>> new video from an abc7 news viewer shows the wildfire in lake county that has charred thousands of acres and destroyed hundreds of homes and forced countless people to evacuate. despite the disaster there are signs of progress. thank you for joining us. i'm ama daetz. >> i'm dan ashley. sky 7hd flew to lake county to get a good look at where they believe the fire started on saturday. crews are focusing on this shed off high valley road in the community of cobb. >> the fire is under investigation and it is still out of control. 67,200 acres are burning and 585 homes have been destroyed. >> as we said signs of progress. >> but there is containment and some schools are reopening in the morning. >> let's start with lilian kim who is live in middletown. >> it is difficult to process the word progress amid this destruction. but slowly and surely

firefighters are gaining the upper hand. crews spent the evening setting backfires on cobb mountain. the cold temperatures made it possible for firefighters to conduct these controlled burns. >> just down the way investigators went to the property on high valley road where they believe the valley fire may have started. they paid close attention to this shed where flames burned fast at the hill behind it on saturday afternoon. >> i have already changed twice today. i am all scraped up from climbing through the creek. >> he was among the thousands who left his home and he bypassed the police blockades despite the evacuation orders. he lost a few out buildings and a couple of rental eke haves. >> it is not so bad. it is not so bad. i can see some of the good. there can be way worse. there are four of us. we are still healthy. >> a different outcome for so

authorities could not take everyone so they will offer more escorts. crasses will resume at -- classes will resume at upper lake union elementary district and lake union high school and lucern elementary schools. others will stay closed through tomorrow. we have the list on our website. the smoke cleared to get a better look at the damage. here is the view from sky 7hd. >> it looks like winter, but instead of snow there are banks of ash lining the streets. debris is all that is left for the homes in this neighborhood. feet away from the destruction you can see homes virtually untouched. here is where a resort sat for 130 years. now an outline of ash and ruins are all that's left. with so much damage it is hard to believe there was only one

person killed. the retired school teacher died in the fire. hundreds of people are taking shelter at the fairgrounds and many don't know if their homes are standing. less than 17 hours after the fire was started it grew to 47 acres. cal fire said it spread so fast their first effort was to save lives. now that people are out of the danger zone they can focus on the flames. a cat rescued from the fire is a social media star and he looks rough you will be happy to foe he will be okay. al len wong will bring -- alan wang will bring you the remarkable survival story of this cat in 10 minutes. now abc7 news is partnering with the red cross to support wildfire victims. make a $10 donation text the word "red cross" to 90999. if you would rather call, we have a live phone bank set up

girl. he is white and 40 years old and 5-10 with a muscular build with short blonde hair. he pulled up to the teenager in a white mini-van with tinted windows and asked her to get in. when she refused he grabbed her wrist and tried to pull her in. thankfully she got away. also new at 11:00, the napa valley wine train sold for millions despite a widely publicized racial incident. they bought it for between $10 million and $50 million. all 150 employees will keep their jobs. the wine train may face a lawsuit after kicking a group of black women off the train last month. we have new details on hewlett-packard's plan to cut 30,000 jobs. katie talked to a former employee who has a grim prediction on the tech company's future. >> it is sad to see an icon

like hp go into a death spiral. >> it is sad for jim mccliewr who used to work at hp in the 70s. >> you feel nervous. you hope the change is a good change and it is happening for the right reasons. >> they have announced 25,000 to 30,000 employees will lose their jobs and that's on top of the 55,000 layoffs as part of hp's plan to split into two separate companies in november. hp ept -- hp enterprise will handle the data analysis and hp ink ink covering computers. >> you typically don't do this unless you plan on selling the company. >> they say it is a bad sign for hp. >> it is bad for hp who has found it impossible to find a ceo that they can get to turn the company around. >> they say the move will enable a more competitive and sustainable cost structure. >> eventually they can make profitable separate companies

police are trying to track down the people involved in this fight outside levi stadium. 49er fans got into it with a vikings fan. it started when two fans started talking trash. security eventually broke up the fight. >> now to a story that received thousands of likes on our abc7 news facebook page. it was about a cat that was badly burned in the valley fire. although his injuries are severe he is expected to be okay. alan wang has the story. we do want to warn you though that the individual yoy is graphic. cash dash -- dash the video is graphic. >> when chris holmes saw the badly burned cat he considered euthanizing him. >> he can't eat because his lips and mouth are so swollen that at first he couldn't open his mouth. >> after inserting a feeding tube, the cat showed signs of hope. dr. holmes said mr. burns is a friendly neutered cat who is

obviously someone's pet. he is unable to see, the tips of his ears melted. >> there is antibiotic ointment, and it is hard to tell there are eyes in there. his nose is pretty plugged up. we are finally able to kind of open his mouth. >> the cat was found in the driveway in front of this home. there is no telling what he went through, but he was left behind in the chaos of the evacuation. >> there are 65 healthy dogs. they are trying to find their owners. they expect to receive more injured or lost -- to receive more injured or lost pets, but they are trying to find the owner of mr. burns. >> what a story. we want to thank all of our abc7 knew community for all of the photos.

if you have pictures or video where you live share it with # abc7 now. >> tonight twitter is being sued . a texas man accuses the on-line social network of intercepting and reading and altering direct messages. twitter has a longstanding practice of redirecting in message links to benefit the advertising business. they call the allegation meritless. >> caitlyn jenner is now making it legal. she filed paperwork in lange range to legally change her name name -- in los angeles to legally change her name and gender. it will not become official for another eight months to year. supply donald trump got some cheers and jeers today while stumping from the uss iowa.

>> we have illegal immigrants that are treated better by far than our veterans. it is not going to happen anymore. protestors and supporters showed up at the event. they announced they are endorsing the real estate mogul. the gop debate will be at the reagan library in see simi valley. now to a changing weather forecast. >> it has made a difference. sandhya paw you tell is here with the late -- sandhya patel is here with the latest. >> we have the crispness in the air you expect to see in the fall and we have the cloud cover and live doppler 7hd will show you what is happening. higher elevations are picking up snow. it has been raining in the south lake tahoe area. as we head toward tomorrow the snow level will go from 7500 to about 8500 feet in the sierra nevada. we could see more mixed precipitation. temperatures right now in the

mid50s to the low 60s. as you look at this live camera, we are looking at areas of rain. showers linger on thursday morning and it is going to be warmer on friday through the weekend. do expect big changes. the system came through and brought a few sprinkles to the valley fire area. this cold front will bring us the wet weather. it is approaching and i do want to show you a time line. tomorrow morning when you get going it will just be cloud cover. as we head toward 10:00 a.m., ukiah, cloverdale gets the rain. the rain starts to shift into the area of the valley fire, and that's exactly what those firefighters need. the north bay is getting wet by 2:00 p.m. and the rain doesn't shift very much until about 6:00. at 5:00 p.m. during the start of the rush hour it is still up to the north. and then it finally starts to shift down toward the south bay -- i mean the peninsula and san francisco and out toward the east bay. the cold front will fall apart, but there are a few

lingering showers on thursday morning. so do make sure you have your umbrella handy. you will still need the shades, but as the day goes on the rain will come in. north bay expecting a 10th to half an inch. most other areas a trace to 10th of an inch. some parts of the south bay and the monterey bay will not get a whole lot. they are starting off on the cool side. you will notice a difference. you will need to bundle up. the kids will need a jacket or sweatshirt as they get going to school. and then for the afternoon most areas will see the cloud cover. north bay will see the rain. slick roadways and you need to take it easy. mid60s to mid70s. just in case you are going to the game tomorrow, giants and reds at at&t park, you will need a porch choe and jack -- a poncho and a jacket. it is dropping to 59. it will be breezy and wet for that game. a look at the accu-weather seven-day forecast.

you will see the scattered showers for your wednesday. a few early morning lingering showers on thursday and primarily in the south bay and the santa cruz mountains. and then we'll start to see a major change in the weather pattern. warmer, sunnier on friday. it takes us into the weekend. low to mid70s coast side for your weekend plans and midto upper 90s inland. even though it is still summer and we do get the heat, we are getting ready for rain tomorrow which of course is wonderful news for the firefighters. >> it certainly is. still ahead here on abc7 news, a close encounter of the whale kind. >> check that out. the scare for some could aha! oof!
