florida church group were on their way to a weekend retreat when a tire blew and the driver lost control of the van. ten-two adults died, ten teenagers were hospitalized. investigators say the church never got the word that that tire had been recalled a year earlier. investigators for the national transportation safety board said it happens all the time. millions of tires are under safety recall, but the vast majority of owners never find out about it. >> that system's not working. it's completely broken. >> somebody lost control of their vehicle. >> reporter: the ntsb investigation also found motorists are in the dark about the potential dangers of tires that look new but are actually quite old. the tire that failed in this california accident was eight years old. killing a young mother. >> my grandson is growing up without his mother. >> reporter: safety engineers say tires can begin to break down after six years even if it's been in storage and never driven on and it's not easy to figure out a tire's age. it's actually hidden in a code

good morning. i' good morning. i'm kendis gibson. >> and i'm reena ninan. here are some of the top stories we're following on "world news now." classroom confrontation. air south carolina officer is facing a federal civil rights investigation and outrage after this violent arrest knocking a 16-year-old girl to the ground in her chair and dragging her. a full report coming up. the u.s. appears ready to wage a more aggressive campaign against isis in iraq and syria. it could mean more ground action for u.s. special forces similar to the prison raid carried out last week. and for the third time in seven years general motors is recalling older vehicles that can leak oil and catch fire, in some instances damaging garages and homes. the first two attempts to fix the problem failed.

and the kansas city royals were two outs away from winning game 1 of the world series against the mets when alex gordon had the a game-tying home run. five innings later the royals won it 5-4. game 2 is tonight. those are some of our top stories on this wednesday october 28th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." good morning on this wednesday. >> hump day. >> hump day. thank you for correcting me. >> you're welcome. >> i was ready for the weekend. i was going to tell everybody it's friday. >> we always are. serious news. the video is so hard to watch every time we play this. it's the violent takedown in a south carolina classroom. there's outrage from across the country after a teenage girl was manhandled by an officer. >> whether you're a parent or not it was tough to watch. that officer, by the way-s now under federal investigation. he may found out today if he's

out of a job after the controversial arrest was captured on camera. with more now, abc's mary bruce. >> reporter: it was 11:00 a.m. algebra class at spring valley high school in columbia, south carolina. authorities say a 16-year-old female student was being disruptive. some students say she was texting, chewing gum. she's asked to leave but refuses. finally, a school resource officer is called to the classroom. he walks over to the student, shuts her laptop, and moves it away. she refuses several more times. that's when the situation escalates. >> either you're going to come with me or i'm going to make you. >> reporter: he grabs her arm she puts her hand up and he violently flips her desk, dragging her across the room and detaining her until she is released to her parents. >> behind your back. >> reporter: give me your hands the officer repeats four times. you can see the other students frozen watching in silence. >> everybody was scared. deputy fields came in there, we all knew what was about to happen. >> reporter: the girl's lawyer tells us she was physically injured and had to go to the

hospital. >> her arm was in a cast. she got a band-aid on her forehead from the rug burn she sustained. her neck and back are both in pain. this is a child. this is a child that was treated by a monster in a way i've never seen before. >> reporter: one student did try to defend her classmate, stepping in, only to be arrested herself. >> they got her out the classroom. then he came back and he was like, you want some of this too? and then he just said you're going to jail too. and he put me in handcuffs, and i just walked out. >> reporter: the school resource officer, identified as 34-year-old ben fields, a deputy sheriff and football coach at the high school. last year he was honored for being an exceptional role model. but there have been red flags. he's been sued in the past. in 2007 fields was accused of using excessive force. in that case the jury sided with fields. the fbi has been called in to aid in the investigation. the sheriff's department is interviewing students and reviewing all videos, including one they say shows the student striking the officer with her fist. school officials are outraged. >> what we all watched on that shamefully shocking video is

reprehensible, unforgivable, and inconsistent with everything that this district stands for. >> reporter: deputy fields is now on unpaid administrative leave, banned from this high school here and all others in this district as the fbi and justice department investigate. mary bruce, abc news, columbia, south carolina. and president obama is commenting about how viral videos are impacting police officers across the country. speaking at a police chiefs conference in chicago, the president said the irresponsible actions of some cops overshadow the good work performed by most law enforcement officials. and he pointed out that effective police work rarely makes it on the evening news. the third republican presidential debate will -- is tonight at the university of colorado. as front-runner donald trump will again be at the center but maybe for the last time. we don't know. a new poll says ben carson is gaining on him. it's your voice your vote with

abc's lana zak. >> reporter: it is a major upset for republican donald trump. after months of trump holding a sizable lead in all polls, ben carson has taken over the top position. according to a new "new york times"/cbs news national poll, carson has a four-point lead at 26% to trump's 22%. >> well, i'd rather be on top than below. but you know, i do realize that you know, it's a marathon. we're still, you know, more than a year away from the election. >> reporter: this echoes the shift seen in iowa, where carson has already taken the lead. in sioux falls, iowa trump was on the defensive. >> you know, we're doing well. iowa, will you get your numbers up, please? [ cheers and applause ] >> reporter: campaign critics have been saying trump flip-flopped on medicare and is out of touch after a monday town hall in which he described starting off his career with "a small loan of $1 million" from his father. meanwhile, contenders like marco

rubio, jeb bush, and john kasich are trying to convince voters their government experience and demeanor are more befitting of the oval office. and speak of john kasich, he is getting fired up in advance of today's debate. normally mild-mannered out there on the trail, now hitting his republican rivals hard, saying "i've had it with these people" and questioning what has happened to our party. reena, kendis? >> all right, lana, thank you. they're bracing for more flooding today in coastal south carolina. a combination of rain and wind plus one of the highest tides on record sent water into basements and across roadways. many cars, as you can see there, stalled. some because drivers ignored warning signs. this by the way, is the second wave of flooding for south carolina's low country this month alone. and the southeast of course isn't the only area that will see rain today. >> downpours and gusty winds hit the northeast, starting right around the morning rush hour.

>> oh, my god. >> he is understandably shaken up. and to southern california. a high school football player is struggling to recover after being injured during a game. josh nava suffered a blow to the head friday night. coaches say he was wearing one of the high-tech helmets that is supposed to alert them about severe impacts but for some reason the sensors in his helmet were not working. american women's soccer legend abby wambach is retiring exactly the way she said she wanted to, as a champion. wambach was at the white house yesterday, celebrating the summer's world cup victory with her teammates and president obama. soon after the 35-year-old wambach announced her retirement from soccer. oh, say it ain't so. i was hoping she'd stick around for a little bit longer. but she leaves as international soccer's career leading scorer, both among men and women. wambach has scored 184 goals. her final match will be on december 16th in new orleans against china. i should say her instagram account was fascinating today. she was holding an adorable baby, and she said "next

the new nba season got off to a start last night with the defending champions the golden state warriors unveiling their championship banner and receiving their rings. lots of bling there. when it came to the game, steph curry showed he's ready to go. curry scored 40 points as warriors opened their title defense, beating the new orleans pelicans 111-95. and president obama was also in attendance at courtside last night in chicago as his beloved bulls opened their season against lebron james and the cleveland cavaliers. late in the game james drove and was blocked by chicago's pau gasol. the bulls hold on for the win. they take this one 97-95. >> good game. >> derrick rose still out? >> what's that? >> rose. chicago player. there's no doubt that for

the owners of professional sports teams it's a game almost exclusively for millionaires and billionaires. >> but a former nba cheerleader is taking her rich bosses to court. suing the milwaukee bucks, alleging that the team essentially paid her less than minimum wage. abc's mara schiavocampo with her story p. >> reporter: professional basketball is big business, with team salary caps at $70 million. players and coaches often scoring multimillion-dollar salary. but one nba entertainer is calling a foul on low pay. former milwaukee bucks cheerleader lauren harrington filing a lawsuit against the team for allegedly being paid less than minimum wage. >> they hold you to such a high standard, but yet that's what they pay you. it is kind of disheartening. and they expect to you put in so much time and so much effort for it. >> reporter: in the suit, the first of its kind in the nba, herington says it was more like a full-time job with part-time pay.

and she spent hours practicing, prepping, and performing but was paid only $65 per home game, $30 for practices, and $50 for special appearances. which she claims was an average of $3 to $5 an hour for the time she worked. well below wisconsin's $7.25 minimum wage. also claiming she was paid nothing for the required maintenance. >> they didn't pay for the haircuts, the nails, the tanning. we're dealing with women who are 19, 20, 21 years old, really don't have the resources to pay for those things. >> reporter: the nfl faced similar claims last year, when a former cheerleader sued the oakland raiders. suits against the buffalo bills, the jets, the tampa bay buccaneers, and the cincinnati bengals followed. the bills and the jets suits are still pending while the others have settled. >> you hear the allegation that's some of these women are not even getting minimum wage.

i don't think that there's any fan in the country who would say that that's fair. >> reporter: in a statement the milwaukee bucks tell abc news, "we treat all of our employees fairly, including our bucks dancers, and pay them fairly and in compliance with federal and state law." the nba also telling us, "we work with our teams to ensure that they comply with all applicable wage and working condition laws." mara schiavocampo, abc news, new york. >> what a discrepancy. coming up, getting buried alive. >> trick or treat? well, probably neither. the tv stunt. next.

way right now after allegations of excessive force and racial bias. and the officer who slammed a 16-year-old girl to the floor and dragged her across the room. could find out today if he'll lose his job. with more here's abc's karen travers. >> reporter: one spring valley high school student who witnessed the police takedown tells abc news it all started when his teacher asked the female student to turn over her phone and she refused. >> she said, "i'm not doing anything," you know, "please. you don't have to take my phone." >> reporter: the teacher then asked a school administrator to help. he also asked the student to leave. and again, she refused. that's when ben fields, the school resource officer, got called in, and things escalated. >> you're going to come with me, or i'm going to make you. >> reporter: cell phone video shows fields grabbing the student by the neck and throwing her across the floor. >> hands behind your back. >> reporter: several frightened classmates grabbed their phones and recorded the encounter.

>> what we all watched on that shamefully shocking video is reprehensible, unforgivable, and inconsistent with everything that this district stands for. >> reporter: officer fields is now on unpaid administrative leave and banned from school properties pending the outcome of the investigation. >> this is someone that is physically in pain because of what she endured and the world watched what she endured as she literally flew across the classroom. >> reporter: but the sheriff says deputy fields received a culture of excellence award for proving to be an exceptional role model in 2014. he also says one of the videos captures the student hitting the officer. >> it just shows that when the officer puts his hands on her initially she reaches up and she pops the officer with her fist. it makes you sick to your stomach when you see that initial video. but again, that's a snapshot. >> reporter: the sheriff expects his internal investigation to be finished within the next day. karen travers, abc news, washington. >> quite a graphic snapshot it is.

some new clues in the meantime in the police shooting death of a south florida man. that man, corey jones, was waiting by his broken-down car about ten days ago when he was shot and killed by an off-duty officer who stopped to investigate. phone records show jones made a call to at&t's roadside assistance line at 3:10 a.m. now, that call lasted 53 minutes, but police say the shooting happened at 3:15 a.m. if the call was recorded, it may have captured the confrontation. jones' body was found about 100 feet from his vehicle. and here in new york funeral services today for the new york city police officer killed in the line of duty. dozens of officers saluted yesterday as randolph holder's coffin was brought into the church. holder was shot to death while chasing an armed robber last week. he'll be buried in his native guyana. just hours before tonight's republican debate more signs of donald trump in trouble. a national poll from the "new york times" and cbs finds ben carson now in the lead with more than a quarter of republicans preferring the retired

neurosurgeon. trump is a few points behind, and marco rubio, jeb bush, and carly fiorina can only muster single digits. carson's lead is within the poll's margin of error, and it has trump reacting. >> will you get the numbers up, iowa, please? this is ridiculous. i am second. it's not like terrible. but i don't like being second. second is terrible. to me. >> oh, boy. the poll finds that carson has the support of evangelical christians and conservatives while trump does better among evangelicals and those without a college education. the house today is expected to make sure the next government shutdown threat happens after the presidential election. the budget agreement will be john boehner's last act as speaker of the house. it increases federal spending and raises the borrowing limit through 2017. the senate is expected to move quickly on the deal. president obama says he's happy with this agreement. the pentagon shows aircraft maker northrop grumman to build the next bomber. it's a deal worth at least $50

billion. northrop already builds a b-2 bomber for the air force. the new aircraft will be much more advanced and could eventually fly without a pilot. northrop beat competitors boeing and lockheed martin. the u.s. appears ready to wage an even more aggressive campaign against isis in iraq and syria. that can mean more ground action for u.s. special forces. abc's martha raddatz has the latest from washington. >> reporter: comments made by secretary of defense ash carter could mean a potential escalation in american involvement in combat. he said direct action on the ground may be used. the secretary saying u.s. special operations forces won't just assist iraqi forces like they did in that deadly raid last week, they could conduct what he called opportunistic raids unilaterally if need be. this makes it more difficult for the president to say u.s. troops are not involved in ground combat and clearly means the pentagon is not satisfied with the fight against isis so far. martha raddatz, abc news, washington. a deadly crash last night on an eastern pennsylvania highway involving a bus filled with college students. eyewitnesses say the bus carrying the lehigh university crew team was rear-ended by a car. it lost control, flipped over several times before landing on its roof. none of the students had serious injuries, but the driver of the car was killed.

former house speaker dennis hastert is expected to plead guilty today as part of a deal to avoid a trial. investigators say hastert sexually abused several teenage boys and then, a few years ago, started to pay one of them more than a million dollars in hush money. there's a good chance hastert will have to serve time as part of the deal, though sentencing is not expected in the chicago courtroom today. former rap mogul suge knight and comedian kat williams have pleaded not guilty to robbery charges. they appeared before a los angeles judge accused of

stealing a celebrity photographer's camera last year. knight remains jailed in a separate murder case that was filed after he ran over two men outside a compton burger stand in january. one man was killed and the other seriously injured. a mega merger could turn walgreen's into an even bigger giant in the drugstore business. walgreen's is already the nation's largest pharmacy chain. now it wants to buy rite aid, the third biggest one. if the deal goes through, walgreen's will have 18,000 stores. the deal is worth nearly $9.5 billion. given the size of the deal, it's expected to draw scrutiny from the government's antitrust regulators. for now rite aid stores will keep that name. >> that's a big merger. here's a great story that fits under the simple headline "oops." >> oops indeed. it's at an art museum in italy. that party aftermath. all those champagne bottles were not what was left over from a wild event. that was the work of art itself. it was called "where are we

a missing sleepwalker in colorado has been found nine miles from home. investigators think the

19-year-old walked most of that, although she may have also taken a bus, all of this while asleep. she was missing for more than two hours, much longer than most sleepwalking episodes. the young woman was unharmed when she woke up, even though she left her shoes at home. the latest treatment for autism could be as simple as a nasal spray. doctors in australia tested oxytocin. it's a so-called love hormone drug. on a small group of children with autism all under the age of 8. researchers say those children showed significant social and behavioral improvements. specialists worldwide are cautiously optimistic about this limited study and await further research. wow. that could be a big breakthrough if that's in fact -- >> it could be. and this is a controversial one. it's a health trend and is being called into question this morning after a woman was found las vegas frozen to death. >> it's called cryotherapy. exposing the body to ultra cold

[ laughter ] >> well, i can picture them in some office. >> clinton also talked finance and the economy. she said the minimum wage is not enough to bring people out of poverty and if there were another recession clinton says she'd let the big banks fail this time. there's growing uproar over the violent classroom arrest in columbia, south carolina. the officer who flipped the female student out of her chair and dragged her across the room now at the center of an fbi investigation. the confrontation escalated when the girl refused to turn over her phone. the sheriff could determine as early as today if senior deputy ben fields will be fired. he says another video shows the girl hitting the officer. >> it just shows that when the officer puts his hands on her initially she reaches up and she pops the officer with her fist. it makes you sick to your stomach when you see that initial video. but again, that's a snapshot. >> a lawyer for the student says his client was brutalized, her arm in a cast, she has a rug burn apparently and is suffering

neck and back pain. deputy fields has been the subject of two earlier lawsuits involving allegations of excessive force and racial bias. also in south carolina no state criminal charges will be filed against a police officer who fatally shot an unarmed 19-year-old teen. the teen gunned down in his car while on a date. the officer says he feared for his life. abc's pierre thomas has the details. >> reporter: the young couple was sitting in the car after buying ice cream on a first date. it all goes down in seconds following a sting in which undercover police allegedly sell drugs to a woman riding in this car with 19-year-old zachary hammond. seneca, south carolina police officer mark tiller with his handgun drawn tries to make an arrest. briefly stepping in front of hammond's car. but hammond attempts to speed off. officer tiller fires. hammond struck twice in the side

and back dies. a south carolina prosecutor concluded the shooting was justified, that officer tiller had reason to fear for his life and that he had a difficult decision to make in just three seconds. a justice department investigation continues, so federal charges could still be brought. hammond's parents say he had been shot after his car passed the officer. they are suing, claiming the officer's life was not truly in danger. pierre thomas, abc news, washington. human rights groups are reporting more atrocities at the hands of isis. the militant group is said to have tied three prisoners to ancient columns in the city of palmyra and then blowing them up. those columns dating back at least 2,000 years. and new talks aimed at ending the four-year-old civil war in syria could have a new participant. for the first time iran has been invited to join the discussion. no word yet on whether the iranians will take part. a new round of negotiations starts tomorrow in vienna.

secretary of state john kerry, his russian counterpart, and the european and arab diplomats will be there as well. south carolina's low country can expect more flooding today. the area had one of the highest tides on record yesterday, swamping cars, flooding homes, and snarling traffic in downtown charleston. despite signs warning aiagt it, some motorists drove right into the flood waters. residents say the water came in very quickly and the flooding was worse than the historic flooding earlier this month, and that flooding was pretty remarkable. >> that was pretty intense. rained nonstop down there, and flooding downpours covered cover a wide area this morning from the south to the great lakes to the northeast. >> the leftovers from hurricane patricia are on the move. accuweather's justin povick has the latest. good morning, justin. >> reena and kendis, thanks and good morning to you. a wet day setting up all throughout the northeast, and not just your run-of-the-mill showers. we're talking about torrential downpours advancing from
