half an hour ago. the areas burned by a wildfire have a much greater chance to flood or have land slides. thank you for joining us. >> let's get right to meteorologist sandya patel, who is tracking the storm. >> you see where most of the activity is concentrated in the east bay. notice that the thunderstorms basically came out of the north. they tracked across the north bay and worked their say into the east bay. lightning strikes still showing up, just south of the utimon area. we're going to continue to see some heavy downpours, black hawk taking you down to street level. not out of the question to continue to see some downpours and even some hail. pea-sized hail in the inland east bay. we still have a flash flood watch for parts of lake county

until 8:00 p.m. that flash flood warning as cheryl mentioned, expired for lake county a short time ago. a few more showers to contend with, and as far as the rain totals are concerned, north bay gets the most rain. almost an inch and a half in livermore. just over an inch in san jose. redwood city, 1.38. oakland, 0.46. and santa rosa, you only received about a quarter inch of rain. i'll be back with a detailed look at what you can expect behind the storm that you'll need to know coming right up. wayne freedman joins us from the north bay. he took a picture of this storm that dropped a lot of water very suddenly. wayne? >> reporter: we couldn't believe what we were looking at. we were in sonoma county, the sun was shining, then we have

that. now where i'm standing there was a deluge at about 2:00 this afternoon. let me show you another picture snapped by christian curtis. this is hail you're looking at on highway 21, not far from here. st. helena, accumulated hail on cars. yes, it was packed. let's hear from the man who gave us that photograph. >> about 2:15, it was big raindrops coming down, filled the street up halfway to the curb. >> reporter: you're talking about running water in the street? >> yeah, running from this point to the low point. >> reporter: over the yellow line? >> yeah. >> reporter: you're seeing that much watter? >> that quick, yeah, probably 40 minutes total of rain. >> reporter: and now the rain is gone and what we have left is concern over the mountain in lake county, that that rain could cause major problems in fire ravaged areas.

trees are gone, the office of emergency services has concerns about mudslides. we've had none reported so far, but we know of one rancher who spent today shoring up his property out of concern for what they come as time comes along. as we come back live now, let's show you the napa river, as it flows through here. it doesn't look very active, but this is more water than they've seen in a long time. and you should have seen it three or four hours ago. they say at that point, it was really moving. so it's been an interesting weather day here on the north day and it doesn't seem to be over yet. wayne freedman, "abc7 news." >> wayne, thank you very much. traffic along interstate 580 in livermore is moving again. a truck carrying 30,000 pounds of frozen chickens overturned. the accident happened at 2:15 in

the morning on a very wet freeway. delays were up to five hours. just a terrible mess. in east contra costa county, the wet roads may have caused this rollover accident just after 6:00 a.m. one person was taken to the hospital. whatever the amount of rainfall, it certainly has to go somewhere. it filled dry weeks and rivers today. >> and the rain is going to help perk up landscaping considerably for people with rain systems. >> reporter: cheryl, dan, san jose has been preparing for weeks for this day. they've been cleaning out debris from the guadeloupe river and other creeks and testing the pump stations. but despite that preparation, there were some glitches today. the spillway was living up to its name, fueled by the rain that fell this morning. when is the last time you saw

this much water coming over the spillway? >> i think it would four years ago. yeah, that was the year there was more rain. >> i was enjoying it this morning. >> reporter: the guadeloupe river was starting to look like a river again. and the rain created new lakes covering an entire new lane. the rain was blamed for a power outage on stockton street and credited for helping to fill rainwater storage tanks. >> i had a 2,000 square foot roof will be 1200 gallons of water. release that, it goes into the ground where we need it underground desperately. >> reporter: so really you're helping the entire area, not just your own property. >> definitely.

>> reporter: that's how her boyfriend described marley, killed in an early morning accident sunday after the car she was riding in hit a tree along franklin canyon road. 15-year-old lauren smith also died. >> she would always text me making sure i was okay. she would always remind me that she loved me. >> reporter: the only survivor was the 16-year-old driver who told first responders that she thought she fell asleep and last remembered going about 60 miles per hour. there were no skid marks. the chp confirms the driver had a license that she should not have been driving after 11:00 p.m. >> that law is put in place to safeguard these young drivers. but it's not a cause for the traffic collision. >> reporter: all three girls were friends and classmates at pleasant hills college park high school. >> it's a grave tragedy that happened.

and both the staff and the kids are basically in mourning. the kids will walk down the hallway and start crying. >> she was probably one of the best girls i've ever met. one of the sweetest ones. >> reporter: the chp does not believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. laura anthony, "abc7 news." a man hunt is on for a murder suspect in san francisco and police have video they want you to see. they say this man assaulted 6-year-old mark garcia october 1. garcia died at the hospital. they believe the suspect was working in construct shun in san francisco on the day of this assault. one of san francisco's most hotly contested races is for sheriff. abc 7 news reporter vic lee

undercrowded jail populations in the country, the fastest drop of repeat rates. >> reporter: but pundits say he's fighting for his political life, mostly because of embarrassing incidents. it began shortly when he bruised his wife's arm on new year's eve 2011. he was charged with domestic violence but later pleaded guilty to a lesser count. there was an escape of a drug lord in his jail, and accusations that guards were staging fights among inmates. last year, deputies failed to find a patient whose body was discovered in a stairwell in san francisco general hospital weeks after she disappeared. then this summer, a mexican national was accused of fatally shooting kate steinle on pier 14. this after he had been released

from the jail, even though federal immigration officials asked that his office detain him. recently, more faux pas. he had his driver's license suspended for failure to report an accident. and he flunked his test at the shooting range, which means he can't carry a service gun. the mayor made his position very clear on this race. >> i do think that a more professional approach to leading that office is needed. >> reporter: one thing's for sure. voters have a real choice in this race. vic lee, "abc7 news." >> we'll follow the election closely tomorrow. are veterans being squeezed out in san francisco? coming up, the battle that some say pits the city's elite against those who have served our country. and the freak accident that sent three workers to the hospital. why they didn't have far to go. i'm spencer christian.

memorial, and reflecting pools and the legal battle is over the building next door. the war memorial veterans building was renovated and just reopened and while it was dedicated to veterans in 1932, the lawsuit alleges they're now being pushed out, in favor of high society tenants, like the opera and other arts organizations. >> every time a veteran entity attempts to put a veteran service organization into the space, they are met with gating requirements and roadblocks that other organizations are simply not. >> reporter: the lawyers use the nonprofit that provides housing for vets wants free housing, but the city is maintaining it does not meet the criteria. the mayor says he supports it,

but -- >> i think there are charter mandated objectives that the war memorial is required by law. >> reporter: the american legion is the plaintiff challenging the city. >> their community is nor interested in helping the arts than veterans. >> reporter: the case heads back to court the day after veterans day. in san francisco, carolyn tyler, "abc7 news." three workers are recovering this afternoon after being overcome by smoke at st. luke's hospital in san francisco. officials say the maintenance workers got sick in a mobile trailer that houses an mri machine. turns out the compressor burned out. >> the three workers went to the emergency room which is next door, and their conditions are improving. >> which is good news. crews are trying to figure out what caused that compressor to fail. ♪ some startling facts about

america" about his suicide. susan williams gives her first interview tomorrow morning right after the abc 7 morning news. people in the south bay are noticing something strange with their drinking water. the water district officials blame the drought for a dirt-like flavor and odor in the tap water. low water levels promote algae growth, which creates a different taste and smell. the water is safe to drink, however, and customers can chill the water before drinking to make the taste and smell a little more noticeable. nasa says antarctica is gaining more ice than it's losing. the ice shot gained 112 billion tons of ice per year from 1992 to 2001. that slowed to 82 billion tons of ice per year between 2003 and 2008.
