francis tomorrow. he will be the first pope to address a joint meeting of congress. pope francis left by motorcade for the many tried to get closer to the building where the pope will sleep this evening. the pope will make stops in new york as well as philadelphia. tomorrow, pope francis is scheduled to bestow sainthood on the father of the california missions. here in washington, they're making last minute preparations for the ceremony. thousands of people are expected to attend the controversial rise to sainthood.

resort that will reopen after closing in 2009. the owner will welcome evacuees on thursday. response teams from every insurance company imaginable are in lake county, helping residents. mary works for a company trying to find familys. >> we try to get them as close as we can to their home. some people we have found out registered their kids at different schools because they can't drive to get them to the school. >> reporter: many families are choosing to relocate. christine will stay and plans to create a shelter of her own. >> hopefully, we'll have a place to go home if it's still there, i'm sure it is. we'll open our home to others to help them that lost their homes. >> reporter: the generosity of the community continues to amaze us. casino managers say there are 100 people in this shelter tonight with room for more by

the weekend. 200 people could be staying here. in middleton, abc7 news. later on tonight, michael finney will have pointed questions from the red cross about what they will, and won't do in a fire disaster like the one in lake county. firefighters mopped up hot spots in the butte fire. some response crews are heading home now. a 1-year-old girl is in the hospital after falling from a one story building. police say a fence was supposed to block the opening of the building but she fell about 15-20 feet and landed on her head. no word on how serious the injuries are. well, an executive from lawrence livermore national laboratory was killed during her morning workout in a crash involving an elderly driver.

the 49-year-old kathy baker was working out at the life styles gym on east stanley boulevard. an suv just crashed through the glass doors. the vehicle didn't stop for 20 feet. baker died from her injuries and five others were injured. police say the woman is 80 years old and trying to park when it happened. >> we believe she had pedal confusion. that is where you hit the gas pedal instead of the brakes. she crashed through the gym, crashing into a classroom. >> the driver was not seriously hurt. police say she could face charges depending on the investigation. the 349ers fans accused of beating up a vikings family were charged with assault. one faces up to four years in prison and two others face up to seven years. cell phone video shows that incident. witnesses say it started when two fans began trash talking.

security broke up the fight. >> this is not a case about sports rivalry, team jerseys, san francisco 49ers, or minnesota vikings. this is a case about senseless criminal violence. >> it prompted two santa clara city council members to suggest the city stop alcohol sales after half time at the stadium. the city council meeting on that issue begins in an hour. a santa clara county judge is ordering the parents of a boy with autism and their neighbors to deal with their conflict through mediation. the neighbors claim the boy was a threat to their safety. chris nguyen is in san jose. >> reporter: at the sunnivale cul-de-sac, an dispute between neighbors. >> it was great reluctance. we needed to protect the safety of the children. >> reporter: the co-plaintiffs are in a lawsuit filed against their neighbors claiming the

couple did not do enough to prevent their son from assaulting their children as well as other people in the neighborhood. they say the child's aggression got worse over a two-year period. today, a judge recommended the two sides head to mediation in october. co-plaintiff robert flowers welcomes dialogue. >> my hope is that when we meet with the defendants, we can finally at long last come to a workable solution. >> reporter: according to documents, the attacks happened on multiple occasions and they have moved out of the home but are renting it out. the plaintiff v plaintiffs are seeking damages and assurances their son will be better supervised should the family return to the neighborhood. >> whether it's a autistic child or typical child, we need to make sure our children are acting in safe mannerers and not

now, we want to update you on the disappearance of a benicia family whose cabin went up in flames. the three have not been seen in a week. two bodies were found in the ashes of the fire but the questions remain on how did the fire start. >> reporter: one year ago, benicia contractor adam buchanan paid $210,000 for this unfinished cabin. a neighbor says he wasted no time getting to work. >> i've seen him around on the weekends. not -- a few times during the week, but mostly the weekends. like a weekend place for them, or something. >> reporter: the visits came to

an end a week ago, sunday, fire destroyed the cabin. >> i got a phone call saying the fire is 300 feet from our house. i raced home. the next day we heard details of remains being found. >> reporter: adam, his wife and their son haven't been seen from the fire. but saying the destruction was so complete, positive remains won't come until next week. a neighbor recorded video of a truck being impounded several days after the fire, nobody here saw the family vehicle, a newer white ford pick up. could that have been the truck that detectives saw in benicia? >> sheriffs showed up and at 9:00 at night they towed a way atruck. >> during the search, they found

a 16-year-old and detained him briefly. he is now staying with his grandmother. so many questions about what happened and why. the sheriff's office promises answers will come tomorrow. the young ceo of a drug company that hiked a price of one of his drugs by 5,000% is backing down tonight but his actions sparked a conversation about drug prices. a lot of people believe this is long overdue. >> yes. we talked to a local advocate who say the ceo's price hike was outrageous but say they're not surprised because the drug prices have been inching up for years now. the pressure of this price of the pill pushed him to bend. >> we agreed to lower it to a

price that is more affordable and able to allow the company to make a profit, but a small profit. we think the changes will be welcome. >> reporter: the drug has been used to treat cancer in aids victims but skraly is a former hedge fund manager turned pharmaceutical company owner, he decided to hike the price from $18 a bill to $750 a pill. that move touched a nerve for many in the community in san francisco. >> everybody is about disrupting, disrupting. and this guy is trying to disrupt you know peoples' access to life saving medication. >> reporter: brian says many patients would be priced out. but these advocates say this is not an isolated case of sticking consumers. >> i think this is such an egregious case and so dramatic that it sparked a lot of

at the scene. >> breaking news continues on abc7news.com. well, listen to this. a disabled dog's wheelchair is missing tonight and the family is calling for your help. buddha is losing nerve function that allows him to walk. a family has to carry him up and down the stairs. well, over a week ago, someone stole the wheelchair from the street while the dog's owner was carrying him down the stairs. the owner says it's hard for buddha to move. >> very uncomfortable for him. he was going 2 to 3 miles and could keep up with our other dog. and doing phenomenal. it was good to see him running again. >> the family says the wheelchair costs about $400. they set up a gofundme account to get a new wheelchair.

people in the bay area are so generous, donating tens of thousands of dollars to the red cross following the devastation of the valley fire. >> but with that money comes criticism over how the organization has handled the relief effort. >> michael finney joins us tonight in middleton. he went to race at the top to get answers. michael? >> if you take a look online at my page or my twitter account, you're going to see a lot of complaints about the red cross and the way they're handling everything up here in the valley fire. so i took those complaints and went to the local red cross ceo. red cross has provided relief and is taking an amazing amount of grief.

my facebook page and twitter account are filled with concerns about the red cross. today, in middleton i sat down with trevor riggin. >> ryan g says they keep the majority of the money. jim y says he heard reports only 8% of the donations go to services. charity navigator says 90% goes over goods and services. what are the snakts. >> for the red cross as a whole, $0.91 of every dollar is going to our services in the community. it will be the same for this disaster. >> those writing to me are concerned about where the money is being spent. >> we're committed any money designated to be spent in california wildfires supports the wildfires in california. >> another issue is the rejection of volunteers and material donations. tim m says ask red cross why

they're turning away donations left and right. they won't let anyone drop off donations at their fire sites. >> so we have changed that. we did put that messages out. that fell into the category of we didn't have the right coordination going on at the fair grounds. >> the red cross admits it failed to build partnerships before the disaster. >> worked with the county and fair grounds to identify a partner, center for volunteers brought a leadership role. >> the red cross doesn't take donations of physical goods but tries to partner with other charities that do, and accused of having problems around the country, around the world. >> why is it every time there is a major disaster, it seems like the red cross ends up in a major scandal? sandy, recent one, trucks you

>> san jose could be living on the same block. the city wants to spend $2.4 million to acquire the plaza hotel to house 49 homeless people. it's called rapid rehousing. small projects were portable housing can be set up. the cost of the conversion would cost about $45,000 for each of the 49 units, about one tenth of the cost of creating a new facility. >> it would cost more to build in san jose. so the city will rehabilitate older motels, use them for housing at a bargain. >> the city recognizes there are many kinds of homeless with different issues. the plaza would be targeted for
