>> good morning, everyone, i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, october 25th. let's start with a quick look at our weather. you see the high and mid-level clouds across the entire bay area. its associated a very weak cold front. unfortunately we are looking at just a few light sprinkles for some of you, mainly in the north bay. then we will dry out and clear out. 57 in hayward right now. it's 59 in fremont. 61 antioch and livermore. and with the cloud cover, numbers are anywhere from 5 to 6 degrees warmer in the inland east bay. a caller finish and we will

pinpoint where the raindrops may fall coming up this a few minutes. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. developing news out of livermore this morning. the police are looking for two men they believe shot two people inside a car in a parking lot last night. it happened around 6:00 p.m. on first street. one of the victims died. the other was rushed to hospital. his condition is not known at this time. police say the suspects drove off in a 2006 black bmw with two red racing stripes on the hood. chp officers spotted the car on 580 in san leandro, but lost the car in oakland. detectives say they don't believe the suspects do not live in livermore. >> these types of incidents don't happen in livermore. it sounds like these two were the intended target. >> the two men they are looking for are armed with an assault rifle. witnesses at the scene described one of the men as a black man,

tall, thin build and wearing a gray beanie. the description for the second suspect is unknown >> more developing news, this time out of napa county. a deadly car crash killed at least one person last night in american canyon. it happened near highway 29 and eucalyptus drive in front of the sonic drive-in around 11:30. the northbound lanes of the highway were investigated as they investigated the scene. no word if anyone else was involved in the crash or any other injuries. the chp is investigating a crash that killed five people were killed last night in a head-on collision on highway 120 near smith station road in the groveland area. one of the vehicles was registered in san jose. no word on a cause. abc7 news spoke exclusively with the man injured in a bizarre chase and crash that started with a stolen police car yesterday.

>> now he's going backwards. heads up, get out of the way. shots fired! shots fired! >> those are the radio calls from the bridge. sergio quintana has the story. >> this is video of the suspect you will see only on abc7 news. he's the man who led police on a chase through the city in a stolen police s.u.v. it's a pursuit that ended right behind muhammad. >> it hit me and my car accelerated into the car ahead of me. >> from sky 7hd you can see where the police s.u.v. slammed into his marine -- maroon cadillac, but he was surprised to see someone who was not an officer jump out of that police vehicle. >> they jumped over my vehicle and then jumped over the bridge. it was all very frightening not knowing quite what was going on. >> he said a policeman also jumped over the ledge to the lower level of the bay bridge. that's where officers were able

to make an arrest. this chase started miles away in the marina district. police were called there to deal with the man waving a knife, but he got away. >> and was able to make entry into the officer's marked patrol vehicle and actually steal the vehicle from the officer that still had the keys in the ignition. >> that's when he led the police on a chase through the city. >> a lot of cop cars going up and down the valencia streets, and, undercover cars going up the street. he saw it and later was caught in traffic coming back into the city on the bay bridge. he said it tack him two hours to get back. abc7 news. >> this man, sergio manriques, faces accusations of having a stolen handgun that belongs to a highway patrol officer. san francisco police arrested him after stopping manriques for

a suspected traffic violation friday night. he is on probation. that gun vanished after someone broke into the chp officer's personal car on howard street last sunday night. it had been inside a backpack. investigators want to know what caused a four-acre grass fire that threatened homes in the milpitas hills area. it started around 2:30 yesterday afternoon near the summit point golf course. abc7 news viewer showed these pictures with us showing how dangerously close it burned to homes. a helicopter and an aattack vehicle dropped fire retardant on the fire. abc7 was at country club drive as it quickly got it under control. with the dry conditions,

neighbors worried it could have been a lot worse. >> i was scared and what we did is put all the valuables in the car and we were ready to take off because it was only a few hundred feet away. >> fortunately no one was hurt. >> the fires left thousands of animals in jeopardy, and now many will go up for adoption. the animal shelter is still housing several animals. the shelter helped nearly 3400 animals during the fire. about 40 still remain. after wednesday, any unclaimed pets will be put up for adoption. now to the aftermath from hurricane patricia. mexico's government said the storm damaged as many as 3500 homes, and downed trees are covering the main road between manzanillo and puerto vallarta. power is now back on in many communities. patricia weakened into a tropical depression yesterday morning after being called the biggest storm on record in the western hemisphere.

so far no reports of any deaths or serious injuries. some 15,000 tourists had to be hastily evacuated. the airport has reopened in puerto vallarta, and many are coming back home. abc news was at sfo and witnessed some of the emotional reunions. here is abc anchor natasha zouves. >> sheer panic, sheer panic. >> watching the hurricane move through, knowing her parents were there and now watching it on the screen. for her there's been no sleep. >> horrible, horrible. we were so scared. we thought nothing was going to survive. and then when the mexico government said it was the biggest hurricane they ever saw, that scared us. we've been up all night. >> hurricane patricia had winds up to 200 miles an hour before coming to shore.

despite that, there were though reports of deaths or injuries in mexico. at long last the reunion >> and we are happy to see our parents. we got so scared, so scared. >> also coming home, brad powell, who road out the hurricane, documenting every moment of his vacation gone wrong on twitter. moving out of the hotel and into a shelter. >> it's such a relief, honestly, just to be back and to be home. can't wait to go pick up our dog and just sit in our kitchen and feel safe again. only 24 hours ago andrew looked at me and said are we going to die here? and it was a serious concern. >> back safe, his last tweet before the four-legged reunion he was looking forward to. he tweeted someone is happy to see his parents made it home from patricia. >> the hurricane made landfall friday along a sparsely populated area of the coast

line. there's still work to be done in those regions. and meanwhile texas is getting drenched this morning by the remnants of patricia. in san antonio a man out walk his dog got swept into a flooded drainage ditch. and it caused this often i don't know pacific freight trail to derail yesterday morning. the rail tracks were washed away by a creek that overflowed. more than 18 inches of rain has fallen there since friday morning. much of the state is under a nash flood watch through at least this around around, and we will have a live report from houston in the next half-hour. seems like rains have tapered off there, lisa? >> just a little bit. looks like the extended outlook, though, is showing heavy rain next weekend there. so the wild weather continues for parts of the country for the bay area. it's very quiet out there with low clouds and high clouds, making for a warmer start. san francisco 58 degrees. it's in the low 60s out for

driver first hit an unmanned police motorcycle, then drove right into the stillwater, oklahoma crowd. >> by the grace of god he could have been my grandchildren. he could have taken him lake that. >> police say 25-year-old adacia chambers was behind the wheel. >> the driver of the car was arrested at this point for driving under the influence. >> the father of the accused driver told the oklahoma newspaper, i can't figure this out. this is not the person that's my daughter. i can't imagine alcohol being involved. she's not an alcoholic that i'm aware of. >> a somber mood, indeed. fans have made their way into the stadium. >> this is a school that lost players and coaches to two separate plane crashes in the past 15 years. this time oklahoma state takes a moment of silence for the loss of their fans. school officials decided to go ahead with the game. >> we are heartbroken at this tragedy, and our thoughts and prayers are with family.

>> and that was reggie reporting. in addition to the four people who died, gave people are in critical condition this morning in oklahoma hospitals. twelve others, including six children, are still in the hospital. >> sky 7hd was over the san rafael-richmond bridge yesterday after a tow truck caused a car to be wedged between the bridge railings. east bound lanes were closed ford more than an hour. no one was hurt. some people you see getting out of their cars, finding some pretty creative ways to pass the time. ian gilligan, a 12-year-old in our abc7now community tweeted this video. he was on his way to a golf tournament when he got stuck in the backup and he used too i am to practice his golf skills right there on the freeway. when you see news where you live, take a photo or video and share it with us using the #abc7news.

mc'd the event for the second year in a row. millions of dollars have already gone to research through walks like these and, of course, the ice bucket challenge. happening today, join the walk in san francisco to end type 1 diabetes. the goal of the jdrf-1 walk is to raise more than $400,000 to fight type 1 diabetes. each year nearly a million people join the walk all over the country and the funds raised through each event will support research to find treatments and a cure. the three-mile walk starts at 11:00 this morning at bay and laguna streets in san francisco. we might have had a little bit of drizzle overnight, but it seems to have cleared up this morning, lisa. >> yeah. we have a weak front that's on the way, and it will be pushing through parts of our northern portion of the north bay. so, yes, we could see a little bit more precip. but all in all, this is a very moisture-starved front. it's very weak, and it's painting a very cloudy picture

for us. as a result, temperatures are much milder this morning. you can see the area of low pressure pushing up into the pacific northwest. and that's where the moisture is. the tail end of the front will bring us the chan of a sprinkle or two. but we are hooking at really drenching rains continuing for the houston area. the threat continues now through the coast of texas, through louisiana and mississippi, where not only could they see some thunder storms, but the risk of tornadoes. so tore another day hear we are looking at some very dangerous conditions. in fact, isolated spots have picked up over a foot. and we are looking at the possibility of still more flooding rains before they catch a break. in terms of our weather yeah, we need a little bit of rain. but we have a second chance of showers favoring the north bay once again midweek. at in mountain view. 58 morgan hill.

sutro hooks a little hazy. you cap see some of the cloud cover. and with numbers in the low 50s it's warmer for you. santa rosa and napa, it was in the 40s yesterday. and it's 61 degrees in livermore. you probably are noting the difference with about a six-degree temperature change from this time yesterday. the exploratorium camera with some of the cloud core. a little bit of drizzle. and by the afternoon we are sunnier and we will look for dry conditions with temperatures in the 60s and 70s around the bay. the next system arrives tuesday into wednesday. look at the cloud core from the bay area and the central coast, into southern california. the mountains will pick up a few showers later today and we will look for the possibility of a better chance in the north bay from the second system. as we go through the rest of the morning hours you notice the cloud cover beginning to thin out with some of the sprinkles up to the north. it should be a pretty decent afternoon and slightly cooler. so here is the remnants of olaf.

it's a dying hurricane in the pacific. here come the front. we go through monday and tuesday, looks like it's holding together pretty good and then it splits. by the time it heads our way at 6:00 on wednesday, we will get a little precip. some lax to go south, some looks to go north. with he are painting a wetter picture in the north bay. hayward about a degree or two cooler. look for mid-70s for concord. livermore 78 degrees. 72 san rafael and low 70s. about 9 degrees cooler in santa rosa to the. the accuweather seven-day forecast a little cooler ask cloudier for some of you to start. actually warmer this morning and the cooler average temperatures despite a sunnier afternoon today. and looking at the temperatures warm up ahead of the next system come wednesday and then still 70s thursday. warmer and dry for halloween. >> so you thought that system on wednesday was going to be a bigger deal than it's turning out to be? yeah. looks like all last week it was

katie perry to rally support. but bernie sanders is now taking some shots at hillary. that the coming up. see you soon >> thank you. the u.s. coast guard recently spot add cluster of 20 great white sharks swimming together offshore near pacifica. according to the san francisco chronicle, the sighting comes after cell phone video earlier this month captured a great white shark eating a seal in the san francisco bay near alcatraz. the sharks were spotted nine days ago near pacifica. only about 100 yards offshore. they were between so and 18 feet long. er year around this time sharks return from the deep ocean to feed at the farallon islands about 20 miles west of san francisco. >> the san diego chargers plan to file a specific request to louve to los angeles.

they have proposed sharing a yet-to-be-built stadium in the l.a. area. a newspaper, the union tribune, reports a chargers officials says they will ask the nfl to approve the move in january. this as a third team. the st. louis rams also are considering a move to l.a. all three franchises have laid in l.a. in the past. a woman in new jersey expecting a box of hair products she ordered online got a much more surprising delivery last week. inside the box, 50 pounds of marijuana. the homeowner said it wasn't addressed to her. she has no idea who sent it, so she called police. the pot has a street value up to $100,000. the police department has posted pictures of the pot on its facebook page, inviting the person expect being the package to come to police headquarters to claim it. of course, so far no takers. much more ahead on the abc7 sunday morning news.

>> welcome back, everyone. we are starting this half-hour with a look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi, everyone. low clouds and high clouds with mid-level clouds making for a very cloudy and mild start this morning. it's a very weak cold front that will be pushing through the north bay, providing perhaps a few isolated sprinkles many but behind it it's dryer and sunnier for your sunday around. a little cooler. the exploratorium camera, 51 in santa rosa. that's warmer than yesterday at this time with 61 in livermore. that's about 6 degrees warmer and in between mid-and up i were 50s. we will talk about more 70s in the forecast today. the other chance of rain coming midweek and halloween all coming up. carolyn. >> lisa, thank you. the big weather story is elsewhere. much of the texas heartland is under flash flood watch this morning with remnants of patricia on the move, dumping more rain across a roaming already saturated from earlier

storms. abc news reporter elizabeth herr is joining us live in houston with the latest. good morning, elizabeth. >> carolyn, good morning to you. we have some good news. according to forecasters here, they tell us some areas got as much as nine inches of rain in the last 24 hours alone, but the heavy rain has finally moved out of this area. >> overnight more rain, soaking parts of texas, already drenched with rainfall. in san antonio to dallas, floodwaters are inundating streets, and stalling cars and lead to go dramatic rescue after rescue. >> i was just hoping not to drown or fall because the current was flowing pretty hard. >> we have our hazardous materials experts monitoring the scene. >> crews are using foam to control diesel spilling from a derailed train south of dallas.

>> we know there will be extreme damage to the roadways throughout the county. >> and as the rain took out roadways, officials are relying on txdot trucks and civilians to navigate flooded streets. the severe weather also produced this funnel cloud in harris county. strong winds now being blamed for tearing down fences, blowing off roofs and littering the streets with debris. >> the whole house started to shake and i looked out the window and all you saw was a whirlwind of trash. >> this is what is left of patricia moving across texas. some coastal areas threatening to get a foot or more of rain, the houston mayor is prepared for the worst. >> all of our first responders are on notice they may have to deploy. >> what is back there, that is a sports field partially submerged. there's a tree that was uprooted and floated down to this spot. this is some of the damage as a result of the bay use and creeks

sweeling overnight. carolyn, back to you. >> elizabeth, thanks for joining us this morning. more news now. president obama is calling for less class time dedicated to standardized testing. according to a study, students spend about 20 to 25 hours per school year taking those standardized tests. the president wants to change that. right now testing amounts to 2.3% of classroom time for the average eighth grader. the president said testing should only take up 2%. >> because learning is about so much more than just filling in the right bubble. so we are going to work with states, school districts, teachers and parents to make sure that we're not obsessing about testing. >> tomorrow president obama will meet with the u.s. secretary of education, school officials and

teachers to work on reducing testing time. the president said he hopes this can help educators use their creativity to make sure students are prepared for success. republican presidential candidate ben carson is now leading in a key iowa poll. this morning donald trump will certainly have a lot to say about that. on "this week" trump joins the conversation talking about his campaign for the white house, three days before the next debate. you can catch "this week" with george stephanopoulos right here on abc7 at 8:00 this morning. some very happy birds are back at home in the bay area this weekend after more than a month in rehab. abc7 news reporter jonathan bloom has more on what was wrong and the mystery surrounding it. >> russ curtis let his -year-old do the honors. releasing 10 common murres back to their home in san francisco bay. >> nice. [bird calling] >> that's what we want to hear.

>> call it a bird's way of thank you and good-bye. >> the sound they make is a happy sound and it's been happy. these birds have been with us for four or five weeks. >> they have been at the international bird rescue in fairfield. many being fed with tubes. they regained their strength. the murres being that look a little like penguins, were found along the bay area beaches. >> people would often say i saw a penguin on the beach. what is it doing on the beach? >> these birds should not be on the beach. they should be on the ocean fishing. >> murres can dive hundreds. feet under water to find fish, but these ones found were hungry. >> they are telling us there's a change going on in the environment and they are having a harder time finding fish. >> the one lingering question is why? to take in ten birds in a month would be normal but they have taken in 450 in a three-month period. >> we've never had this many birds this time of the year come in. >> they have a theory. >> climate change. >> the ocean temperatures were five to ten degrees warmer.

we believe because of the warmth the fish of diving deeper. fish they fish more. >> and as like pelicans will show up later. at least 60 are still being nursed back to health. in a few weeks the hard work will pay off. >> it goes by in about ten seconds and they are back out in the wild, but it's a feeling that lasts a lot longer than that the >> in sausalito, jonathan bloom, abc7 news. >> happening today you can get a first-hand look at how a habitat can be brought back to life in sonoma county. this area was used for cattle grazing and almost became a casino before it was purchased back in 2005. conservationists spent $18 million restoring it and now a man made breach in the levy will allow satellite water from the bay to fill a tidal marsh. its expected to take 24 hours to fill the marsh. you can witness the returning tides today between 2:00 p.m. and 6:30.
