inches expected. there is higher terrain there. that means there is potential for mudslides and flash flooding in the area. obviously, it is going to be a long night for folks out there. i'm hearing from people who have family and friends in the area, hopefully they all stay safe. larry? >> thank you, sandhya. >> san francisco is the home for many immigrants -- >> abc 7 news reporter, david louie joins us live at a catholic church in san jose where many are gathering to pray for their families. david? >> reporter: larry this evening's 5:30 mass will carry special meaning today. that's because families of those with loved ones in that area of mexico will be saying special prayers for their relatives safety and welfare. they have brothers and sisters, parents and grandparents living in the area.

genevieve car mona fears for her family. >> she tried calling. she's been calling the past few days and tried calling earlier today. they didn't pick up. she's hoping for the best. >> marina cortez is concerned it will take a long time for help to reach her family on a ranch in a rural area. >> they're not too close to the ocean but she's concerned about the help getting to them. sometimes they will say help it on the way and it can take days to get the help. >> it will be difficult to work out logistics until the extent of damage is known. the president of the san jose based international is in guadalajara today. he knows from past experience, infrastructure will be a big challenge. >> from that area of mexico, we saw a lot of bridges washed away. we know that the people will need food, water, proper clothing. especially stuff for the kids, the babies.

>> he estimates there are 200,000 immigrants in the south bay. the two states expected to take the brunt of hurricane patricia. the mexican consulate in san francisco will be working to locate relatives displaced by patricia and let family here know their status. in san jose, david louie, abc 7 news. well, the hurricane is all but shut down the coastal areas of puerto vallarta, manzanillo and punt anita. a lot of resort guests are being evacuated about 25 miles away. earlier today we talked with a woman from los angeles. she's in guadalajara after leaving puerto vallarta in the middle of the night. >> most of the gas stations have run out of fuel. there's no food at the supermarkets. there's a mass exodus. we've been sitting in the lobby of the hotel all afternoon and we just found a private plane and we are getting the last

private plane out of here to guadalajara. >> when we checked last, she was still waiting for that flight. good luck and be safe. alaska airlines canceled flights from sfo to puerto vallarta this morning as well as the returns from that popular mexican destination. the airline notified passengers in advance and expects they'll be doing the same tomorrow. there were also cancellations today because of heavy rains in dallas. >> they're not going to want to run a large number of flights into a region that could potentially see stranded flights, diverted flights. they don't want to get into that gamble anymore. >> forecasters are expecting hurricane patricia to bring heavy storms to the southwest next week, especially in texas. flights between sfo and the lonestar state could be affected. let's turn now to abc 7 news meteorologist drew tuma to show us how this hurricane developed so quickly into the worst on record. drew? >> cheryl, very quickly. just in the past 24 hours, it went from a tropical storm to a

major category 5 hurricane. you really need two basic ingredients for this. very warm ocean water and very calm wind where the storm develops. the first thing, our ocean temperature. this was the track it took. hurricane patricia right here. look at the ocean water temperatures. it went through 88 degrees fahrenheit. 89 degrees fahrenheit. this is high octane fuel for storms. the second ingredient that the storm had, very calm winds. we'll take you to 35,000 feet in the atmosphere, basically in jet plane fly. this is where the wind really steers storms. you can see around the hurricanes, very calm winds. you in the this blue. that is very strong winds in the atmosphere. once it encounters those strong winds, it gets ripped apart like a knife through cake. it goes from a category 5 storm to a tropical storm in less than 24 hours. really just two essential ingredients came together at the right time to create major category 5 storm. cheryl? >> drew, thank you so much. the national hurricane center says the wind measurement makes

patricia the strongest hurricane on record. in this case, the measurements have added weight because it comes from live hurricane hunters in the air force. typically the it comes from at satellite imagery. this is video from the hurricane hunters on the -- from the airport. the hurricane center says without their hard work, they wouldn't have any idea how strong patricia really is. >> christy sent us this picture from her view of puerto vallarta. look at that parking lot outside the hotel getting slammed by rain. powerful surf pounds the beach under sunny skies in cabo san lucas. it's more than 300 miles from where patricia is making landfall. vacationing san francisco firefighter garrett lieu seer shot this video. a resort worker said these are the biggest waves to hit that area in ten years. if you get pictures, please share them with us. send us photos or video at #abc

7 now. we have very important other news of the day. a dangerous drug being sold on the streets of san francisco. public health officials are sending out a warning. the counterfeit version of xanax has already caused one death. abc 7 news reporter vic lee joins us with more. >> reporter: cheryl, one death and several overdoses and there may be more that the health department doesn't know about. usually they'll contact the drug clinics or needle exchange programs to spread the word about bad drugs, but in this case, they wanted to reach out through the media because some of the people who o.d.' d were not drug addicts. >> nerve damage, muscle breakdown with possible kidney damage. fluid in the lungs and then one individual who was found dead. >> this doctor is talking about four people who took fake xanax pills they bought on the streets of san francisco. three almost died, the fourth never made it to the hospital. >> the xanax pill is oftentimes

bought on the streets by people who want to come down or cool off after a night of partying or something like that. >> reporter: what they bought instead was an extremely potent drug called fentanyl. >> it's relatively new on the street scene. and seeing it packaged in a pill is new for us. >> reporter: the first fentanyl outbreak in san francisco happened this summer. >> there was a white powder being sold as heroin that resulted in four times our yush overdoses. >> it's become a popular drug among young people. >> several students had to be rushed to the hospital after they took the drug. in this case, the health department confirmed that the xanax pills were real. >> it functions lot like an epipen. it talks to you.

>> container has no needle or drug. >> the health department says it's been supplying needle exchange in drug treatment clinics with -- an antidote that can combat fentanyl. it's an injectable and as a spray. vic lee, abc 7 news. oakland police and the fbi arrested 15 suspected gang members in a major raid across the city. more than 100 officers confiscated assault rifles, hand guns, more than 100 marijuana plants, cocaine and cash. this is all at various locations. they were known gang members involved in violent crimes. all this previously taken part in operation cease-fire to help them get straight. >> we took a proactive measure to let them know we cared about them and that we did not stop the violence. that we were going to follow-up on our promise to hold them accountable. >> investigators are also questioning those arrested today about a man who was found shot

to death near skyline boulevard in oakland. they believe that was a retaliation killing. a shootout across the street from a high school. coming up, what happened when the bullets flew in san leandro. >> plus, the life-saving study at stanford and the 10-year-old twins bringing hope for others for the rare disease. >> just in time for halloween. the costume component health officials say you need to avoid. we're going to feed you and then make you a bit better

heavy rains are battering mexico's pacific coast. hurricane patricia made landfall a short time ago. alejandro guerrero tweeted this video showing the torrential downpour with powerful winds.

we'll keep tracking the storm along with our weather team here. you can follow us on twitter for the latest updates on abc 7 news bay area. >> the police response to a suicidal man in a neighborhood ended in an exchange with gunfire. it prompted the lockdown of two nearby high schools. janet owe joins us now with more. janet? >> reporter: cheryl, neighbors and high school students were rattled by this morning's shooting. san leandro police department wrapped up a news conference a short while ago and they confirmed the suspect involved in the shootout will be taken into custody and face charges of attempted murder of a police officer. family members called police hoping to help their loved one who threatened to kill himself. he holed up in his car on 137th avenue. armed with a handgun. sky 7 hd shows the scene. this normally quiet neighborhood as well as san leandro high school were both on lockdown. >> right next to my old high school. so i wanted to come and check it

out and see exactly what was going on. >> whatever happened next even police are not quite sure. they say officers felt threatened and opened fire. >> officers forced to make critical decisions on a moment's notice. >> trained in hostage negotiations tried to negotiate what the armed suspect before the exchange of gunfire. they were wearing body cameras which will be a critical piece of evidence. >> the information will be reviewed. that will help us understand from the officer's perspective through their body camera what happened today. >> it's not clear if the 46-year-old suspect shot himself or if he was shot by officers. he is now in stable condition. >> they're shocked the violence spilled out in broad daylight. >> it's surprising for this neighborhood. but -- >> scary. i don't know. >> alameda county district attorney's office will be conducting an independent investigation. in san lee an row, abc 7 news.

there was another shooting near and east bay school in richmond. officers found a 19-year-old man with a gunshot wound on burk avenue and south 41st street adjacent to kennedy high school. police say the man was not a student but the school was placed on lockdown anyway while they investigated. the 19-year-old listed in critical condition. they've identified the man suspected of stabbing three workers inside a pitsburg grocery store. 34-year-old anthony jar mill owe was identify frd this photo. there's a photo. they confronted him about stealing razors before being stabbed. he's still being sought by police to say he may be armed. >> a bay area group is joining a nationwide protest against police shootings. they held a vigil this afternoon at san francisco city hall. they read the names of people shot by police officers. >> their protests are forcing

the country to look more critically at shootings involving police officers. only when people rose up and went into the streets did the government have to take notice and even mention that they might start counting. >> we want the murders to stop. >> today's vigil is part of a series of -- they continue tomorrow with a giant march in manhattan. >> san francisco has released the final environmental impact report for the golden state warriors. it includes three volumes responding to concerns from neighbors. the report adds special access to hospital patients and staff. it increases the number of parking control officers and as more muni vehicles. a special fund will pay for the additional costs. >> opponents criticize the timing of the release of the report 11 days before voters are asked to approve the project. santa clara public health

officials linked 141 cases of shigella to the mexican restaurant in san jose. most who contracted that extremely contagious bacterial illness live in santa clara counties and alameda, santa cruz and san mateo county. the restaurant is still shut down and they expect lab results from all food handlers back by next week. public health officials are issuing a warning to anybody using those contact lens this is halloween, watch out. usually sold as color cosmetic fashion or contact lenses, they're not sold by prescription, they can cause serious injury or blindness. be careful with that. there is new hope for a rare and incurable disease tonight. families from all over the country are traveling to stanford for a new study. abc 7 news apg or, natasha met with -- they're 10-year-old twins and she joins you now. >> they have an incredibly rare

disease. there are 500 cases in the u.s. unfortunately, there's no cure. stanford is one. only places doing research which is brought the 10-year-olds here today. you wouldn't know they're battling a rare and incurable disease but their parents strong and hopeful, know the reality. the average life span for people with the disease is only 27 years. their father, kevin, wonders if he'll ever walk jenna down the aisle. >> only every day. sorry. well, you just want them to live a normal life. they don't really know what that is. we do. >> a huge part of aging with cyst know sis is the deterioration of bone and muscle. that's what the study at stanford is about. cutting-edge data captured information on their bones and muscles in great detail. i'll explain why all of this is giving their mother hope tonight and you'll hear straight from

the twins coming up at 6:00. >> abc 7 news. we look forward to that. >> natasha, see you at 6:00. let's turn to the forecast now and we're interested in the weekend forecast here as well as what's going on in mexico. >> so much going on. sandhya. >> a lot of cloud cover behind me. live doppler 7 hd. hurricane patricia as well. our doppler has been tracking the storm. we're seeing a lot of cloud cover locally. that's what you're probably seeing outside. but take a look at this storm. it's the strongest measured hurricane ever in the western hemisphere. made land fauld at 4:15 along the southwest coast of mexico. i did get a post from somebody on facebook that said there is no electricity or power in manzanillo. the government decided to cut the power to prevent major problems. guadalajara has been raining strong for 24 hours, expecting more rain. i have family in manzanillo and guadalajara. we hope that family and your friends and loved ones stay safe

there. from the east bay hills, a beautiful view as the sunsets here in about an hour. san francisco 65 degrees. low 70s in mountain view. 76 san jose. half moon bay, 63 degrees. high so far, low 60s to mid-80s. you can see the clouds stacked up looking towards the financial district. mid-70s from santa rosa to napa. 84 degrees in livermore. a beautiful view. you're seeing some peeks of blue. they'll be with us tonight with fog. mild fall day tomorrow with the possibility of spripg ls sunday morning. satellite, radar showing you what's going on. high pressure is not exactly a strong ridge of high pressure. but it hold on tomorrow. it will be dry for your saturday. weak cold front comes in sunday and really unfortunately, what we're only going to get out of it is maybe an isolated sprinkle or two. sunday morning. i wouldn't change up your plans for the weekend if you do have them. they include the outdoors for a sunday. we're going to go beyond sunday

next week. moisture from current hurricane olaf leftovers of it. expected to still link up with a cold front. wednesday morning, we have a chance of rain in the bay area. of course, the best chance is going to be in the north bay. rainfall totals could be anywhere from a tenth to a half an inch. the california river, nevada forecast center is forecasting, though, up to an inch in the wettest north balow indications. far northern end of sonoma county. tomorrow morning, mid to upper 40s in the cooler spots. the rest in the 50s. as you get going, you'll notice there's fog around for your saturday morning at the coast. high clouds around as well. not too bad in terms of the chill in the air. thanks to the cloud cover. tomorrow afternoon, 80 in san jose in the south bay. 85 gilroy. 78 sunnyvale. 82 los gatos. 75 in san mateo. 65 in pacifica. really a nice day. downtown san francisco. 71 dally city.
