window was truck. before that, a bullet went through this windshield injuring a 13-year-old girl and this tour bus was also targeted. >> i heard a loud bang. it startled me. >> reporter: a bullet hit a seat narrowly missing the bus driver, who luckily was the only one on board. >> the person almost took me away from my family. >> i don't know if this is a copycat crime, fitz multiple people. there is no pattern for time. it's been different days of the week, different hours of the day. >> reporter: luckily no one has been seriously hurt or killed in these shootings. the fbi has joined the investigation. reena and kendis. >> brandi hitt reporting from los angeles for us. thank you. a bond hearing scheduled today for the former south carolina police officer caught on camera fatally shooting an unarmed black man in the back as he ran away.

michael slatter's attorney claims he feared for his life. he said the fbi enhanced video showing an aggressive scuffle between them, adding that scott had traces of cocaine and alcohol in his system. local civil rights leaders point out scott was at least 15 feet away when the first shot was fired and they're calling on the community to show up at today's hearing. >> it's a sad day when they even think about letting mr. slager out on bond. >> police in the area have been briefed and are prepared to protect slager if he is released. they're also bracing for protests over the death of freddie gray, a day after officials approved a $6.4 million settlement for gray's family. a judge is expected to decide if the trials of the six police officers charged should be moved out of baltimore. gray's death sparked riots and a curfew. defense attorneys say the officers cannot get a fair trial

in baltimore. legal experts believe the settlement could also poison the jury pool. from las vegas, images of that british airway jet that burst into flames from captured inside the plane. a passenger was recording what he thought was a routine takeoff when suddenly there was an explosion. flames and smoke poured out of the engine a few feet from where he was sitting. here's abc's elizabeth hur. >> reporter: disaster averted. >> we're evacuating. >> reporter: with cruise of this british airways plane wasting no time calling for help and evacuating the plane. >> may day. may day. speed bird 2276 request fire services. >> reporter: emergency responders arrived on the scene within minutes transporting 14 passengers to a nearby hospital. >> all you could see was smoke and then all you could see was ash. >> reporter: 157 passengers and 13 crew members were on this

flight in las vegas bound for london's gatwick airport. according to experts, a mechanical failure could have caused the engine to explode, sending hot metal into the plane starting the fire. >> so, the fire you see in those pictures is really the airplane itself, not the engine that's on fire. after they put the fire out, you can see how close it came to penetrating into the cabin. which meant this could have been a very serious, serious accident. >> reporter: the quick-thinking crew now getting credit for saving the day and nearly 200 lives. officials say it could be some time before we learn exactly what happened here, but what they can tell us at this point, had this plane taken off while on fire, the result could have been catastrophic. elizabeth hur, abc news, new york. well, the head of philadelphia's fire department is promising action against a paramedic caught using his phone behind the wheel. the video was shot by a mother whose son was being taken to the hospital.

she claims the driver of the ambulance never put down his phone during the whole trip. philly's fire commissioner says the driver will be disciplined. a florida eye doctor on trial accused of ripping off his patients. prosecutors say the doctor not ed only lied but also performed unneeded surgeries. here's mara schiavocampo. >> reporter: he's the florida eye doctor who could be seeing jailtime. facing 20 counts of medicare fraud. prosecutors saying dr. david ming pon lied to 250 patients to treat falsely diagnosed retinal diseases with laser treatments that were neither medically necessary nor rendered, bringing in $7 million of medicare payments. >> it was unnecessary. >> reporter: patients like 93-year-old world war ii veteran james allen. >> is this greedy? i think he should go to jail. >> reporter: it's not the first time we've seen a doctor intentionally misdiagnose patients.

this summer a mitch doctor was sentenced to 45 years in prison after pleading guilty to falsely diagnoses 550 patients with cancer. not only charging but also recommending unnecessary and potentially harmful treatment. officials say dr. pon's treatments did not harm his patients. now that trial getting under way. his lawyers saying he didn't break the law or defraud medicare. mara schiavocampo, abc news, new york. in political theater in washington over the iran nuclear deal. opponents against it up outside the capitol even as they face most certain defeat on the issue in congress. president obama has enough votes to head off a blockage of the accord. among those speaking donald trump and ted cruz. >> also from washington, a former i.t. staffer for hillary clinton is expected to take the fifth today before a congressional committee looking into the attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi. brian pagliano reportedly rejected two offers. the state department has failed

to turn over nearly 70 pages of hillary clinton's e-mail documents as instructed by a the federal judge to the associated press. at least one official in texas says the takedown of a football referee should result in their entire team being suspended. the governor body of texas high school sports is questioning whether the team's coaches should have done more to calm emotion during a tense game. there were punches thrown, late hits and ejections before the incident. james blake demanding an apology this morning from the new york police department over an apparent case of mistaken identity. blake says he was thrown to the ground, handcuffed and detained by five officers outside a hotel yesterday for up to 15 minutes. police had mistaken him for a suspect in a cell phone purchasing scam. once he was identified and found to have nothing to do with the case, blake was released. >> it shouldn't have happened. it's something that we'll deal with with the police and we'll

>> reporter: even as flight attendants try to calm panicking passengers. and then the panicked exodus out of that crippled plane. just minutes earlier on tuesday, flight 2276 to london taxis for takeoff. 170 passengers and crew on board. just seconds before it goes airborne, the plane slamming to a halt, swallowed in flames and smoke. eyewitnesses say one of the pilots walks out of the cockpit to see for himself. >> he just was like, evacuate! everybody evacuate now. >> we are evacuating on the runway. we have a fire. i repeat, we are evacuating. >> reporter: just two minutes after the call, fire crews arrive, blasting water onto the plane. passengers flopping onto emergency chutes. you can see them scampering down the runway. >> is everybody okay? >> reporter: sally dewhurst says she was the first one down the emergency slide. >> it was almost like a river of fire coming at the ramps. >> reporter: 27 people treated for minor injuries, including the pilots, hailed as heroes tonight.

>> everybody's good. thank you. >> reporter: these images show that molten pieces of engine shot towards the fuselage. >> if the fire trucks hadn't been there, if the fire had been able to build and gotten near the fuel tanks where people couldn't have gotten out and maybe had come through the cabin wall, this could have been very serious. >> reporter: aviation experts telling us had the pilots noticed the fire a couple of seconds later, they may not have been able to abort the takeoff meaning they would have had to have lifted off with the wing on fire, a very different outcome. matt gutman, abc news, las vegas. we move now to california where a first date turned to tragedy in the mountains east of los angeles a powerful rainstorm triggered flash flooding and trapped a young couple hiking the trails. they held hands trying to cross out of the runoff. two sheriff's deputies heard the woman calling for help and rescued her. but her companion was swept away. searchers found his body several hours later. a fast and furious rainstorm set off flash flooding in parts of new york city, swamping this

neighborhood on staten island. streets turned to rivers trapping drivers in their cars. neighbors blame poor drainage in the area. and with heavy rain in the forecast today, this could all happen yet again. this morning's commute could be tense for thousands on the roadways around phoenix. police investigating a possible serial shooter after ten suspicious incidents in the past ten days. the bus you're seeing here was apparently targeted. >> heard a loud bang. it startled me. >> that's terrorism. they're trying to frighten or kill somebody. >> the good news, no one has been seriously hurt, but officials say it could be just a matter of time. the former south carolina police officer who shot and killed an unarmed black man may get out of jail today. michael slager's attorney says fbi-enhanced video shows a violent scuffle between the officer and walter scott. he added that scott had traces of cocaine and alcohol in his system. but scott's family and local

leaders point out in this video he was at least 15 feet away when the first shot was fired. they're calling on the community to show up at today's hearing. and we now know that the suburban chicago police lieutenant killed last week died of a single gunshot wound. the coroner conducting the autopsy on joe gliniewicz did not say where the 52-year-old was shot. the death has not yet been classified as a homicide and details about how gliniewicz was killed are being kept under wraps right now. investigators are checking for a match on dna found at the scene that did not belong to gliniewicz. vice president joe biden says the u.s. plans to meet with israeli leaders to discuss how israel can maintain its military advantage in the middle east. this as they're growing concern among american jews over the iran nuclear deal. that deal also the focal point of demonstrations in washington yesterday. here's abc news's karen travers. >> reporter: an unusual sight on capitol hill. two republican presidential rivals sharing the same is

stage, rallying against the iran nuclear agreement. front-runner donald trump. >> i've been doing deals for a long time. that's what i do. never ever, ever in my life have i seen any transaction so incompetently negotiated as our deal with iran. >> reporter: the businessman was invited by his fellow presidential contender senator ted cruz. >> this iranian nuclear deal is catastrophic. >> reporter: inside the capitol, lawmakers began debating the deal. >> this is probably the biggest foreign policy issue we're going to deal with during our time here in the united states senate. >> reporter: but all that fiery rhetoric may be a waste of time. enough senate democrats have come out in support of the nuclear agreement to block the republican-backed disapproval measure, a big win for the white house. hillary clinton said she supports the agreement as part of a broader strategy for iran. >> is it perfect? well, of course, not.

no agreement like this ever is. but is it a strong agreement? yes, it is. and we absolutely should not turn it down. >> reporter: but she stressed if elected president, to protect the u.s., military action would be an option. congress has until september 17th to vote on the agreement, but kendis and reena, the drama is essentially over. >> our thanks to karen now. turning to the pope's upcoming visit to the u.s. an openly gay catholic man from virginia has been personally invited by the white house to see pope francis. aaron ledesma writes a blog called the gay catholic. he wrote a letter to the white house website and was surprised to get a phone call. if he gets a chance to talk to the pope, he knows exactly what he's going to say. >> i would tell the holy father how much it means to see someone say, you are loved, you are supported. it's a misconception. you can absolutely be catholic and be gay.

>> many americans are clamoring to see the pope. in philadelphia, for example, 10,000 tickets to taepd the pope's mass along the city's franklin parkway were claimed in just 30 seconds. >> wow, incredible. >> exciting. >> i was surprised to learn they're reading the letters from the white house website. so the they pay attention. >> they react. >> got something, better write in. >> send your grievances to the white house website. >> not to us, please. the nationwide salmonella outbreak linked to cucumbers has unfortunately claimed another life. a texas woman is the second victim. public health investigators found several strains of salmonella grown in mexico and distributed by a california company. so far more than 340 cases. the outbreak reported in 30 states. chain restaurants here in new york city will soon post warnings about salt. the board of health unanimously passed the first in the nation order, the warning must be posted along any menu item that contains more than the recommended daily amount of salt.
