we're getting our first look we're getting our first look at a dramatic smash and grab robbery in britain. police in norwich, england, released this video showing men armed with picks, axes and sledgehammers smashing their way into a jewelry store and making off with three watches worth a combined $45,000. the robbery happened back in august. six men have now been handed prison sentences ranging from 3 to 11 years. let's talk about another crime caper. the fbi found out where a whole lot of cash stolen from an armored truck was hiding. in a backyard. >> investigators certainly had to do some digging around. rob mcmillan has more. >> reporter: who would have thought in this middle-class, nondescript fontana neighborhood that undercover fbi agents would find more than half a million dollars in cash? just buried in the backyard of

this fontana home. certainly not neighbors we spoke with. >> they seemed pretty reserved. i used to see this lady that i always used to say good morning to her. she answered back and it was okay. she was really nice. i'm surprised. no, i don't know that much. i just had my baby. i'm all the time inside. >> reporter: the fbi says the money trail started in los angeles over a year ago. loomis armored truck driver cesar yanez conspired with his partner to steal the money. they were arrested last november. he was sentenced to nearly five years in federal prison but the fbi would not say how the money ended up buried in this fontana backyard nor what led them here. only that it was a tip from an informant. >> after about not even an hour of digging, they discovered that there was a blue tupperware bin and in that bin they found lots of cash in denominations of hundreds and 20s in total

good morning. i'm kend good morning. i'm kendis gibson. >> i'm marci gonzales. here are some of the top headlines we're following this morning on "world news now." the death toll has risen to at least 19 in the flood disaster in south carolina. more than a dozen dams have been pushed to their breaking point with nearly 50 others in the danger zone. we'll have the latest details straight ahead. president obama apologizing for the deadly u.s. air strike on a hospital in afghanistan. highway called the head of doctors without borders directly to offer condolences but the group is still demanding an independent investigation. undercover fbi agents found more than half a million dollars in cash buried in a southern california backyard. an armored car driver and a friend charged with the theft. it took a year for agents to find that cash. a nail-biting rescue in houston. a worker ended up dangling from a bridge when he slipped while doing repairs.

he was pulled to safety after hanging on for 45 minutes amazing. those are some of your top stories on this thursday, october 8th. from abc news, this is "world news now." >> good morning to you everybody. we're going to start with those deadly floods in south carolina. >> the death toll has now risen to at least 19 as hundreds of residents find they have lost everything. but amid the pictures of devastation come tales of survival. liking this grandmother and grandson holding on to a cross for four hours before being rescued from these raging floodwaters. abc's alex perez has more. >> reporter: south carolina on the offensive. 62 dams threatening to burst. >> we're holding our breath and we're saying a prayer. >> reporter: in columbia, officials rushed to evacuate a thousand people living below the

beaver dam just before dawn. >> they have gone nonstop to help prevent a major catastrophe over here. >> reporter: that 52-year-old dam holding more than 91 million gallons of water away from communities downstream. all to shore up this massive breach in a dike near the city's water filtration system. >> we're working around the clock to remedy this. >> reporter: at least 13 dams have failed, including this one in lexington. residents now left to clean up their water-logged homes. >> so, we're just going through it right now, hoping and praying that god watches over us. >> reporter: at least 19 have lost their lives in the carolinas since the rains began. two people were killed. their truck swept away. it had reportedly driven around a road block. another problem? the water is bringing caskets to the surface. >> why are you going in to get them? >> reporter: and in the middle

of this unfolding disaster, with local station wcbd broadcasting live, a pastor retrieved one family's casket. >> if that was my momma, my dad, i'd walk through hell and high water. >> reporter: and this is a delicate situation. those helicopter crews that were here, on hold for now until those power lines can be cleared out of the way. alex perez, abc news, columbia, south carolina. >> that shot is so touching there of that casket. by the way, it's not just people who are in danger in the flood zone. our four-legged friends are scrambling to find dry footing, as well. panicked pups were forced to evacuate their waterlogged cages at this shelter in north carolina. but in a bit of a silver lining to the black cloud, dozens of residents showed up for emergency adoptions. more than 50 dogs found both temporary and permanent homes. the week-long search for the crew of a sunken u.s. cargo ship is now over. but federal investigators are still working to find out what went wrong as the families of the 33 men and women grieve,

some are finding comfort in the bond they shared. more now from abc's linzie janis. >> reporter: crew members' families receiving the news they were dreading. >> it's been six long days of hoping and praying. >> reporter: the exhaustive search for the 33 on board the "el faro" called off by the u.s. coast guard. >> any decision to suspend a search is painful. >> reporter: 25-year-old michael holland's mother thankful for the camaraderie of life at sea. >> if they can't be with this family -- >> yeah. >> then they're with their family. >> reporter: finding solace with the mother of 34-year-old danielle randolph, so proud of her job as a second mate of the "el faro." >> you've got to be strong and believe in god and that was what was designated to happen. >> reporter: some families don't want searchers to stop. like jackie jones sr., whose son is among the missing. >> bring some of him home, that's left of him, so i can give him a proper burial.

>> reporter: the focus now shifting to finding the "el faro's" voyage data recorder or black box, attached to the ship's bridge. the ntsb is vowing to find that recorder and to find answers for these family who's desperately want to know what went wrong. linzie janis, abc news, jacksonville, florida. overseas, the fbi has helped take down an international smuggling ring with links to russia, accused of trying to sell nuclear material to isis. the dramatic sting was captured on video here. criminals prepared to sell terrorists radioactive material to build a dirty bomb were caught instead selling to undercover agents. officials say that russia's unsecured nuclear stockpiles could create a potential nightmare scenario for america. >> undeniable evidence of a failure in nuclear security. material supposed to be under authorized control was found outside of it. >> isis seems more interested in chemical weapons rather than dirty bombs at least for now.

the big story in the presidential race this morning is hillary clinton's new opposition to a major trade deal that president obama supports. that trade deal still has to be approved by congress, and clinton's opposing it sure doesn't help the position of her former boss. it's your voice, your vote. abc's brandi hitt reports. >> reporter: hillary clinton for the fourth time in less than a month is taking a position contrary to the obama administration. the latest, saying no to the transpacific partnership, a trade deal the white house considers a top priority. here's clinton in a pbs "newshour" interview. >> as of today, i am not in favor of what i have learned about it. >> reporter: clinton's recent pushbacks include opposing the keystone pipeline calling for no-fly zones over syria and criticizing the administration's stern deportation policy perhaps in an effort to put daylight between her and a potential joe biden bid. >> things can change in a heartbeat.

>> reporter: an ad paid for by a group of biden supporters is out now hoping to convince the vice president to run. >> we're on the cusp of some of the most astonishing breakthroughs in the history of mankind. >> reporter: for republicans, dr. ben carson continues to defend his remarks suggesting the victims of the oregon campus massacre could have done more and advocating a lot's roll -- a "let's roll" strategy. those words echoing back to 9/11's flight 93. >> from the indications i got, they did not rush the shooter. the shooter can only shoot one person at a time. he cannot shoot a whole group of people. >> but carson didn't seem to know about chris mintz, the army veteran who did in fact rush the shooter saving lives. carson now says mintz did exactly what should be done. the countdown is onto the first democratic debate and joe biden may not be there. his decision whether to run could stretch to the end of this month with the first filing deadline to appear on a ballot november 6th.

kendis and marci? >> brandi hitt reporting from los angeles for us. in the garden state, firefighters had their hands full with an intense tanker truck fire on the new jersey turnpike. police say the truck struck a honda crv, flipping over a guardrail and erupted into flames. the driver of that tanker truck was killed. the driver of the honda suffered only minor injuries. a potentially crippling strike at fiat chrysler factories across the country has been averted. 40,000 workers had been set to walk off the job at midnight but negotiators for both sides reached a new contract just in the nick of time. the uaw tweeted it secured significant gains over the last proposal. and the chicago cubs are moving in on baseball's playoffs. they're moving ahead after beating the pirates last night. the cubs got things started quickly scoring a run in the top

>> from abc news, this is "world news now." good morning, i'm marci gonzalez in for reena ninan. >> i'm kendis gibson. we do thank you for joining us here on this thursday. we'll start on a serious note. really a difficult decision by the coast guard, calling off the search for the crew on board a cargo ship that sank off the bahamas in the middle of hurricane joaquin. >> the families of the 28 americans and five polish crew members are now coming to terms with the tragic loss. investigators are viewing to do everything they can to find out what went wrong. >> reporter: after an exhaustive nearly week-long search for the survivors, the coast guard suspended efforts to find the missing "el faro" crew at sunset. >> the worst ending we could have ever imagined. >> reporter: ntsb investigators looking at communications between the ship's captain and the american ship's owner, tote maritime, while also searching

for the voyage data recorder, the black box. the ship's last known position was near bahamas' crooked island, in the path of hurricane joaquin. >> there was a capsized hatch that was open that allowed water in. they were listing 15 degrees and were without propulsion. >> reporter: debris and this empty battered lifeboat were recovered along with a body found inside a survival suit similar to this. >> our support for the families, loved ones will never, ever, ever stop. >> reporter: investigators want to know if the 41-year-old ship suffered any mechanical problems. it was scheduled to be retired from caribbean duty and retrofitted. now likely at the bottom of the ocean. anguished family members are finding some peace envisioning the entire crew together. >> that's their final resting place. if they can't be with this family -- >> yeah. >> -- then they're with their family. >> reporter: they are still holding out hope for a miracle. ntsb investigators expect they'll be on scene for at least a week trying to figure out not only what happened to the ship but why. kendis and marci?

>> thank you. divers in south carolina have found the bodies of two people whose truck was swept away in those deadly floods, bringing the death toll now to at least 19. at least 13 dams are failing, with others threatening to burst. the beaver dam is now stabilized. a thousand residents who lived below it had been evacuated earlier yesterday. a dike at the columbia canal has collapsed for a second time, where rock dams are being built, and one-ton sandbags dropped. rivers will remain at major flood stage through the weekend. president obama has personally apologized for the deadly u.s. air strike on a hospital in afghanistan. the president's phone call to the head of doctors without borders came days after the strike killed 22 people at the group's facility in the city of kunduz. he also promised the u.s. will look into making changes to make sure this doesn't happen again. >> the united states, when we make a mistake, we're honest

about it, we own up to it, we apologize where necessary, as the president did in this case. >> despite the apology, doctors without borders is still calling for an independent investigation. there's no apology from russia in a major escalation in syria in an apparent close call with a u.s. plane. in an extraordinary display of russian force, more than 25 cruise missiles from warships in the caspian sea were fired at targets 900 miles away in syria. president vladimir putin says those targets were isis terrorists, but the u.s. says not so fast. >> i've said before that we believe russia has the wrong strategy. they continue to hit targets that are not isil. >> putin has been targeting opposition forces, some of them u.s. backed, who are fighting syrian dictator bashar al assad, and it's creating a dangerous situation for u.s. aircraft which have had some close encounters with russian airplanes.

speaking of russia, smugglers with links to that country have been caught in a dramatic international sting with the help of the fbi. they're accused of trying to sell nuclear materials to isis that could be used to make a dirty bomb. the takedown was all caught on video. here's abc's brian ross. [ explosion ] >> reporter: officials say the dramatic new video of this police raid represents the nightmare scenario for the united states. criminal gangs with access to nuclear material from russia like the men arrested here, prepared to sell isis these packets of uranium and radioactive cesium to build a dirty bomb targeting america. >> it's very difficult to be confident we're stopping every one of these types of smuggling operations. >> reporter: the two raids being made public took place with the help of the fbi. over the last ten months, in the eastern european country of moldova. the amount of radioactive material sold was small and of low quality. the actual buyers were not isis but undercover agents.

the case underscores the fact that russia's nuclear stockpiles are extremely vulnerable to theft and diversion. >> it's undeniable evidence of a failure in nuclear security. material that was supposed to be under authorized control was found outside of it. >> reporter: adding to the concern is the fact that since the first of the year, russia has effectively stopped all cooperation with the u.s. to track down and stop the so-called loose nukes. u.s. officials say isis seems much more interested in chemical weapons than a dirty bomb, but officials fear that with all its cash and its evil intentions, it won't be long before the nuclear smugglers come knocking on the isis door. brian ross, abc news, new york. now to presidential politics starting with hillary clinton, who's breaking away from president obama on the issue of trade. clinton says she now opposes the so-called transpacific partnership, a u.s. trade deal with pacific rim nations. she helped lay the groundwork

for the deal as president obama's secretary of state. clinton says the agreement could lead to a loss of american jobs. on the republican side, dr. ben carson is getting some support for his controversial comments following the deadly attack at that community college in oregon. carson suggested the victims should have attacked the gunman in order to stop him. that's what army veteran chris mintz did. he's now recovering from being shot seven times. carson says mintz did "exactly what should be done." that support we mentioned comes from donald trump who says carson has been treated unfairly since his initial comments. volkswagen's top american executive heads to capitol hill to discuss his company's emissions scandal with members of a house committee. mike horn is expected to tell lawmakers that while it straightens out its problem, volkswagen won't sell diesel vehicles in the u.s. for its upcoming model year. horn will also say he first

a dramatic rescue caught on camera in houston after a worker was left dangling from a bridge for nearly an hour. the worker was repairing the bridge yesterday afternoon when he slipped from a catwalk. luckily though, he was wearing a harness and firefighters were able to pull him to safety through a manhole. he has already been released from the hospital. >> yeah, that would have been my last day on the job. >> absolutely. and firefighters in philadelphia are still on the scene of this intense three-alarm warehouse fire. it raged for an hour last night. completely engulfing the building as you can see. no word on how all of this started. we can tell you no one was injured as a result. turning to a courtroom in florida, a judge appearing to berate a victim of domestic violence. >> she initially failed to appear in court to

testify against her alleged abuser but when she tried to explain herself, that's when the judge really gave a tough response. here's abc's linsey davis. >> you disobeyed a court order. >> reporter: this florida judge is on the hot seat tonight, accused of re-victimizing a victim of domestic abuse. >> i'm just -- my anxiety is like -- and this is every day for me. >> you think you're going to have anxiety now? you haven't even seen anxiety. >> reporter: tense exchanges during this contempt of court hearing in july from a woman who failed to show up to testify against her husband who had a prior domestic battery conviction. >> i'm, like, homeless now. i'm living at my parents' house. i'm not in a good place right now. >> reporter: her husband was accused of strangling her at knifepoint while she held their 1-year-old child. he pleaded no contest to simple battery and spent 16 days in jail. she says she told the state she wanted to drop the charges and move on with her life. >> i hereby find you in contempt of court. i sentence you to three days in the county jail.

>> judge, i'll do anything. please. i have a 1-year-old that i'm trying to take care of by myself. i'm begging you, please. >> i've already issued my order. >> reporter: one local advocate for domestic abuse victims said that she approached the judge after the fact and told her it would have been better if she had sentenced her to community service rather than jail time. linsey davis, abc news, new york. >> victim advocates are afraid the kind of message this sends that victims will be afraid to come forward not only because of the abuser but treatment like that in the courtroom. >> unbelievable scene, her reaction in court. by the way, the judge has not commented about any of this. so far, i should tell you there's more. she has never had a complaint filed against her with the state judicial qualifications commission. but that sort of behavior -- >> that's a tough one to watch for sure. coming up in our next half hour, cold hard cash found buried in a backyard. the fbi visited an average california neighborhood and dug up more than half a million

rapids, iowa. president obama has picked up the phone to personally apologize for last weekend's air strike on an afghan hospital. the president expressed condolences to the head of doctors without borders for the 22 people killed in the attack that the military says was a mistake. but the aid group reiterated its call for an independent investigation into what happened. turning now to a major escalation in syria as russia steps up its aerial assault on what it claims are isis targets, but the u.s. says many of those targets are not isis. and it's putting u.s. military aircraft in extreme danger. abc's martha raddatz explains. >> reporter: it was an extraordinary show of russian force. more than 25 cruise missiles fired from 900 miles away into syria. vladimir putin says the target was isis, but there's no evidence the terrorist group was hit.

putin has been targeting opposition forces, some of them u.s.-backed, who are fighting syrian dictator assad. the russian aerial assault coincided with a syrian ground assault aimed at those rebel positions. all creating a dangerous situation for u.s. aircraft, which have had unexpectedly close encounters with russian war planes. a few of which came within miles of a u.s. drone and at least one case where a u.s. war plane changed course because a russian jet was too close. the u.s. is still trying to get russia to talk about coordinating that air space, but until they do, u.s. war planes are trying to stay at least 20 miles away from where the russians are operating. martha raddatz, an abc news, washington. and this morning, the search for the crew of the u.s. cargo ship that sank near the bahamas has been called off. the coast guard said it was a painful and difficult decision to stop looking for the 28 americans and five polish citizens lost last week during

hurricane joaquin. the ntsb is still searching for the ship's data recorder, and president obama promised to give full support to the investigation saying the grieving families deserve answers. the death toll has risen to at least 19 in the flood disaster in the south carolina. days of heavy rain pushed more than a dozen dams to near breaking points with nearly 50 others in the danger zone. abc's elizabeth hur has the latest from columbia, south carolina. >> reporter: with at least 13 dams failing and others threatening to burst in south carolina, it prompted the evacuation of a thousand people near the beaver dam. meanwhile, in the columbia canal, rock dams are being built and one-ton sand bags dropped to stabilize the water levels on the canal breached on monday. >> the plan is to close the breach and the wall between the canal and the congaree river. if we're able to do that, then we'll be in good shape for the long haul. >> reporter: now calls for prayers for residents still reeling after the weekend

deluge. so many who already lost so much are now being warned to prepare for more evacuations and flooding. >> never experienced anything like this. so we're just going through it right now. >> it's smelly and it's wet. >> reporter: with all eyes still on the several rivers at or near flood stage and some 400 roads and bridges already closed a warning for drivers. >> if that road is closed, it's closed because we're trying to protect you. >> reporter: at this time, authorities say the columbia canal which is just behind me here and the beaver dam are the two areas of immediate concern as they prepare for more flooding in the next 24 hours. marci and kendis, back to you. >> elizabeth, thank you. turning now to new concerns in new york over the bacteria that causes legionnaires disease following a deadly outbreak in the bronx. traces of legionella have been discovered at cooling towers at three more schools on long island, bringing the total number of affected buildings there to ten. most of the towers have already been disinfected, and there are

no reports of anyone getting sick. and now to a bizarre mix-up that left a south florida woman with her eye glued shut. catherine gato asked a friend to get her eye drops from her purse when something blew into her eye. her friend grabbed super glue instead and squirted it right into her eye. she has been walking around with her eye shut now for a week, and says she can't afford the surgery that she needs. negotiators for both the united auto workers and chrysler managed to avert a potentially crippling strike at factories across the country. some 40,000 workers were prepared to walk off the job at midnight, but just at last night's deadline, both sides reached a new tentative contract. no details have been released but the uaw has tweeted that it secured significant gains over the last proposals. europe's third largest budget airline norwegian air promising super cheap fare.

we're getting our first look we're getting our first look at a dramatic smash and grab robbery in britain. police in norwich, england, released this video showing men armed with picks, axes and sledgehammers smashing their way into a jewelry store and making off with three watches worth a combined $45,000. the robbery happened back in august. six men have now been handed prison sentences ranging from 3 to 11 years. let's talk about another crime caper. the fbi found out where a whole lot of cash stolen from an armored truck was hiding. in a backyard. >> investigators certainly had to do some digging around. rob mcmillan has more. >> reporter: who would have thought in this middle-class, nondescript fontana neighborhood that undercover fbi agents would find more than half a million dollars in cash? just buried in the backyard of this fontana home. certainly not neighbors we spoke with.
