and the dental hygienist who jumped on the wild animal and took it down. good evening, thanks for joining us on this sunday. i'm tom llamas. we begin with the race for the white house. tonight, the election exactly one year away, and dr. ben carson feeling the heat after being challenged on his past. meanwhile, donald trump, having no problem playing comedian. mary bruce with the latest from the campaign trail. >> reporter: tonight, new scrutiny into ben carson's past intensifying, and he's pushing back. >> the burden of proof is not on me to corroborate everything i've ever talked about. >> reporter: first, his campaign clarifying that he was never admitted, or even applied to west point. after originally claiming he was offered a scholarship. and today, defending his account in his book about a test he took

at yale. the "wall street journal" raising questions about whether he was named the most honest student in class. carson responding on facebook. posting this 1970 article from the school paper that he says backs up his story. though his account is more detailed. and the "wall street journal" also questions another carson story from high school, saying he shielded a group of white students during riots after dr. king's assassinatiassassination. >> anybody, going back decades, can be 100% accurate on anything, if you can show me that person, i will sit at their knee and learn. >> reporter: carson's chief rival, donald trump, pouncing on the accusations. >> it's a weird deal going on. >> reporter: trump, back to business today, after some funny business. live from new york, it was the donald being donald. >> they don't have my talent, money, and especially my good looks.

but you know what, they're not bad. >> reporter: trump and carson will meet again in just two days on the next debate stage. and questions about carson's past will likely be raised. but his campaign says they're also helping him. attributing $3.5 million in fresh donations from all of this scrutiny. tom? >> thank you. next, to the investigation into the downing of that russian passenger jet in egypt. the bomb theory strengthening tonight. new intelligence revealing that isis may have infiltrated that airport. and the bodies of some of those buried this weekend, found with shrapnel wounds as well. here's brian ross. >> reporter: aviation security officials tonight say there is new evidence that what happened here was likely an inside job. that isis recruited someone with access to the ramp at the sharm el sheikh airport to plant a bomb on the russian jet. with investigators this weekend scrutinizing airport surveillance videos and employee

records for a possible suspect. congressman adam schiff is one of eight members of congress to receive a classified briefing on the investigation. >> isis may have concluded that the best way to defeat airport defenses is not to through them but to go around them with the help of somebody inside. >> reporter: u.s. authorities tell abc news that electronic intercepts of isis, both before and after the crash, indicated that isis was in communication with someone at the sharm el sheikh airport. >> if this is a bomb by the affiliate of isis in the sinai, isis has now fully eclipsed al qaeda as the gravest terror threat in the world. >> reporter: as more of the 224 russian victims were buried this weekend in st. petersburg, officials said shrapnel wounds were discovered in several of the bodies, another indication that the plane was brought down by an explosive device. on saturday, egyptian officials said the cockpit voice recorder, the cvr, captured a distinct but undetermined noise just before it stopped working.

>> a noise was heard in the last seconds of the cvr recording. >> reporter: u.s. experts say it will be possible, and quickly to determine if that noise was a bomb, and if so, where it was placed. but that hasn't happened yet. as of tonight, senior u.s. officials say that fbi experts have not been asked to join the investigation on the ground. >> hopefully soon we'll know what the sound was. >> that's right. >> brian, thank you. back to the states, police in louisiana are investigating two of their own for the killing of a 6-year-old boy. tonight, the officers behind bars for pursuing an suv. and unleashing a hail of bullets. caught in the crossfire, this boy. you see there, he did not survive. phillip mena with the latest on this deadly incident. >> reporter: two louisiana law enforcement officers under arrest and facing charges of second degree murder and attempted second degree murder

after an incident that left a unarmed father injured and his 6-year-old son dead. >> nothing is more important than this badge that we wear on our uniform. and tonight that badge has been tarnished. >> reporter: investigators interviewing witnesses, examining 911 recordings and body camera footage. >> it is the most disturbing thing i've seen. >> reporter: trying to figure out what led the officers, who were moonlighting as city marshals, to fire their weapons at a vehicle driven by chris few. >> hi, jeremy. >> reporter: his son, first-grader jeremy mardis, a passenger, after a pursuit tuesday night. four law enforcement officers in all at the shooting scene. >> that was my little angel. he would just smile and bust out laughing, at the sky. it was almost like he's talking to god. >> reporter: megan dixon, few's fiance, says she and few left in separate vehicles after an argument at this pool hall earlier that evening. a short time later, she says she saw police vehicles pursuing him.

and now, a makeshift memorial, dozens of people leaving flowers and balloons at the intersection where the shooting occurred. both officers named in a criminal complaint files this year by a man that says police used excessive force during his arrest. it is still pending. as for jeremy, his funeral is tomorrow. tom? >> a sad and disturbing story. phillip, thank you. now to what some are calling a high-profile hit. a judge, recovering tonight after being shot at her home. tonight, the troubling question. did any of the thousands of people that came through her court want her dead? here's ryan owens. >> reporter: she spent years putting violent felons behind bars. even sending some to death row. tonight, police here in austin believe someone may want her dead. and they have no shortage of potential suspects in the shooting of judge julie casirik. >> every year, she has at least 1,000 new defendants.

when you're sending people to prison and death row, not everyone is happy with that. >> reporter: police say she was shot when pulling into the driveway of her austin home friday night just after 10:00 p.m. >> gunshots, rapid succession, no pause. >> reporter: the "austin american statesman" reports, she was coming home from a high school football game with others in her suv. the paper says, as she pulled up, a bag of trash or garbage can had been placed in front of her gate. as she got out to move it, the judge was ambushed. >> at this point we don't have a lot of information about the suspects. >> reporter: she did not suffer any life-threatening injuries. but the judge's colleagues are being warned to watch their backs. before she became a judge, she was a prosecutor here in austin. so, there may well be a long line of hardened criminals with a grudge against this judge. tom? >> ryan, thank you. now to an extraordinary move by a college football team.

dozens of players on the university of missouri team announcing they will not play. sitting out all team activities until the president of the university steps down. tonight, their coaches took this photo with them, protesting how the president has handled racial problems on campus. here's ron claiborne. >> reporter: weeks of racial tension on the university of missouri campus boiling over with roughly 30 african-american football players vowing to boycott the team, saying they won't participate unless the university's president is fired or steps down. tonight, head coach gary pinkel seeming to endorse the boycott, tweeting, "the mizzou family stands as one. we are united. we are behind our players." >> for first time in quite some time, in decades, frankly, we are seeing sports lead the way in civil disobedience, certainly for a team to say we won't play is unheard of.

>> reporter: tensions on campus have been simmering for weeks. last month at the homecoming parade, protesters blocked the car of university system president tim wolfe. african-american students complaining of a series of episodes of white students shouting racist slurs. this past week, a swastika was allegedly scrawled on the wall of a dormitory. protesters, some living in tents set up on campus, say wolfe has failed to adequately address the racism on campus. tonight, the governor of missouri, jay nixon, adding his voice, saying, "racism and intolerance have no place at the university of missouri or anywhere in our state." tonight, the university president said, it's clear that change is needed. we'll share the next steps soon. but the next game is saturday, against byu. >> thank you. and now to a big change from

washington that could change how children go to school. here's marcy gonzalez. >> reporter: horrific school bus crashes like this, sending students flying out of their seats. tonight, prompting a first of its kind effort from federal regulators. the head of the national highway traffic safety administration asking for seat belts on every school bus in the country. though it will be an expensive challenge, the agency says it will save the lives of children. >> i believe my daughter would still be here if she had her seat belt on. >> reporter: only six states require all school buses to be equipped with seat belts. crash tests by a seat belt manufacturer says that they can

keep riders safer in bus rollovers. >> change that are belted, they're safe. the unrestrained children are thrown throughout the vehicle. >> reporter: tonight, no timeline on when new requirements will be implemented. just a big push to get students buckled up. marci gonzalez, abc news, new york. now to an extraordinary image out of mississippi. and a frightening incident for customers at an ihop there. first, they heard a series of loud booms. then the lights went out. when they rushed outside, they saw this. more than a dozen vehicles swallowed up by a giant hole in the earth, running hundreds of feet. investigators are still sorting out why. here's gloria riviera. >> reporter: tonight, a car still teetering on the edge, more than a dozen others buried in the mud below. a massive gash longer than a football field tore through this ihop parking lot on a busy saturday night. >> one of the employees ran over to the window and yells, earthquake. everyone in ihop went into a panic. >> reporter: slabs of pavement cracked open, creating a massive crevice 15 feet deep.

ascertain is an app called photo vault. >> reporter: the program can hide as other apps. such al calculators. typing in a secret code allows access to hidden content. files, contacts, and images can be stored unseen. authorities say they have confiscated three cell phones and are now seeking search warrants to examine them. >> we do have a telephone with several hundred images on it. >> reporter: even parents of students not involved are concerned. this 16-year-old wants the school to move past the scandal. she says she was asked to take part, but never did. >> they're just scared. they don't want this situation to define them. >> reporter: authorities are considering suspensions, expulsions, and some may face felony criminal charges. a conviction would force them to register as a sex offender. and authorities here say it

a raging fire forces dozens of people to evacuate from their homes. the stories and amazing video of the flames that whipped through a business. >> light showers have hit the bay area but the storm is about to kick into gear overnight. >> a driver may have been trying to have fun on the slick roads caused a serious wreck. abc7 news at 6:00 starts right now. >> towering flames and a dynamic cloud of smoke seen cross san francisco. an out of control fire burned through a mission district shop, sending people running to escape. thank you for joining us. >> that for a stated at the rolling stark tire shop at the corner of 16th and shockwell street at 7:40 this morning.

cornell bernard joins us live from the scene. >> reporter: 16th street is still closed between south van ness and followsome straighted as firefighters keep a close watch on this fire which left this tire store totally destroyed. they are dousing hot spots. they say the fire still smoldering inside. 21 neighbors who live next door, now looking for a new place to live tonight. the fire left their home. red-tagged by the city. >> i was really scared. coming out and seeing big fires. explosions. what do they have inside the tire shop? >> reporter: witnesses say the fire was intense request quickly jump led to three alarms. more than 400 firefighters attacking the flames from all sides. fueled by burning tires. the thick black smoke could be seen for miles.
