reporter mel knee woodrow in middle town. >> most residents have not been allowed here and you can see why. this home, totally destroyed. all that's left standing here is really a swing set. but as we pan around, another street just directly -- or rather another home just directly across the street has been okay. >> this is what it looks like not far from middletown community united methodist church. homes in ashes. >> it survived the 1918 fire of middle town that took out all of downtown. so, 97 years later, it also survived.

our faith gives us strength to get over these tough times. >> chp says this driver from hidden valley became verbally combative with firefighters in middle town because they didn't save his friend's home. law enforcemented officers escorted the man out. a much different scenario from the largely faith-driven community that has taken this in stride. >> lake county, there's, you know, a big indian background here. and then, of course, urban hot springs is here so it is a spiritually-based community. >> the supply store is open to the few residents here. >> i think until pg&e gets the power back on, it's just too hard to flag cars through all of the time. >> meantime, firefighters are going home-to-home making sure there's no flare ups.

>> reporter: despite the massive devastation, many are okay. two churches in cobb and hidden valley, did not make it. >> melanie, thank you. right now, residents are returning home. the mandatory evacuation order was listed at 4:00 p.m. >> as we mentioned, three people have been confirmed dead as another result of the valley fire. cadaver dogs discovered the two men that were reported missing on tuesday. the 69-year-old was a former reporter for the san jose mercury news. he last spoke with his wife on saturday, telling her that he was evacuating her home. >> a lot of survivors who lost

up to stop the fire from spreading through the small county town. >> this one that come this way was the one that hit us: that one come up and it splitment it went around us. it went around us. >> we stopped. none of us were scared. it was just a fire. >> we the people saved it. >> the cause of the fire is still under investigation. however, pg&e officials strongly believe the fire started when one of its own power lines came in contact with a tree. the fire started last wednesday. >> people screamed in fear in chile during another powerful

aftershock. hundreds of aftershocks have been reported. some as large as magnitude 7. the death toll is at ten, bud expected today be higher. >> chile gets more of its share than big quakes. the biggest was a 9.5 that devastated chile back in 1960. >> abc 7 news reporter has the impact here at home. >> more than 4,000 chileans live here in san francisco. the aftershocks still going, many say they feel the impact. >> the mission smells of paprika and fresh dough. independence day is tomorrow

we're talking wetter than average, as well, if this out look holds up. right now, though, it's dry and we'll remain that way as high pressure is building in to dom nate to bring us quite a significant warm-up. as a matter of fact, tomorrow, the warming will begin. 70s to near 80 around the bay. by saturday, we'll see mid to upper 90s, inland. highs at or above 100. that's this sunday, mostly 90s around the bay and mid to upper 70s around the coast. lows tonight, under mainly clear skies generally in the mid to upper 50s. 10 pleasantly cool conditions. you might see a patch or two of low clouds developing. highs will be in the upper 60s to near 70 at the coast. we'll see 70s to perhaps some low 80s right around the bay. places like antioch may heat up

. >> here are today's headlines where you live at 4:30. at least ten people were killed by a powerful earthquake in chile. several large aftershocks have been felt. a san francisco police officer is recovering in the hospital from a motorcycle accident. sky 7 hd was over the crash in daly city. police say the officer was in a training session when he lost control of his motorcyclement his injuries are not considered critical. in all the devastation, valley fire evacuees are finding lots of support. here are workers bringing toys to kids, courtesy of cal fire and san francisco firefighters.

cal fire will hold a community meeting a half hour now to brief rez desidents on the valley fir. now, some are learning they may not be getting to see their homes any time soon. janet is live with the story. janet? >> reporter: alma, this was one of the three staging areas where people gathered each day to go back to their home. the escort program largely popular because it gave people the chance to put their worries and their fears to rest as this was a rare chance to go back to their home and check up on their pets. >> why can't we go back, though? >> that's the question people keep asking today. but a program that would have allowed people to check on their pets and to see their homes for the first time since the fire broke out has been suspended. >> yeah, very lucky. we didn't know anything about our house until we saw it. >> a share of spokespersons says

they need the extra manpower at the burn site in evacuation centers. the reality is hard to comprehend for those who are still waiting for answers. >> i'm just cared they're not going to be there when we're able to go back. >> others never had a chance to get off the waiting list for the escort program. >> i spoke to the sheriff's yesterday. and i took people to middletown yesterday. but not the cops. >> and why is that? >> because cobb is closed due to the fires. >> barthalomew's house was a rescue for the animals. she was only able to grab her dog and a handful of kittens. still, she's so thankful. janet oaks, abc 7 news. >> and there's so many people, unfortunately, that do need help.

>> we've been talking to a lot of people today about insurance. there's a lot of needs, a lot of misinformation and actually a lot of good information here, too. let me start off with the three things you should do if you're caught up in this fire and you have snurps. first off, it sounds simple, but read your policy. if you don't have a policy, then you need to request one. if you lost it in the fire, your insurance company will give you a new one and then read that. then you need to make an initial request for living expenses. many will give you $5,000. that's pretty standardment but you're nt going to get it unless you ask. and finally, you need to find your tribe. find others like you that have lost homes if your area hopefully that have the same insurance companies. that way, you can work together as a group. and a member of your tribe, no doubt, will be amy boch. what's the biggest mistake people make in this circumstance? >> well, certainly people who

didn't buy insurance are feeling pretty sad about that. and then the biggest mistake people who have insurance will make is having an unrealistic idea of what the claim process is going to be like. >> so they kick back when they ought to be leaning in? >> exactly. they'll have been watching kmeshls with the magic wand and, you know, the insurance company is there to help. those are commercials. this is a business negotiation, in a sense. because you are dealing with a for-profit business. and your objectives are not exactly the same, but you give them a chance to do the right thing, things should go okay. >> and if they have any questions, they can contact united policyholders? >> exactly. and our web site has all kinds of tips and advice. a lot of our volunteers will be coming into the area, and a lot of them been there, done that, went through wild fires and will be here to help this community. >> thank you sr. much. amy has been here all day helping people with insurance.

well, this is the day after the big gop debate at the reagan library in southern california. carly fiorina stood out while coming pretty much from every direction. >> reporter: today is all about who stood out and who flopped in the gop debate: round 2. rand paul on donald trump. >> his visceral response to attack people on their appearance, short, tall, fat, ugly, my goodness, that happened in junior high. >> donald trump on rand paul. >> i never attacked him on his look. and believe me, there's plenlty of subject mat ere right there. >> jeb bush ramped up the energy demanding trump apologize to his mexican-born wife. >> she's right here and i want you to apologize to her. >> no, i won't do that, because i said nothing wrong. but i do hear she's a lovely woman.

role in the debate. democratic candidate bernie sanders was live tweeting including this snarky reference where the debate was held. the quote is okay, let's vote for reagan. sound better than any of these guys. other people were distracted by a man sitting behind the moderator in the audience who became known simply as hot debate guy. >> the federal reserve is keeping interest rates at record lows. many analysts expected the fed to raise the interest rates today. but the sharp economic slowdown in china and drop in financial markets kept the feds from taking action.

trying to burglarize home that is had to be evacwaited in a hurry. sheriff's deputies arrested these men this morning. deputies say the men clearly did not know their way around when they were stopped. inside their vehicle, investigators found a loaded weapon, masks, gloves, duct tape and other tools, as well. >> sadly, the death toll has now climbed to three. the sheriff's office discovered the remains of two men yesterday in the hidden valley area. they're believed to be bruce burns and leonard neft who was reported missing on friday. 72-year-old barbara mcwilliams was the first victim of the fire. she never made it out of her anderson springs homes last saturday. >> the rain yesterday both helped and hurt the effort to fight the flames. abc "newsroom" reporter is live tonight. you met a woman today who never left her home, even as the fire

raged around it? >> that's what i understand. we are snou six days into this tragedy. so far, most of these folks have lost everything. have not been allowed back in here to see what their homes looked like. cal fire says it's still not safe enough. it's too dangerous. the rain certainly helped. but it also made things slippery. >> as the containment line grows, the clean-up effort is just beginning. much of it focused on clearing the thou sands of fallen, endangered trees. some of them still smoldering that littered the burn area. still, the process of allowing residents to return to their homes to see what's left is a ways off. >> it may look like the fire is out because there's no smoke and flames. but the potential of a hot ember from the wind getting ignited on the other side of the containment lines, that's what we don't want to do. >> did anyone tell you to leave? >> no.
