us. here is the latest on the valley fire. additional evacuation orders have been lifted in etna springs and james creek areas of napa county. tonight more than 7,200 homes remain in danger, 585 have been completely destroyed. the fire is 74,000 acres and it is now 48% contained. in calistoga this morning people lined newspaper their cars hoping to check on their homes and animals. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard joined several evacuees who were heartbroken by what they found. he joins us live with for. >> reporter: natasha, very tough homecoming today, many folks did not know what to expect when they returned to middletown after being gone for more than a week and some were very shocked at what they found. the first wave of evacuees returned to the town they left one week ago, some had no idea what they would find.

also know >> reporter: the middletown assistance center is open to help fire victims. >> critical records, department of motor vehicles something was salvaged. >> reporter: this is my brother house mug that he made in the first grade. >> reporter: let me show you a show of downtown middletown it is coming back to life. it's being repopulated in the last couple of hours, coffee stores, grocery stores reopening for the first time. if you are returning to the evacuation area you must show identification before going through the road blocks. in calistoga or in lower lake expect delays. we're told the delays have been quite epic this morning. we are also told that twin pine casino will be acting as a temporary shelter so folks do not have to return to the napa county fairgrounds if they don't want to.

live in middletown, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. >> unbelievable for those folks. thank you. residents were escorted to their homes in middle valley lake, loch lomond, cobb. they only had 15 minutes to see if their homes were still standing and to retrieve or feed animals. they are not allowed to get any personal items or even medication. authorities are warning those who return home to be careful cleaning up the ash. they say triage is nontoxic, but, however, the ash from burned homes and other items can be toxic. sonoma county deputies say to wear a mask when cleaning, do not use leaf blowers as they push the ash in the air. use a hepa vacuum instead. if any ash gets on to your skin it's important to wash it off as soon as possible because wet ash can cause chemical burns. today workers began to clean out the soot and smoke that's damaged schools in middletown and that includes purifying the air, wiping down surfaces, specialized vacuuming and

throwing out rotten food inside those frijs. just one school was severely damaged. located inappropriately ma valley high school with a continuation high school for middletown high, there ises will be relocated while it's being rebuilt. middletown expects school to reopen either next friday or the following monday. tomorrow will be a spare the air day in the bay area, the 8th of the season. the air district said it's because of the smoke, also because of the heat. abc 7 news meteorologist drew tuma told us about this warm up and it looks like it's here. >> whether it like you or not mother nature giving us a warm end to the final weekend of the summer season. our emeryville camera, good air today. poor air quality especially in our inland east bay and santa clara valley. if you can tomorrow take public transit, carpool, walk or bike to cut down on emissions. the big story today it's warm up

out there 79 in san francisco, 86 oakland, 86 san jose as well, antioch 95 and fairfield checking in at a warm temperature of 92 degrees. so we will take you outside, a live look from our golden gate bridge camera showing you we are sun soaked out there, folks taking in the sites of the city and our evening planner does show you lots of sunshine early on, that sun goes down at 7:11 from there on out plenty of stars but rather warm, by 11:00, between 58 and 70 degrees. the second half of the weekend we're even warmer than today. we will detail that those numbers in just a few minutes. switching gears to another fire now. 250 more homes have been destroyed by the butte fire in amador and al var res counties. that brings the total loss to 500 homes since the fire started ten days ago. right now 6400 homes still remain threatened. the fire is 70,000 acres, 65% contained. two people have been killed. >> i want to show you this mountain lion cub, he is an

example of an animal who couldn't run fast enough from the flames. he was badly burned when volunteers found him and named him fire claw because of his injured paws. he is still in fragile condition today if he makes a full recovery he will not be released back into the wild. people are worried that wild animals could be in danger because of the fires. wildlife experts say sther at risk although many can escape the flames. >> it really depends on the fire as to which species are going to be impacted and the character of the fire. smaller species that can't run a long duration and really fast may not be able to get out ahead of a fast moving fire, but a slow creeping fire many of the larger species can. you will remember this fire was explosive when it began last weekend but since then the growth has been much slower allowing for wildfire to escape the path. for bears it actually helps drive prey towards them. a construction worker was killed overnight after being hit

by a suspected drunk driver along interstate 580 in oakland. highway patrol says the driver veered into the section of the westbound lanes that had been closed for road work near lake shore avenue hitting and killing a caltrans contractor. the victim has been identified as 33-year-old miguel dell la cruise of oakland. >> loses control of the vehicle, veers to the right, hits the wall, loses control to the left and enters a construction scene where he strikes a pedestrian, a worker and two vehicles. >> the driver was arrested at the scene. lanes of 580 were closed for several hours to allow highway patrol to investigate the death. petaluma police are looking for the man who groped a woman early friday morning in the city's down tan area. the suspect is described as a hispanic adult in his 20s or 30s, he grabbed the woman as she walked along fifth street. she screamed and he ran away but he has not yet been found. actually, in a separate incident petaluma police are on

the lookout for a man who raped a woman inside of her own home. sky 7 hd shows officers searching the west ridge subdivision yesterday. a woman walked into her house, she was confronted by a man wearing a facemask. he restrained and then raped her. a relative said that her two young children were not home at the time. still ahead on abc 7 news at 4:00, a bay area effort to save pets from dinner tables. plus what's on the agenda for the pope's historic u.s. visit? and listen up movie fans, coming to a nor cal theater not too far from you, new technology that puts you right in the middle of the action.

pope francis is in cuba this afternoon. it's his first ever visit to the country and as you can imagine it's generating a lot of excitement. abc 7 news reporter aaron katersky is in havana for his historic visit. >> reporter: pope francis land landed in havana to begin the longest overseas journey, a ten day troip cuba and the united states, two places he has never been. >> this is not about privilege, it's not about we are the only ones here, it's about recognizing the role and the mission of the church in the

society. >> reporter: cuban president raúl castro greeted the pope who has endeared himself to the ruler with his critique of capitalism but he is expected to push castro for greater religious freedom. they have been sprucing up the city welcoming papa francisco who brokered restored ties between cuba and the united states. 90% of the population is willing to participate in this important event this man said. it will have a crucial impact for the moment we are going through. americans who have come here recognize t too. >> i think his message of love and of hope has touched me and everyone else that's here and you can see it in everyone in our group and everyone who is in cuba. >> reporter: francis is the third pope to visit cuba but he is the first from latin america. he will speak to these adoring crowds in spanish, but to prepare for his american audiences, we're told the pope has been meticulous in his study

of english. aaron katersky, abc news, havana. abc 7 news anchor ama daetz will be live in washington, d.c. the first of three cities the hope will visit when he arrives in the on tuesday. watch for her reports this week and join her as abc news follows pope francis on this historic trip. dozens of dogs arrived in their new home today, they were rescued from almost certain death overseas. take a look. these dogs arrived at sfo this afternoon. what cutees. they were greeted by staff members from the plaster county spca, also the humane society. they were being raised for food in their native south korea, it's a practice the humane society has been trying to bring an end to. part of their effort involves an airlift of these dogs over the pacific where hopefully they will find a new home and new life in the u.s. >> they come over here and they are probably going to see grass for the first time and concrete and, you know, sooner or later a home and a couch and, you know,

a collar and a bed and toys and all kinds of good stuff. >> time to spoil them, right? the humane society says there's greater awareness about bringing an end to consumption of dogs in south korea and say more families are adopting them as household pets jie hope you have made it outside today because it is just perfect beach weather this weekend. in fact, tens of thousands of people volunteered their time this morning to make sure that those beaches look pristine. these are just some of the volunteers who helped pick up garbage along san francisco's ocean beach as part of coastal cleanup day, it's in its 31st year. the annual event draws people to 850 locations statewide. >> i feel like now in today's society we throw trash like it's nothing so i feel like it really helps that we -- every little bit counts so if we can come out here and clean up the beach and make a big difference in our environment. >> the cleanup typically collects more than a million pounds of trash off of state waterways. drew, you promised the

with a preview. never know what to expect when these two teams match up. >> reporter: they played a lot of close games but tonight stanford is a pretty good size underdog. i'm standing outside the player's tunnel which leads down to the field at the l.a. coliseum. we will see some of the players head on down. stanford comes in at a ten point underdog and the big reason is because of the usc's powerful offense led by cody kessler this is loaded by play makers after dominating arkansas state and idaho they are averaging 620 yards of offense per contest. it's going to be a huge test for a young stanford defense that lost nine starters from last year's team. >> this is a big, big, big team defense game. like they all are, but this one in particular when you have so many guys that can be special with the ball in their hands. it's really about playing as an

suspect reached speeds of 100 mile an hour, drove into oncoming traffic slamming head on into another suv. the deputy in the helicopter hot and killed the driver from the air. >> it's a public safety issue. once he starts going the wrong way obviously he doesn't care about passengers or pedestrians or other cars that are on the vehicle -- >> sheriffs officials say pilots and deputies assigned to helicopter units are trained and authorized to fire their weapons when flying. those instances, though, have been rare. a man authorities connected to four shootings along a highway in arizona appeared in court for the first time today. leslie merritt jr. faces several spell niece including terrorism charges. he told the judge that he is the wrong guy, that his gun has been at a pawn shop for the last two months. the judge, though, impose add $1 million cash only bond saying that this man's release could bring substantial fear to the community. merit's father told the news crew that his son is not the shooter. >> would you like to te me

about him or say anything on his behalf? >> yeah, i will say plenty on his behalf. whoever said he is the i-10 shooter is a [ bleep ] moron. have a good night. >> authorities arrested merit last night at a walmart in phoenix. they say his gun is connected to four of the 11 shootings along interstate 10 since last august. investigators believe that there may be copy cats involved in the other shootings. the only injury was fortunately a 13-year-old girl, she was just cut by broken glass, expected to be okay. a pennsylvania man saved a woman from an rv that was engulfed in flames and setting fire to really everything in its path. today we're hearing from the hero who risked his life to save her. abc 7 news reporter tai hernandez has the details. >> reporter: overnight new pictures emerging of a horrific scene unfolding as an rv home ignites into a red hot inferno in the middle of traffic in a small pennsylvania town. you can see the rv bursting into names, onlookers stunned as the thick black smoke bill lows high

into the air. >> we are driving along and awful a sudden smoke started rolling out of the back of the motor home. >> reporter: chris taking an unbelievable risk after learning there was a woman tramd inside the rv the navy veteran heroically spring noog action. >> i ran inside and it was so toxic, i went to my knees, i couldn't see in front of me and then finally i felt her leg, the woman was unconscious. so i picked her up and i drug her all the way to the front of the rv and the flames were within about two feet of her inside. >> reporter: the danger quickly spread. watch as the suv hitched to the back of the rv breaks off, catching fire, hits another vehicle and nearly slams into the bystander capturing the scene on voochlt the power lines above igniting and literally snapping from the heat. >> it looked like a war zone. i had to do what i could. >> that was tai hernandez reporting. four vehicles were destroyed

including the rv which the couple called home. they're getting help from the red cross but are safe tonight because of that stranger's leap to action. a london bound flight was canceled this morning after the airplane's wing hit a fence at new york's kennedy airport. this is video taken by a passenger on virgin atlantic flight 26. the boeing 747's wing scraped that fence as it was being pushed back from the gate by a tug. the flight was immediately canceled. a new theater experience is coming to nor cal. imagine moves your eyes side to side and being able to see all of the action around you. reporter guy breel carol has more. >> reporter: the home beaver yens continues to get better and if we don't continue to make the cinema experience better, so much better that it's compelling, something you can't get at home then we're going to be in trouble. well, this is a pretty good step and i think years from now our children, our grandchildren are going to look back and say, you used to watch a movie on a

single screen? >> reporter: todd is confident the technology will draw bigger audiences willing to pay more for the three screens. the tickets lost $6 more, but movie goer gary roberts says he's still interested. >> more of an experience, sure, because really with rentals now, i mean, you can watch movies in your home and with the wide screen tv, i mean, it's not bad so why go to a movie is because it's different, it's more, it's bigger. so some of the extra stuff is worth t. >> reporter: apparently many audience members agree. played i can't premiered the screens last night for the opening of maze runner scorch trials. guys as many people bought the more expensive ticket. >> everybody seemed to have a great time, we got a lot of autos and you as when it started up and everybody enjoyed it. >> reporter: some say the regular screens are big enough already. darlene miller hopes three screens do not become the norm.

hispanic family names. it's been playing all over social media but now getting some criticism from the community it's meant to target. they call this marketing campaign hispandering. >> this is my family name and there is a legacy and heritage that comes with the name >> i love the name rodriguez. >> coca-cola made this short film to highlight a few hispanic families and the pride they share towards their last names. then a bright red coca-cola truck comes into the neighborhood handing out coke cans, each one displaying a hispanic last name. >> hispanic groups say coke goes too far, linking pride to a soft drink during hispanic heritage month. >> it's turning into some extended cinco de mayo marketing
