right up the coast. >> the storm being blamed for at least seven deaths. hundreds of people rescued from the raging water. president obama signed an emergency declaration, freeing up aid for south carolina. we have full team coverage. rob marciano is in charleston, south carolina. good morning. >> good morning. the rain has stopped at least for now. but it has been four days of record shattering rain across this state and the city of charleston. these streets are still flooded. the city still shut down. the entire state still reeling from the devastating floods. this morning, south carolina under siege. >> this is an unprecedented event. >> reporter: relentless rain. pounding some areas with more than two feet. in just four days. this morning an additional five inches possible along the coast. more flash flooding and major concern. >> we haven't seen this level of rain in the low country in 1,000 years. that's how big this is. >> reporter: hundreds of

evacuations. nearly 30,000 without power. officials activating 600 members of the national guard. as rivers reached their highest level in decades. this high school football field looking like a stadium pool. the conditions fatal, with at least seven deaths so far across the carolinas believed to be related to the storm. drones capturing the swollen roads from above. nearly 75 miles of i-95 shut down in both directions. at least 300 weather related accidents on sunday alone. officials urging residents to stay off the roads. in columbia, watch as one man loses control of his pickup. a good samaritan wading out to rescue him. kicking out the back window and staying with the driver until crews could arrive. trained rescuers not even safe. >> we've had a west columbia firefighter swept away. they've lost visual contact. >> reporter: not one, but two firefighters swept away. both okay now. >> we've recovered our firefighter. he's in the truck with me.

he's a little cold, a little scratched up. >> hell, yeah! >> reporter: the coast guard saving a family trapped in their home, lifting mom and her 15-month-old daughter to higher ground. >> probably the most terrifying moment of my life. especially holding on to my 15-month-old daughter. that far up was incredibly frightening. but we made it. >> reporter: that family, the muellers, very much shaken. very much relieved when i spoke to them last night. they have to stay in the hotel another three, four days. unsure if they have a home to go back to. there are a lot of flood victims that share that same anxiety this morning. >> we go a couple miles -- hours inland to columbia, south carolina. you saw the flooding there, as well. alex perez is there. good morning, alex. >> reporter: hey, good morning, george. many are waking up to scenes like this one. there's a creek somewhere back here. so much water, you can't tell where the creek ends and the neighborhood begins. this morning, in columbia, residents waking up to scenes of

total devastation. >> everything that i own has been destroyed. >> reporter: people wading across streets to see what's left in their home. that's a bed frame wrapped in that tree. >> i've been here since 1986. i have never seen anything like this in columbia, south carolina. >> reporter: this man using his own boat to help with rescues. >> i was stomping on the roof and listening to see if anybody thumped back. we found a note that said we're in the attic. >> reporter: officials warning be prepared to be without drinking water for days after water mains broke. reeking havoc on the city's sewage system. >> it's hard. everything. my car. my pictures. >> reporter: overnight, we caught up with kelly, who grabbed anything and everything she could, as water came rushing in. >> i was throwing stuff on beds to try to, like, save stuff. >> reporter: the water pouring in so fast, nearly covering her. she'll spend today salvaging

what she can. >> with the holidays coming up, it will be sad. >> reporter: there's a boil order here. the floodwaters in some of the most inundated areas have already started receding. amy? >> good news, alex. this is once in a generation storm. record rain. more than two feet in some areas. ginger, unfortunately, even though we heard the bit of good news, it's not over yet. >> we have about 24 hours more to deal with. the rain still making it from north carolina into south carolina. flash flood warnings. imminent danger from wilmington to charleston. you can see the next 24 hours. it takes us to noon tomorrow when we finally see things drying out. i would love to tell you the dangers end there but the rivers still rise. they still crest and flow over. by the end of the week is when we can really say, ah, things have cleared up. you can still see a lot of the wildlife coming through as the floodwaters, too. snakes, alligators, all

something to watch for. how did this happen? why? there's a low system stuck in place, grabbing the tropical moisture. sending south carolina and north carolina a lot of moisture. totally separate from the bermuda storm. joaquin. everybody got confused thinking the rain had made it there. no. it's racing off toward europe. that is what we're tracking. we'll have more coming up. we turn to the desperate search for a cargo ship that vanished in the bahamas on thursday with 33 people on board. that ship got caught in hurricane joaquin. look at the storm at its peak. a category 4 storm at its peak. winds topping 150 miles an hour. linzie janis has the latest from miami. good morning, linzie. >> reporter: good morning, george. the ship was going from jacksonville to puerto rico. this morning, many families of the crew wondering why it ended up in the middle of the hurricane. the company that owns the "el faro" saying the captain was very experienced and wouldn't put the crew at risk.

whatever the reason, right now the search is on for survivors. this morning, exclusive video inside the desperate search for the crew of the "el faro." abc news flying with the coast guard. sunday, rescuers honing in on a 225-mile stretch. >> we found there was thousands of pieces of debris. >> reporter: the coast guard also uncovering a container and oil sheen believed to be from the vanished cargo ship. and this life ring confirmed to be from the "el faro." the multiagency search for the 33 missing crew members now spanning 70,000 square nautical miles. roughly the size of michigan. on board the vessel, 28 americans, 5 poles, 391 containers carrying about 300 trailers and cars. the crew sending a distress signal at 7:20 a.m. thursday morning. at the time, it was near crooked island in the bahamas. part of the bermuda triangle and

in shark-infested waters. the family and friends holding on to hope. >> because these men are trained to survive. hopefully they did what was needed to survive. >> reporter: increasing their chances of survival, 80-degree tropic waters. and immersion suits like this one. seen in this video. dubbed gumby suits, they're buoyant. they keep the users face-up above the water. and tote maritime, the company that owns the ship, confident in the captain. >> he was highly competent, qualified, a master, by all accounts. >> reporter: overnight, family and friends of the crew held a prayer vigil in jacksonville. that is where the crew are from. waiting for more detail from the coast guard. amy. >> thank you, linzie. and now to the bombing of a

hospital in afghanistan that's killed 22 people, including 12 staff members. the humanitarian organization doctors without borders outraged, blaming the u.s., calling the air strike a war crime. and demanding an independent investigation. martha raddatz has the latest from washington. >> good morning, amy. just a short time ago general john campbell who was in charge of forces in afghanistan said this was afghan troops, not americans who were under fire and called in a u.s. air strike. but several major questions remain. how close were the afghan troops to the hospital and was there any other way to get help without an air strike? general campbell said this morning a hospital is certainly not a target that the u.s. would go after. so who approved that u.s. air strike? and why didn't they know that a hospital was there? doctors without borders say that the doctors had given the

coordinates at the hospital to the u.s. military over and over again. amy? >> a tragic situation. thank you, martha. the race for president. >> reporter: on a serious note, today clinton rolls out the plan to expand gun control laws. this is in the wake of the oregon campus shooting. she wants to tighten background checks and increase liability for gun manufacturers. gun control is one of the rare issues she is different to the left of bernie sanders. >> let's bring in jon karl. the latest polls show hillary ahead in iowa. behind in new hampshire. what a critical month shaping up. especially the x factor. what is joe biden going to do? >> reporter: that's the big question. sources close to vice president biden say he's likely to clearly signal his intentions by early next week. whether or not he's going to be in this race. he is not going to be on the debate stage next week. but before those other democrats take the debate stage next week, i'm told biden will make a decision, and clearly signal

that he's in or out. those close to biden say they believe he's leaning towards running. >> okay. on the republican side, i spoke with donald trump yesterday. he's still ahead in iowa and new hampshire. the polls closing a bit. he gave some hints about what he might do if things go south. >> winning everything. winning every state, winning every national poll, and a big lead. if that changed and that went in a different direction, and if i thought that i wasn't going to win, i would certainly want to get out. i'm not a masochist. if i thought i was doing poorly, i would want to do that. >> he's still ahead. there's no coalescing around any of the alternatives. >> no. it's interesting to hear him talking about the possibility of not winning and getting out of the race. look, if you look at the most recent polls. in new hampshire, only five points ahead of carly fiorina. in iowa, only five points ahead of ben carson.

now to the happy homecoming. a toddler back with her family after a massive two-day search. after she wandered out of her great-grandparents' home. reena ninan has our story. >> 911, where is your emergency? >> hey, i found baby rainn, and she's alive. >> reporter: this morning, a happy ending to a harrowing two-day ordeal for the family of rainn peterson. >> hi, baby. stay still. >> is she okay? >> she's got flies all over her. but she's okay.

>> reporter: this photo capturing the moment of relief. as the 2-year-old is found alive just over half a mile from where she first disappeared after a massive weekend search. the toddler's great-grandparents reporting her missing around 7:30 friday evening. telling police she wandered out of their ohio home where she lives with two other siblings. her worried family pleading for her safe return. >> it's the worst feeling in the world. >> reporter: and just before nightfall sunday, a volunteer on a four-wheeler spotted a child sleeping in tall grass and called 911. [ crying ] >> hi, baby. hi, baby. >> reporter: both caller and operator stunned. >> you're okay, sweetheart. i swear you're going to be okay. >> is she -- is that her i hear? >> she's just crying. >> okay, i hear her. oh, i just got goose bumps. >> oh, my god, me, too. i couldn't give up on this kid.

why some baseball fans are saying taylor swift is trouble. jesse, you'll have more. >> is there such a thing as a taylor swift curse? there's a lot of superstitious baseball fans who think so. we'll tell you why coming up in our "speed feed" just ahead. we begin with an abc exclusive. one of the students who survived the oregon college shooting tells her terrifying story. explaining how she made it out alive and what she heard from the killer. neal karlinsky is in roseburg with the story. good morning, neal. >> reporter: george, good morning. investigators learned a lot of information this weekend. including that the gunman took his own life. much of what they know is from eyewitnesses. like the woman you're about to meet. she is a marketing student. her second day of college ever. she was shot in the back when her gunman stormed in. she says she played dead to survive. this is her remarkable story.

>> i could just -- i could hear everyone breathing hard and freaking out. and crying. and -- he -- he asked everyone to move to the center of the classroom. so we all kind of just like, army-crawled to the center. >> reporter: to say that 18-year-old anastasia boylan feels lucky to be alive doesn't do justice to how overwhelmed she feels to be here. you're thinking you might not make it out of the room? >> i didn't. i didn't think i was going to make it. the last thing i remember praying was that my family and my loved ones and that the family and loved ones of my peers would somehow know that we're all okay. >> reporter: from her wheelchair inside the oregon hospital that helped save her from a gunshot wound to the back, she recounted the nine minutes of hell inside umpqua community college last

thursday when chris mercer opened fire. she said the gunman even spoke to them. >> he sounded really deranged because he said he had been waiting to do that for a very long time. he laughed. >> reporter: he laughed? >> he laughed after he shot the teacher. >> reporter: she says he picked out one student specifically to be the one who would live to tell the tale. >> he said, the kid in the glasses, get up. i need you to do me a favor. today's your lucky day. and hands him this, like, business envelope. because, he wasn't going to be able to do that after he was done killing the rest of us and he said he was going to kill himself. >> reporter: she says he had a question for each of his victims. >> he had us get up -- one by one, and asked us what our religions were. >> reporter: when the student said his religion, he was shot? >> yeah.

the shooter said that, um, he -- would only feel the pain for a couple of seconds. and that he would be with god soon. and then he shot him. >> reporter: she played dead as he called out to her and kept her eyes shut. and then, it was over. >> all of a sudden, i heard that one kid in my class say that he was dead. he's dead. he's shot in the head. everything's okay. >> reporter: you made it. you're safe. >> i will never, ever take for granted a second, a minute, an hour, a day. ever again. >> reporter: such a strong woman. she still has some numbness from the gunshot near her spine. she expects to make a full recovery. >> our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the roseburg community. we move on to an urgent manhunt in dallas. a woman who allegedly masterminded a murder for hire.

paying to have her romantic rival, a popular dentist, killed. ryan owens has that story. >> reporter: she might just be the most wanted woman in dallas this morning. 33-year-old brenda delgado, who police say plotted the execution of her romantic rival, dr. kendra hatcher. >> she's a fugitive. wanted at this point for capital murder. >> reporter: delgado, seemingly a woman scorned. her dermatologist ex-boyfriend, seen in this facebook post with his new girlfriend, the popular pediatric dentist delgado allegedly targeted. search warrants claim delgado stalked her ex's new love. even using an iphone to track her movements on the night she was shot to death. in the parking garage of hur dallas high-rise last month. >> one female possibly shot in the neck. >> reporter: on friday, police finally tracked down the alleged triggerman, 31-year-old kristopher love. who detectives say still had the

this morning, the potential dangers of the keyless ignition systems. investigators have linked 12 deaths from carbon monoxide poisoning. when owners walked away and left their cars running. an estimated 5 million keyless vehicles don't have an automatic shutoff. that could put you and your family at risk. alex perez has our story. >> we're going to mask up on the floor. >> reporter: firefighters with masks and safety gear approaching a garage with deadly levels of carbon monoxide from the exhaust of a car kept running. a frightening demonstration but in real life it can have tragic results. cesare loved to stop by his parents' house to share an espresso. in june, this ritual shattered. to walk in and have to deal with it, see that. >> it's etched into your brain for the rest of your life. >> reporter: speaking out about the moment he found both his

serious consequences. abc's reena ninan explains. >> reporter: it's something all teens love. staying up late. this morning, a new study from u.c. berkeley finds that if your teen goes to bed late, they're at a higher risk to gain weight. >> this is the first study of its kind to look at the relationship between bedtimes and weight gain. above and beyond sloou -- sleep duration. >> reporter: more than 3,000 people were studied. over 60% of young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 went to be past 11:00 p.m. >> that late bed time was associated with an increase in weight gain that correlates to a 2.1 unit increase in body-mass index over that period. >> reporter: so what exactly does that mean? on average, a 5'5" female teen who weighs 132 pounds and goes to bed late during the period from adolescent to adulthood will gain approximately 12 pounds. >> at 11:00 or 12:00 at night,

in a new survey, 87% of moms say they feel judged for how they parent. and raised their kids. 35% of moms feel judged for baby feeding style. 48% for working status. 53% because of discipline methods. a surprising finding. 50% of mothers said it's okay to spank. and while modern moms may feel harshly judged by their peers, 86% who responded to the survey say they try not to judge other parents. they believe there is no one right way to approach motherhood. here with me, lindsey powers, is this something specific to millennial moms. gen x moms. is it singular to these generations? >> we have surveyed more than 1,000 moms. on yahoo! parenting. we see that it is actually growing. with facebook, you know, you're no longer comparing yourself to your parents and neighbors. you're comparing yourself to

every person you have ever met. and we have seen three major things parents are sensitive about. discipline, their working status, and the behavior of their kids in public. 1 in 2 moms are judged about that. >> i thought it was a new york thing. people saying what they think. apparently, it's a nationwide thing. the survey didn't focus on shaming. you found out what people feel about discipline and divorce. >> we found 50% of moms are okay with spanking. and a mom that we spoke to said her husband supports it more. it's something she'll do if her kid is in a dangerous situation. >> that's a surprising number. given what we have heard from other surveys. >> it's an old-fashioned thing to do. to spank your child. parents are embracing it. it's a good way to catch your child's attention, if you need to break 'em out of something. 25% of parents said that they do think about divorce every once in awhile. more than 40% said, no way divorce is not an option. so i think in light of statistics about the huge

divorce numbers, we're really seeing less of it. >> interesting. >> in co-parenting, even if the relationship doesn't work out, parents have a great relationship. it's the end of acrimonious divorces. >> that's nice to hear. stopping the trend is recognizing the behavior and telling yourself i'm not going to judge. >> take three deep breaths. how would you feel if someone was saying the same thing about you. another thing is, you know, don't be afraid to weigh in on facebook. people are going out on a limb and sharing things. we're all in this together. and lastly, the no-shame parenting, own your choices. be proud of them. this works for your family. it's an awesome thing. >> everyone has their own advice. you shouldn't necessarily worry about what other people are saying. i was reminding myself there. did you hear that? check out yahoo! parenting all week for more on no-shame parenting. george? >> isn't amy great mom? >> yep.

ashton. the technique does look amazing. what causes cellulite in the first place? >> if you look at normal skin under the surface, there are these dense fibrous bands of tissue. they separate the subcutaneous fat areas. then you have the dermis and the epidermis. you can see in this case it's smooth. when you look at celluite, you'll see a tightening of the bands. it causes the dimpling. you have the expansion. a laxity or loosening causing the cottage cheese surface we see. >> it's a perfect storm of things that have to happen. >> absolutely. >> so, let's talk about the common myths. fact or myth. first of all, over-the-counter remedies, do they work? many of us have bought in. >> don't shoot the messenger but the official answer is, it's fiction.

in terms of a cure, they largely don't work. look over here at the mattress. >> which is the greatest prop ever. >> thank you, thank you. my producer and i thought this up. the superficial creams are hitting the surface. the epidermis is where you see the puckering. they barely penetrate the dermis. they don't hit the fibrous brands. caffeine creams can stimulate the breakdown. if you use rettinol it could -- >> so retinol and caffeine may be more of an effect. does exercise have an effect on cellulite. >> i'll never say exercise is bad. is it going to cure it, not really. it will shrink this fat and build muscle. it will smooth out the surface a little bit.

i thought it was good to write. it's about me and my cousin barry. all the trouble we got into. we learned how to face our troubles and move on. >> the series of sboox based loosely on your life. i'm sure you had a colorful life. how do you pick which stories to highlight? >> there's a lesson to each one. i just sat back and reminisced about when i was a child. i just picked the stories that i see fit. this first book, the first three chapters, they're very inspiring stories. it's fun. >> you are inspiring. your a father of six. ages 19 to 9? >> yes. 19 to 9, three boys, three girls. >> what is a day in the life of that? >> it's fun. they see me as dad, rather than shaq. when they were young, our favorite game was dog man. i came to the house, acted like a wild dog, chased them around

the house. they're too old for that. i have two in college. i got one that's a basketball phenom. and i got a little daughter that's an excellent basketball player. a son they call my twin. so it's fun. >> proud dad of six. a lot of people may not know this, i should have called you dr. o'neal. you have your ph.d. in education. >> yes. >> did that come in handy when writing the books? >> yes. i have to thank my beautiful mom for that. mommy, i love you. hello. she encouraged me to go back to school. i encouraged her to go back to school. she received her masters. she said, we don't have any doctors in the family. so i became the first doctor in our family. >> all right. dr. o'neal from now on. we're going to play the buzzer beater. you have few questioseconds to . if you were never in the nba, what would you do?

and then, now we're going to take some cilantro first. and we're going to take this pepper sauce and we're going to baste it like this. and what we do, 375 degrees. we're going to roast this. and this is -- what you want to do is do this a day before and let it marinate. in a zipped bag or plastic wrap. and you want to roast this until it's like 140, 145 degrees. >> all the way through. >> with roasted potatoes. i do oil, salt, and person, toss them, do it with the pork roast. roast it in the oven. this is what it looked like. >> can't do better than that. >> this is a dish a tribute to my friend, mario batali. this is basically, it's a car n
