>> it's sunday, october 11th. good morning and thanks for joining us. i'm chris nguyen in for carolyn tyler. after a cool start across the bay, here's lease arm with a live look at the weather. >> good morning, lisa. >> good morning. >> we have a half-mile visibility napa and half moon bay. otherwise host of you are looking at a clear start. so with temperatures ranging from the low 50s from santa rosa to the low 60s on the coast. half moon bay and 59 in livermore and we will look for a little bit of warming today as high pressure slowly builds in. once again we are looking at numbers 60s, 70s and 80s but the big numbers come in the north bay. a few degrees warmer in the east bay and everyone climbs another ten degrees tomorrow. i'll let you know how long the

warmup will last coming up. chris. the blue angels return to the skies over san francisco today at 3:00. yesterday one million fans were looking to the sky for saturday's show but after the show they headed home into gridlock. cornell bernard was along san francisco's embarcadero. >> the familiar war over san francisco's waterfront can mean only one thing, the blue angels were back, taking flight above the bay. it was worth looking up. >> it's spectacular. almost have no words for it. it's so beautiful. >> the white-knuckle precision acrobatics exciting and kind of unnerving to leia. >> it has to be the scariest part when they get a little too close. >> at times the jets are only 18 inches apart sometimes.

but when the airshow was over, thousands of drivers perform their own unrehearsed show called traffic gridlock. a nightmare trying to get home. >> it's worse than los angeles. it's way worse. >> san francisco police were trying to direct traffic around bottlenecks, which lasted for hours. public transit wasn't much better. muni street cars were jam-packed. >> not fun. they are blocking the intersection. naughty, naughty. [applause] >> the blue angels pilots and support crew met fans at pier 39 and signed autographs. this six-year-old dressed in glasses and a flight suit got some career advice. >> i don't know if i want to be a pilot or a doctor. >> this stanford grad met her idol, the captain. the first female pilot. montgomery plans to fly planes for the marine corps.

that we may have another huge fire where we lose a bunch of homes. >> an faa spokesman said the plane crashed shortly after takeoff yesterday from the lake tahoe airport, skimming the trees in a residential neighborhood before crashing. no one in the house was injured. the crash is being investigated. a hiker who may have been injured running from a mountain lion was carried to safety last night in contra costa county. rescuers responded in the afternoon to a remote trail. the hiker was located on the trail, but it was too steep for a ground ambulance or helicopter rescued. they hiker was finally taken to the medical center for treatment. all of us have experienced the frustration that comes from gridlock. it's happening more and more because more cars are cramming on to streets and freeways.

but gridlock can also be a matter of life and death in emergencies, especially if fire trucks and ambulances are still stuck in standstill traffic. sergio quintana has more. >> this is dashcam video on fire engine one. you see the driver had to go against traffic because of gridlock along willow road. this is something fire crews are allowed to do but they prefer not to because of safety concerns. >> there is only one lane there, one lane that way. there's a huge median in the way. in case of an emergency no one can get down. >> i'm very concerned too. something happens and you can't get the emergency vehicles in here, it's a problem. but it's solid traffic in the aftenoons from middleton road to the demark bridge. >> the traffic in menlo park has become such a problem they have to drive around there if it is,

drive around there if it is, but we need to have fast response times to get to people's homes when they are on fire, when someone has been a heart attack, they are in a vehicles accident or there's a hazardous materials call. >> the commute times we aren't meeting the standards. that's about road design. >> a similar concern has been raised by san francisco fire chief over narrow streets in her districts. she was concerned fire trucks would not fit down narrow streets. city planners are trying to manage traffic flows, the chief is hoping emergency crews will have a voice in any changes. abc7 news. >> in richmond investigators say a man riding a bicycle was killed after he went around a railroad crossing arm. it happened just before 2:00 p.m. yesterday. it was near cutting and carleton boulevard. the man got hit by a union traffic train. investigators say he was trying to beat the train. good. >> in san francisco's north

beach neighborhood, many people ran when this tree fell along columbus avenue in san francisco's north beach yesterday morning. nobody was hurt. supervisor julie christensen's office radio tweeted these pictures shortly after the tree fell around around 10:30 a.m. that tree happened to be one of nine scheduled to be removed by city crews. president obama is back in the white house this morning. he left los angeles last night after another whirlwind day of fundraising. his three-day west coast trip also took him to oregon where he spoke to families of the roseburg massacre and to san francisco. abc7 news was outside the theater on market treat yesterday where hundreds of people lined up hoping to get a glimpse of the president before his speech. fundraiser also attracted protesters, many from the block lives matter movement. president obama shared the spotlight with kanye west and offered some friendly advice to the rapper who may have political aspirations. we have that story. >> in case kanye is serious will -- about this whole thing, or

thinks it's easy, i do have advice for him. first of all, you have to spend a lot of time dealing with some strange characters who behave like they are on a reality tv show. and you have to be cool with that. >> being married to kim kardashian shouldn't be a problem. >> saying that you have a beautiful dark twisted fantasy. that's what's known as off-message in politics. you can't say something like that. >> that might be good advice for kanye to follow. he went to serious issues he said this country needs to address, including immigration, climate change and gun violence. >> we don't have to have young boys in oakland getting shot every day. we don't have to have kids in classrooms feeling threatened because somebody's got an ak-47.

we don't need to have that. that's a choice we make. president obama said gun massacres are avoidable with regulations changes and preserve the constitution and protect children. and that was abc7 news reporter tiffany wilson. an oakland family will remember this moment forever. president obama embraced their baby boy at sfo shortly before taking off from los angeles. they were invited to the president's sendoff, and the commander-in-chief took notice of joseph iii. >> he said how great will it be if he reaches for the baby. you always think about those candid shots of president and baby. we hoped he would but said it would be far-fetched. when he said give me that baby, we all swooned and melted. >> it was amazing. i'm still star struck. >> family members snapped these photos just a few feet away from the president and little joseph.

>> happening today, streets between fremont and sinole will be closed to call so bicyclists and pedestrian can have the trail to themselves and raise funds for a new bike trail. this is what nice canyon street looks like from open the trial. it's pretty narrow in some places. now here's the road from the bicyclist's point of view. pretty scary of the last year a bicyclist was killed. there's a move to put in a trail separate from niles canyon road. >> here are the numbers from the east bay hills camera, upper 50s to near 60s for the east bay valleys. enjoy it because plenty of 90s on the way for the next several days. i'll explain in a few minutes. >> thank you. also ahead, spencer stone, one of the heroes who helps stop a terror attack.

spencer stone's spirits are up after a visit in the hospital. he was stabbed early thursday morning. stone and two other friends stopped a terrorist attack on a train in paris earlier this year. yesterday one of his friends visited him. this picture was posted on instagram. it said saw the hero today. he also tweeted, spencer is one tough guy, and only he could have gone through something like that and lived yet again. although it's sometimes hard to tell with our warm weather, winter is just around around the corner and that means it's time for flu shots. some are offering drive-through flu shots. just roll down the window and roll up your sleeve. while you will a shots may not be that convenient, doctors say it's important to get one now before the end of the month. that's when the flu virus can begin to appear, and it takes two weeks for the vaccine to take effect 6:14 is our time. dozens of young women got a chance to see what career might be in their future. it was the girls smart protect workshop.

quite a while and all of a sudden he responded two weeks later and we thought, are you serious? it's once in a lifetime. where he will remember this hike for a long time. we will remember that it was tom hanks that paid attention to our school. >> students teachers also dressed up as some of hanks's characters every day last week. they hope he will eventually make his way to the school for an in-person visit. if you have a giant pumpkin or you would like to see big gourds. monster pumpkins like this will be there tomorrow for the world championship weigh-off. the record is 2330 pounds. if someone beats it, $30,000 will go to the grower. the winning pumpkin will also get a starring role in next week andy famous half moon bay art and pumpkin festival. 6:16 is our time.

i don't know about you, but i feel like a pumpkin spice lawsuit take right now. >> sounds good. good morning, everybody. we are locking for a nice start to the day. a few areas from napa to half moon bay are at a half-mile. we were down to an eighth-mile in san jose but it's clearing. a bigger warmup for some of you. this is tropical storm nora, the 14th of the season in the pacific. it is passing south. it will pass south of the ryan hands. i'm showing this to you because it's indicative of the active season in the pacific. surpassing '97, '98. at this point it looks like we cannot fail with a moral straighted rainfall from december to perhaps march. it's looking better and better.

almost at about 70 percent that we had see above normal rainfall. 61 half moon bay. 60 fran. 59 in oakland. you see a few clouds floating around here from the exploratorium camera. they will scatter out. we will see another day in the 70s in san francisco with that sea breeze returning in the afternoon. 54 novato. fairfield light wind. cop cord and livermore upper 50s to near 06. little change there about cooler from novato to santa rosa. but the trend reverses today. well in the 80s up toward wine country, sonoma and napa. much warmer for you. partly cloudy this morning. otherwise clear. look for slightly warmer conditions and hot inland. we we are going to jump another 10 crease tomorrow. it should feel good today. the 80s once again, east bay valleys. but 90s to upper 90s come tuesday. it will be short-lived. i'll explain why in a minute.

today it's a northwesterly swell all the way up and down the coast. a few clouds around bodega bay. the beaches will be pleasant but dangerous with the possibility of stopping rip currents. with one system headed up into the gulf of alaska, we have another one here. a cut-off low. these meander with their own direction. they aren't caught up in the jet stream. so steering them is sort of impossible. it's hard for the forecast models to come in alignment as to where this thing is going to go. but it will cool down southern california as soon as tomorrow. here's the forecast into wednesday. we see some moisture off the coast here and then into thursday you see it around the state. we will keep our eye on that. in the meantime it's all about a warmup around the bay today. with low 70s today. so pretty decent for fleet week.

it today. ice your typical summertime fall-like forecast. by tomorrow and tuesday we are back to the october warm numbers with an offshore flow. details on that and a hook ahead which could bring some showers coming up. chris. >> lisa, thank you. while our weather is pleasant, southern california is boiling. the temperature reached 105 degrees in one orange county city yesterday. 63 people were treated in a heritage day parade. and instructors told band members to drink lots of water. the heat was so bad, cables melted in west los angeles, causing power outages in west los angelos. in south carolina there are still thrash flood warnings in effect this morning even though dry conditions are predicted for the rest of the week. even with things simmering down,

more than 300 bridges and roads remain closed. 100 dams are still being monitored open top of the 20 that already breached. 19 people have died on account of the floods. south carolina's governor is urging residents to stay at home today and watch some football. the community college murders and two more shootings since then have cast their shadows on the presidential campaign. abc news reporter richard cantu has the story. >> in oregon, a memorial service for lucas, one of nine victims of the college massacre. three shootings in a week have put gun control in tight focus once again. president obama, who visited the families of the victims open friday is exploring executive action for increased gun control measures. he addressed the national convention committee last week. >> we don't have to have students in classrooms feeling

party's point of view on the race for the white house and the ongoing search for a speaker of the house. presidential candidate and governor bobby jindal will weigh in with his views. you can see it right here on abc7 at 8:00. while governor jindal says democratic calls for tougher gun laws is shallow and simpleminded, governor brown of california is making the restrictions on firearms even tighter. he is banning the on sealed kerry of handguns at colleges and school. it is currently illegal to have a firearm within one thousand feet of a school or college, but people with permits are exempted. that exemption ends with a new law. governor brown also signed an act that will allow you to automatically register to vote the next time you renew your driver's license at the dmv. his office calls it a landmark measure and you are they hope it allows millions to stay on the voter rolls.

you can opt out if you want, and oregon is the only other state with a similar measure. it's been a little more than a year since an outpouring of support from abc7 news went to the rescue of starving and abused horses in the south bay. this morning the horses are thriving but the rescuers are facing a crisis. ama daetz has more. >> this is a family near watsonville. what we are doing is giving something that somebody didn't want that was being thrown out, we gave him a life. >> here's bobo in september of last year, starving and infested with parasites. >> i didn't think he was going to make it. >> bobo was one of more than 30 neglected horses are found in morgan hill and gilroy, all owned by the same man, now convicted of felony animal abuse. >> nobody will take the time to fix these horses and give them a second chance. >> at first santa clara county

animal control refused to step in so a nonprofit equine rescue center bought 11 horses in the worst condition and brought them to a sanctuary south of hollister. one horse was so sick he did die while in their care. but the others are all doing well. this is a horse that was pregnant when she was rescued. >> both horses have such special needs. they need grain and hay three times a day. it's not an easy process. >> volunteers pitched in. >> healing. the horses give me love, i can give them love. >> but the care still costs thousands of dollars. the horse's former owner is under court order to pay restitution, but the monthly checks barely make a dent. $14.54. >> monica runs the center which finds homes for adoptable horses and provides sanctuary for others. >> you can tell which horses we've had for a long time because they are fat. >> the long drought and lack of hay has led to a glut of unwanted horses where the

current drought. they have more than 80 and are struggling to pay the bills. it's so bad they may have to shut down but there is hope. >> this property has four wells on it. >> that's right, there's water here so they need an irrigation system to grow food and cut down the hay bills. >> it will unable them to be financially solvent and secure and not have to rely so heavily on donors on an ongoing basis. >> if they can raise the money for irrigation to show it's financially viable, he has large donors lined up to buy it and preserve it forever as a horse sanctuary. if not, the future looks grim. >> that was ama daetz reporting. the center needs to raise about $50,000. they are about halfway to the goal and need your help. we have a link at our website, abc7news.com. still ahead on the sunday

>> nice to have you with us this morning. in sports both the raiders and 49ers will try to rebound from losses last week. the denver broncos play. tonight the niners look to end their three-game skid against the new york giants at met life stadium. kickoff at 5:30. last night 23rd ranked cal battled number five utah. it came down to the final minute. here the highlights from this morning's sports report. >> good morning. well, quarterback gerald goff was having a heisman-like season until he faced off against fifth-ranked utah in their biggest game of the year. he drew five picks.

low clouds and you have the radiational cooling and temperatures drop off. that's what we are experiencing this morning. from our roof camera, a few clouds floating around. no problems at sfo. partly cloudy this morning. sunny skies. slightly warmer for some of you and hot tomorrow and tuesday as temperatures climb into the 90s inland with a slight offshore flow on tuesday. so the flow is slightly different today, slightly stronger. southwesterly swell yesterday, northwesterly today. it all amounts to those very strong rip currents and the high sets that will keep it dangerous from sonoma to monterey. in between systems. the one to the north keeping the onshore flow with us. the one to the south is a cut-off low that is definitely inparent of just making its own track. it will cool down southern california as soon as tomorrow. then by late tuesday monterey, you could see some showers, and popping up through wednesday and
