and we do say good thursday morning, everyone. i'm kendis gibson. >> and i'm reena ninan. we begin with a marathon debate. donald trump saying it was almost as long as "gone with the wind." >> it was long. >> three hours of bickering, zingers and contentious confrontations as the republican presidential candidates battled for attention and votes. >> it was also entertaining. a field of 11 faced off at the ronald reagan presidential library in southern california last night touching on a range of issues from immigration to iran. >> from the prime spot at center stage, donald trump took direct fire, and he also threw the first punch, but carly fiorina held her own and stole the show. with more, here's abc's bazi kanani. bazi, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, reena. good morning, kendis. as you mentioned, this was a lengthy debate, and even with all of those candidates on the stage, 11 of them, there was still plenty of time to dig into the issues. analysts say that is where

donald trump lost his command. >> first of all, rand paul shouldn't even be on this stage. >> reporter: round two began much like the first feisty debate. >> his visceral response to attack people on their appearance, short, tall, fat, ugly, my goodness, that happened in junior high. [ applause ] >> reporter: but this time the candidates were better prepared to take on the dominant front-runner. donald trump sparring frequently with jeb bush. >> the guy was opposed to casino gambling before, during and after. >> more energy tonight. i like that. >> reporter: a tussle between trump and carly fiorina over alleged business failures when chris christie interjects. >> for the 55-year-old construction worker out in that audience tonight who doesn't have a job, they could care less about your careers. they care about theirs. >> reporter: this morning many analysts are calling the debate a win for the only woman on the stage. twitter stats show the most tweeted about moments of the night were carly fiorina's emotional appeal against abortion and her response to

donald trump's comments in "rolling stone" when he said, "look at that face, would anyone vote for that?" >> i think women all over the country heard clearly what mr. trump said. [ applause ] >> reporter: fiorina came into the debate with just 4% in the polls, trump at 27%. analysts think trump's failure to show command of policy in this debate could turn the tables. >> i think people were expecting more, so i think he actually hurt himself in the course of this debate. >> reporter: analysts say the former republican front-runner jeb bush did come out with a stronger performance in the debate this time. we'll have to wait and see if that really helps him pick up any momentum. on the other hand, dr. ben carson came into this debate nearly tied with donald trump in one of the recent polls didn't really manage to stand out. they say, unfortunately, he seemed to have faded in the background much of the time. reena, kendis.

it was fight night number two, and all eyes going into the scene and debate may have been on donald trump, but it was former hewlett-packard ceo carly fiorina who really stole the spotlight. she didn't even qualify for the last gop debate but her jabs at donald trump and taking on planned parenthood put her there. trump was in the lion's den as expected but jeb bush's target mostly his own during their hand-to-hand combat. whether trump can keep those soaring poll numbers after his continued attacks will be something to closely watch. marco rubio was the dark horse of the night bringing strong answers and jabs on foreign policy and his family history, but other candidates needed a bigger win and more air time, and that just didn't happen for scott walker, tom cruz and mike huckabee. ben carson was one of the surprise winners after the last gop debate as reflected in his rising poll numbers. will the same thing happen to carly fiorina now? well, that remains to be seen. kendis, reena. >> thank you so much. and another gauge of who's benefiting the most from the

debate, check out these fresh numbers from twitter. >> yeah. here's who gained the most followers during the debate, fiorina added 19,000. carson with 18,000 new followers and trump, 10,000. bush and rubio rounding out the top, both adding 6,000 followers. and stay with abc news for the latest on the debate. later in "the pulse," the many expressions of donald trump plus more in-depth analysis on "good morning america." well, the morning's other big, powerful story, a deadly earthquake shaking chile. that was the scene in a supermarket when the magnitude 8.3 quake struck off chile's northern coast. at least five people were killed and a million have been evacuated, mostly from coastal areas flooded from small tsunami waves. they've been told to stay on high ground until later today. there have been more than a dozen strong aftershocks. officials here in the u.s. were taking no chances issuing tsunami advisories for parts of

the california coast and for hawaii. they say all the data indicates no major tsunami. orange county, california, authorities say that they don't expect widespread flooding, but they are telling everyone to stay off the beach. also in the west, crews are hoping to find a 6-year-old boy caught up in those deadly flash floods on the utah/arizona border. three women and nine children died after their vehicles were swept away, and the search for a missing hiker trapped in the floods in zion park's keyhole canyon resumes today. at least six other hikers are dead. and new details from california's fire zone. two deaths now confirmed in the butte fire. one of those is a 66-year-old man who refused to evacuate. a neighbor says he was disabled. authorities are also discovering the body of another man. the fire is 47% contained. well, a program to get syrian rebels ready for battle against isis has been called a complete failure by one u.s. senator. that comment came as a top u.s.

general in the middle east admitted there are just four or five trained rebels in the fight. the half billion dollar program was approved to have 5400 rebels trained by the end of the year. well, europe's refugee crisis is heating up. thousands of migrants are now going through croatia to reach safe zones in the european union. they want to avoid hungary which has closed its borders. yesterday hungarian riot police fought with refugees using tear gas and water cannons and refugees blocked from crossing from turkey into greece are threatening a hunger strike. president obama meets today with three american heroes who took down a gunman on a train bound for paris. army specialist alek skarlatos and airman spencer stone, as well as college student, anthony sadler, were vacationing in europe when they stopped the attack last month. before coming home they were given france's highest honor. today the president gets a chance to offer his thanks in person. well, no laughing matter on capitol hill. funnyman jon stewart grilling lawmakers.
