abc 7 news starts right now with live breaking news. live over san jose cambria park neighborhood as police are at the scene of a hostage situation involving an armed man and a woman being held against her will. >> we're keeping a live picture wide here so we don't give away the tactics of police and negotiators on the scene attempting to get the man to surrender. >> we have video from earlier showing the perimeter that officers set up in the neighborhood. this all started just after 2:00 this afternoon when they received a 911 call saying a man had fired two shots into the ground. >> he then barricaded himself inside a house with a woman where he's refusing to surrender to police. pedestrian and vehicle traffic is being monitored as well.

with meteorologist sandhya patel. great to see. >> yeah, it is great to see. as we take a look at live doppler hd, a nice wake-up call with the thunderstorms and heavy downpours. right now i'll take you in closer on live doppler 7 hd. cell that's really heading towards the hollister area. it just left the gilroy area and do expect it to reach hollister in 11 minutes. could see some hail accompanying it. to the north we're seeing very scattered light showers near our radar site. we'll take you in a little bit closer. we're seeing those light showers. as you take a look here, parts of the burn areas of lake county, solano county under a flash flood watch until 9:00 p.m. tonight. if they do get more rain, could see flash flooding real quickly. there's more shower activity developing just off the coast here. if you are stepping out the door, do keep in mind you might run into one of these showers.

how much so far? 0.36, livermore, not so much, 0.19, o.4 in redwood city, san jose and half an inch in santa rosa. we'll let you know when the rain will wind down and when you'll see chilly conditions coming right up. >> did you hear the thunder this morning? i certainly did. lightning from that storm splintered this tree at the golden gate national cemetery just a bit. >> it was a similar scene in san mateo where lightning hit a redwood near one homeowner and his dog. david louie has more. >> reporter: it was really scary. this is an amazing story. look at what is left of a 100-foot-tall redwood that was struck by lightning early this morning. it happened while the homeowner and the family dog was nearby. and they're both absolutely amazed that they are still

alive. downtown san mateo restaurant owner simone nguyen just took her dog outside when the sky turned red. then there was a bolt of lightning. it struck a 100 foot-tall redwood. >> i thought it was a bomb or something. the minute it hit the tree, my tree, it goes really fast. the flare hit the tree and my tree, it blows up. >> reporter: when the crown of the tree fell back to earth it send shards everywhere, so some long and sharp it could have impaled them. but they escaped harm. this flew through a bedroom window and landed where she was sleeping. >> i went back into my bedroom and saw a big piece of wood that sat on my bed. thank god, you saved me. either i'm here, i'm gone, i'm in my bed. >> reporter: there is plenty of

broken glass inside. outside large parts of the trunk landed on the roof and in neighbors' yards. the fragments splintered, their shards sharp as a spear. >> i think this is a very close call. i think as long as she is okay today, i'm like. >> reporter: the dog is still trembling from the ordeal. they thank god and buddha for saving their lives. as violent as mother nature can be, she atoned for the destruction by painting the sky with a rainbow. in san mateo, david louie, abc 7 news. with the rain comes the snow and lots of it in the sierra. look at cisco grove, up to 8 inches fell and another foot and a half is expected by the end of today. take a look at this video shot this afternoon near yosemite national park. wow. chains are required in most areas today. >> bay area folks have been

sharing their photos of today's wet weather. sf state student took this one in between classes today. allison o'connor shared this photo with us and the last remnants of fall foliage drenched in rain. now, when you see news where you live, take a photo or video and share it with us, using #abc7now. a convicted killer received a life sentence without parole today for murdering police officer james capoot. capoot died after being shot following a chase after a bank robbery in 2011. jurors found henry smith guilty of murder with special circumstances in july. prosecutors initially pushed for a death sentence but they changed their intentions after a judge declared a mistrial in the penalty phase of smith's trial. a pedestrian was hit and killed early this morning in walnut creek. it happened just before 8:00 near candalero drive. the driver is suspected of

running a red light before hitting the pedestrian who was in a crosswalk. the driver is cooperating with police. the red cross is meeting with residents displaced from their apartment building in the mission district by a massive fire at a tire store. >> carolyn tyler is live outside the red cross service center on market street with the story. >> reporter: dan, according to the red cross, the fire victims include 12 families with 6 children. tonight that agency, along with the food bank and the salvation army, are ready to offer help. broken glass and ashes were being swept up today from the burned-out rolling stock auto and tire store. just before 8:00 yesterday morning, the building in san francisco's mission district went up in flames. throwing off huge plumes of thick, black smoke that could be seen for miles. >> you can see through the courtyard the flames just wall of flames.

>> reporter: this woman says police broke down the door to wake her up and warn her to get out. her apartment building was spared, but the one right next to the auto store sustained major damage and is now red tagged. nearly two dozen people are displaced. oscar and his father greg orio, came back today to recover their things but were not allowed inside their home of 41 years. under city law they have a right to return at the same rent. but often it takes so long before the building is fixed, tenants have moved on with their lives. supervisor david compost represents the mission district which has recently had several major residential fires. he's considering measures to possibly change repair requirements. >> if there's something we can do to expedite that process

because there are protections that are in place, but unless the property is actually repaired within a period of time, those protections become meaningless to the people who have been displaced. >> i grew up in this city. i don't want to leave the city. >> reporter: in san francisco, carolyn tyler, abc 7 news. a fire in a garage gutted a san francisco duplex this morning. this happened near ocean beach. firefighters battled that fire for more than half an hour before they were able to get it under control. two of the units suffered extensive damage. police are looking for a man who broke into a 24-hour mcdonald's on mission street in sort of a store invasion robbery. the man broke the front glass door at 4:00 a.m. and forced employees into a back room at gun point and stole cash from the safe and ran off. no one was hurt during this robbery. anyone landing at mineta international airport today should not plan on catching a

cab. cab drivers are striking regarding ride sharing services such as uber and lyft. the requirements have prevented the companies from serving the airport. today's strike caught passengers by surprise. >> we just got a flight in and realized the taxis are on strike. so we're trying to figure out how we're going to get to work this morning. this rain makes things more complicated. >> san jose is the only bay area airport without ride sharing services such as uber and lyft. racketeering, corruption and murder. the bay area trial gaining national attention. the public outcry over race relations. why one university leader is now stepping down. i'm spencer christian at the marin food bank where food is being sorted and packedor

first witnesses this afternoon. among them two cops who describe the old chinatown murder that shimp boy is accused of ordering. both prosecutors and the defense laid out their cases before the jury and a packed courtroom. raymond cho, better known as shrimp boy sat impassively as the federal prosecutor listed the charges against him. money laundering, extortion, trafficking and drugs, counterfeit cigarettes and liquor. and two murders. he told jurors it was a gang of people committing crimes. the most important man at the center was raymond cho, the son of his underworld universe. cho is accused of ordering the murder of a rival gang member and, in 2006, the killing of allen lian. he said while pointing at cho, it was a hit, a cold-blooded

murder like in the "godfather" by that man over there. cho later assumed liang's position as head of the fraternal group. the prosecution ould its case saying jurors will hear hours and hour hs of undercover tape recordings between cho and an fbi agent who posed as a mafia member and those who turned states evidence. in his opening statement, cho's attorney tony serra told jurors to hold their opinion until his client testifies on the stand. as for cho's friends turned informants, serra said all of these witnesses jumped on the bandwagon to get leniency. it's an act of desperation to save their own skins. he told jurors the government spent more than a million dollars wining and dining cho to entrap him into the conspiracy. in 2007 cho spoke to abc 7ñr ne saying he changed his life of

crime after he got outñi of prin oni] unrelated gun charges. >> i face up to all the past i have done. and to try to correctçóçó my li. >> reporter: we also asked cho about allen liang's murder. at the risk of being rude, did you have any involvement with mr. liang's death. >> mr. liang? no. >> reporter: trial continues tomorrow morning with witnesses on the stand. vic lee, abc 7 news. and new details about a story involving land owned by governor brown's family. the state oil regulator says the governor asked her to do personal work for him. it's a claim s huc making in a new whistleblower complaint. records show governor brown had state oil and gas regulators investigate the oil and natural gas potential of his family's ranch near williams north of sacramento. governor brown's office claims it was routine records search

some showers. calistoga road seeing a little bit of activity right now. don't be surprised if you runq into a shower. i know some areas are already seeing blue skies. from salinas heading down to just north of hollister, still seeing some returns. in the sierra, this has beenxd turning into snow. chains are requiredlp right nown 50, 88 andó[ 4. the snow showers will continue.d and there are some mixed precipitation just north of clear lake, believe it or not, in the mountains where we do have a winter weather advisory. expecting 1 to 4 inches above 3500 foot elevation. that winter weather advisory remains in effect until 7:00 p.m. winter storm warning in the sierra where they can see a lot more snow. 4 to 8 inches above 10,000. it would be a good idea to be prepared for winter driving conditions if you do want to head up there. from our mt. tam cam still seeing puffy cumulus clouds

nature as we head to 8 clock p.m. tonight. then as you get ready for bed, expect a few areas of wet pavement. 11:00 p.m., still scattered showers. by morning all of that starts to dissipate. we'll start to see lingering clouds at 5:00 a.m. morning lows from 37 in santa rosa, down to the mid-30s with local frost. then the temperatures will remain on the chilly side for most of the work week. tomorrow morning, 35 in napa, 37 santa rosa, some of our coldest locations. mid-40s, palo alto, 43 in livermore. 48 san francisco. when you get going, do not leave home without bundling up. for the afternoon you might need that extra layer still. upper 50s to low 60s. cool, mostly sunny. frosty cold wednesday morning. and we will be looking at those temperatures starting to come up slowly for the afternoon hours. our next opportunity for rain, cheryl and dan, sunday slight chance, monday a better chance of seeing rain.

area. the second storm of the season a welcome sight for a region starved for water. the rain is here. it's turning into snow in the sierra. one viewer tweeted this picture of heavy snow. she'll join us live on the news at 5:00. low enrollment numbers for african-americans at cal are worrying students along with others who hopeçó to attend. leon melendez will explain how california voters are partly to blame. after an emergency meeting this afternoon, the president of university of missouri has resigned. this comes after students and faculty there protested what they say the racial injustice. just a short time ago the flagship -- the chancellor of the flagship campus announced he's stepping down as well.

netanyahu had their first face-to-face meeting in more than a year today. the two appeared cordial in the oval office. tensions were high earlier this year. president obama pushed an iran nuclear deal that israel vigorously opposed. on the agenda today a new security agreement that could mean more u.s. military help in israel and a commitment to the peace process. repa face off again tomorrow night in milwaukee. ben carson and marco rubio are battling accusations over their past. here's abc 7 reporter megan hughes. >> reporter: candidate ben carson is firing back as his life story is called into question. >> i simply cannot sit still and watch this. >> reporter: so far his strategy seems to be to blame media bias and his campaign claims it's raked in millions of contributions as a result. >> in the end do you think all these questions will really help your campaign? >> yeah. because people are clearly able to see what's going on. the number of people who come up and say, don't let them get you

target will join macy and sears in opening to shoppers 6:00 p.m. but this year shtarget says doo busting deals will be available online at target.com. this is another sign of how aggressive retailers are spreading deals beyond black friday. controversy brewing over the look of starbucks annual holiday cups. loyalists are complaining this year's cup are missing something, symbols of the season. no reindeer or ornaments, but there's nothing that says merry christmas. this year's cups are a simple two-tone red. while one evangelist has posted

lot more than dungeness right now. as remote a laboratory as you'll find, for tiburon at least. where the headliner these days is a small critter with the name much longer than its length at one millionth of a meter. look closely, those moving white whiskers and that bottle are the algae that produce the toxic acid that's moved up the food chain into the dungeness crabs we hoped to be eating right now. they tried to learn why the algae produced that acid. >> it's given itself some sort of competitive advantage. >> reporter: not all the time but yes the algae are producing the acid this year and proliferating in warmer el nino waters. >> it's well beyond crabs. it has a completely destructive effect on the whole system. >> reporter: what we see this year has happened before, although this time it is stronger and more widespread.

>> lillian kim is there. what's the latest? >> reporter: we're in a parking lot. san jose police are giving us updates. we're about a half mile from the scene. but we do have sky 7 directly above the situation. this all started at about 2:15 p.m. when they got a report of a man firing two gunshots into the ground. the reports came from the 4400 block of camden avenue near highway 85. immediately after firing those shots, police say the man took a woman hostage and are now holed up inside a home. whose home, it's not known at this time. and the relationship between the man and the woman is also not known. the s.w.a.t. team has been brought in and are assuming their positions in the hopes of getting this man to surrender. >> we don't know the mind-set of this person that we're dealing with, but again it is a violent and dangerous situation, any time you fire a gun into the ground, again, we have to go ahead and treat that accordingly. which is why we have our special

operations out here to deal with the situation. >> reporter: now, we saw officers get out of an armored truck and puncture the tires of a green vehicle parked in front of the home. possibly to prevent the gunman from speeding off. the entire neighborhood, however, is surrounded by officers. residents are being told to stay inside and some homes are being evacuated. traffic in this area is backed up because of the police activity. motorists are urged to stay away. live in san jose, lillian kim, abc 7 news. family, friends and police officers packed a fairfield courtroom today all there for the sentencing of a murderer. henry smith had already can convicted in the 2011 killing of police officer james capoot. today he could have been facing the death penalty. abc 7 news reporter joins us from the courthouse. sergio? >> reporter: and he did not face the death penalty because of some difficulties with the jury during the sentencing phase of
