the force of last night's impact. witnesses and police say the suv may have been going close to 100 miles an hour. >> i've been in this business for a very long time. i've seen a lot of collisions. i've never once seen a car that has struck a house that has completely penetrated the wall and landed inside. they have now. they intend to charge him with felonious reckless driving, at least. >> working towards residents at 20th streets after a big rig slammed into a power pole and broke a gas line. neighbors took some pictures after it got stuck. moments later, the truck slid downhill, lost its air brakes and slammed into the power pole and that caused a gap, but amazingly, no one was hurt.

>> sky 7 hd shows you where a 25-year-old man was shot to death inside a car in bay point. the victim's car came to a stop along marys avenue this morning. the shooting took place near an apartment complex. no arrests at this point. >> some new details about the hostage drama that unfolded yet on san jose. an incident that left a gunman and a hostage dead. >> live at the scene on camden avenue. >> reporter: larry and cheryl, the san jose police stel us that they knew each other. but the exact relationship is still under investigation. the gunman initially shot and killed by an officer who was on paid administrative leave. police say they're still looking into a motive for the hostage that unfolded at this four bedroom house. 45-year-old lionel ocivito is a tenant at the house.

it's believed he shot and killed the 53-year-old who is believe today be the homeowner. her son was removing items from the house this morning, but not ready to talk about his moer's death. >> right now, i'm kind of feeling bad for my mother's death. >> i am so sorry. >> that east okay. >> the hostage standoff lasted three hours. neighbors had reported hearing shots. suspect ocivito came out a side door. officers shot and killed him after he pointed a gun at police. inside, they found her already dead. the special operations unit was never in direct communication with the gunman. three hours after officers first arrived. >> a lot of times, they'reoff, they're coming from different areas of the city. so, again, the time factors and then the time of the day, traffic getting out to that area, having to come here to get their equipment. >> neighbors believe she had extended family living with her.

she also rented out a room but she was alone when taken hostage. >> every day, she walked the kids to school, he came back. like i said, when my husband was in a horrible accident, she came out and brought stuff for him. just a very, very nice lady. very quiet, friendly lady. >> in san jose, abc 7 news. >> a possible break in a case of two santa cruz county men who died after taking xanax. the sheriff's department arrested the 22-year-old after they say he admitted supplying the drug to one of the vick tims. deputies arrested on suspicion of manufacturing, marijuana sales and illegal marijuana cultivation. >> we're hearing for the first time of a family of a young man who went on a stabbing rampage. the 18-year-old from santa clara who police shot and killed after last week's attack. four people were lurt and all of them are now recovering.

in a statement the family says they want to "express our deepest sympathy to the victims on campus." >> this surveillance picture was taken yesterday. the couple's son reported them missing after they failed to show up at an appointment on saturday. both are suffering from early stages of dementia. police believe the couple may be driving a faded green 22001 toyota camera. >> in just a few days, ski slopes will look like this one. you can see from our lake tahoe tv camera. heavenly will open six days ahead of schedule. and you can credit our recent storms for dumping plenty of snow in the sierra.

officials say this is an important first step towards helping theest maited 800 homeless veterans. >> we're looking to create permanent housing for our veterans, get them housed as a first step and then that frees them up psychologically to think about what are the other treatment needs that i have. >> a list of the most expensive places to buy a home is out 234 the bay area. however, a southern california city tops the list. newport beach is the priciest place to live in the u.s. the average list price, $2.3 million. seven bay area cities rank in the top ten. palo alto 2, cupertino and southern california is 6.

now, check out tomorrow morning. tuesday morning, frost advisories for virtually all the north bay and down into the -- i shoultn't say down into, but into the santa clara valley. so lows tonight will be down near freezing. napa and santa rosa, upper 30s in concord, livermore, mid 30s in morgan hill, upper 30s santa cruz and then the following morning, thursday, not quite so cold, but some locally frosty spots especially up in the north bay where lows will be widespread in the 30s. also, lows in the 30s again on friday morning. a local frost is likely in some spots. finally, over the weekend, temperatures will moderate a little bit. at which point we'll see rain beginning to advance southward from our northwest by 6:00

a texas man who was granted his dying wish has lost his battle with cancer. in september, fleetwood launched an online campaign lobbying to see the force awakens after he was given just two months to live. that effort went viral. and last week, the director granted his wish allowing him to see an unedit version of the film. >> a florida woman is looking forward to a longer life thanks to a stranger's decision to check out a dating app. the two began dating and soon afterward, rich opened up about his friend, erica who was in dire need of a kidney transplant. she volunteered to get tested and, amazingly, it was a perfect match. >> it feels incredible to be able to help. >> there really are people out there that do things for other people.

hot, holiday toys. this is expected to be a banner year for the toy industry. >> toy sales have been going up and down over the past decade. they're celebrating today, the u.s. toy industry is expecting their best year in a decade. annual toy sales are projected to rise more than 6% to nearly $20 billion this year. the growth is being fuelled by the increasing popularity of collectables. toys based on a hollywood block buster films and better technology that allows toys to do things like talk to children. that has some kids choosing smart toys over video games and mobile apps. toy manufacturers are focusing this year on trying to grab the attention of the pre-teen crowd. it has been a long, slow death for beta max. but it's finally about to be over. sony has aannounced that earliet year, it will stop producing beta tapes.

african american men and women. here is the inspiring story. >>. >> reporter: neil is a high school student. he was told to write about how his life relates to this song titled "dear john" by hip art artist mc lite. ♪ >> reporter: at the time, neil was recovering from a torn tendon. >> nowadays, they work on some college applications. and finish it then. >> more than 1,000 applicants were competing for two $50,000 scholarships as part of the education initiative of mc lite. >> they tried to basically connect with this personal connections you know, challenges and disadvantages. >> neil is known by his teachers as one of school's best writers.

minimum wage. and several of those k demonstrations here in the bay area targeting fast food out lets. joining us live from city hall getting under way now, laura. >> i'm sorry, cheryl. this one just under way here at city haul. this effort does not apply to food efforts, but trying to live on a minimum wage. tonight, the berkley city council will take up the issue. it is moving towards $15 an hour, like many cities, but not necessarily fast enough for these folks. >> from san francisco at dawn to oakland and beyond, demonstrators demanded that fast food workers and others make a minimum wage deserve a raise. >> i am here to fight for 15 because i want to be able to help my mom pay bills. i want to be able to pay my phone bill. >> several bay area cities are moving towards $15 an hour, but
