live from the kgo broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. good afternoon and thank you for joining us. >> a rare sighting in san francisco bay. take a look at this. a shark attacking a seal off alcatraz island. a tourist caught it all on camera. >> what is so rare is the type of shark involved. sergio joins us. >> reporter: it is rare to have a shark go so far into the bay. scientists have been tracking him about 500 yards into san francisco bay using radio transmitters. this shark, this weekend, made it out to alcatraz island.

it's a great white. eight to ten feet long, 1200 to 1500 pounds. this is a video that's been causing a stir this weekend. >> a frenzy. >> reporter: it was shot by a tourist at alcatraz island, a great white shark feeding on a sea lion. >> the first that i know of in the san francisco bay. >> reporter: he's in shark group, and they educate people about sharks. they have tracked them into the bay before, but never a sighting so far in. >> never an encounter with a human. we have seen them. it's shocking to see one next to the alcatraz dock next to a boat full of tourists. >> reporter: they made the rounds where many are training for a swim race this weekend. they will be jumping in about the spot where this video was shot. >> it was scary to see a big pool of blood in the water. something you think about out there.

>> reporter: the race stretches from alcatraz island to san francisco park. most swimmers say there are plenty of other things they have to worry about that are more likely than an encounter with a shark. >> i'm just going to go swimming. >> reporter: october has been dubbed sharktober by surfers because this is when they are most active in the area. the waters outside the golden gate bridge is one of the most active shark feeding areas in the world. in san francisco, abc 7 news. now to sizzling heat today in southern california. temperatures reached the 90s in los angeles county and triple digits inland. the area is sweating through record breaking heat. a high of 100 degrees yesterday. a fall heat wave gripped the area the past four days. the temperatures some 20 degrees above normal. cooler weather is expected tomorrow. >> it was hot today in parts of the bay area.

we have a look outside. take that jacket off. >> i'm going to take off the jacket and the tie. it's warm out here. we have blue skies, sunny skies all over the area. it's warm to hot. you can see near the coastline, it's cloudy. a look at the 24 hour temperature changes. 17 degrees warmer in san francisco than yesterday. 14 degrees warmer across the bay and oakland. you can see the increase in temperatures in the 24 hour period. so far, it has reached 95 today in livermore. 94 in santa rosa. concord 93, so far. fairfield, 92. around the bay, mid-80s, including a high of 86 here in san francisco. just as warm here as redwood city and half-moon bay. i'll give you a look at what's coming our way in a few minutes. we have big changes coming our way. more heat as well.

>> spencer, thank you. these three murder suspects are headed back to the bay area following their arrest in oregon last week. he killed two people, one in marin county and another in san francisco. let's take a live look from sky 7 hd over the marin county jail where they are expected to arrive anytime. the arrest came after the marin county deputies tracked a stolen car to portland. he was shot to death hiking with his dog. the trio also killed a canadian tourist in golden gate park. a mountainview man faces charges of indecent contact with a child. he was a foster parent for five years. a foster boy told his mother about inappropriate behavior and contact. they believe there could be other victims. iran's spokesperson

confirmed bay area journalist has been convicted of espionage. the 39-year-old correspondent has been in jail there more than a year. iranian tv called him an american spy, which he and "the washington post" deny. >> he is innocent. he is an accredited journalist and caught up in larger forces inside iran. >> he could face up to 20 years in prison. the newspaper listed his family and legal council to appeal the verdict within the 20 day limit. the u.s. state department is calling on the government to drop all charges. the american dentist who sparked outrage when he shot a lion has been cleared of wrong doing. the cabinet minister says palmer did not break hunting laws when he killed cecil the lion with a

bow and arrow in april. a 47-year-old was hit on a bicycle by a muni bus. he was riding along the strip between two muni bus lines. he came in contact with a bus yesterday. it happened during the blue angels air show. they have not said who was at fault, but it was not a bike lane. they were headed west when he lost control and the bus ran over him. cars drove off highway 87, down an embankment and a homeless encampment. it happened on the northbound side before the capital expressway. it was around 2:00 a.m. one homeless man and two women living there went to the hospital with minor injuries. the driver was not hurt. chp says alcohol and drugs were not involved. the driver may have been overly tired. a train has a problem. the commuter trains hit six cars stuck on the tracks.

that's more than the total number of cars hit by the agency in all of 2014. abc 7 new res porter joins us to tell us about what's going on and what the agency plans to do about it. lee ann? >> reporter: three of the six cars hit by the commuter trains occurred here in burling game. fortunately, no one was injured at the time. cal tran officials met this morning to try to understand what's going on and what to do about it. now, there are a number of things they say contributing to the accidents. one is a huge construction going on on highway 101 at the broadway interchange. that is creating a back up. now, during commute time, you have very heavy congestion. it was decided this morning to put some measures in place to avoid anymore accidents. >> in the short term, we are looking at doing striping, maybe long term, possibly new signage in the area.

i know long term we are going to be working with the city of burliburl i inggame to look at the signals to make sure the timing is correct. >> reporter: that is another problem. the traffic lights here are not synced. they have asked the police to add extra enforcement in the area to remind drivers they must be 15 feet away from the tracks. i didn't know that. some people have been given a warning, others cited. cal tran is starting a social media campaign on twitter to try to alert and let their followers know about safety. they hope this will help. they have close to 40,000 followers. i'm live in burlingame. a display of team work. cameras rolling with firefighters and good

samaritans. you can see there. wow! it was stuck in a trailer that overturned on highway 99. authorities say the driver of the semitruck was going in the wrong direction when it hit the vehicle with the horse trailer. >> it got very chaotic. i appreciate that people want to get involved. usually they want to drive by. they saw the horse and we all have a huge heart for animals, or most of us do. >> a firefighter was injured when the horse stepped on his foot. >> incredible. the golden state warriors are closer to building a new arena in san francisco. they purchased a 12-acre site. environmental review should be completed this fall. they hope to open the 18,000 seat venue in 2018. more fallout from the violent collision. the los angeles dodgers, chase utley can play while he appeals

southwest airlines says it fixed the glitch that caused headaches for folks across the country for two days.

it grounded hundreds of flights and forces thousands to adjust their travel plans. we have the latest. >> roll with the punches. >> reporter: passengers have the right attitude as they prepare for the worst. they were told to come two hours before their flight with their printed boarding passes. they only realized there was a glitch when they couldn't access the website. >> we did it all day. it finally went through, hours later. >> we couldn't check in. >> we couldn't check in for the longest time. >> reporter: by 6:00 a.m., everything seemed to be back to normal and passengers were able to check in without hiccups. >> i'm going for a girl's weekend. i don't want to be late. >> reporter: those that need to rebook their flights need to find their missing bags. it caused 800 flight delays across the country. they waited in long lines across

the airport while agents wrote tickets and luggage by hand. they are apologizing for the inconvenience. >> it hasn't been much of an issue for me. here we are in line for the airport. >> reporter: southwest airlines is not the only one experiencing computer glitches. over the summer, american and united faced similar issues. in all three cases, it was not the result of hacking. in oakland, abc 7 news. coming up, michael finney has advice if you are one of the thousands caught up in the delays. an emergency landing in buffalo new york. pilots landed the plane safely after a small fire was reported in the back galley of the boeing 737. here is what caused it. the airline says a credit card reader used to buy meals started smoking. it was put out by the flight

moves inland. it may produce light showers saturday. we are hoping for rain. overnight, look for clear skies, no showers, low temperatures generally in the upper 50s. then tomorrow, we'll have mainly sunny skies, with high cloud that is push through the area tomorrow. they will not produce rainfall. warmer in the coast. highs upper 70s to 80 on the coast. mid to upper 80s around the bay. low to mid-90s inland. as you can see, seven day forecast, cools down on wednesday. thursday and friday, looking at cloudier and much cooler conditions. we may see light showers on saturday. that's the best chance for a slight chance. fall-like pattern continues on sunday. so, not a lot of change in temperature. skies will become cloudier, but only a slight, slight chance of rain. >> spencer, thank you so much. coming up next --

here are the headlines at 4:30. three suspects accused of robbing and killing a canadian backpacker and yoga instructor are on the way to oregon to jail today. the trio is charged with murder. they will be prosecuted for both cases in marin county for both crimes. this picture was tweeted of the driveway that will be used to deliver them to the jail.

the san francisco mta may close two blocks to all traffic except cable guards starting next month. they say the wear and tear of the cables could lead to banning them completely. the state is going to close the sonoma county facility that cares for severely disabled patients. families wonder where their loved ones will go. abc 7 new res porter joins us in santa rosa with that story. >> it is one of three facilities in the state, which provides care for the severely disabled. two of the facilities are in the southland. the state plans to close all three facilities, sonoma being the first. the families of the residents there are angry. they plan to fight that decision. >> the families are devastated. we are very worried because a safety net that has been in

place for decades is going away and disappearing. >> reporter: it's the sonoma developmental center in smo ma county. they care for 400 residents with severe development al facility. an autistic son is a patient. developmental services plans to close the facility in 2018 and move them to community boarding care homes. many families say their fragile loved ones were already in community care before they were moved to the sonoma center. mueller's son was kicked out of every one of them. >> he's been ejected because of his mental illness. now, they are putting him back in that system with no safety net. >> reporter: they have had a troubled past. four years ago, a psych tech was caught using a stun gun on

severely disabled residents. state regulators concluded patients were repeatedly put at risk of injury, sexual abuse and death. the police force was under fire for the lax investigation. miller says things have improved. >> they have hired more staff. they have put measures into place. i think that has made a big improvement. >> reporter: the department of developmental services says 2018 is not a hard deadline. it won't close until all residents are transferred out to appropriate community facilities. vic lee, abc 7 news. police in texas are standing by their decision to use a taz zz taser on a city councilman. jonathan miller asking why his friends were being questioned in his front yard. in the video, they acknowledge

consequences of breaking those rules. >> reporter: a 2012 survey by the trade commission took a look at 400 apps. the fcc finding 17% of them had the ability to make purchases for virtual goods within the app raising the price from 99 cents to $29.99. apple and google settling complaints with the fcc refunding millions for the purchases. google, $19 million. what can you do to make sure your kids aren't breaking the bank? >> set up a password so your kids don't make purchases you don't want them making. if they happen to make them, you can request a refund. >> here is a warning. experts say you should pay attention to the types of games your children are playing. there are many that do not have inapp purchases, so focus on them. there's a trend in online

disease. most studies were done in asia where people drink more tea. some drink beer after a work out because it's full of carbs. they say it's not a good idea. focus on getting hydrates, then enjoy the beer. dying at home is more peaceful than the hospital and better for loved ones. a study done in kings college in london. caregivers felt less stress. the patients had similar pain levels, no matter where they were, they had less stress at home. kids with food allergies are starting an interesting campaign. the pumpkin project. homes not serving food, put out a teal pumpkin. according to the project, more than 100,000 homes pledged to offer non-food treats.

there's a map for homes with different things. earlier this hour, we told you about southwest's computer glitch that backed up travelers over the weekend. >> hundreds of flights, thousands of travelers. michael finney is here with advice. what do you do if you are stuck in this? >> it's not good news. i wish i had a lot. southwest airline passengers had few rights and fewer work arounds to the huge delay. no laws say airlines have to compensate you for a delay unless you have been bumped. now, since it is going to matter of one passenger being bumped for another, those rules don't apply. rights.org says you have a right to ask for a full refund, if your flight has been substantially delayed. that can be an hour or two. volkswagen is facing lawsuits over the emissions scandal from

individual states, starting with texas. the texas attorney general filed two lawsuits against vw and audi of america. the first citing breaches of the state's consumer protection law, the second that the company violated texas clean air laws. they have been proactive of consumer issues the past years and moving ahead with the lawsuit was other state's attorney generals who don't want to be seen as weak or unproductive. a much anticipated book about scammers and identity thieves will hit the shelves soon. he says a credit score is more than what many of us think. people say that your credit report is an indication of how well you manage your finances. i think your credit report is an indication of how alert you are

schools. today is columbus day or indig nous people's day. >> depends on where you live. here in the bay area, it is a federal holiday. some schools are out. what this means is a matter of perfection. laura anthony joins us now from berkeley. >> reporter: here in berkeley, this is one of the first cities to rename the holiday. other cities around the country are starting to come around. some are sticking with tradition. in chicago, the traditional columbus day parade went on as usual. in other cities, places like st. paul and portland, this day has been rechristened indig nous people day. berkeley was the first city to rename the holiday in 1992.

arrest in oregon. the killings of a well known yoga teacher and a canadian tourist. thanks for joining us. abc 7 news reporter, wayne freedman, is out in san rafael with more. wayne? >> reporter: we have been here all day waiting for the suspects to arrive. the focus is over my shoulder. that is the road to the marin county jail, the road they will be taking sooner rather than later. it is roughly a ten-hour drive from portland to san rafael. so many have such an interest in such a trip. this suspect, stand accused of two bay area murders within the space of a week. police found the body of 23-year-old aaudrey, from canad. two days later, the body of a 67-year-old along a hiking trail

in fair fax. with help from the public, the marin county sheriff's office picked up the suspects trail almost immediately and made the arrest in portland where they found the gun that killed carter and property belonging to audrey. the suspects will stand trial for both murders, even though they took place in different counties. >> if you are a prosecutor and you can introduce evidence about two murders in the same form, it can strengthen your case against each one of them. >> that was wayne freedman reporting. we want to look at the jail. this is a live look now. you can see how the jail is built into the hillside. we are keeping an eye out for the police transport vehicle. we'll update you on the situation at 6:00. there is a strange discovery
