there's a little bit of fog. we will check again in a few minutes. chris. >> thanks. now to developing news out of roseburg, oregon. a hospital in the city of springfield reports all three shooting victims taken there are expected to survive. two remain in critical condition, the other in fair condition. we still don't know why the suspect, chris harper-mercer opened fire; only that tip people died, including the gunman. we are live in roseburg with the latest. brandy, good morning to you. >> good morning to you,is. we know know the names of all nine people who were shot and killed. youyou see the growing memorials more witnesses come forward and describe the heroic efforts that were made here to try to save lives. >> surrounded by gunfire, sharon

tells a bp c news in an exclusive interview she tried saving her close friend, kim deitz. >> i did cpr and you could hear pop, pop in the other classrooms. >> but it was too late. >> i was just please, please, just breathe. >> she was among nine victims shot in roseburg, oregon. and there are more spores of heroism. >> he came back into the building and i don't know what happened to him. >> 30-year-old chris pulled. fire alarm while charging the shooter and survived seven gunshot wounds. >> he is day-to-day. he was shot two more times. investigator said the gunman, chris harper-mercer was enrolled in the class he targeted. witnesses said he asked the victims about his religion believes before firing. the sheriff is investigating whether the attack was motivate

bid religion. mercer was found with six guns and owned seven more, all purchased legally. >> whatever drove him to do it, i don't care. i care about the families that he's affected. >> and here are the memorials you can see the sign. it says "prays for russburg." so many americans are responding. there is a gofundme web page and already hundreds of thousands of dollars have been pouring in. a lot of that money coming in from strangers to help his recovery effort in the hospital. abc7 news. chris. >> brandy, if you have time, could you tell us more about the victims, who they were and how the community is remembering them? >> during a news conference yesterday, chris, they announced their names and many of the families statements. and we learned some of the folks were the sons and daughters of

local paramedics, local firefighters. four of the victim shot and killed were in their teenage years. the oldest was the pour. when you go to some of the businesses, i went to a restaurant last night, i met with a waitress and she said i know one of the victims, one injured. young girl who survived but lost her kidney during surgery. she's going to be okay. so you realize how small and a at this time knit community it is. everyone here is maybe one person away from knowing somebody else. pretty much you walk down the street in this town and you will run into somebody who knew one of the victims or new somebody here during the shooting rampage and it's really affected them. this community is devastated, chris. >> we really do appreciate you sharing that perspective. we will see you again in the next hour of our newscast. the community of roseburg is trying to do something it never paneled, processing a shooting

that took innocent people. with he have that part of the coverage. the roseburg indians were supposed to play a big football game at home against sheldon but it was not to be. no friday night lights. game cancelled. nothing to cheer about. >> no, nobody is cheering. our thoughts are all with the families. >> that has become a uniform refrain in this small city of 22,000 people. it's just large enough to disappear and just small enough that in times like this people band together. >> i just can't believe that such a horrible thing happened for no apparent reason. it's just senseless. >> you work hard and we don't want this kind of attention. >> now they have it, like it or not. roseburg did not want to become a symbol, but with much of the world's focus here, that's become unavoidable. frankly, those are questions roseburg does not want to answer right now.

internal investigations at the department. and there could be more. >> deputy ryan saunders is accused of illegally using a criminal data base. >> he had access for work-related issues but he used it for personal issues. >> no details were given on saunders case or the separate case of corrections officer martinez. he was arrested for work man's comp. he was really injured playing softball. >> these investigations were months in advance prior to that tragic incident. >> three other corrections deputies were arrested for the beating death of inmate michael tyree. another inmate, michael roaches, died a week after he was forcibly extracted from his cell. and the department confirms three more deputies are being investigated for undisclosed vials. a total of 8 deputies are on administrative leave. >> there's an appearance that there's something wrong with the

the attacker ran off when the boy's mother found out what happened and called for help. they believe the attacker is a white man, 28 to 32 years old. he stands about 5'8". also this morning, an alert about san francisco state university students and employees. a woman claims a man attacked her inside a classroom building there. she told campus police the man spoke with her as she walked along a path and followed her into the lobby of burke haul and assaulted her open wednesday evening. the woman was then able to get away. the widow of robin williams and his children have settled their legal fight over his estate. yesterday's announcement follows bickering over millions of dollars worth of items like his awards and his bicycle collection. both sides also disputed the value of a reserve fund that would let susan williams live in the couple's home. robin williams committed suicide in august of last year. more help is on the way this morning for people displaced by the valley and butte fires.

governor brown has issued an executive order. this decision will speed up the approval process to set up temporary mobile home parks in both lake counties. combined both fires destroyed more than 1700 homes. a fundraiser that we reported earlier this week for victims of the valley fire raised nearly $100,000. the money was raised by three napa valley wineries, alpha omega, estates vineyard and winery and one other. organizers said 300 people attended the fundraiser. two lake county based organizations will receive the proceeds. the valley fire has burned more than 76,000 acres, and is 97% contained. 5:10 is our time. weather-wise, finally starting to see the cool-down in the bay

forecasters believe hurricane joaquin's path will shift and not directly hit the united states. it hit the bahamas yesterday, ripping off roofs, downed trees and flooding reported. east coast is getting drenched by rain but forecasters say the category 3 hurricane should weaken later today. as that storm wears through, the search for a missing american cargo shift traveling from florida to san juan has resumed. 33 people are on board, including 28 americans. abc news reporter tells us the coast guard is now battling 20-foot waves to find them. >> the u.s. coast guard over choppy waters in the bahamas trying to locate this american cargo shift, the el faro. as 130 miles an hour winds rock the coast. >> it's disabled right near the eye of hurricane joaquin. >> with 33 people on board, 28 of them american, the el faro

san mateo, melanie woodrow, abc7 news. former vice president al gore joined stanford students in calling for action toss slow global warming last night. gore believes students everywhere can play a key role in fighting climate change. activists want universities to divest from companies involved in fossil fuel. gore made his points by talking about problems we face in california. >> we have to change. just look at what is happening in this state of california. 97% of the state is in drought, a five-year drought. almost that of the state is in the most extreme form of drought, called exceptional drought. >> many of the students at last night's rally want gore to run for president again. when asked about his plans at a forum in washington, d.c. on thursday gore said he didn't know if he would or would not run. >> 5:19 the time. snow in yosemite. as far as we know this is the

first snow of the season. but when driving up on detroit road, they snapped this picture on thursday. it's possible it could snow even more this weekend. meteorologist lisa argen is here now with a look at the forecast. do you believe it's already time to talk about snow again? >> yeah, i have some tweets about that. very exciting. we have an area of low pressure headed our way today. not only dropping the temperatures, picking up the winds and the possibility of some showers exist by later on this evening. so live doppler 7hd, the sun coming up at 7:07, setting at 6:50. not a lot of cloud cover to detect here. but there is some right up by the airport. otherwise we're looking at this system here. you can sort of see the circular defined area from the clouds. and that's the upper level low that will drop down and bring us the cooler weather. but we want to get you updated on joaquin. the good news is it's pulling away from the bahamas and taking

the torrential rain with it. this was the preferred track away from the carolinas. but they picked up a lot of rain and this continues to move out to sea and weaken. certainly some good news. we wish we could get some rain back here. dry as a bone later on today as relative humidity drops below 20%. with those dry, northeasterly winds. we have that to look forward to unfortunately. 57 in mountain view. 57 in san jose, 52 morgan hill. half moon bay checking in at 55 degrees. a look outside from the exploratorium camera and low 50s santa rosa and napa. 46 novato. that time of year it cools quickly. we are radiational cooling and the dewpoints are low. things will really dry out today with the north, northeasterly winds. the wind advisory highlighted with the red flag warning from 6:00 tonight. the winds will get breezy throughout the afternoon. it should be down right windy in parts of the coast. above 1,000 feet, that's where

we have the red flag warning. napa, sonoma, marijuana, contra costa county and even almeda county and the possibility of rapid fire growth with wind gusts up to 40 and 50 miles an hour. now common winds could be anywhere from 20 to 35 miles an hour. pretty much a breezy evening into tomorrow. and by tonight is when we could see just a slight chance of a shower really around monterey, san benito county and the south bay. they really made out good a couple days ago with about .4 around gilroy. we look for the isolated shower earlier saturday night into sunday. and the culprit we pointed out, you can see it. this system is the one that brought that rain to the south bay. yet another one diving down the coast. and as it heads a little bit closer to the coastline it's going to wrap around and bring a little built of moisture our way. just a slight chance of a shower. but today sunny, 77 for san jose. 76 in santa clara. on the peninsula it will be cooler today, 72 redwood city.

american toes ares conducted an airstrike against individual threatening. he said the strike may have resulted in collateral damage. the incident is under investigation. turning now to the oregon school shooting. authorities in roseburg publicly identified the nine victims who lost their lives on thursday at umpqua community college. among them a writing professor, an 18-year-old student only four days at the college. a 33-year-old former drug addict and a quadruplets. the school itself will be closed. we are learning more details about chris harper-mercer. he served time in the u.s. army but never made it past basic training. he was enrolled in the english class he targeted. harper-mercer left behind writings showing he identified

gunmen of previous massacres. survivors are talking about the selfless action of army veteran chris mentz. he blocked his classroom door and told the gunman you aren't getting by me. the gunman shot him seven times, hitting his hand, back, stomach and legs. a he is laid on the ground he told the gunman's it's my son's birthday. his son turned six on. the shots hit all of his major against but el faro have to learn to walk again. the gofundme raised money to help him recover. some came together to learn and targeted in a class they shared with the shooter. katie tells us more about them. >> some just starting out. only four days into college. quinn cooper was 18. funny, sweet and compassion national. his family says they are shattered beyond repair.

18-year-old rebecca karnes of myrtl creek was all smiles in her face book pictures. one volunteered as a local animal shielder. a 19-year-old, honor student attending the college on a scholarship she earned. her sister rights i never got to tell you how proud of you i was. the son of a local firefighter. a 20-year-old was from sutherland, oregon. and a 67-year-old larry was a professor of english from oregon. other students starting over. 34-year-old jason johnson recently enrolled after completing a rehab program. one that is not lost on his cousin. >> it's supposed to be the other way around. everything goes bad when you do the wrong thing and when you do the right thing you learn

>> the city of palo alto is taking immediate steps to save it's tree-lined streets. trees are dying in previous numbers than previous years. city leaders said they removed 400 trees this year. it's the first time the number topped 1% of the total trees in the city. most years fewer than 250 trees are removed. crews are delivering more water while staying within state guidelines. this he have to pick and choose which are most important to maintain. they say it will take decades to replace the trees the city has already lost. this is a growing problem across the bay area that many cities are facing. >> and because of the drought-stricken trees, the dry roots and the high winds today, some of those could be coming down late tonight into tomorrow. we have a wind advisory. winds could gust up to 50 miles an hour. but all is calm, san jose with 57 degrees. a high just in the low 70s. the cooler, windier weather we

the coast of california that will bring some very changeable weather today. cooler conditions by as muchs 8 to 11 degrees. upper 50s from mountain view. 51 morgan hill. 55 half moon bay and it's 58 in san francisco. a lack from our exploratorium camera. pretty calm out there right now with low 50s from santa rosa, napa to novato and upper 50s by the delta. 56 in concord. here'sed red flag warning for elevations above 1,000 pete from 6 tonight to 10:00 in the morning. wind gusts 40 to 50 miles an hour. we could see humidity dropping below 20%. in the lower elevations it will be breezy, as well. this will take us right on through sunday. here's the forecast of wind profile from 2from this around. you can see from point reyes, 36 miles an hour winds. the upper elevations of napa county it will be breezy, as well. as we go through the afternoon you notice they crank up to 20 miles an hour around half moon bay. and they will continue through

the overnight hours. so definitely keep that in mind if you are headed up in elevation for a bike ride. you will certainly notice that. and dry, dry condition out there. sunny and cooler today. gusty winds, a slight chance of a shower tonight mainly from san francisco south and a fallish week ahead with temperatures a the warmer tomorrow. then we will bring it down a bit. there's the upper level low. it continues to drop to the south w it it pick up some of the moisture off the ocean. we could see a slight chance of a shower, maybe showers in southern california, and upper elevations. snow is a possibility in the sierra nevada. so we are looking at the partly cloudy conditions from monterey through southern california. 82 in l.a. with 68 in the northern sierra. and look at that, 84 in sacramento. so you know it's going to be much cooler around here with mainly 60s and 70s today. so if you are spending anytime at golden gate park, hardly strictly bluegrass festival,

filled with banjo music, it must be that time of year again >> it's the best festival in the world. it's incredible. for those lucky enough, it's the perfect day to play hooky. >> a day in october you can't beat. >> some know from experience. it's their 11th year from playing here, this time for a crowd of kids allowed to cut class. they are playing their bluegrass instrument being, but not the traditional tunes. they want to send kids a message. >> with modern technology, cell phones, and people are so connected to their devices that we cap show kids that you can pick up a guitar, a fiddle, a banjo, make some noise and you can get really a lot of joy out of it. it's the joy the philanthropist wanted to spread when he started the festival. i think he wanted to create the utopia and have the base be bluegrass music because it's such a tradition. >> back then it was strictly
