live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. >> pope francis shows affection and love for children this morning in washington, d.c., as masses of adoring catholics lined the papal parade route to welcome the pontiff on his first full day in the united states. good morning, i'm sheryl jennings. >> and i'm kristin zee. pope francis is preaching a message of tolerance. >> the pontiff just finished his midday prayer with the bishops at st. matthew's cathedral. he also spoke to a large and enthusiastic crowd outside the white house earlier this morning. >> and happening now, people are still gathered outside where he's staying in washington,

d.c., those smaller crowds now, but they're waiting for him to return. abc is in washington with more on his eventful day. ♪ >> reporter: pope francis meets a joyous crowd with handshakes and hugs as ee departs the vatican embassy, climbing into his humble fiat for the ride to the white house. ♪ horns blare as he arrived in the tiny car. the president and first lady smiled broadly as they welcomed the holy father. >> your holiness, in your words and deeds, you've set a profound moral example. >> reporter: one of the largest crowds ever on the white house south lawn, 11,000, there for the pope's opening remarks to the american people. >> as the son of an immigrant family, i'm happy to be a guest

in this country which was lastly built by such families. >> reporter: speaking in english the pope called for a society protective of religious freedom and of the environment. >> climate change is a problem we can no longer be left to our future generations. >> reporter: pope francis and the president then head in for a meeting in the oval office before his holiness boards the popemobile for a procession along the national mall. thousands more lined the parade route to cheer on the popular pontiff. the pope is also meeting with u.s. bishops today. later this afternoon, he'll deliver his first mass here in the u.s., and then tomorrow he'll be here on capitol hill to speak to congress. abc news, washington. and abc news anchor is in washington, d.c., for the pope's

visit. they tweeted this, meeting with a few lucky ticket holders to today's mass. they will be among the thousands at the basilica of the national shrine of the immaculate concepcion when the pontiff declares the father a saint. and sky 7 hd shows you that well-known statue of the father off interstate 280 in hillsborough. he established nine of california's 21 missions. and is a controversial figure. abc 7 news reporter matt keller joins us with more. matt. >> reporter: in less than an hour, the daily mass is going to take place right here in the basilica, but the big show, of course, is going to be outside. this afternoon when the carmel mission becomes the home of a saint. the carmel mission is known for its history, not its modern technology, but today is not just any day. a huge big screen is needed to broadcast live the pope's cannonization mass in washington, d.c., for junipe

richjunipero. today's cannonization is not without controversy. father serra has been criticized for using coercive force and corporal punishment to native americans. a group talked about the blessing of the graveyard today. the diocese of monterey said they're trying to build bridges as they work with indigenous leaders to have their story told at the mission. that story will be told to a lot more people. the carmel mission draws about 125,000 people a year. which could double following serra's cannonization. >> it's bigger than what i think the city appreciates at this point. many catholics want to make a pilgrimage to where saints are buried. father serra is buried at the altar here. i think we'll see an increase in tourism. >> reporter: estimates today for the audience are aniy from 500 to 3,000 people. the pastor, bishop and others

and back here at home, new details on the ab bukz thductio triggered an amber alert. 5-year-old jacob steele was taken from a home about 4:0 t30 this morning. he was found safe about 7:30 and the amber alert was deactivated. his father, michael steele, on the right, has been taken into custody. a caltrain train hit a man standing too close to the tracks in mountain view this morning. it happened just before 7:45 near showers drive. sky 7 hd shows you the scene. trains were delayed by up to an hour. but we just got word that the train involved has been moved and the system is back on schedule. the man was rushed to a hospital. he is still alive. a van rolled over on interstate 80 in the heart of the morning commute, made a mess of traffic into san francisco. the backup is so long. traffic reporter layla leyla

gulen joins us. >> that's a look right now at the bay bridge toll plaza. if you are traveling from the east bay, i'll tell you where those backups are located. first i want to show you the eastern span of the bay bridge. you can see that traffic, it is still chug ago long, albeit slower, but once you get past treasure island, you're still moving pretty decent into san francisco. this is where the slowdowns remain. this is right through berkeley and emeryville. you can see where the yellow starts at the hoffman split. 15 miles per hour and then onto the bay grij, you still have a wait on your hands. all in all, between the hoffman split right into san francisco, going to take about 36 minutes. >> thank you. new this morning, the lake county sheriff's office believes they have located the remains of a fourth fire victim near cobb. 66-year-old robert fletcher was reported missing by his family on september 16th. while a positive identification has not been made, the sheriff's office believes the remains

found belong to fletcher. he was one of two people still missing after their homes were destroyed. robert litchnor's family and friends have not heard from him. there will be a press conference in middletown to talk about the next step in recovery. residents will have a chance to ask questions at a public meeting tomorrow night at middletown high school at 6:00. the fire is now 80% contained with just over 76,000 acres burned. new this morning, a san francisco firefighter is facing possible disciplinary charged for allegedly drinking on the job. "the chronicle" reports the firefighter missed an alarm call while on duty at a grocery fire house. according to the report, his blood-alcohol level was found to be more than four times the limit for on-duty firefighters. he's reportedly a 46-year-old firefighter at station 21 who was ordered to work a shift in august after completing his regular assignment. well, he said he had a medical appointment to attend but was denied and that's when it is believed he got drunk.

an investigation is under way this morning into what appears to be two home invasion robberies in as many days in the north bay. the more recent happened at a home in sausalito on central avenue last night. you can see the heavy police presence. several officers including a k-9 unit responded to the 911 call. it's not clear if anyone was inside at the time. monday night police responded to a similar incident in tiburon. a masked gunman made his way into a home on reed ranch road, locked a woman in a closet and made off with jewelry. she was not hurt. new information involving the theft of social security numbers and other in was affecting nearly 22 million federal employees. first the government thought a million of those employees had their fingerprint data stolen. now the investigation has revealed that fingerprint theft soared to more than 5.5 million victims. federal experts believe the ability to misuse fingerprint data is limited right now, but they say that could change over time. the safety of federally funded school lunches is being

challenged in a new sanford study. it finds those meals may contain unsafe levels of toxic chemical called vicenol or bpa. it's found in canned goods or plastic packaging. a lot of low-income kids are served food which comes from those containers. it's been linked to health issues ranging from cancer to reproductive issues. a little boy's mom crying foul. what a teacher is accused of doing to her son that even has the school district admitting this went too far. the new tribute that's trending for yankee great yogi berra and how you can honor his legacy. and a live look outside. let's take a look at san francisco international airport. got some spiderwebs out there, and we've got plenty of sunshine. meteorol

irgesz the oakland mayor's office has just announced a major real estate deal that could revitalize a neighborhood. uber has bought the historic sears building downtown. the on-demand ride service now that is 330,000 square feet there. uber projects between 2,000 and 3,000 employees will work there. this would allow uber to become oakland's largest private nonmedical employer. the purchase price was not disclosed. get more updates on the story throughout the day at abc7newsbayarea on twitter. happening now, crews at the airport are conducting their annual training exercise.

abc 7 was at sfo this morning as airport staff and various other agencies worked together to simulate a major earthquake. now, that threat is not real. it's all just a drill. volunteers acted like injured passengers in a terminal and travelers strappeded at an aircraft at a remote location. tributes are pouring in from all around the sports world in memory of yogi berra. a youtube video being shared perhaps best describes his legacy. >> anchored the great yankee dynasty from 1947 to 1963. during this time, other stars such as joe dimaggio, mickey mantle, whitey ford may have shone brighter but none were more important to the yankees' success than was yogi berry. >> the video courtesy of the yogi berry museum, the 90-year-old died yesterday, 69 years to the day after making his debut in major league baseball. berra collected a record ten world series championships in 18

seasons. he was a hall of famer for the yankees and was named to baseball's all-century team. you can pay tribute by sharing this yogi berry badge from our instagram page. an oklahoma mother is demanding action, claiming her 4-year-old son was deemed evil by his teacher for writing with his left hand. alicia sand says she was helping her son with his homework when she noticed he was using his right hand instead of his left. mom is also left-handed. she claims after sending the teacher a note, the teacher responded with a message of her own saying "some cultures associate lefties with the idea of wickedness." >> breaking my heart for him because someone actually believed that. like you believe my child is evil because he's left-handed. it's crazy. >> sand says she has complained to the school. the teacher has not been disciplined. in a statement, oklahoma's department of education says it is investigating, adding "no young child should be made to feel shame because of the hand he or she favors."

san rafael, south bay and all the bay area, this is abc 7 news. >> a new safety app is bringing much relief to parents whose kids are away at college. it's called companion, and the company says it's already one of the most downloaded apps around. it allows parents to virtually walk their child home from school. imagine that. vickie novak, a freshman at university of colorado, is using this app to connect with her mom in california. >> i feel super comfortable using it and knowing that somebody is watching me as i'm walking home. this phone will be notified when my headphones are pulled out, if i fall, if i start running, anything that's unusual and out of the ordinary. >> if something goes wrong, an alert shows up, then mom or anyone else can call to see if she's okay or worst-case

interestingly, the warm spot, concord at 57. and richmond at 59. now, that's as cool as it gets. notice how we don't have a cloud deck over the golden gate bridge this morning. and that's because we have high pressure building in. it's going to bring us a warmer and calmer first day of fall. we'll have a brief warming trend today through at least friday. now, here's the difference from yesterday. remember how brisk it was? our winds are less than ten miles per hour and variable just about everywhere. except for half moon bay at 12. but it's that 12-mile-per-hour wind that's mixing in drier air and taking away the clouds. you'll have a much brighter day than you did yesterday. now, let's take a look at those two areas of high pressure. they're going to hold off that low in the gulf of alaska for the next couple of days. and that's why we're going to warm up. but this time of year with those longer nights, we cannot be denied that cooler weather. and that low and cold front are going to come in sunday, bring autumn back to our forecast. until then, today's just the beginning. low to mid-80s in the south bay from san jose at 82 to 86 in los gatos.

upper 80s around morgan hill. upper 60s along the coast for half moon bay, pacifica. some low 80s for the rest of the peninsula. pretty close to average across san francisco from upper 60s on the bay side or coast side to low to mid-70s on the bay side. petalu petaluma, 79. not nearly as breezy. low to mid-80s elsewhere. east bay without that breeze, berkeley just at 74. hercules, 78. oakland, 76. 80 in fremont. inland, enjoy this. you have mid to upper 80s because the 90s are coming back tomorrow. the good news, temperatures will fall nicely. in fact, we'll be 69 at 7:05 to about 65 by the time the game ends. here's a look at thursday and friday. so you can put the blanket away for a day or two. still have to dress the kids for cool weather in the morning. but notice how we're jumping into the 70s and 90s, but we're back into the 60s, 70s and 80s
