accounts of the day match those of banks and martinez. >> then, they opened other rooms, multiple deputies, no d dad -- badges. they beat this individual so badly that he lost control of his bowels. they stripped him naked and locked him in an isolation room covered in his own feces for two days. >> reporter: swieger believes there is a pattern of abuse at the jail. >> many inmates says please, help us this, is not the first time. >> reporter: the inmates say a lieutenant and supervising deputy was in control. >> this is a bad tree. >> reporter: the inmates say beatings lasted five and a half

hours. and there should be video of whatever happened. the attorney says jail policy requires deputies to record all forced cell extractions. the sheriff's office did not respond to our request for comments. a man died after his car plunged 40 feet down an enbankment. you can see the gray toyota tundra, crushed and on its side. the driver of the other truck was not hurt. terminally ill patients in california have a choice in how they want to die. california has become the fifth right to die state in the nation. the governor signed the controversial bill into law today and lyanne is in berkeley

been so nice if she'd passed peacefully seven days earlier without going through seven days of hellish coma. >> medical practice often mistakenly diagnoses people incorrectly of having a terminal illness. >> reporter: a terminally ill patient could wo have to make two oral requests followed by a written one and a second physician must also approve it. a southern california woman who doctors say has just months to live says the governor's decision to pass the bill is a huge victory. >> the fact that other people in to the future are not going to have to suffer painfully, i think all of those people this, is going to mean the world. if i played a small right in that, i'm happy to do it.

>> former lapd christy o'donnell has lung cancer. she does not believe she will live long enough to take advantage of the law, taking affect next year. all lanes of eastbound interstate 580 are open again after oakland police shut down the right lanes around 3:30 this afternoon. they were searching for four robbery suspects they say were riding in this car before it crashed. police say they now caught several suspects but aren't saying if they're searching for anyone else. the search is still on in oakland for a man police want to talk to about last week's murder of a mural artist. police are trying to track down this man, a person of interest. investigators say he's in his 20s, six feet tall and has a thin build. it's been a week since antonio ramos died while working on an antiviolence mural. other artists continued working

on the mural today. >> antonio was all about peace and love. everybody i met since he passed away talked about how he touched their lives. >> . san francisco police are investigating the murder of a woman in golden gate park. a passerby found her body saturday morning. officers say the woman was in her mid-20s to mid-30s and suffered blunt force trauma to the head. in san francisco's sunset district, people are concerned after an attack was caught on camera. an armed robber came into a garage and the homeowner fought back, taking the gun away. residents say this has not been the only break in. sergio? >> reporter: those residents figure the most-recent break ins have been from transient who's may be coming into the neighborhood from golden gate

neighbors gathered for a childrens' party to help them remember in, a happy way, the life of an 8-year-old girl that became a victim of deadly violence. her family came up with the idea. it's been three months since she was murdered. a 15-year-old neighbor is facing charges. her mother says the grief is real but events like this help her cope. >> the kids. i don't understand how a kid can process this kind of thing. so i just want to bring joy to the kids and to their families.

and whoever is here to celebrate maddyson, i'm grateful. san francisco transit planners are calling a pilot program involving tech buses a success. a report found 8500 people use corporate shuttles every day. nearly half say they'd drive if there was no bus. it helped reduce the number of blocked muni buses and cut congestion on the streets. the companies pay $three per stop for passengers to get on, or off. >> the san francisco transit agency is launching a new mobile ticketing app. muni officials say it's not meant to replace clipper cards but give another option to pay for fares. if you want to be a tester, tomorrow is the day to sign up. go to abc7news.com.

the first navy ship of fleet week is tied up in san francisco now. she'll be joined by another half dozen ships as well. and the idea is to take the

agencies in town for fleet week and have them practice different disaster drills. they want people to know fleet week is more than an air show. turns out pocket dials are overwhelming the 911 call center. researchers found 30% of the 911 calls were mistakenly dialled. this is putting a large train on the system because workers have to follow up on every pocket dial. it took a minute to determine whether it was real. >> author molly knight has a surprise for her fans. she has a been looking for a tee shirt and decided to sign the copies of her book.

the suspect at the center of a vallejo kidnapping case asked for a jury trial today. >> a judge decided he will be shackled for future court appearances. >> you're always concerned. >> his attorney will take a look at the fbi evidence over the next month. once a harvard educated lawyer he faces life in prison if

convicted of kidnapping. >> when they make a statement like that, they're stuck with it. >> reporter: muller's close family friend, a former police officer questions that move by law enforcement. he has been at every federal court appearance, lending support. >> this is nation yam exposure. the family is devastated. >> reporter: the case may have never made it to federal court had it not been for another crime in alameda county superior court in connection with a june dublin home invasion. he left his cell phone behind. it led to a treasure trove of evidence linking him to the kidnapping. muller's attorney says he'll move to get key cell phone evidence dismissed. investigators didn't have a warrant to search the phone muller left behind.

thomas johnson went through the motion in the dublin case. he says in exchange for the potential sentence to be served at the same time of prison time, he can get. in sacramento, abc7 news. today, people returned to the campus of umpqua community college. classes don't resume until next week, but staff, faculty and students were allowed to pick up belongings left behind when the shooting began. five of the nine victims who survived remain in the hospital. and an ap source said the gunman was angry he didn't have a girlfriend. those who survived believe he was not emotionally balanced. >> he sounded deranged because he said he had been waiting to do that for a really long time. he and he laughed. >> he laughed? he laughed after he shoot the teacher. >> 18-year-old anastasia boylan

says she survived by playing dead. the president declared a disaster in south carolina following an unprecedented amount of rainfall there. some parts of the state have seen 25 inches of rain. video shows a street flooded over. 500 roads and bridges have been closed, one dam has broken, forcing evacuations in columbia. the rain eased up. >> can't stress that this is not a fun event. so far, nine people died and 40,000 without clean water. an american airlines pilot died today, mid flight from phoenix to boston. the plane was diverted to new york.
