after last night's 7-1 victory. the series now moves to new york. game three right here on friday night. those are some of our top stories on this thursday, october 29th. from abc news, this is "world news now." >> a good morning to you. we begin this half hour with the third republican presidential debate. donald trump and ben carson were center stage but the other candidates behind in the polls were the ones who seemed to emerge. >> and they all took shots at each other. it's "your voice, your vote." abc's tom llamas was there. >> the ten candidates starting aggressively. john kasich throwing the first direct punch. >> we've got to wake up. we cannot elect somebody that doesn't know how the to do the job. you've got to pick somebody who has experience, the know how. >> reporter: and then donald trump firing back. >> he was such a nice guy and he said, oh, i'm never going to attack. but then his poll numbers tanked. that's why he's on the end and

he got nasty. and he got nasty. so you know what? you can have him. >> senator marco rubio defending his time in the senate after one of his hometown newspapers called on him to resign over missing votes writing you are ripping us off, senator. >> in 2008, barack obama missed 60 or 70% of his votes and the same newspaper endorsed him again. so this is another example of the double standard that exists in this country between the mainstream media and the conservatives. >> reporter: former florida governor jeb bush also calling out rubio for missing votes. >> but marco, when you signed up for this, this was a six-year term. you should be showing up to work. literally the senate, what is it like a french workweek, you get three days where you have to show up? you can campaign or just resign and let someone else take the job. >> reporter: but rubio firing back. >> i don't remember you ever complaining about john mccain's vote record. the only you're doing it now is because we're running for the same position and someone convinced you attacking me is going to help you.

here's the bottom line -- my campaign is going to be about the future of america, not about attacking anyone else on the stage. >> reporter: there's clearly a split between the candidates what they should be doing during this debate. some believe they should only be attacking hillary clinton and the democrats while others are still attacking each other jockeying for space. tom llamas, abc news, boulder colorado. three people were injured in a shooting inside an indianapolis shopping mall last night. police say a suspect opened fire after a dispute turned violent. two bystanders were hurt. the victims were two men and a woman, all young adults. they're recovering at the hospital. thousands of police officers from all across the country stood in the pouring rain in new york city yesterday as one of their own was mourned murdered police officer randolph holder was remembered by his family, friends and top city officials during funeral services. his body is now being taken to his native country guyana for burial. an intense military investigation under way to find out why a high priced military blimp floated away and kept floating for hours.

the blimp now in at least two pieces on ground in rural pennsylvania. elizabeth hire has the story. >> many questions, few answers following a jay lens blimp that went down in central pennsylvania. j jlamd elevated sensor system. >> jlens is what the army calls an aerostat. >> this protects the national capital region but it's a very sophisticated military technology, classified. >> defense officials say around the noon the blimp built by raytheon broke free from its tether in maryland and began drifting north over pennsylvania about 60 miles southwest of scranton, reportedly knocking dour power lines. two f-16 fighter jets were scrambled to shadow the movement of the hi-tech blimp. >> somebody did try to use the button to bring it down but it didn't work. several things failed. >> reporter: the blimp carried sophisticated technology as well as a remote inflation system

specifically designed to be used in situations like this. >> it could be worth more than $2 billion. this is a huge embarrassment for them given all the amount of money they've invested and all of the protective systems designed to prevent something liking this from happening. >> reporter: while it is unclear how this happened, officials maintain because this was an experimental blimp used in addition is on existing systems, there is no risk to the air defense in the d.c. area. back to you. >> thank you so much. and doctors have found out why form toronto mayor rob ford is in excruciating tumor. there's a new tumor on his bladder. the colorful but controversial canadian politician had cancer surgery last may. it's not known whether this is related to his previous cancer. ford still a member of the toronto city council. he tweets that he's optimistic he'll recover. back in this country, a volunteer school band leader accused of abusing one of his students with duct tape. new york police say the man taped a 9-year-old boy's mouth shut. it supposedly was part of a

lesson on slavery. a classmate says it was just a joke. the soul tigers marching band has been featured in the macy's thanksgiving day parade as well as a clothing commercial. now to the worries about high school football. seven players have died so far from injuries on the field this season. another player from california survived his injuries. there are questions about the safety helmet he was wearing. here's abc's matt gutman. >> reporter: number 18, josh nava, makes the tackle. >> he's down and he looks like he's in pain. >> reporter: but he barely makes it back to the sideline friday night, wobbling until a teammate props him up. then collapsing under that bench. >> came off the field, everything seemed normal. >> reporter: this ambulance rushing the 17-year-old defensive back to a hospital in riverside, california, for emergency surgery to stop the bleeding and swelling on his brain. like his teammates that night, nava was wearing riddell's

insight impact helmet rimmed with sensors. >> that sensor is in there to monitor the severity of certain impacts and also the frequency of certain impact, as well. >> reporter: but in nava's case, the school district says his helmet's sensor did not work. now, products like these are not going to stop the concussion epidemic, but if a coach sees a red light like this blinking, he at least knows to take a second look at a player wearing this helmet. riddell telling abc news, since few facts are known, it would be inappropriate for us to speculate about the incident. nava is still in an induced coma, but at least now, his family says, he's breathing on his own. matt gutman, abc news, los angeles. proof it is unlikely there will be an international ban on shipping quantities of rechargeable batteries on passenger airliners. a united nations panel rejecting such a move even though there is evidence the batteries can start fires during flights. those fires are difficult to extinguish, as well. just a few weeks, the faa warned about shipping quantities of lithium ion batteries.

justified and lawful given the circumstances. the attorney says fields will make no statements while federal authorities investigate. yuan bane ser leaving capitol hill with one last victory, a budget deal. the house overwhelmingly passed a bipartisan.agreement that he -- a bipartisan agreement that he helped create. the senate also expected to an love the bill which will prevent a 52% increase in medicare premiums. it also raises the debt ceiling till after the presidential election. the federal reserve is keeping interest rates low but indicates that there could be a change in december. the central bank sees improvement in the global economy. a key short-term interest rate has been near zero since the financial crisis. investors seem to welcome the news that the fed thinks the economy may now be strong enough for a rate hike. the dow jones industrial average rose 198 points. well, the other game we were watching, game two of the world

millions of dollars in hush money to cover up a dark secret. mr. hastert, do you have anything to say to your victims, sir? but by pleading guilty, the former speaker avoids having to publicly address the ghosts of his past. it all goes back to the 1970s, when hastert was a popular illinois high school wrestling coach and allegedly sexually abused several teenage boys on his team. >> these boys were 14, 15, 16 years old. >> reporter: jolene burdge told abc news her late brother steven was one of his victims, which he revealed to her when he came out as gay. >> i asked him, stevie, when was your first same-sex experience? i mean, he just looked at me and said, it was with dennis hastert. i know i was stunned. >> reporter: she says she was disappointed, but not surprised that hastert made a deal with the government. >> i think it's unfair, because he gets a pass and his victims didn't get a pass. they didn't get a choice. >> reporter: the crime that hastert pleaded guilty to involving banking laws carries a maximum sentence of five years. yet, under his deal, the government will recommend that hastert serve at most only six

morning america." now to another top headline this morning. the effort to recover a military surveillance blimp that floated away and was out of control for hours. >> yeah, it was floating above aberdeen, the proving ground there in maryland, when its tether broke. blimp then drifted all the way to moreland, township, pennsylvania. abc's linsey davis with the details. >> reporter: for hours a mystery. just where was the $175 million military blimp? >> it knocked down our power at school and it knocked down all of columbia's power. >> reporter: 12:20 p.m., the blimp comes unhinged, detaching from its station at aberdeen proving ground in maryland, traveling north, 16,000 feet in the air, floating into pennsylvania. >> it's going to land right in the cornfield. >> reporter: the blimp floating over a high school in bloomsburg, pennsylvania. >> oh, my god, it's going down! >> reporter: dragging a long metal tether, a cable several thousand feet long, wiping out power lines along the way. >> lights out for us at fowlersville and 47.

>> they lost power out there, also. >> route 11's dead. >> reporter: listen to this neighbor's recording from the ground. >> whatever this thing is doesn't appear to be attached to anything. there's a line dragging. >> reporter: the top secret balloon cost $175 million. the program, more than $2 billion. the balloon is equipped with high-tech radar, an early warning system that can search an area the size of texas for incoming cruise missiles, unfriendly aircraft, even tanks on the ground. it is filled with helium. 242 feet long. three-quarters of a football field. the secretary of defense telling reporters he's seen these balloons break free in afghanistan, something that can happen in bad weather. retired colonel stephen ganyard saying, make no mistake -- it was a lot of taxpayer money floating for much of the afternoon. >> so, this protects the national capital region but it's a very sophisticated military technology. very classified. it's the best capability in the world. >> reporter: shortly before touching down, the tail fell off a quarter mile away from the massive balloon's final resting place in moreland township, pennsylvania, just after 1:00 p.m. a 150-plus mile journey from that base in maryland, sending

f-16s in the air and officials on the ground scrambling. it was not far from here, in columbia county, pennsylvania, when the aerostat started to deflate on its own. and now a warning from officials for people to stay away from the balloon, even with it now back on the ground. linsey davis, abc news, columbia county, pennsylvania. a lot of questions over how that got loose. all right. thanks. an attorney for the deputy who was fired for throwing a student across a classroom says what the officer did was lawful and justified. his attorney says ben fields' actions were carried out professionally and he was performing his job duties legally, but in a statement released late last night, the school board chairman said educators and police must be held to a higher standard. and three students were arrested after this fight at a sacramento high school. the scene videotaped and posted to youtube. the principal was pushed to the

ground while trying to break up the fight. he was not seriously injured and quickly got back on his feet. the three students facing serious charges. now to a consumer alert about a half a million allergy injectors that are being recalled, sold under the brand name auvi-q. they may not deliver the right amount of life-saving medicine. they contain epinephrine needed during a severe allergic reaction. it follows more than two dozen complaints. there's also a recall for kids' water bottles sold at pottery barn. they feature images the avengers and darth vader. the gray paint on the metal portion of the bottles may contain too much lead. customers should return them to the store. as you know, kids of all ages and adults are getting excited for saturday and the trick-or-treating that comes with halloween. this is really cool. a dad in oregon is working to finish up some very special costumes. >> what he does is design elaborate creations fitted around a child's wheelchair. he started doing it seven years ago for his sons confined to chairs.
