state trooper on a utah highway during a traffic stop. a 55-year-old female driver distracted on a cell phone looked up just in time to see the trooper on the left side of the road. interviewed and careened off the road, rolling her vehicle off the road. she was life flighted to the hospital with serious but nonlife-threatening injuries. well, it's not just grown-ups who can't seem to put that cell phone down. new research suggests a growing number of teens are compulsive texters. the study of more than 400 students found many overtexting teens exhibit the same signs as compulsive gamblers including losing sleep over texting and lying to cover up how much time they spend on texting. girls text compulsively far higher than boys. boys in the study who were compulsive texters were not at risk of doing poorly in school. and even the youngest of children are getting into trouble with their electronic

good morning. i'm ryan smith. >> i'm reena ninan. here's some of the top headlines we're following this morning on "world news now." political showdown. the democrats get ready to go head to head in their first debate. but they're promising to play nice. will that keep viewers away? donald trump predicting a dud tonight. much more coming up shortly. in kansas city, two firefighters have died battling this blaze in an apartment building. the fire chief called it "the worst day." a small fire aboard an alaskan airlines flight prompted an emergency landing. the crew put out the fire and there were no injuries. >> it's being billed as the biggest tech merger deal ever. dell is buying emc for $67 billion. dell is looking to expand beyond the slumping personal computer industry.

those are some of our top stories today on this tuesday, october 13th. from abc news, this is "world news now." well, good morning. we begin this half hour with what's happening in vegas. baby, vegas. five democrats, right? they're ready to chase -- they're ready to make their case to the country, not chase the country down. make their case and face-off in a primetime debate. >> that's right, vegas for the debates. as vice president joe biden's decision i would say looms, it could be a critical night for relative unknowns trying to emerge from the shadows of hillary clinton and bernie sanders. it's your voice, your vote. for more, abc's cecilia vega. >> reporter: hillary clinton deep in debate prep, but all eyes on the one person who won't be anywhere near that stage. joe biden spending the weekend

in delaware with family. sprinting at his granddaughter's cross country meet. but dodging questions about whether he plans to run for the white house. >> everyone wants to know, are you -- >> get out of my way, will you? >> reporter: president obama weighing in on "60 minutes" with nothing but praise for biden. >> i think joe will go down as one of the finest vice presidents in history, and one of the more consequential. i think he has done great work. >> reporter: the president will not say whether biden should enter the race, but national polls show clinton with a commanding lead and biden trailing far behind. but he could cost her crucial votes in the iowa and new hampshire where she's locked in a battle with bernie sanders. if she can weather that storm, new polls out show her way ahead in the next two states. a 25-point lead in south carolina and a 16-point advantage here in nevada. where clinton faces rivals like sanders who is promising to play nice. >> i mean, i happen to respect and like hillary clinton. so i don't get into personal attacks. you know that. but are there differences of

opinion that should be discussed, of course there are. that's what an election is about. >> reporter: debate organizers still hoping joe biden shows up. they even have a podium ready for him just in case. we know hillary clinton has been holding mock debates. her aides playing the role of some of her rivals. for many of these candidates, the goal is simple. they need to make a name for themselves, they need to make a first impression. for hillary clinton, she cannot afford to make any mistakes. everything is on the line and hillary and former president bill clinton have just arrived here in las vegas. cecilia vega, abc news, las vegas. well, hillary clinton reserved her first attack in las vegas for donald trump. she showed up unannounced at a labor protest at his hotel and clinton addressed hundreds of workers who are trying to unionize and urged them to say no to trump. meanwhile, we're learning that former president bill clinton will not be at the debate. daughter chelsea is on a book tour. like the first two gop debates the democratic face off is not expecting to be a ratings

the "sunday times" of london said today we'll learn those where russia made surface-to-air missiles. new demands from the u.s. state department after an american reporter was convicted of spying in iran. the u.s. is calling on iran to release "the washington post" journalist who is in prison. abc's brian ross reports on the conflict. >> reporter: the announcement in iran today that "washington post" reporter jason rezaian was convicted as a spy came on his 448th day as a prisoner there. >> this is an outrage. the whole process has been contemptible. >> reporter: an american citizen of iranian descent, rezaian was the tehran bureau chief for the "washington post," one of the few western journalists there. just six weeks before his arrest last year he talked with cnn about living in iran. >> i love it and i hate it but it is home. >> reporter: since his arrest, rezaian's only contact with the outside world has been with his iranian wife and his mother who travelled there from california to speak for him. >> he and his wife who is also a journalist have not been able to. she is not able to speak to the

press. so i am speaking for both of them. >> reporter: rezaian is accused of espionage, for among other things, simply reporting the news. when president obama made a plea for rezaian's freedom earlier this year -- >> we will not rest until we bring him home to his family. >> reporter: -- the iranians said that was simply further evidence of rezaian's sponsor as a u.s. spy. his brother aali told abc news, the iran and u.s. need to do more. >> until he's out, there has not been enough is done. >> the iranians have floated the idea of a prisoner swap that would include not only rezaian but three other americans who are also believed to be held in iran. brian ross, abc news, new york. it's likely to be another violent day for israelis and palestinians today. palestinians calling for a day of rage in the west bank gaza and east jerusalem after police shot and killed two palestinian

teenagers who had allegedly attacked israelis with knifes. the violence is escalating and israel is having trouble containing it. things are slowly getting back to norm in south carolina following deadly floods. a section of i-95 swamped by the historic floodwaters is reopened to traffic for the first time in eight days, but the northbound lanes remain closed. many students returned to school. governor is promising to rebuild but refused to speculate how much it will cost. meanwhile, neighboring north carolina is seeing another side effect from that historic rainfall. more mosquitos. some parts of the state have seen an uptick in the population. some of those blood suckers have tested positive for west nile virus in one county. everyone urged to take precautions. mets fans wanted to see chase outley punished for the slide that broke ruben tejada's leg.

you are looking at a deadly cold snap in poland with unseasonably early snow that's blamed for the deaths of at least two people. a 7-year-old girl was killed in a car accident and a second found dead sleeping on a park bench. that storm also caused traffic disruptions from around the country. some regions got up to 8 inches of snow. >> it's too early for snow. there is also a growing phone scam that preys on people's fears about missing jury duty. >> yeah, another scam. the callers threaten to arrest if you don't pay a fine. abc's clayton sandell explains. >> normally we do not make these calls. >> reporter: it's called the jury duty skwam. >> please proceed to the address and place the defendant in custody. callers telling victims they failed to appear for jury duty and now there's a warrant out for their arrest. >> how do i fix this? i just want to know how to fix it because i've never been in trouble before.

>> reporter: country cover police officers in virginia caught thieves allegedly masquerading as officers just last year, the scammers tell victims to pay up or go to jail. the only way to avoid serving time the scammers claim is to pay a fine. >> it's a growing problem and anyone who loses money to these scammers is one person too many. >> reporter: victims are instructed to get a paypal account, put money on an over-the-counter pre-paid card or ask to give up their debit card and pin numbers. >> they can be convincing and play on ourself doubt. know all of us think maybe we missed something and going to try to get money out of you. >> reporter: police around the country received hundreds of calls from victims. so many of falling prey to the scam, the ftc is issuing an urgent warning. 25-year-old grad student ali was duped by a scammer we pretending to be a deputy from her loyal north carolina sheriff's office. it wasn't till she realized her debit card had been charged $806

our deputy political director joins us on "world news now" with all the highlights. there have been two more emergencies aboard airliners and the latest, a delta jet on its way to atlanta aborted takeoff in jamaica. sensors reported a fire in the cargo hold area and crew evacuated. no fire was found. there was a fire on board an alaska air flight from newark to seattle forcing an emergency landing in buffalo. the fire was in a credit card reader in the galley. alaska will replace those new devices which have a small lithium battery in them with an older version. both incidents followed by less than 24 hours an aborted takeoff in las vegas. and southwest airline operations appear back to normal now. a software problem delayed more than 800 flights sunday. about a fourth of southwest's flights. the airline says there's no indication of hacking but didn't provide any other details about the computer glitch.

southwest was still rebooking passengers and delivering bags yesterday. and one more unusual airplane incident, the texas man who crashed this small plane didn't have a pilot's license and also didn't have permission. he stole the plane to impress his date and ran out of fuel and crashed near the louisiana border. neither of them were hurt. and a much more serious accident in new york city when a coca-cola truck ran off the road and hit a group of people. a woman was killed and six others injured. the victims had been waiting for a bus. eyewitnesss say the truck driver lost control when he was cut off by another vehicle. the state department is calling on iran to release an american reporter convicted of espionage over the weekend. jason rezaian has been held for more than a year in iran. there's no word on his sentence. he faces up to 20 years in prison. the california native works for the "washington post." its executive editor is blasting the trial in tehran. >> this is an outrage. the whole process has been

contemptible. >> the trial unfolded in secret with no evidence of wrongdoing. rezaian's family and lawyers are pushing for his release on bail. the american dentist who admitted killing cecil the lion is no longer a wanted man in africa. a zimbabwe cabinet minister says the july hunt that resulted in the renown lion's death was legal. james walter palmer may return to the country as a tourist but not hunting. palmer was ostracized after the lion's death and briefly went into hiding. things are slowly getting back to normal in south carolina following the deadly floods. a section of i-95 swamped by the historic flood awards reopened for the first time in eight days. the northbound lanes remain closed. many students in some of the hardest hit areas have returned to school. the governor is promising to rebuild, but she refused to speculate on how much it will cost. and animal shelter volunteers are in north carolina

face up to 20 years in prison. rezaian, an american citizen of iranian descent has been held in custody for nearly 450 days. he was the paper's tehran bureau chief. rezaian's brother says the u.s. and iran could do more to secure his freedom. the u.s. navy marked a solemn anniversary on monday. the terror attack of the "u.s.s. cole" in the port of yemen 15 years ago. a small ceremony was held in norfolk, virginia. the ship is now a floating memorial. 17 americans were killed in the attack. the alleged master mind behind the bombing has never been tried. he's being held at guantanamo bay. breaking overnight, tragedy at the scene of an inferno in kansas city. two firefighters died battling this blaze at an apartment building. the building was determined to be unsafe and all were getting out when it collapsed on them. the kansas city fire chief called it, quote, the worst day. two other firefighters were hurt. two residents were rescued and pulled to safety.
