-- kgo-tv broadcast center, this is abc news. >> more rain is coming to the bay area. live doppler 7 is tracking the system. this storm will bring downpours tomorrow morning. >> here is a look outside looking at downtown san francisco right now. it is dry, but not for long. it could make for a wet and slow morning commute. good evening. >> abc7 news meteorologist has a look at live doppler 7hd. what do you see so far? >> we are tracking our second round of moisture after this drizzle. there are showers beginning to move on shore just north of ukiah. they will move to the north and you notice over the past hour or so there are a couple of lightning strikes associated with the showers that are moving on shore. this next round of rain has a bit more energy with it. it shows all of the cloud

cover out in the pacific. those are showers and they will sink south and into the bay area especially for the morning. early tomorrow morning 3:00 on the clock shows isolated showers. by 6:00 they pick up in intensity. the pops of yellow indicating isolated downpours. grab the umbrella first thing in the morning and layer up under the rain jacket. temperatures are starting in the 40s. we will detail the heaviest rain on your monday with the full accu-weather forecast. >> and that could mean a slow and messy commute tomorrow. mike nicco and leyla will have the latest on the morning show starting at 4:30 a.m. >> it is near the cal train station.

it connects light rail tracks to the new central subway. that is expected to run until november 14th. >> check out the intense flames as columns of smoke are rising. a massive fire in the mission neighborhood. it destroyed a tire business. 21 people without a place to live. social media lit up immediately. our community sending us photos and videos. want to bring you another view. this all happened at 16th and shotwell streets. that's where sergio is joining us live tonight. sergio? >> i and tonight 16th street between folsom and south van ness has closed down more than 15 hours after the fire. the fire department has a ladder truck fully extended with the water cannon aiming down at that tire shop just in

case there are hotspots. there are also concerns that portions of the building may collapse. hours after flames tore through the rolling soft tire shop, and their building was damaged so badly it has been red tagged meaning it is not safe for business. they are among those who need to find somewhere else to stay. >> it is not blowing at all. right now they are taking the most important thing. >> they will be driving to antioch to stay at a red cross shelter nearby. >> they needed medications or food. >> the black plume of smoke could be seen for miles. they are now out of work and there are several customer cars still inside. the owner of the tire shop building is relieved no one was hurt.

>> 1960 my dad got the building. >> survivors of the fire are understandably shocked at what happened. but some are wondering when they will be able to return. hernandez says it may take a year to repair the building. >> we have been living there for 40 years. now we don't -- after they fix it up, maybe they do the whole building brand-new and are they going to pay the same or what? >> there are four residential fires in the mission district this year. in san francisco, abc7 news. >> an abc7 news viewer sent us photos and video of the fire. if you have photos or video post them with the # abc7 now. we may feature them on air and on-line. another big fire in san jose is leaving 37 people out of their loamsful -- homes. when crews arrived they found 50-foot flames shooting from the apartment complex.

of the 22 units eight are damaged. a firefighter also suffered a mien are injuries. investigators believe a heater may have started the fire. >> abc7 news was out as the sound of jackhammering filled the neighborhood. this afternoon's drilling and pounding followed a small watermain break near grandview avenue. the water departmentals us it didn't cause any major service disruption. >> some napa residents will finally get their belongings out of a storage facility tomorrow. this is more than a year after an earthquake damaged the building. abc7 news first told you how napa self-storage wanted tennants to pay to reach their belongings. the complex owners claim they need money to pay for a specialized crew to stabilize the building. private fundraising helped come up with some of the money needed to help cover the costs. a little bit of hollywood comes to silicon valley.

drew tuma. when to expect the heaviest rain in our storm in six minutes with the accu-weather forecast. >> of course, we really need any rain we can get. despite the approaching storm our drought continues. the water levels at our res vairs are so -- reservoirs are so low. look at these photos in los gatos. it is less than 17% full. the call to save water

continues, but some experts say letting your plants and lawn die aren't going to solve the problem. they say the state took the easy route instead of coming up with real water saving solutions. across the bay area the lawns and the landscaping are drying out. >> it is difficult because i like my garden and i like my grass to be green, but i think this is important. >> it is one of the many signs that people are cutting back on their water use. but head south to beverly hills and it doesn't look like everybody got the message. >> the idea of your nice little green grass getting lots of water every day, that's going to be a thing of the past. >> in april, the governor ordered mandatory cuts in water usage and the bay area listened. many local water agencies report people here are meeting or exceeding the governor's call to save water. he ordered a 32% cut. beverly hills did impose restrictions, but it has only cut water use by 20%.

the central valley town of clovis missed its goal by 3%. officialses there seem more worried about saving trees than saving water. >> it is very unsightly. it will cost money to some day either replace that with other planting. we have had a great loss in trees. >> he doesn't think public and private landscaping should have suffered. >> with my concern, they were made without any knowledge of how plants grow and how plants interact with the sole and how water moves into the soil and how the soil holds water. >> instead of restricting the water use, he believes more practical watering advice could have saved plants and trees. >> we can retain our landscapes if we simply watered in a more precise or judicious manner. >> he doesn't believe any

plant experts were consulted, and the deputy director of the state department of water resources agrees. the plan was a rush job. >> it was one size fits all. it wasn't the best. there wasn't a lot of time to get on top of this. >> he questions whether the order was evenness satisfactory. he says landscaping uses just a small fraction of the state's water supply. >> so if we never watered another tree, shrub, ground cover, blade of grass, poted plant in california again, the state would say 7% of its total water use. >> to put that into perspective, the state department of water resources says 77% of the state's water is used for agricultural purposes. east bay mud still believes every drop counts. >> this is bad. this is the worst drought we have seen in a generation. >> we saw just how bad it is when they flew over the

comanche reservoir. it is a little more than a quart are full right now. it is just one of many around the state that is parched. >> we are not going to run out of water. we certainly will continue seeing restrictions. we may get tougher restrictions because we have to make sure we have enough drinking water. >> those restrictions can be more than just turning off your sprinklers. >> beverly hills and three other cities were among the first fined $61,000 each for not complying with state water restrictions. which agencies are complying and which aren't? we posted the state's list on our website. you can see for yourself. >> wet roads are to blame for a pair of crashes in the north bay today. unfortunately in santa rosa, a woman died when she lost control of her car. she hit another car before slamming into a guardrail. officers say she was wearing a seatbelt on her lap, but not her shoulder. it likely would have saved her life. a father and his 9-year-old son were in the other

vehicle. fortunately they only the minor injuries. in petaluma, investigators say a driver lost control when trying to go up and around a curve on d street. he valued into a -- he slammed into a truck carrying a family. both had serious injuries. two passengers in the truck were also taken to the hospital. and outside sacramento, steady snow was come down on the road and going up to the sierra today. thousands are trekking to the mountain resort for skiing and snowboarding. the ski area opened just three days ago to what they call the best conditions in 11 years. it is such a welcome sight. it is something tourists and locals hope to see more of. >> the 8th of november, the 9th of november and i can't even see out there. it is just coming downright now. i love it. >> our days of drought and seasons of drought, it is nice to see it. i hope it keeps coming. we need it. we need it a lot. >> that resort says it has already seen at least 10 inches of fresh snow.

more is expected overnight. >> and more rain is expected here in the morning. your view could be a mess. >> says drew. >> it is a good idea to give yourself extra time for the monday morning rush. live doppler 7hd is starting to see the storm system begin to move on shore. the wider picture, and here is the story we are tracking. do you see the counter clockwise swirl? this is the area of low pressure and it will sink to the south and move over the bay area on monday morning and bring more in the way of showers and the possibility is there for an isolated thunderstorm as well. out there ahead of the front it is chilly in the 40s and 50s across the region. we will drop into the 40s overnight. future weather picks up at 5:00 in the morning. mike nicco is likely tracking some isolated showers. a good reason to turn to the abc7 morning news. by 7:00 the showers pick up in intensity. they do see some isolated downpours moving in for the morning rush. by 10:00 watch what happens. we start to see a solid band

of steadier and heavier showers moving across the region. the midmorning hours will be wet. the showers will taper into the afternoon. so by 4:00 we will see isolated showers moving through as the system pulls away to the east. in trms of rainfall, a healthy soaking, a quarter to a half an inch of rainfall. if we do see a downpour set up over the extented period of time and we could like looy see more than half an inch there. we have a flash flood watch in affect for lake solano until 9:00 tomorrow evening. this is where we had the early summer wildfires. we have a lot of burn scars in these areas and it means flash flooding could easily happen there. we have a winter weather advisory in affect for tuesday morning. you notice the slopes of the sierras, it is tracking snow showers moving at this hour and more is on the way. in terms of snowfall it is right around lake level. four to eight inches is possible. once you get above 7,000 feet more than a foot of fresh powder is likely in the

sierra. back at home and overnight it is a chilly period. it is dropping into the 40s as the light showers move in after the midnight hour. and then for your monday with all of the cloud cover and the downpours moving through it will be a chilly day. any area is topping out in the midto upper 50s across the region. the accu-weather seven-day forecast shows we have the morning showers and the possibility of an isolated thunderstorm. if we do see a thunderstorm pop up, the chance is there that you will hear thunder and small hail possible. once the system gets out of here it is tuesday and wednesday and thursday. and we will have cool mornings and afternoon sunshine and a gradual morning trend. the heaviest of the rain is moving in at 7:00 in the morning. you will want to grab extra time and have the umbrella and the rain gear and layer. it will be a chilly monday. >> good advice. thank you, drew. so this next woman is a dental hygenist. surely she has dealt with

15-foot deep gash in meridian. you can see a pile of cars in an area longer than a football field. a public works spokesman says this is not a sinkhole. an underground drainpipe collapsed and nearby construction could have contributed to the cave in. it also rained all day yesterday. people who watched it happen say it sounded like an earthquake. >> everything was sudden and quick. they were slamming their forks down and running outside. >> when they were outside they were sprinting for their lives. >> can you believe no one was hurt here? the restaurant is closed for now. the city hopes to start removing the cars starting on monday. >> federal safety regulators are making a push to see if every child who rides a school bus will have a three-point seatbelt. in the past that agency argued that installing seatbelts would be too expensive and that the buses had a good safety record without them.

no timetable is set for installing the seatbelt on buses. a u.s. senator urged the university of missouri to send students a, quote, clear message that racism will not be tolerated on campus. the tough words follow a protest by black football players at the university. missouri is senator mccaskill's alma-mater. they say they will protest activities until wolf leaves office. other groups accuse wolf of mishandling issueses of -- issues of race and discrimination. and starbucks' red holiday cups have brewed up controversy. they are plain red without christmas ornaments used in the past. a former pastor is criticizing starbucks saying it removed christmas from their cups because, quote, they hate jesus. he posted a video trying to trick the baristas to writing

live doppler 7hd is tracking the storm system. it has a bit more energy than we saw earlier this morning. future weather picks it up at 5:00 in the morning. we see some light showers picking up in intensity with the pops of yellow. a steadier line of showers begins to build by 10:00 in the morning. there is a chance they could have an embedded thunderstorm. we need to clear out our skies in the evening hours. we will track some snow falling in the sierra. carry your chains if you are headed there. it well be chilly tomorrow. only topping out in the 50s across the region. you will want to layer up. the forecast shows the showers moving through and potential thunderstorms as well. in the wake of the system it is a quiet forecast the next couple days. >> looks good.
