>> somebody walked into the classroom saying we all had to leave. >> students told us they didn't hear anything but knew something was wrong when they were told to leave in the middle of class. >> i just whipped around the corner and found someone laying on the floor. all the police were blocking everything off. >> the stabbing started inside the cobb building in the library and then moved outside. >> some students told us they saw the suspect. he was a current student. >> he had like a sweatshirt and the hoodie was up and it could cover his whole face. >> he was shot by a campus police officer on the bridge which cuts through the middle of campus. >> and when we walked closer, we saw the police trying to resuscitate him and bring him back. >> if that aufrgs hasn't been in the location, i believed there would have been more victims to this. >> of the four injured, two were students, one was a staff member

will tell you also, there is much that we do not yet know due to an on going police investigation, which involves our own department as well as many other agencies. among the things we do know is that four individuals were stabbed at the start of an 8:00 a.m. class in our classroom and office building this morning. two were students. one was a staff member and the other was a contract employee. the suspect fled the scene, was pursued by two police officers and was ultimately shot and killed. the stabbing victims all received prompt medical treatment. two of them were medivaced for trauma treatment. and, as i said, related information we have, their injuries, thank god, appear not to be life threatening.

our first concern is for their full recovery. but i'm equally concerned for the many witnesses and other members of the campus community who have been deeply traumatized by this event and are receiving counseling. we will continue to be offering counseling services in the days and weeks ahead and i can tell you, i'm very grateful for the cooperation of not only multiple law enforcement agencies, but around the university of california, we've had counselors and other people come to this campus to provide support of the staff. >> as of now, the campus remains on precautionary lockdown as this incident is investigated and continued to be closed through tomorrow, thursday. the campus expects to return to normal operations on friday. i will, and i promise, keep you

informed as further information becomes available. i now turn the podium over to chief vasquez. >> thank you, dr. leland. and good afternoon. my name is albert vasquez, v-a-s-q-u-e-z. as the chancellor has just stated, today and a sad and tragic day. our thoughts and prayers go out to the victimings and their families from this senseless tragedy. we are fortunate that it was not worse and we thank our uc police officers for their quick and heroic action in ending this situation quickly and gaining control of the crime scene. as this is an active

investigation. there's not much detail i can share. however, i will give you preliminary information as i know it. this morning, our dispatch was notified of the stabbing incident inside of a classroom. as they were gathering their information, the call was put out that the suspect had fled from the classroom wielding a knife and injuring or attempting to injure others on his way out. the responding officers noted the suspect. and when the suspected turned toward the officers, an officer officer-involved shooting occur and the suspect succumbed to his injury. many of our partner agencies have responded, including the living stoppable police department, bomb squad, the f.b.i. and the fire rescue agencies, county fire and cal fire. also, our sisters, uc police

them have life-threatening injuries. >> coming up at 5:00, we'll hear about what his son said. >> also making news today, two marina middle school students are recovering after they were hit by a d.u.i. driver this morning. the 12-year-old boys were one block from school when police say the 30-year-old struck them as they were crossing the street. the boy suffered broken bones and head trauma but will survive. the driver has been charged with driving under the influence. >> san diego police captured a suspected gunman this afternoon ending a substantial doubt off that lasted several hours. the passenger flights were landing in san diego and started after police exchanged gunfire inside of an apartment complex. the airport is now back open to both departing and arriving flights. >> the first flu-related death in california was announced
