what heck is that? >> yeah, a question being asked across california. what is that bright light seen across the sky? >> let's go to katy with more about that mysterious glow in the sky, katy. >> reporter: the people we spoke with stopped in their tracks to look up at the night sky and the light could be seen for 20 to 30 minutes adding to the mystery. we show you video from our abc affiliate shot near chula vista. there is a reasonable explanation tonight from the u.s. navy. sometime around 6:00, the navy fired a missile test flight off the coast of southern california. the navy says the missile was not armed. this video showing the comb-like tail from the missile is a common sight many people saw and you can see the bright flash in this video from san diego county. people in the bay area described

a similar sight. >> beaming off the lake and so brought that it was shooting up in the air and just awesome and just weird. >> reporter: weird is right. it's easy to see how people thought it was a flying saucer or comment. don't expect a heads up from the u.s. navy any time soon. a spokesperson said missile launches are classified and so they are often not announced before they happen. live in san francisco, a brks krrc 7 news. people have been sending us photos and videos from all over the place tonight using the #abc 7 newsnow. >> we see a cone of light tracing behind the rocket. these pictures show a duller light you can see filling much of the sky there and rachel powers shows the beaming light from the rocket and the trail of light behind it.

truck who says he was in that spot minutes before the crash. >> sounded like the car hit something and it was the gentleman or we know now as the gentleman that had fallen between the cars. >> reporter: the federal aviation administration is now involved in the investigation to find out how exactly this tragedy could have happened. a car crash caused a gas leak in san jose. abc 7 news was at san felipe road near silver oak elementary school where a car flipped over this afternoon. the crash knocked over some p l poles, one of them bent. it took pg and e nearly two hours to stop the gas leak. >> loud bang noises and traffic at a call. the best phrase we could come up for this, necessary instances happening now in san francisco's soma is live.

no one was hurt here. investigators say the cause was accidental. and now to the peninsula where firefighters say a man started a two-alarm fire while cooking in his kitchen. abc 7 news was an elm street after people evacuated this afternoon. the man tried to put it out on his own but had to call 911 for help. paramedics treated him for smoke inhalation. two upstairs apartments are also damaged. >> abc 7 news was in san mateo where construction crews are demolishing a bridge in the heart of town. the rail bridge is coming down this weekend. it's going to be replaced with a newer safe structure. work led to single tracking on caltrain and through that construction sight. that project should be done by monday morning. still ahead on abc 7 news at 11:00. >> a bay area coach receives a

commission can proceed. >> reporter: that's a former judge core tedell opened the meeting. 25 volunteers from walks with a common goal. investigate jails in santa clara county following the death of inmate michael tyre, last august. core tedell was shocked to leare county hired a private consultant to do the same job in secret. results will be kept confidential even from this panel, which appears to be doing the same job. cordell believes the consultants were hired to protect the county from future lawsuits. >> the commission's goal is to expose everything liability. >> reporter: commissioners got this letter wishing them luck and notifying them about the paid consultant whose findings would only compliment the blue ribbon commission's work. >> we need more and more chance

front. by 8:00 tomorrow morning the moisture confined into the north bay and light in nature. it picks up in coverage by 11:00 in the morning on sunday, many locations are sighing light showers in their neighborhoods. there could be an embedded heavier downpour as future weathers pick up with a pop of yellow. second half of your sunday into the evening, temporary low in the moisture and wet weather before the second round moves in for monday morning and that monday morning wave is the area of low pressure itself and has a little more energy with it. likely, there is a chance of a thundershower 5:00 on monday morning and that continues for much of the morning hour. 8:00 more showers moving on shore through the 10:00 hour and wet weather confined before it starts to move out by monday afternoon and tape tore isolated showers. in terms of rainfall, this will be a good soaking of rain. most areas picking up from a quarterer to half of an inch of

we are back with tonight's headlines. people talking about the strange bright light in the sky. appeared around 6:00 tonight for about 20 to 30 minutes. the u.s. navy fired an unarmed missile from a submarine off the coast of los angeles. people from san diego up to san francisco saw it. missile testing is classified, that's why nobody knew. a car wreck caused a gas leak. the crash knocked over some poles, one of them bent causing a break in that four-inch gas line there. took nearly two hours for pg and e crews to stop the leak. a noisy saturday night in the district of san francisco around the clock construction going on for that new t line
