abc 7 news starts right now with live breaking news. >> devastating wild fire rages out of control this morning. in lake county thousands are spending a second night away from their homes. when they return some will find nothing but ashes. good morning, everyone. >> i'm kristin zee. we're coming on early this morning to bring you the very latest on the massive valley fire. this morning cal fire is investigating reports one fatality related to the fire. >> that fire is now at 50,000 acres. it is not contained at all. 0% and it's spread into three counties. middletown and hidden valley lake are among the hardest hit communities. at least 400 homes have been destroyed and many more are threatened.

mandatory evacuation orders. several evacuation centers are open. many schools are also closed for the day. >> amy who wiimy hollingfield i >> reporter: our jaws dropped at all of the devastation. look at what used to be someone's garage. you can see the truck still parked inside. now no walls exist here. look at next door to the garage, clearly where a home once stood, now just a footprint. you see this all throughout the blocks here. we are located right now at jefferson and young. we only know that because we had to look at our gps. we weren't able to read the street sign to see where we are it is so charred. it is still smokey here. the fire clearly still raging out of control. here's video of the fires

burning. it is being called a beast. they saw it but they figured they were fine. it felt like it was off in the distance. then they quickly realized they were not fine. they had to run out of here. they couldn't grab anything. the california department of forestry is now saying one person has died in this fire. 400 homes detroit. 2 apartment complexes, ten businesses. people who lost their homes say watching the fire approach was terrifying. >> it was a wall of fire behind us when we left. scariest thing ever. i'm still in shock. >> reporter: firefighters say when the fire was really racing through the neighborhood they were in life saving mode not fire saving mode. they were helping people and trying to protect property at this point. they have zero containment on the fire and it has burned 50,000 acres. reporting live in middletown, amy holyfield, abc 7 news. >> time is 4:02.

yes, we are on a bit early this morning because of those fires raging up there in lake napa county areas and the towns that have been devastated. >> hopefully the weather will be more conducive in this coming week for firefighters. let's hear about that. >> reporter: hi, kristin and eric. we are looking at mist and drizzle and clouds. cooler temperatures with a couple opportunities for rain. the atmosphere hazy and smokey. the temperature 66 degrees. 50% relative humidity. the winds are calm. they will be out of the west as that on shore flow rampsed up today. that will allow for the humidity to come up and hopefully for things to get a little bit more under control. we're looking at a chance of showers later on today up in the north bay. it will be dry tomorrow and then another opportunity for rain on wednesday. detailed look at our own forecast coming up. sue has a look at the traffic. good morning. >> we'll get to the roads closures up in lake county and napa county in a bit.

we have a fog advisory on the golden gate bridge. there is a lot of construction going on there. we'll take a look at that as well. otherwise, road work out there until 5:30 this morning. 880 mer reena both directions. kristen, eric. 4:04 mp here. here's a look at how fast the fire has grown. now this is the very latest cal fire map estimating the burn area this morning. you can see how it now stretches into middletown and further south past the lake and reservoir areas. to the southeast the fire moved into hidden valley lake. >> a list of mandatory evacuations have grown. it includes napa county. in lake county lower lake as well as bucs canyon road. the communities of cobb, siegla canyon, middletown and hidden valley lake.

advisory evacuations are for areas in hillsberg including guyser road. you can see the specific streets included in the evacuation order throughout the morning at the bottom of your tv screen. >> hundreds of people chased out of their homes are spending the night at an evacuation center in calistoga. that's where janet oh is with their story, janet? >> reporter: eric, a lot of people here who are set up in the tents behind us are from middletown, one of the hardest hit areas. a lot of people in disbelief how fast that fire moved and forced them out of their homes. because the fire was moving so fast they had very little time to grab much of their personal items. one woman describes only being able to rescue her dog and family photo albums. they weren't able to load their animals out of the trailers. now local animal rescue organizations have been looking

for strays and have set up an area here at the evacuation center for owners to reunite with their animals. they described their scary experience trying to make it to safety. >> it's like a wall of fire coming straight at us. it was leaping, big leaping flames. >> our neighbors all trying to get out. there was a line of cars. 300 cars trying to get out. there was no escape. there was one way out. people walking up and down the road saying get out now. >> reporter: 17,000 people in all have been evacuated. everything is on hold for them. many are wondering, of course, if they still have a house to go back to. fire crews are now saying it will be at least two to three days before they can head back. meantime, red cross is asking for monetary donations to continue to help all those people out here in need. janet oh, abc 7 news. >> janet, thanks. many evacuees had to leave

behind pets and livestock. they've been frantically trying to find out how they are. they will head into the evacuated areas to help local agencies already on the scene. they hope to move the animals out of the danger zone. well, the fire has caused major power outages as well. pg&e said 5800 customers are without power this morning. many under mandatory evacuation orders. they have a command post set up north of middletown. hopefully, they say, they'll restore power by today or tomorrow. >> donations pouring in to shelters across napa. if you like to help, financial donations are needed the most. if you want to donate $10 right away text the word red cross to 90999. we have details on our website, abc 7 news.com.

so many of you out of the fire area are w57bding to help those in the fire zone. >> a new website has been set up to get your donations into the hands of those who need them. it's called love lake county.org. easy to use. you see it on your screen. you select what you'd like to donate. for example, blankets. jump over to the right and hit apply it shows you all of the agencies that are accepting blankets. whether it's a government agency, business, nonprofit, so on. the location as well. we have a link on our website abc 7 news.com with the rest of the donation information. in the meantime, lisa, you were talking about how some weather -- cooling weather, maybe a little drizzle could help the firefighters? >> yeah, absolutely. we have plenty of opportunity. mist and drizzle. temperatures as much as 10 degrees cooler up in the north bay. we've got the cloud cover. on shore flow is increasing. a couple returns from live doppler 7 hd. a chance of rain will increase

in the north bay throughout the midday hours. with the clouds, that's good news. temperatures in the 60s. relative humidity coming up. the winds should be on the lighter side. they're coming from the right direction. 60 fremont, san jose, san francisco. we are looking at temperatures this morning cooler for everyone. about 8 degrees cooler out by the delta. 3 degrees cooler mountain view and san jose. morning hours, everyone is cloudy. 10:00, mist and drizzle continuing. the focus in the north bay and throughout the afternoon, notice, you could see a pop-up shower here or there. really anywhere throughout the day. tomorrow dry. the winds kick up. another bout with cooler air on tuesday. then we're looking at a better chance for rain on wednesday. we'll detail the seven day outlook and tell you about the warmer weather in time for the end of the week, sue. good morning, everyone. let's go back to lake county and napa county for the road closures during the valley fire that we mentioned most of the morning. highway 29 at tubs remains

closed. in the calistoga area. farther north, highway 129 at 175. you can see by the purple sensors. that is all shut down. highway 29, 175 in kelsyville. eastbound and westbound highway 128 at ida klayton road is closed. highway 1289 at 53 or hi-- 29 a closed. if you can avoid to the north, kelsieville not a good place to go. lots of firefighters with tough, tough work. we'll be back with other road closures and road closures. >> 4:10. relief coming at long last for b.a.r.t. customers. the changes being made to ease overcrowded trains. if you have any pictures or

it's now 4:14. more now on the valley fire. so many viewers in the abc 7 now community have shared photos and videos of this fire. alicia on instagram posted this photo of her grandparents' home in middletownment look what remains. all that's left of my childhood is ashes and rebel #heart broken. we do have some other news to get to this morning. a man is recovering after being seriously hurt in a hit-and-run accident last night. he was hit in san francisco near san jose avenue and rice street just before 11:00. police say the man was found unconscious in the street with debris around him likely from the car that hit him. he was rushed to the hospital. his condition is not known at this time. take a look at this incredible surveillance video. two burglars broke into drones plus in santa clara around 1:00. you can see them getting in through a small window in the corner.

the alarm goes off. they hurry and manage to fill several bags of items before slitering out the window, getting in a car and climbing off. drones plus says police are standing outside. b.a.r.t. trains should feel a little less crowded. some big changes taking place today. extra trains will be added to the pittsburgh bay point line during the morning and evening commute. trains will also be up to ten cars long. the middle trains will turn around in pleasant hill to allow for extra trips during the morning and evening commute. they will run nine car trains on the richmond fremont line. all three car trains will be lengthened to four and sky b.a.r.t. will run every six minutes to open airport until 11:00 at night. >> firefighters continue to struggle against the valley fire. let's continue to hope for cooler and wetter weather. >> the weather is cooperating. temperatures down as much as 10 degrees in the north bay.

camera, 59 in the mist and drizzle. concord, 62. 64 in livermore. 24 hours ago we were warmer waking up to cooler, wetter, cloudier conditions. if you go throughout the day today don't be surprised with the cloud cover not clearing having the hazy smokey skies in the north bay. mist and drizzle this morning. slight chance of showers in the afternoon. better chance comes our way on wednesday. the subtropical moisture is in place. with the trough dropping down from the north could trigger a shower. any sort of moisture and cooler temperature certainly welcome. we will be below average the next couple of days as we go through your monday. notice the green popping up. the possibility of a shower tomorrow. tomorrow we are dry and you'll notice that here most of the activity in the sierra nevada. breezy winds. we will be looking at temperatures around the bay in the 70s for you in east bay and south bay. 80 morgan hill. 67 san francisco and the look ahead, another opportunity on wednesday for rain. warmer and dryer throughout the

good morning, it's 4:22 on this monday morning. live picture on the calm in embarcadero in san francisco right now. a cooler day ahead which should help firefighters struggling right now against the valley fire up in three counties. we'll talk more about that in just a moment. that's where firefighters from across the bay area are right now in lake napa and yolo valleys. this is a group of firefighters leaving station 37 in milbury last night. they're among the 1,000 firefighters on the ground. fire crews getting support from 125 fire engines, four air tankers, 15 water tenders and 16 specially equipped dozers. so much appreciation for firefighters in lake county. michael ducette showed this picture using #

outside the moose lake. if you have photos use the hashtag #afc7now. how's the weather going to affect the valley fire? >> we are improving with cooler temperatures, mist and drizzle. better opportunity for rain this afternoon. another opportunity on wednesday. in between, skies will dry and we'll see some very breezy conditions which will not be a good thing. 59 in morgan hill as well as half moon bay. 62 in oakland. temperatures on the cool side. you may run into mist and drizzle. in the afternoon everyone in the 70s, cloud cover and haze. by midday better chance of showers, 70 in oakland, 76 san jose. upper 70s, santa rosa. sue? we have road closures and road work out there. let's take a look at that through the san leandro area.

lake are among the hardest hit communities. governor brown has declared a "state of emergency," and will meet with officials today. at least 400 homes have been destroyed and many more are threatened. mandatory evacuations are in effect and 17,000 have been forced out of their homes and self evacuation centers are open now and many schools are closed for the day. we are in the community of middletown which was especially hard hit. >> we are standing in front of one of 400 homes destroyed with just the foundation standing. the garage and all you see is the burned truck inside and the melted garage door. that is how we were able to figure out this was a garage. here is video of the fire from over the weekend, it is still bumping out of control. it is smoky here
