broadcast center, this is abc7 news. >> developing news now at 11:00. a massive earthquake 6,000 miles away from california has triggered a tsunami advisory along the state's coastline. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm ama daetz. chile's president said at least five people died in the 8.3 earthquake. it hit off the coast. >> now we are getting new images of damaged homes and lots of debris and the ceilings have collapsed. the strong aftershocks have hit, the strongest so far is 7.0 which is a sizable earthquake. inside stores is a lot of broken glass after things fell off the shelves. they are told to evacuate the coastal areas. the streets are flooded as the cars are trying to get out. >> the quake has triggered a tsunami advisory from southern california to the central coast. this is a look at huntington beach in orange county.

strong waves could hit in a few hours. >> now for the latest on the sue pho me advisory we president -- on the tsunami advisory, let's check in with sandhya patel. >> let's take a look at the earthquake and just how powerful the waves that have been generated all the way from the chile coast owl toward the pacific. it is across the pacific and in a northwesterly fashion. that's where the strongest energy has gone. this is what is prompting the tsunami varies re. they are not expecting a major tsunami or major waves. it is certainly possible that a series of dangerous waves many hours after the arrival time may actually occur. the first may not be the largest which is why there is concern. the tsunami advisory is not for the bay area, but for raged point to san san onofre state beach. it arrives at 4:46 a.m. the best advice is get off the beaches and out of the harbors and the marinas. in santa cruz we are expected

to find the first in the morning. estimated height is .4 feet. the last tsunami that hit was march 11 of 2011. live doppler 7hd is tracking left over clouds near the valley fire zone where the temperature is cool and the humidity remains up and the winds are not as gusty. the rainfall in the fire zone has been helpful to the firefighters. anywhere from .091 -- to .001 of an inch. i will let you know if the wet weather will stick around for your morning commute. dan and ama? >> thank you, sandhya. >> as sandhya mentioned, waves are expected to arrive in santa cruz early tomorrow morning. >> let's check in with alan wang who is there live. >> hi, ama and dan. it is cold out here now. people in the santa cruz harbor are aware of the

tsunami advisory that went out earlier today. the advisory only goes as far as san luis obispo where they could see a surge as high as three feet. we can see the surge rise half a foot which doesn't seem like much, but the boat owners know that just a small surge can cause serious damage. it can slam you against the dock. if it was strong it can break a line. it can slam you into another boat i guess. now back in march of 20011 a sue gnaw -- tsunami traveled and rocked the santa cruz harbor. that series of surges caused about $14 million. if we see if i affects of the earthquake it will happen around 5:00 a.m. reporting live from the santa cruz harbor, i'm alan wang, abc7 fuse. >> alan, thanks.

mountain after the valley fire moved through. the history of the place, been here since 1885. it was a historical landmark that can never be replaced. >> a chimney is all that's left of the big ballroom where big bands played in the 30s and 40s. the resort employed up to 100 people. >> they had so many terrific memories. >> a soaking rain was a welcome sight to the firefighters. mother nature is cutting them a break. >> the weather has actually helped us significantly to be able to assist the firefighters in gaining additional containment. >> but hot summer weather returns this weekend which could spell trouble. >> we are still not out of the woods. >> evacuees were taking the rain in stride. grace bowman shows us the new donated blanket she will get to her granddaughter. she lost her home and is now looking toward the future. >> you think you lose your

and all of the bay area, this is abc7 news. >> let's go back to the valley fire for a few moments. hundreds of people affected by the flames are still staying in shelters and they will booy for some time. and they will be for some time. they explain that volunteers are doing their best to make at least one shelter in clear lake oaks feel a little more like home. >> the moose lodge in clear lake oaks is a tent city. nearly everyone here has lost their home or had to leave it. >> i just see it as a fresh start. >> he says most of the clothing he is wearing was

donated. there are so many donations that they have over flowed to a back parking lot. he donated food for for00 -- for 400 people. >> we have salads and pastas. >> in addition to clothing and food donations there are a number of volunteers including nurses and a chiropractor and even an ago few puncturist. >> this right now is putting smiles on my face and started to relax me a little bit. >> some came here for a warm meal and company. >> i feel fortunate, but when i left i was ready to lose my home. i could sense the voraciousness of the fire. >> hopefully we will be back soon as soon as they restore power and the roads are open. >> the postal workers will bring the mail to shelters like the moose lodge. >> we ban together for

anything that happens and especially for something like this. >> it is all about making the possibly now without a home feel at home. and forget their troubles. even if it is just for a few moments. in clear lake oaks, abc7 news. >> two people are now confirmed dead in the massive boutte fire. he identified one of them as 60 sick-year-old mark mccloud. the second man has not been identified. in the meantime cal fire is looking into whether a tree may have come into contact with a pg&e power line. they are cooperating fully and so far the fire has burned 233 homes. it is 40% contained. and abc7 is partnering with the red cross to support life saving disaster release for those affected by the western states. that includes the two massive fires in northern california. people have been very generous.

it is still summer. believe it or not there was some high elevation snow in the sierra nevada. it is not falling at lake level. blue canyon has not been getting any snow. as we look at the rainfall totals they are varying from trace amounts like livermore and concord to almost just over an inch and a half at mount saint huh lena to half an inch. .20 in napa. san francisco and oakland .01. san jose zero. so you didn't measure and half moon bay .20 of an inch. often they are missed in the early stages when we are in the middle of late summer and fall for rainfall. the temperatures right now mainly in the 60s. we do have some 50s in the north bay. the cloud cover and the moisture in the air are holding the numbers up. looking toward san francisco the showers will end early in the morning. the heat returns for the upcoming weekend. satellite-radar shows the cold

front coming through and it brought us the wet weather and it helped the firefighters and really this adds a little more moisture. that helps from a fire perspective even if you are in the fourth year of the drought. you can see that when the cold front pushes through. still slick roadways and 5:00 a.m. we are tracking a few drops and the sun breaks through and there will be a few lingering clouds for late morning and early afternoon. look out for the slick spots. dress in layers and you may need the extra layer. it will start in the 50s on the cool side. in the afternoon do break out the shades. you will see the sun. the temperatures will rise warmer than today. 70 in san francisco and 74 in oakland. 79 in santa rosa. inland east bay, 81 concord and 802 livermore. san jose 77. santa cruz 78. accu-weather seven-day forecast, we are going to turn up the heat on friday. it is a little warmer. upper 60s to the upper 80s. the heat comes over the

weekend. mid90s to the low 100's inland. 90s around the bay. 70s at the coastline. it is really beach weather over the weekend. and then the temperatures will come down slightly on monday. you have to wait until tuesday and wednesday to see the 60s to 80s range. for the time being it is great to see the rain. let's hope this repeats all fall and winter long. >> thanks, sandhya.
