have a fantastic tuesday, everyone. making news in america this morning, breaking overnight, the death toll rising from flash floods. several others still missing right now. water washing away vehicles in an instant. raging wildfire as people picking up the pieces where homes once stood. firefighters still on the front lines as the blazes burn out of control. plus, a group of people and pets alive after staying submerged in a pool. flight diverted. a pilot with an alarming request at 30,000 feet asking people to restrain an unruly passenger. and a new season of salsa and samba. the season premiere of "dancing with the stars," bindi irwin's charm, paula deen's debut and gary busey.

and we say good tuesday morning to you, everyone. we're going to get started, of course, with that breaking news taking place right now on the utah/arizona border where eight people are dead and five are still missing swept away in a surprise wave of flash flooding. >> emergency officials in the sister towns of hildale and colorado city say a van and an suv carrying 16 women and children were swamped by a wall of water that washed them downstream. three managed to survive. >> the flash flooding was triggered by heavy rains falling in the canyons just north of those two towns. power and water service still out in much of that area. and taking a look at the radar, you can actually see all that rain stretching north of arizona. some of these storms bringing heavy downpours and lightning and we'll stay on top of the situation in the southwest. that same system is bringing cooler, wet weather to northern california, as well. a bit of a break for exhausted firefighters who are battling a deadly wildfire.

>> meanwhile, residents are struggling to deal with the scope of the destruction. at least 700 homes wiped away. more than 60,000 acres burned and the fire just 10% contained. a heartbreaking return for homeowners. >> all i can do is just cry. >> this morning people living in middletown finding scenes like this sifting through the debris and picking up the pieces. >> a lot of my friends and neighbors lost a lot, but we'll get it back. >> at least one person died in the fast-moving fire. overnight authorities releasing new details about 72-year-old barbara mcwilliams, unable to evacuate because of a disability. mcwilliams' caretaker speaking to her before the fire erupted. >> she's like, no, i'm fine, it's going to be fine. she didn't understand the magnitude of it. >> amid the tragedy, amazing stories of survival. when flames tore through one neighborhood, seven people and two dogs jumped into this pool. >> he said, it's going to pass fast. it was probably like about 15

minutes, but it felt like probably over an hour. >> submerged up to their noses the flames shooting over their heads. >> it was hot, and it just came flying right over, right over, and he said it, when it was done, he goes, it's over. >> reporter: and this image going viral this morning. 4-year-old brody wearing his halloween costume praying for the thousands of firefighters still on the front lines. the fire still threatening thousands of homes and several people remain unaccounted for. all right, we turn to our other big story right now because the countdown is on for tomorrow night's gop showdown. the debate at the reagan library in southern california. >> showdown is a good word for it. donald trump set to make another big speech today on a battleship after addressing thousands in dallas. the sold out crowd heard him describe the u.s. as a dumping ground. abc's bazi kanani has details from washington. good morning, bazi. >> reporter: good morning, reena. good morning, kendis. as the republican party launches

a new push to reach latino voters during this hispanic heritage month, the gop's front-runner, according to a new poll, is falling short with those voters. >> all: usa, usa. >> reporter: a roaring rally for the republican front-runner. >> amazing. >> reporter: 20,000 packed a dallas stadium monday cheering on donald trump and his calls for an immigration crackdown. >> we have to build a wall, folks. we are a dumping ground for the rest of the world. we have to end this sanctuary cities crap fast, fast. >> reporter: but outside the stadium, another crowd nearly a thousand deep protested trump's message. >> i'm an immigrant. i'm a marine. i fought for your rights. >> reporter: a new abc news/"washington post" poll shows trump catching up to hillary clinton in a statistical tie in a general election face-off, but another new poll shows less than a fourth of latino voters would choose trump

production plants and is ready to use nuclear weapons against the united states. only yesterday the north said it's ready to launch long-range rockets that are currently banned. its long-range missiles could potentially reach the west coast of the united states. today's announcement may be bluster ahead of the nation's communist party anniversary next month. we turn our focus now to the refugee crisis, the first arrests have been made in hungary following a crackdown. three men believed to be syrian were arrested for illegally crossing from serbia under a wire fence. this comes as european union officials failed to agree on a plan to deal with the crisis and pope francis warned the crisis was just the tip of the iceberg because of economic inequality. breaking overnight, a deadly end to the search for a man wanted for a deadly campus shooting in mississippi. police say shannon lamb suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound last night. lamb was accused of killing delta state university professor ethan schmidt in his office yesterday.

his death put the entire school on lockdown for hours. lamb was also wanted for the death of a woman he shared a home with. investigators now looking for motives in both murders. we are learning some new details about the shooting death of a kentucky state trooper. police say trooper joseph ponder was trying to arrange lodging for occupants of a car when the driver took off at speeds of up to 115 miles an hour. during a second stop a short time later, the driver opened fire on ponder killing him. that driver was later killed by police after a massive manhunt. well, big honors are in store for one of the american heroes who stopped a rampage on a train in france. airman first class spencer stone will be awarded the purple heart. stone was stabbed last month as he and two friends disarmed and hog tied the heavily armed gunman. stone will also receive the airman's medal, the air force's highest noncombat award.

and altered the forms to exclude her name and title. a deputy is taking over. there have been some concern that they won't be valid but the governor insists her. apple says preorders are off to a strong start. the company says those orders are on pace to beat the 10 million units that previous versions of the iphone hit in their first weekend of release. analysts believe that may be because sales in china will be included. the new iphones will begin shipping september 25th. well, big-time james bond fans can prove their love of 007 with a new ultimate ticket to the up many coming bond film. it's being offered by regal entertainment for $100. it entitles holders to see the new movie as often as they want, only 1,000 are being offered through the regal's website. "spectre" is being released november 6th. >> a lot of people looking forward to it.

tesla is getting serious competition in the electric sports car market. take a look at this stunning concept car porsche unveiled at the frankfurt auto show in germany. it got a 600-horsepower engine and goes from 0 to 60 in 3 and a half seconds. unfortunately this beauty won't hit the streets until 2019. but i think some folks can wake. >> 3 1/2 seconds. a car i would not want any of my children driving. >> i wouldn't want you to be driving that either. when we come back, a big rig driver accused of using his truck as a weapon. the wild scene on a busy freeway. and a deadly buzz. sounding the alarm because what children are doing with hand saniti sanitizer. and speaking of airport delays an american airlines flight from miami to chicago diverted to indianapolis after a passenger became bridge rant. >> witnesses say she was screaming and swearing before hitting a passenger. moments later she kissed a flight attendant then punched her in the face. that's when the pilot called for help. >> we need large passengers to restrain another passenger. when i hear large i'm thinking something big is going down. >> the woman was removed from the plane in indianapolis and arrested. she's now facing multiple charges. take a look at this. an apparent case of road rage on a southern california freeway. you can see a trucker using his big rig to repeatedly hit a car from behind pushing it into another tractor trailer. a passenger in another vehicle recording it all on her cell phone. the couple inside not hurt. the trucker claims he didn't see the car. well, after seeing this video police have now re-opened the investigation. >> well, new government

guidelines say low dose aspirin taken daily can prevent heart attacks and strokes. it says aspirin therapy is only for people in their 50s and 60s with a high risk of heart disease an a low risk of bleeding. but as always the panel says doctors should decide what's best for their patients. a warning to parents about a product that children are encouraged to use, more children getting drunk on hand sanitizer. research shows a 400% increase in cases over the last five years among children younger than 12. the alcohol content in hand sanitizers ranks from 45 to 95% sending thousds of kids to the hospital. some without alcohol poisoning. a couple examples for you of animals winding up where they probably shouldn't be starting in colorado springs where employees at this pizza shop found a small bear in the back room. it had fallen asleep among the boxes so police tranquilized it and carried it out.

bears getting ready for hibernating season and eating just about anything. apparently including whatever it found there at lou which's pizza. this guy from nebraska. a deer crashing through a hotel window. next we see the deer checking in in the lobby walking right past a guest and hotel worker. it took a quick trip to the laundry room even then was seen running down a hallway. eventually it was trapped in a room and authorities were able to get it back outside. the animal was not injured. just a hotel guest was scared. week one of the nfl is in the books. that means you can start preparing for your fantasy team for week two. >> yes, as for last night's action highlights now from the fellas at espn. good morning. he's stan, i'm neil. manhunt night football back. two games for you. >> let's get started with the eagles and falcons. sam bradford, came down to this.

mention and a shot of the golden gate bridge with windshield wipers, as well, coming off the waldo grade and slick roads. traffic is light on the golden gate bridge and we will take a quick look at road closures, southbound 101 san rafael to lincoln to the 580 split and that is in the lanes until 5:00 and the richmond-san rafael eastbound down to one lane. kristen and eric? >> thank you, it is 4:29. we have the latest on the valley fire. >> it has grown to 62,000 acres and 10 percent contained close to the same size it was at this time yesterday. one opinion has been killed in the fire and four firefighters are injured. several people remain missing. 585 homes have been destroyed. 9,000 structures are still threatened. several highway and school closures are in affect and you can see the list at bottom of the screen and online at abc7news.com. >> some residents of middletown checked on their homes and what they found was grim. amy hollyfield is in middletown.

amy? >> victims are starting to process this has happened and realize they have to start thinking about recovery. when you look at a john like this, one of the damned homes is heartbreaking you think of family who lived here, the stories and realize that there are 585 homes, 585 stories like this. it is so sad to think about. they still have 9,000 structures that are threatened. people are being kept away. some of the home were destroyed, they are gone, and the homeowners were allowed to come back. a lot of them knew what they were about to see it was tough to take it all in. all i can do is cry. just cry. i don't know...a lost
