and we will see upper 80s inland. we will talk about particulars and the total eclipse of the moon and even a glimpse of october all coming up in a few minutes. tiffany. >> lisa, thank you. ♪ it has been a busy moment for pope francis on his last day in the russ and there's more to come. pope will hold an open-air mass at 1:00 our time on benjamin frankly parkway in philadelphia. he' chrised the bishops at the seminary this morning. before his speech he visited with five victims of sexual abuse. three women and two men who were victims of teachers, or priests. we are in the city of brotherly love. >> hello. i can see them starting to filter into the the park and this group has no shortage of enthusiasm, but first they have to get here. >> this.

will do it all again today. and to answer the pope's question, mass will be at 4:00 eastern. it will take place right here on the benjamin franklin parkway. that's his last event before heading back to romo. abc news. >> lana, thank you. as lana mentioned, it's just touching moment, shortly after the pope landed in philadelphia yesterday that's correct is going viral. he signaled for his driver to stopped and walked over to a young boy who has cerebral palsy, embraced him and gave a blessing to him and his family before heading off to mass. the prime minister of india, narendra modi, will face protests today as he wraps up his visit to the silicon valley. a group called sikhs for justice will be protesting him at several of his events.

he met yesterday with apple's tim cook and the heads of google, microsoft, cisco and adobe. and elon musk. modi is being heavily guarded during his trip. this is the view from outside his hotel. despite his popularity in india, some of his actions are rights.eted as violating human and trying to convert india to a hindu-only nation. today he will meet with governor jerry brown, speak to to 18 people at the sap center and attend a town hall meeting at facebook. >> in the east bay, a motorcycle chase led chp officers right to a suspected drunk driver. last night the chp tried to pull over a motorcycle, but the riders took off. officers chased the man and woman on the bike for about one minute until the motorcycle hit a car. both people on the bike were thrown off and got hurt. police arrested the driver of the car on suspicion of drunk driving. this morning two men are recovering after a pg&e transformer exploded in san francisco's bernal heights neighborhood. it happened around 7:45 yesterday morning. according to pg&e, the explosion

was caused by equipment failure near wolf street. power has been restored to all customers in the area. federal investigators in seattle said the front axle of a duck boat involved in a deadly crash was sheared off. yesterday the national transportation safety board inspected the wheel of the vehicle. they don't know if the axle came off before or after the boat swerved and hit the side of an oncoming charter bus on thursday. four international college students were killed. witnesses say it looked like the duck boat's left tire locked up and brake fluid shot out of the front end. >> we do plan to take that, along with other parts of the front axle and front drive mechanism and send it back to our laboratories. but it's way too early to say anything about probable cause. >> today investigators will begin interviewing survivors, including a family from fremont, who was on the duck boat when it crashed.

>> i felt like we lost control and looked up and looked up and saw the buses headed toward us. >> katie and her mother are in the hospital with broken collar bones. one of the most destructive fires in california history is nearly under control two weeks after it started. the valley fire is 95% contained. it has burned more than 76,000 acres. the fire destroyed more than 1200 homes and 27 multi-family structures that includes duplexes and apartments. crews are working to renew the natural landscape destroyed by the fire. the butte fire is now 93% contained and nearly 71,000 acres. it has burned 475 homes. all evacuation orders have now been lifted. this morning the red cross is helping six people after a fire destroyed their san jose home. it happened around 4:30 yesterday afternoon on martin

avenue near south white road. the fire quickly went to a second alarm and it was under control a short time later. two residents suffered minor injuries and a firefighter was also hurt. he is being treated at the hospital but is expected to make a full recovery. no air conditioning and little communication. witnesses describe the scene of near panic after a minor accident held passengers onboard a train from burlingame for nearly an hour this weekend. cornell bernard has the story. [train whistle] >> caltrain is back on track along the peninsula, but friday's commute came to a screeching halt. sky 7hd was over burlingame where a northbound express train struck two unoccupied cars on the tracks. none of the 900 passengers were hurt, but no one could get off. >> honestly i thought there was a public health risk there. >> mark was on board. he said there was little communication from the engineer, and then the air conditioning went out. >> it very quickly became 100,

110, probably 120 degrees. people became profusely sweaty. there were elderly on the train i started to get concerned about. >> careful! >> cell phone video shows people escaping out of the emergency windows. those who stayed on board took to social media. mckenzie shared this help picture with us. using the #abc7 now. others demanded answers from caltrain about what was going on. he tweeted how long will the delay be? it's hot in here. benny said i'm on the train that hit the car, it's hot on here. can someone bring me a fan? part two, great t-shirt. >> police telling some passengers to stay on board. >> they threatened everybody with arrest if they jumped out. >> they said the rail line was still active, it was too dangerous. but getting a new train to get passengers on too longer than expected. >> i sincerely apologize to the passengers who were affected by this. it's really unacceptable to me

to have the length of the delay. we have to do a better job. >> more than an hour later passengers were on their way after a long, hot and very scary commute. in burlingame, cornell bernard, abc7 news. >> and this was the third caltrain incident of the week. on tuesday a train hit a car that stopped on the tracks on fourth avenue near san mateo, and on wednesday morning, a man was struck standing on the platform of the san antonio platform in mountain view. a spokesperson said he was standing too close to the train. the man is expected to be okay. >> there will be a rare sight in the sky tonight. a super blood moon will be visible in the u.s. the eclipse will start at 7:11 p.m. as the sun and moon are exactly opposite each other and the earth shadows the moon. it will end at 8:23:00 p.m. it's only the fourth time this has happened in the last 115 years. a super blood moon is only visible during a lunar eclipse and only when the moon is at its closest point to the earth. so just how visible will it be

9:14 right now. nine people are recovering from injuries they received when they were crushed at a music festival in arizona. it happened during the summer end music festival in tempe. the band, revolution, was three songs into their set when the crowd rushed the stage. people couldn't breathe because of the rush of bodies, and two women went into convulsions.

two women were injured and all but three were hospitalized. security will be increased for tonight's closing show featuring kenye west. >> north bay neighbors concerned about their kids have a message for customers after busy -- customers of a busy convenience store. >> please, do not buy alcohol! >> yesterday protesters called for a boycott of the circle k in east san rafael. the group, youth for justice, has been asking circle k to remove sweetened energy drinks that contain a high percentage of alcohol. the protesters, some as young as 9 years old, say teenagers are the target market, even though they can't legally buy them. >> it's highly palatable for kids, and these are the drinks that are the transition drinks between soda and alcohol. >> abc7 news contacted circle k. they told us no comment. >> a viral protest on social media hit several bay area restaurants yesterday.

activists with the #dogmeatplease sent us this message. they posed as customers asking for dog meat. they say they do this to high light the hypocrisy of loving some animals while eating other. in a statement the slanted door said service was briefly jumped interrupted by a couple loudly proclaiming false acquisitions. and the security team did the best they could to diffuse the situation. exterminators will treat a library in berkeley that's been closed for the weekend because of bedbugs. abc7 news was at the north branch library as people found the doors locked and a notice about the closer. an art event scheduled for yesterday was cancelled. bedbugs were found in the downstairs men's restrooms,

under the desk of the public computer area and in a chair in the adult reading area. >> i'm sort of shocked. i don't know how bedbugs spread in a public building. i mean, i thought they were, hence the name bedbugs. >> what are you going to do now that you can't use the library? >> come back when it's open. the library is expected to reopen tuesday. community members are helping to raise money for a san francisco teacher whose daughter has a rare form of brain cancer. she has a series of tumors of that been fatal in every child case. we were at the elementary school yesterday for a fundraiser in her honer. her mom said the community has been supportive of her effort to any her to england for a medical trial. >> the survival rate is zero percent. and my daughter has it. many children are afflicted by it with no survival rate and there's been no progress on any of the research on this. >> mayor ed lee was there to support the family. a gofundme page has already

exhibit featuring the niners and the raiders. the five mile jog in stride is running through the area right now. it kicked off at 9:00. half-marathon will run through the downtown area. it kicks off at 8:00 a.m. as you see from the map there will be lots of road closers for much of the day and i'm sure the runners will want to know what the weather will be like. we see some clouds out there? >> yeah, but they are mixing in with the sun. it will be a nice second half to the weekend and a nice way to round out september as temperatures continue to cool bit by bit. of course, you notice the high clouds and with that we've had some really nice sun sets, evening skies and morning sunrise, being. but looking at the steady stream of subtropical moisture all the way down, geez, back towards hawaii. this will continue to move into the bay area today so we will call it partly cloudy. we will get in some sunshine but, of course, we have the eclipse tonight and the clouds will play a factor in it some of the veiled skies with the cirrus

tonight. we will see what we can see. the low clouds not much of a factor. the marine layer is very shallow. it will continue to mix out. it's 63 mountain view. san jose, you will be cooler today by about three degrees or four. half moon bay, it will be cool on the coast. this is emeryville. high clouds here and we will look for the cooling trend to continue into our inland east bay. yesterday about 90. a little better at the airport. concord, today a high in the upper 80s. about five degrees of cooling for you by the delta. 66 right now. pretty mild in livermore, a well it's 68 in santa rosa it's 70 degrees. we will look at another warm day well to the north. but nothing too extreme. and temperatures coming down toward below average readings by the middle of the week. cooler through wednesday. that should be the coolest day of the week. then we will warm up thursday, friday, into next weekend, and it looks like an offshore flow.

so it looks to be pretty dry right into the first weekend of october. here is what you can expect tonight. the total eclipse begins at 7:11. mid-eclipse 7:47. ends at 8:23 and the sun sets right before 7:00 tonight. you will definitely see it tonight. you have probably been seeing the moon the last last elf nights and it's been a pretty good show. try to check it out. much of california will see the clouds. southern half of our viewing area for sure and southern california and even the north bay. but nonetheless, it's an event not to be missed. high pressure is keeping us dry, but a cooler pattern will arrive tomorrow into wednesday as the upper level low drops to the south. that will enhance the onshore flow. the marine later becomes much more well-established and that's the source of our cooling. from pacifica today with the low clouds and mid-level clouds, 66, with a few peaks of sun in the south bay. 83 santa clara, 85 los gatos,

mid-level clouds around the bay here. do they have any rain associated with them? no. but they will certainly drift through the sky today and impact the viewing of the eclipse tonight. so the cooling comes really tomorrow. today san francisco stays about the same. we are looking at 50s and 60s for the most part, except for santa rosa. and we will see the mid-and upper 80s inland with some cooling down around gilroy, and temperatures in the next couple of days will begin to feel a lot more like fall. but we've got changes. with he will talk about those. and have a look at the eclipse timeline coming up. tiffany. >> lisa, thank you. as you might expect, there is a lot of setup going up for pope francis as he prepares to have an an air mass along the benjamin franklin parkway in philadelphia. the holy father will deliver mass to an estimated 1 million people at 1:00 our time. but the pope has already had a very busy morning.

he spoke privately to five victims of sexual abuse, and pledging that clergy would be held accountable. he went to a prison and spoke with inmates, keeping with his philosophy of keeping in touch with those on those on the marvn of society. he leaves today at 5:00 for romo. he called on americans to honor their ideals of liberty and equality. he talked at lent about immigration. abc7 news reporter sergio quintana has the bay area reaction. >> during his address at independence hall the pope spoke about immigration and to the spanish speaking immigrants recently arriving in the country he told them to hold on to their traditions. >> i ask you not to forget, like those who came here before you, you bring many gifts to this nation. poor and welcoming immigrants. it's a message many catholics in the bay area are happy to hear. >> and hopefully people will listen and open their hearts and look at the good side about it and not the bad side about it. >> when he talked about how the immigrants have built up this country and how we are all immigrants, and that we are a nation of nations, i think it sent a powerful reminder. >> but not everyone in the bay area agrees with what the pope is saying. >> if the pope and catholic church want illegal immigrants in this country, then they should look to feed, house, clothe and educate those people themselves based on donations. they shouldn't expect the american people to pay for it. >> steve supports republican donald trump's effort to put this issue back on the political spotlight. but he doesn't agree will all the billionaire candidates' proposals. so far the pope words have been the loudest contrast to a summer dominated by trump's mostly anti--immigrant message. abc7 news.

>> 9:40 right now. this is a live look from our roof cam pointed toward the bay bridge. you see the cloud cover. it will be a little hazy. about 70 degrees in san francisco today. we will let you know if the cloud cover will ruin your view of the super blood moon tonight. lisa argen will have the full forecast in in a couple of minutes. as california's drought continues, santa clara county wants residents to help keep an eye on dangerous and dry vegetation. the county has released a weed hazard reporting app. it can tell you what vegetation is dangerous and how to keep brush and grass safely trimmed. you can also report a weed hazard. it's as simple as opening the app, taking a picture and reporting the location. the app is available for apple and android devices.

sports both the raiders and the niners are on the road today. and this afternoon the niners will try to rebound in arizona against the undefeated cardinals. kickoff is at 1:05 p.m. also this afternoon, the a's will honor their big three pitchers from a decade ago, barry zito, tim hudson and mark mulder prior to the game against the giants. yesterday zito and hudson squared off for one final game. here's mike shumann with the highlights in this morning's sports. >> good morning. barry zito and tim hudson's careers have been intertwined throughout. they were teammates with the a's where barry won a cy young, both played with the a's

and giants, and both won a title with the g-men. yesterday they faced off in a farewell to arms. neither had a performance to remember. zito in trouble right from the getgo. top of one, a two-out, two-run double in marlon bird. giants take the lead. top of two. the rookie, jarrett parker, likes the long ball and he shows us just that. sending this barry zito offering packing. a solo blast. he had three on the day, including a grand slam and 7 rbi. giants would take the 4-0 lead. but huddy did all right. but in the second he appearance to lose control. he walked eric sogard and hit a third. zito's concern for his friend, as is martin mulder, the third man in the a's big three also at the game. hudsondy exits after an inning and a third he gets a great ovation from the crowd. zito would exit after walking the first man in the third. also getting a standing o. a bittersweet time for the one-time aces. but for the games after that. the bullpens are tired, and it

showed. giants win it. 14-10, the final. >> i came out of the dugout and couldn't believe i got to be on the field in an a's uniform and receive an ovation because, you know, when i had last pitched in the major leagues i thought there may be never another time on the field, let alone for the oakland a's. >> obviously things didn't work out the way i wanted them to with our performances, but the fans were awesome. they really showed their appreciation for what we've been able to do over the years. you know, i wish we could have done better, the both of us. that just wasn't the case today. >> what a great ending to their careers. the cal bears with their pac-12 opener against the huskies. teams start maturing when they win on the road. here we are ready to roll. second quarter. cal down 7-6. watch vick bounce off a couple guys like he's a pinball. love this guy.

the time right now just about 9:48. a beautiful sunrise with those clouds. but are they going to block the moon tonight? >> they will obscure it a little bit, yes. but it's such a rare' event you have to view it. you will see something spectacular out there. the high clouds over much of the bay area for the past several days. that continues. not much in the way of cooling because of the cloud cover. we still have a pretty warm atmosphere. but if we widen out the view you notice how far the clouds extend. the southwesterly winds will continue in the upper levels of the atmosphere to traject the cloud cover right over us. we will have a mix of high clouds and cirrus. those are the high clouds today with the sunshine. here's tropical storm which is producing very gusty winds and heavy rain for hilo and the big island. wind advisory with wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour and anywhere from 2 to 8 inches of rain for the big island tomorrow. here's a look at santa cruz

yesterday. in the 90s. today much, much cooler. high about 77. half moon bay 57. so it's cool. you will see numbers very typical of the beach. here locally in the 60s. and maybe about 70 point reyes. 64 morgan hill. you will be slightly cooler today. looking at numbers in the low 60s from mountain view to oakland. there are the high clouds. san francisco not much change today. right around around 7 and santa rosa very little wind and your temperature has come up quickly. 1 novato. and livermore today coming down just a few degrees. sutro shows the low cloud deck and the high clouds. the low clouds will continue to increase day-to-day. that will be one of the sourcefs our cooling for tomorrow and tuesday and wednesday. we will also look for that onshore flow and more in the way of some cloud cover. but a warmup begins as october arrives, and that will take us into a portion of the weekend. doesn't look like it's going to last all weekend. we aren't looking at one of

these huge warmups again. the earth casting a shadow over the moon tonight, and it all starts when the moon is visible just at about 6:50 tonight. the eclipse begins at 6:11 looking east. if you go to a higher elevation, that will be best. mid-eclipse 7:47 and it's over by about 8:23. so it should look a little reddish out there. it's not going to be totally dark, the moon. so you don't need any special binoculars or anything. it should be pretty cool. low pressure off the coast. stream of high and mid-level clouds. a dome of high pressure but also an upper level low that will be the source of further cooling, making it feel like fall tomorrow, tuesday and wednesday where temperatures will barely reach 80 in the east bay. the southern sierra cloudy and fog from salinas to monterey. we will be looking at livermore today to be pretty comfortable. upper 80s.
