in delaware with family. sprinting at his granddaughter's cross country meet. but dodging questions about whether he plans to run for the white house. >> everyone wants to know, are you -- >> get out of my way, will you? >> reporter: president obama weighing in on "60 minutes" with nothing but praise for biden. >> i think joe will go down as one of the finest vice presidents in history, and one of the more consequential. i think he has done great work. >> reporter: the president will not say whether biden should enter the race, but national polls show clinton with a commanding lead and biden trailing far behind. but he could cost her crucial votes in the iowa and new hampshire where she's locked in a battle with bernie sanders. if she can weather that storm, new polls out show her way ahead in the next two states. a 25-point lead in south carolina and a 16-point advantage here in nevada. where clinton faces rivals like sanders who is promising to play nice. >> i mean, i happen to respect and like hillary clinton. so i don't get into personal attacks. you know that. but are there differences of

teenagers who had allegedly attacked israelis with knifes. the violence is escalating and israel is having trouble containing it. things are slowly getting back to norm in south carolina following deadly floods. a section of i-95 swamped by the historic floodwaters is reopened to traffic for the first time in eight days, but the northbound lanes remain closed. many students returned to school. governor is promising to rebuild but refused to speculate how much it will cost. meanwhile, neighboring north carolina is seeing another side effect from that historic rainfall. more mosquitos. some parts of the state have seen an uptick in the population. some of those blood suckers have tested positive for west nile virus in one county. everyone urged to take precautions. mets fans wanted to see chase outley punished for the slide that broke ruben tejada's leg.

"world news now." >> good morning on this tuesday. i'm ryan smith. >> so many stories and welcome back. >> i know. great to be here. great to be back. you know, big story with those orphan sisters. right? >> my gosh. how could you not know your sister was working in the same hospital. it's a pretty remarkable story. >> it's like fate brought them together. >> we're going to kick off the big night tonight. big, big night for democrats. who wants to be president? just hours away from squaring off for the first time those democrats. >> that's right. hillary clinton arrived in las vegas on the eve of the democratic debate and promptly took a jab at donald trump. she showed up unannounced at a labor rally outside his hotel to support his workers trying to unionize. but tonight clinton will be up against bernie sanders and the three lesser known candidates hoping for a breakout moment. and it's your voice, your vote. we begin with abc's karen travers. >> reporter: las vegas has been the side of legendary prize fighters. it's round one for the democratic presidential

contenders. front and center for the first debate, front-runner hillary clinton. to her right vermont senator bernie sanders who keeps inching up in the polls. it's a high stakes showdown and an opportunity for her rivals to go after her head to head on the issues hurting her in the polls. president obama weighed in on the ongoing controversy over her personal e-mail serve is on "60 minutes." >> she made a mistake. she's acknowledged it. >> reporter: looming large over the democratic field is vice president joe biden. debate organizers still hoping joe biden surprises everyone and shows up. they even have a podium ready for him just in case. sources tell abc news the vp will announce his campaign plans this week. biden spent the weekend in delaware with family but gave no hints of his plans to reporters. >> get out of my way, will you? >> reporter: the president said biden will make his own decision, but had big praise for his number two. >> i think joe will go down as one of the finest vice presidents in history.

and one of the more consequential. he has done great work. >> reporter: the first two republican debates had record television ratings. the democrats are getting a much later start. that first republican debate was two months ago. but with only five candidates on stage, ryan and reena, there could be much more opportunity to break through. >> karen, thank you. in addition to hillary clinton on stage tonight, there will be senator bernie sanders, as we mentioned the three other democrats include maryland's former governor martin o'malley, former senator jim webb and rhode island's former governor lincoln chafee. and unlike the first gop debates, the democratic face-off is not expected to be a ratings bonanza. donald trump is predicting people will tune in for a couple minutes and probably fall asleep. clinton and sanders have suggested they plan to avoid personal attacks and the focus is on the issues. by contrast the republicans ripped into one another. attracting more than 20 million viewers for each debate. incredible. be sure to tune in tomorrow morning for post debate analysis.

our deputy political director joins us on "world news now" with all the highlights. there have been two more emergencies aboard airliners and the latest, a delta jet on its way to atlanta aborted takeoff in jamaica. sensors reported a fire in the cargo hold area and crew evacuated. no fire was found. there was a fire on board an alaska air flight from newark to seattle forcing an emergency landing in buffalo. the fire was in a credit card reader in the galley. alaska will replace those new devices which have a small lithium battery in them with an older version. both incidents followed by less than 24 hours an aborted takeoff in las vegas. and southwest airline operations appear back to normal now. a software problem delayed more than 800 flights sunday. about a fourth of southwest's flights. the airline says there's no indication of hacking but didn't provide any other details about the computer glitch.

southwest was still rebooking passengers and delivering bags yesterday. and one more unusual airplane incident, the texas man who crashed this small plane didn't have a pilot's license and also didn't have permission. he stole the plane to impress his date and ran out of fuel and crashed near the louisiana border. neither of them were hurt. and a much more serious accident in new york city when a coca-cola truck ran off the road and hit a group of people. a woman was killed and six others injured. the victims had been waiting for a bus. eyewitnesss say the truck driver lost control when he was cut off by another vehicle. the state department is calling on iran to release an american reporter convicted of espionage over the weekend. jason rezaian has been held for more than a year in iran. there's no word on his sentence. he faces up to 20 years in prison. the california native works for the "washington post." its executive editor is blasting the trial in tehran. >> this is an outrage. the whole process has been

contemptible. >> the trial unfolded in secret with no evidence of wrongdoing. rezaian's family and lawyers are pushing for his release on bail. the american dentist who admitted killing cecil the lion is no longer a wanted man in africa. a zimbabwe cabinet minister says the july hunt that resulted in the renown lion's death was legal. james walter palmer may return to the country as a tourist but not hunting. palmer was ostracized after the lion's death and briefly went into hiding. things are slowly getting back to normal in south carolina following the deadly floods. a section of i-95 swamped by the historic flood awards reopened for the first time in eight days. the northbound lanes remain closed. many students in some of the hardest hit areas have returned to school. the governor is promising to rebuild, but she refused to speculate on how much it will cost. and animal shelter volunteers are in north carolina

are busy trying to find homes for 40 dogs rescued from south carolina's flood zone after owners could not be located. shelters here quickly became overcrowded after dozens of pets were rescued. some will be sent to agencies in the northeast for adoption. can't forget about those dogs. >> absolutely not. for the new york mets, scoring, that's the best revenge, right? the national league champs, national league east champs beat the los angeles dodgers 13-7. don't get mad at me l.a. but the game wasn't really that close. sorry about that, guys. the mets quickly ran out to a seven-run lead. new york lost a heartbreaker saturday night after chase utley slid into ruben tejada and broke his leg. new york fans were incensed. >> it was a tackle. it was illegal. it was sickening. >> i think you're taught from a young age to try to break up double plays. that's winning baseball. >> it's a big deal when the mayor is commenting on it. well, outley is a longtime nemesis for the mets because he used to play for the phillies and they're rivals.

and this is how new orleans bid a final farewell to television cooking legend chef paul prudhomme. fellow clefs in their white uniforms acted as pallbearers for his funeral yesterday. he made his name of first executive american chef of commander's palace. prudhomme passed away last week after a brief illness. he was 75 years old. >> just a legend. that showing with aprons that's a sign of respect right there. a different sight captured on cell phone video in ventura county, california. video captured the dramatic rescue of six people in swift waters near the pier in the port. an 11-year-old girl is listed in critical condition. four others were taken to the

hospital with minor injuries. the controversy is deepening over that police confrontation caught outside of houston, texas. >> we're now hearing for the first time from that local city councilman since he was tasered by police officers outside his own apartment building. elizabeth hur has the latest. >> put your hands up. he's going to have to tase you. you're not doing like you're supposed to. >> reporter: a taser take-down in texas raising questions. >> put your hands behind your back. put your hands behind your back. >> reporter: the incident caught on this police body cam began with city councilman jonathan miller asking officers why three of his friends were being questioned in his front yard. >> i'm not either. senator city council member. >> i know who he is. >> reporter: the video showing tensions quickly escalating. > go over there before you go to jail. turn around. >> i'm not saying nothing. get your hands off me. >> reporter: before miller is tasered on his knees with his

back to police. miller later spoke to houston station khou after he was charged and released from jail. >> it went from me asking questions to me basically being put face down on the ground. i'm curious to have the conversation with the officers. >> reporter: police insisting this was a clear case of resisting arrest. >> we want to make sure we do a complete investigation to make sure that everything is looked at. >> reporter: the police chief also revealing the female officer seen in this video was at the scene during the traffic stop and controversial arrest of sandra bland over the summer. who authorities later found dead hanging in her jail cell. meanwhile, miller was charged with resisting arrest and interfering with public duties. the officers involved are still on the job and the case now under investigation. elizabeth hur, abc news, new york. >> what surprises me about this, there is no statewide policy for acceptable use of a stun gun in texas.

burning, firefighters are told. the crew put that device powered by a lithium ion battery in a trash can and sprayed it with a fire extinguisher. the captain was taking no chances and made the emergency landing. there was an engine fire that forced an allegiant air captain to abort takeoff from las vegas with the jet traveling more than 100 miles an hour, passengers report hearing a pop or a bang. the pilot slammed on the brakes. and firefighters pouring on the waters as passengers watched. >> we're going to sit here for a second. the fire truck is checking. everything is fine. >> reporter: a member of the crew offering an explanation. >> the brakes, slightly hot. by the time he came in, a little smoke came out of it. >> reporter: before passengers headed for another aircraft. three unrelated incidents but one thing in common in all of them, the crews moved very quickly and by the book to protect the passengers.

david kerley, abc news, reagan washington airport. hillary clinton is preparing to take on her fellow democrats in tonight's debate. but yesterday she took aim at the republican front-runner, clinton attended a labor protest in the shadow of donald trump's las vegas hotel calling on him to represent all of the people of the united states. meanwhile, don't expect to see former president bill clinton in the audience tonight. he arrived in vegas with his wife, but does not plan to attend the debate. hillary clinton's commanding lead in the polls earned her the prime spot on center stage tonight. all five candidates will try to distinguish themselves from the rest of the pack. it could be a make or break night for former governors martin o'malley, lincoln chafee and former senator jim webb. bernie sanders made it clear we won't see the kind of fireworks that were on display at the gop debates. >> i mean, i happen to respect and like hillary clinton. so i don't get into the personal attacks. you know that. but are there differences of opinion that should be discussed? of course, there are. that's what an election is

about. >> even though sanders is trailing clinton in the polls he's still attracting enormous crowds. poll numbers for the other three candidates have been stuck in the single digits. and the republican presidential hopefuls will certainly be keeping a close eye on tonight's debate. after the feisty gop battle drew millions of viewers donald trump is predicting the democrats will put the country to sleep. and it's your voice, your vote. for more now, abc's jonathan karl. >> reporter: he was the main attraction at republican debates that have drawn record audiences, but in new hampshire, donald trump predicts the democratic showdown will be a snooze. >> well, i think it's not going to be very well rated. because trump isn't in the debate, i am only kidding. i think it's not going to be highly rated, i think it's going to be watched for 10 or 15 minutes, people are going to get bored and turn it off. >> reporter: trump's decisive lead in the republican primary battle shows no sign of waning. in the latest national poll, fellow outsider ben carson is the only one close.

all the others are in single digits. but on "60 minutes," president obama dismissed trump as a passing phenomenon. >> he's, you know, the classic reality tv character, and at this early stages, it's not surprising that he's gotten a lot of attention. >> reporter: you think he's running out of steam? i mean, you think he's going to disappear? >> you know, i'll leave it up to the pundits to make that determination. i don't think he'll end up being president of the united states. >> reporter: in response, trump offered his own critique of president obama. >> i watched president obama last night on television. he bombed, very simply. >> one person virtually certain to be watching the democratic debate is joe biden. even his closest advisors say they don't know whether or not he will ultimately pull the trigger and run for president. but they do say he is running out of time and expected that by the end of the week, we will know whether or not biden is running. jonathan karl, abc news, new york. iran's guilty verdict of a "washington post" reporter for spying is being widely condemned. it's unclear if jason rezaian has been sentenced but he could

face up to 20 years in prison. rezaian, an american citizen of iranian descent has been held in custody for nearly 450 days. he was the paper's tehran bureau chief. rezaian's brother says the u.s. and iran could do more to secure his freedom. the u.s. navy marked a solemn anniversary on monday. the terror attack of the "u.s.s. cole" in the port of yemen 15 years ago. a small ceremony was held in norfolk, virginia. the ship is now a floating memorial. 17 americans were killed in the attack. the alleged master mind behind the bombing has never been tried. he's being held at guantanamo bay. breaking overnight, tragedy at the scene of an inferno in kansas city. two firefighters died battling this blaze at an apartment building. the building was determined to be unsafe and all were getting out when it collapsed on them. the kansas city fire chief called it, quote, the worst day. two other firefighters were hurt. two residents were rescued and pulled to safety.

there were flags and hugs and tears, as well as classes resumed at the community college in roseburg, oregon, for the first time since the deadly shooting there. lines of people waving flags and signs greeted students and faculty at umpqua community college on monday. nine people were killed and nine others were wounded. nearly two weeks ago during the shooting. state troopers and sheriffs deputies patrolled the grounds. if you're going to drink and drive, you probably don't want to advertise it. right? police say that's exactly what this 23-year-old woman did using an app on her smartphone. periscope lets you streamline to the internet. she says she's drunk and police were amazed. >> i'm driving home drunk. >> and you hear her saying she's drunk. >> i just don't understand people these days. i don't get it. somehow there wasn't an accident. no one was hurt. several viewers called 911. using landmarks in the live stream, police were able to figure out where she was and
