we begin with the killer storm swamping south carolina, still parked over the state after triggering catastrophic flooding. >> scenes like this, take a look, playing out over and over again. hundreds of people plucked to safety from submerged cars and trucks. after some areas got slammed with more than two feet of rain. those raging floodwaters blamed for at least seven deaths. powerful enough to unearth coffins, bringing them to the surface at this church cemetery. >> we want to give you a look at the storm system on radar. it's dumping lots of rain in the carolinas right now. abc's lana zak has the latest. >> reporter: scenes like these ravaging south carolina this morning. >> this is an unprecedented event. >> reporter: grown men in water up to their necks. these floods at rooftop level. some residents losing everything. >> everything that i own, that i know of, has been destroyed. all my memories. everything that i've worked for. it's all gone. >> reporter: as onlookers hope the floods will stay away from them.

>> the water is getting closer and closer. >> reporter: after government-imposed curfews, residents in eight south carolina counties are waking up to scenes of destruction today. >> we haven't seen this level of rain in the low country in 1,000 years. that's how big this is. >> reporter: officials warning residents the flash floods are expected to continue and may come on suddenly. >> just because the rain stops does not mean the danger is over. >> reporter: this road one of many collapsing under the strain. even some rescue workers in need of rescue. >> we had a mother and her child stranded. a recuse worker tried to get to them, he got stranded. and so we used an aero rescue to go get all of them. and then started picking some people off rooftops. >> reporter: several deaths caused by the rushing water. this resident says she got out just in time. >> i was scared we couldn't get the car out. i started on foot. i thought we were going to die. >> reporter: lana zak, abc news, washington. >> as some of the rivers reached the highest levels in decades, president obama has declared a state of emergency in south

carolina. >> as another half foot of rain comes down today. accuweather meteorologist paul williams has more on the miserable conditions ahead. paul, good morning. >> thanks, kendis, reena. we have record-setting numbers. being recorded in columbia, as well as charleston. and in boone hill plantation, they have already recorded 24 inches of rain and still counting. why? we have a trough. that brings a little rain. a low pressure system. on this side of the equator typically brings in rain. and you add tropical moisture. we're talking about just three rainmakers triple-teaming on top of south carolina. and it will continue to be the case as we go into today. rescue efforts still ongoing. kendis? reena? >> absolutely nonstop there in the low country. paul, thank you. hurricane joaquin has spared the east coast. but it made a beeline for bermuda before veering out to sea. it's no longer a category 5 storm. but still packing damaging winds. the main harbors got battered overnight as tourists and residents braced for nearly a half foot of rain and a

dangerous storm surge, as well. the search continues for a u.s. cargo ship that vanished in hurricane joaquin. with 33 people on board. the coast guard found a large debris field while scouring more than 70,000 square nautical miles. even finding one life ring from the ship. the "el faro" was headed to puerto rico from florida. its last communication, a distress call thursday saying the ship had lost power and was taking on water. the pentagon is investigating an apparent u.s. air strike that killed at least 22 people at a hospital in afghanistan. the group doctors without borders ran the facility. it's calling the attack a war crime and has decided to leave the city. u.s. officials do say a c-130 gun ship was in the kunduz area at the time supporting american and afghan special operations forces that had come under fire. and breaking news overnight. a u.s. college student being held by north korea is now free.

won-moon joo, was handed over at the border. he attended new york yufrt and was arrested for crossing the border illegally. he was seen in this video telling his parents he was held thi. back here in the states, classes are canceled this week at the oregon community college where eight students and a teacher were killed. those who survived the shooting rampage are starting to reveal details of their ordeal. one who played dead. the other called the lucky one. here's abc's neal karlinsky. >> reporter: pastor randy scroggins' prayers were answered. even before he stepped into church. >> she said, daddy, number one, i began to pray. secondly, i knew i was going to die today. >> reporter: his 18-year-old daughter, lacey, one of the closest witnesses to survive the gunman's rampage unscathed, saved by 20-year-old treven anspach, who fell on top of her after he was shot, later dying. >> i believe in the last moments that he had any conscious whatsoever, i believe he said,

i'm going to roll on to lacey. >> reporter: she lied under him, playing dead. amazingly, sitting next to lacey in church, this man. the student they say was chosen directly by the gunman to live. >> and said you're the lucky one. you're not going to die today. >> reporter: meanwhile, chris mintz, hailed a hero by survivors and shot seven times, released this video. >> hello, everyone. i'm doing well. and i'm overwhelmed by the support that i've gotten from everybody. >> reporter: neal karlinsky, abc news, roseburg, oregon. >> our thanks to neal karlinsky, who also spoke exclusively to a young woman who survived. 18-year-old ana boylan spoke about the nine-minute ordeal. as she heard others being shot. she said the shooter asked each person their religion, and then shot them, saying the paint would only last a moment, and then they would be with god. >> i could hear everyone breathing hard and freaking out and crying. he asked everyone to move to the center of the classroom.

the public's help in identifying the armed attacker seen here in this surveillance video. the victim opened his garage door to take out the trash when the man in gray barges in and tries to overpower him. in the fierce fight that follows, the victim eventually wrestles the gun away and points it at the attacker as he runs away. a teenager in florida is recovering this morning after being attacked by a shark. it happened on new smyrna beach. while a group of friends were surfing yesterday. the 14-year-old was bitten on the hand. we've blurred photos of his injury. one of the injured boy's friends recalled the moment when he found out what had happened. >> when he was paddling in, i thought he was just coming to get us and stuff. and then, his hand was all red. he was screaming for help. >> the boy who was attacked underwent surgery at a hospital. witnesses say he actually punched the shark away from him. the seattle seahawks host the detroit lions tonight on "monday night football." and ten major league

matt? >> yes, officers are still on the scene investigating the indent that took place around midnight. this is a narrow road. you can understand why a person would have trouble drive out of this road. it ended up with an officer hit by a vehicle. also, striking another patrol vehicle this is what we know: san francisco police department got a careful an auto burglary at midnight. the officer arrive asked got out of the car to investigate. a person in a vehicle tried to drive away and ended up hitting the officer and pinning him again the vehicle. another police unit arrived and the burglar hit the second vehicle and could not escape and was arrested. the injured officer was taken to the hospital with possible broke were ribs and a leg injury. he is stable and two suspects were detained. police are not looking for anyone else. we will stay on the scene as the investigation continues and bring you
