exonerated by video evidence. vic lee is here with the story. >> in three cases, suspects have been arrested and charged with nel any crimes only to have their charges dropped because they were not the one that's committed the crimes. the public defender blames police for failing to investigate thoroughly. police arrested danu he was jailed for two weeks before public defenders and investigators found security video that exonerated him. one camera recorded him hanging on a corner near the robbery. a block away, this camera showed several men walking toward the victim on the right of the

screen. one grabs his phone. both cameras have the same time stamp. in other words he couldn't be in two places in the same time. >> mr. damaron has with the suspects. this man was accused with attacking a man with a razor scooter and tacking him. >> they review the video, at the school, and they write in their report that in fact there is nothing on this video. >> public defenders' investigators reviewed the video and this is what they found. he is at a bench with a woman, who men approach them. he backs off, as if to defend himself. the men walk after him. in this video, you can see him walking backwards as attackers walk toward him.

he was arrested and spent a month in jail before charges were dropped. the deputy public defender says they're seeing more cases where police aren't looking for videos to make their cases. >> there are innocent people charged with serious crimes. >> all i can say is that we have one of the best video retrieval units in the nation. officers retrieved the video from the pier 14 shooting of kate steinle, and cites videos that led to arrest in february of a man police say chopped up a body and dragged it downtown. >> to say they're getting the video is terrific, but saying we're not doing enough is ludicrous. >> they point out that the

companies and workers are affecting the city's housing costs. other cities across the country and world are following this closely. today's election was a big experiment for san mateo county. abc7 news was at this polling place but we didn't see many voters because there was a mail in election. each city had to provide two poll locations in case anyone wanted to vote in american. yolo county did something similar a few years ago and saved costs without affecting voter turn out. >> in city hall, a tent was set up to set up ballots. people wanted to show off their votes on social media but it is against the law in california to do that. now, one bay area lawmaker wants

to change that. it's a social media age in every way. it is, dan. you know, san francisco city hall is dressed in red white and blue, but don't think about snapping pictures of the ballot after it is cast. a rarely-enforced law says no. the age of social media could be changing that. election day, mail in ballots being dropped off. some taking selfies, wearing the i voted sticker, others going public. these voters balloting ballot selfies. a law banning them was just overturned. >> i've been taking ballot selfies as long as i can remember. >> he says his trips are well documented. even where he voted for himself. >> ballot selfies are protected political speech. >> they're against the law in california where voting is

caltrans moved a demolition of the old bay bridge pier to the 18th. they spent a long time detailing what to expect on demolition day. wayne freedman was there and joins us wlif more. wayne? >> reporter: the first question we had is why did you delay it? caltrans says it was explosives, 20,000 pounds worth of explosives they're going to put into the pier. caltrans didn't like the way they were covered, saying they weren't uniform enough because if it succeeds, caltrans plans to do it again. everybody loves an implosion. well, most people, anyway. most of the time. but the implosion of the bay

bridge saturday, november 14th is likely to be less spectacular because it takes place underwater. >> i don't want to call it an experiment. because it suggests you don't know what is going to happen. i call it a test. >> this is the target of pilings on the old bay bridge, it extends into the bay mud itself. chief engineer gets fairly animated on this subject. >> we have a cellular structure. so let's place ta material down there efficiently and entomb it below the mud line where it's not a hazard to anyone. >> reporter: birds, mammals and fish may not see it that way. it's a forgone, educated estimation that 1700 long, thin smelt and other species will perish in the shock waves. it has the blessing of the san francisco development commission. >> we at the resources agency

know that species will be killed. individual fish will be killed. the question is whether it's preferable to have six seconds worth of impact versus 48 months worth of impact? which is how long it would take to remove the pier by more traditional means. >> reporter: if this works, caltrans may use the same technique for the other bridge piers as well. for the record, there are 20 of them. friday is home coming for many high schools, including middleton high. a community devastated by the valley fire nearly two months ago, half of the town was destroyed when the huge fires swept through a week before high school home coming. the event has been rescheduled for the weekend.

cold weather arrived in parts of the state and will continue to work down during overnight hours into the bay area. we're looking at readings in the upper 50s. check out this time lapse view. storm clouds producing showers and snow showers we've talked about earlier. we'll see possibilities of patchy frost in the north bay, mostly sunny days are ahead and our next chance of rain is late this weekend. high pressure still the controlling feature, but notice clouds are developing off shore and unstable conditions moving into our direction. we'll have a dry pattern through saturday, expecting things to change. notice rain northwest and some works into the bay area sunday night and into the day monday. we don't expect it to be a heavy rainfall event but will get a little bit of a rain drop
