broadcast center. this is abc7 news. >> look at that wind. the strongest measured hurricane ever in the western hem -- hemisphere and it hit just after 4:00. dan ashley and ama daetz have the night off. reports of flooding and land slides after hurricane patricia came on shore. no word of fatalities or major damage right now. mexico's president says the damage is actually smaller than expected. thousands of people were evacuated along the southwest coast of mexico. residents and tourists moved inland and those who could not get out simply tried to take cover. we have team coverage and we start in the newsroom with abc7 news reporter melanie woodrow with the latest. >> as hurricane patricia made

resident cindy cow -- cowan was determined to get home. >> we are getting on the last private plane. >> she made it back home to so cal. despite a slight weakening damage could be devastating. >> what happens tomorrow? will we be here? what is the rest of the area going to look like even if we are safe? we can't answer that question right now. >> abc7 news. >> you can hear the strength of the storm. the video was shot this evening in the mexican state of jalisco. let's go now to sandhya patel for a look at where hurricane patricia is right now. >> yeah, that storm has moved inland. let's show you live doppler 7hd and you will notice the hurricane does not have the same shape it did earlier. as it hits up against the mountainous terrain, it is actually tearing up the

hurricane. a category 5 hurricane as it made landfall and it was actually packing maximum sustained winds. the strongest measured hurricane ever in the western hemisphere. it weakened to a category two. winds of 100 miles an hour. it is moving to the north, northeast and it is expecting to weaken to a tropical storm. here is what the moisture is doing. this picture was posted by one of my followers on facebook. a friend sent this to him and she posted it from mexico. streets turned into rivers and they will be seeing more damage like that. isolated amounts of rainfall up to 20 inches in the area. hopefully if you have friends and family there they stay safe. so far what i'm hearing from people on social media is they are safe. larry? >> thank you, sandhya. here is a look at the storm from nasa and you can see how big patricia is.

the video was taken shortly after the storm was upgraded to a powerful category 5 hurricane. this was an image tweeted by astronaut scott kelly on the international spacestation. he said "patricia's force ant lost -- isn't lost on me." it is a scary video being shared on social media. this one shows a truck. it is a big rig that flipped over as it lost control in the gusting winds. if you have family and friends in mexico and they send you pictures or video of patricia, share them with us with the # abc sf news. a special mass in san jose was dedicated to people with family members in the path of the hurricane. it was being held as the storm made landfall. >> children lead the procession of parishioners caring heart-shaped mexican flags. many in the sanctuary have family in the path of the storm.

rolando lorenzo has been exchanging messages to his sister in puerto vallarta. he showed this picture of evacuation by boat to shelters. >> right now it is not safe. more important is the life. >> the chance to come together and prayer. most people don't have information about loved ones. >> yolanda hernandez says prayer is important because she has faith that the virgin of guadeloupe will protect her family from the storm. this spcial mass is the first step in what parish leaders say will booy a re-- will be a relief effort after the storm. >> we will be communicating with the family members. we will be working with the diocese and mobilizing people for information and for donations through catholic relief services. >> the sanctuary will remain open for people to come and pray for loved ones and they

can donate money at the church or on-line. the funds well be funneled to communities hit by the storm. abc7 news. >> the american red cross is readying volunteers and resources if called on for help by the mexican red cross. the agency is ready to provide first-aid, logistics and relief distributions as well as shelter if needed. alaska airlines canceled the once daily flight to pew puerto vallarta. it had nothing to do with the hurricane. it was rain that grounded hundreds of flights in dallas. and they could see more scenes like this as it moved northward into the united states. flooded roads delayed drivers in the dallas fort worth metroplex of the warnings were out urging people to expect the worst. >> take normal precautions and for the most part once that

rain starts, we decide to stay home. >> emergency managers say they have helicopters and rescue swimmers ready to help people who are trapped by flooding across texas. stay with abc7 news for the latest on patricia. we will have the latest video and the current path of the storm on the abc7 morning news that starts at 5:00 a.m. new at 11:00, two men are safe after spending more than two hours trapped on the seed of a cliff in the marin head lands. the coast guard used a helicopter to rescue the men from the area between bird island and the lighthouse. this was just after 7:00 tonight. they were out there hiking with three others and one of the men wandered off. he ended up 150 feet down the side of a cliff. his friend tried to rescue him and they both ended up gting stuck. the men were cold and thirsty, but thankfully not hurt. students at san jose state university hahn gnarred a -- honored a water polo player who died at practice.

friends and classmates held a candlelight vigil. he collapsed last tuesday and never regained consciousness. they shared video of his love of life and unique sense of humor. the number of cases has risen to 141. santa clara public health officials say it is linked to number three restaurant in san jose. the cases have been reported in santa clara and alameda and san mateo and santa cruz counties. some patients never actually ate at the restaurant. they got the disease from close contact from people who did. there is a warning tonight about a fake prescription drug that is being sold on the streets of san francisco. it is a unit coulder fit version of -- counterfeit version of xanax and it has already caused one death. the fake drug seen on the right here was found to be a poe at the present time -- potent opiate called fentanyl. it can cause muscle break down

palo alto. >> police captured a man they believed stabbed three people in a grocery store. they used helicopters and dogs to hunt him down this afternoon. alan wang joins us live from the scene of last night's crime. alan? >> last night the entrance was spattered with blood and they were desperate to find this guy. while thisy were staking out -- while they were staking out several places he came walking out of his mother's home. >> police arrested 43-year-old anthony just after 4:00 p.m. they were preparing to search his mother's house in old downtown pittsburgh when he walked out not realizing the police were there. they immediately arrested him without incident. he lived six miles away until he wase vehicled -- until he was evicted. >> we didn't even know he was

living there. it was not long. >> police say he tried to steal some shaving razors and that's when he was confronted by five employees at the entrance. >> we see somebody who will steal -- it is never one person who goes out there and a group of people. it is just for safety reasons. >> they say he pulled out a knife. >> i saw blood on the floor. somebody was laying down with a stab wound on his back. somebody else was stabbed in the shoulder. >> and a third employee was stabbed in the arm. he was released from the hospital. the one who was stabbed in the back is in critical condition. the other is stable. alan wang, abc7 news. a toon age girl is safe tonight after fighting off a man who was trying to kidnap her. you are about to hear her screams for help. it happened while she walked to school in stockton before sunrise this morning. the girl told detectives the

man got out of a car and grabbed her and tried to pull her into his vehicle. police believe the suspect then sped away from the scene. want to update you on the latest on hurricane patricia. the monster storm has weakened to a category 4 after making land fall this afternoon. it is in a lightly populated area of southwest mexico. mexico's president said the damage is smaller than expected. 15,000 tourists evacuated ahead of the storm and spending the night in shelters. the storm remains dangerous, but so far no reports of damage, injuries or deaths. you can get a feeling of what it is like to be in a hurricane without leaving the bay area. they have an exhibit on hurricanes and it has an eye and it simulates the wind shear that simulates the motion. >> it spins faster and faster and faster like when an ice skater brings her arms in and

the angular momentum and it creates the core of the hurricane. >> the scientists say it gets harder to track the hurricane's path after it makes land fall after it is so wide. we spent a lot of time talking about the hurricane. let's focus on the weekend weather. >> it has weakened to a category 2. as we look at what is to come it is a beautiful view from the emeryville camera. the sun went down at 6:22 and you saw all of the different hues there of the they will be with us heading into saturday. right now tracking some fog along the coastline. the temperatures are quite comfortable. 50s and 60s across the bay area. right now from our sutro camera we are watching the fog over san francisco. it has been going in and out. your morning will start out with the fog and high clouds. a mild fall day. we are looking at possibilities into sunday morning.

high pressure is controlling our weather. you will see the filtered sunshine and then here comes the weak cold front. unfortunately the moisture with this system is going well to the north of us. all we are expecting sunday morning is isolated sprinkles. ukiah has a chance of light showers. the rest of you are looking at a sprinkle or two and by the afternoon the sun breaks through of the fog lingers along the coastline. this system will be what is left of what is now hurricane olaf in the pacific. the moisture is expected to get wrapped up with the cold front. a chance of rain steel looks like it is -- still looks like it is happening and it will start to pull away. the rainfall totals looking like a 10th to half an inch. some of the wettest locations could see an inch of rain so stay tuned. first thing in the morning, the visibility will be pour. if you have to get your kids off to a game, you may want to allow a little more time.
