you can see on the screen, flashing lights on the span. some northbound lanes heading to the golden gate bridge were shut down but just reopened moments ago. the chp says they had to close the lanes until they knew the fire was not going to spread. you can get updates throughout the next hour on this newscast as well as on twitter abc7 news bay area, good evening, everybody, i'm larry beil. >> i'm ama daetz. now, we get to our other top story out of southern california. powerful images showing a major mudslide in the angeles national forest. trees, and homes were wiped out by a wall of mud. taking a look overhead, search teams are scouring parts of lancaster and lake hume for drivers who may be stuck in their cars.

mudslides started around three hours ago after a sudden, powerful thunderstorm dumped upwards of 4 to 5 inches of rain in the area. >> we have video showing a wall of mud shah washed out roads, and homes, properties have been covered and in cases several feet of mud. drivers stuck, look at the white car, you can't see it, have been rescued by others but the cars are immobilized by the damage. caltrans closed a busy interstate 5 through the grapevine because of the mud out of the freeway there. the video was captured by driver kathy swain, waiting to be rescued. the patrol says the freeway is going to be closed another 10-15 hours. the national weather service issued a flash flood warning. more strong showers and thunderstorms are expected

throughout the evening. spencer christian joins us with the accuweather update. weather has been turbulent because of the upper level low kicking up stormy conditions now north of los angeles into bakersfield and into san joaquin valley. we have had reports of 2 to 3 inches of rainfall this afternoon across this region north of los angeles. so six reports of flash floods, three reports of funnel clouds, three reports of hail. rain continues to fall here. los angeles has had greater than 600% of the normal rainfall for the time of the year since july 1. this could become a familiar scene going into winter because of el nino. >> the images out of southern california could become more prevalent throughout the winter season. this is el nino. a lot of us remember when the

one of san francisco's busiest streets. happened on 8th street, near market. construction workers alerted officers to a man throwing glass bottles. a scuffle broke out and one officer fell to the ground with a man on top of him. the confrontation turned deadly. >> the sergeant on the ground yelled to his partner he's getting my gun, he's got my gun, shoot him. >> the officer shot and killed the man. this is the fifth shooting involving a san francisco police officer this year and all have been fatalities. we turn now to abc7 reporter melanie woodrow. a crowd is gathering to protest the shooting. melanie, what's happening now? >> reporter: until just a moment ago, we saw quite a few protestors holding up big signs sim rar to this postcard with

the phrase wise up october. they say they plan to travel to new york city to protest police brutality. before they get there, many stopped here. we heard from police that the individual who was shot had grabbed for a weapon, a lot of families here say they question the details around the story, and want more information. they also tell me that they really feel for the victim's family if this individual had family. i spoke to a couple of parents who drove here to san francisco from stockton today, as soon as they heard about the officer involved shooting because they say that their son also died at the hands of police and they wanted to be here to lend their support. i'll have their part of the story coming up tonight at 11:00. for now, live in san francisco,
