inoperable brain tumor and has been placed in hospice care. so, all of us sending the carr family every possible good thought. and majette, to the 32 yard line. shannon, there have been special moments when'ven the toughest rivalries have come out. >> shannon: the carr family celebrated christmas today, and santa claus made an early trip to the carr residence. so, merry christmas, chad, to the carr family. hope it was a beautiful day with lots of presents and lots of
4:01 pm
love. >> bob: iu, trying to win the game. down by one. 6:15 to go, as michigan just look the lead on their last possession. >> brock: they're going to do it on the ground. because that will slow the game down. they're in this position because of howard, because of what he's been able to do on the ground. 160 yards against the michigan defense. >> bob: howard again. a gain of close to five. and tonight, after washington state, number 19, ucla, keep it locked into "sportscenter" at night. tonight on espn, also live on watch espn. jordan howard. up the middle. how about the play coming now? third down and two, at the 42. now, this is a place kicker,
4:02 pm
griffin oakes, on the sideline for indiana. howard, a little slow to get up. that would be a tough player for indiana to lose. looks like he just tangled with the tacklers. but oakes, last season against maryland, hit a 58-yarder. so, they're only a handful of yards away from what would be comfortably in his range. but they're thinking about more than three. they will go -- he'll battering ram his way to the 38 for a gain of four, a first down. >> brock: this is a michigan front seven without their best player, looks like howard has to come out. lasco, he's their toughest defender.
4:03 pm
he didn't make the trip. and you see the difference without him today. continue to run the ball at michigan. >> bob: majette, the true freshman, downed close to the 34 yard line. we knew this was a potent indiana offense. but we didn't see this coming, 2 225 yards against the third best run defense in the country. sudfeld on a keeper. took a hit, came up about a yard shy of the first down. will mark him down at the 30. so, another play call here? >> brock: run, run, run the ball. run the ball, run the clock. you want to fight, you do it with your big boys up front. the all-american right guard, the future nfl left tackle.
4:04 pm
and i love the commitment to it on this drive. >> bob: howard is back in the game, and he's got the first down. seven straight run plays for indiana against the third best run defense in america. they're inside the 25 yard line. >> brock: here's the uptempo team, still trying to play with some rhythm. but understands situational football. something so many of the spread teams can't. because so few of them have a 230-pound running back that can lean on a veteran offensive line and quarterback to manage the most critical moments. >> bob: howard again. inside the 20. cuts it back at the 10! end zone! touchdown!
4:05 pm
it's a five-point lead for indiana. they will leave their offense on the field and go for two. after replay takes a look to make sure that howard got in the end zone. >> brock: and look at the big boys out front. feeney once again, setting the pace. you have to see where that knee was downed, and where the ball was. i think it's going to be a touchdown. look at the big fellas. talk about camera club defensively, you're going to see that as the ball crosses the goal line, three big boys chasing him, said to their
4:06 pm
coach, you want us to turn this around? put it on our shoulders. all getting involved behind their workhorse, who now pushes over 200 yards for howard, on yet again, a career day. >> bob: if the play stands, it's the first touchdown of the day for jordan howard. puts him on 200 rushing yards even. last week, he rushed for 174, and two scores against an iowa defense that this season was averaging, allowing 86 yards per game. had only allowed one rushing touchdown for the year. two last week, and this week, 200 rushing against a team that barely allowed 81 per game coming into today. >> brock: this is a critical two-point conversion.
4:07 pm
>> bob: these replays are up. replay is taking their time, just to make sure. >> brock: it's awfully close, with the left knee, where the ball is. >> bob: the decision has come down. >> referee: after further review, the ruling on the field stands, touchdown. >> brock: sure looks like the right call. but this is a critical two points. this is where michigan answered the bell against a minnesota team, where a two-point conversion was so critical. and this is their opportunity, as good as rudock has been pushing the ball down the field, better not be celebrating that touchdown. you need all the focus on getting the two points.
4:08 pm
>> bob: 2:52 and two time-outs, will they be trying to win the game or tie it? they'll be trying to tie it. because now it's a two-point conversion, a seven-point lead for indiana. >> brock: that's jim harbaugh football. lining up, put my cleats in the ground, and i'm going to run at you. and he knows, his group that had been so dominant in that phase of game this season, they got pushed around. >> bob: well, michigan still had a script that according to jim harbaugh could be written.
4:09 pm
he said the players are well aware of the situation, for this to be one of the great seasons in michigan football, it will have to be one heck of a conclusion. but they have a chance to write the conclusion. they need a win today. they have to beat indiana, penn state, and need ohio state to win next week against michigan state to have that path clear and in their own hands to get to the big ten championship game. but first things first, they're down by a touchdown with 2:52 to go. indiana has lost 19 in a row to michigan. and getting loose, to the 33 yard line, lewis. and tonight on espn, another game we hope is as good as this
4:10 pm
one, lsu against arkansas. coverage begins at 7:15 p.m. on espn, and streaming live on watch espn. still got leonard fournette at the top of your heisman ballot? >> brock: no, but he still has time. >> bob: going to the air on first down. there's the guy, and jake butt just made a catch. >> brock: you just know you are going to get your best players involved when it matters the motion. jim harbaugh has been in these battles, he's not going to flinch. you're going to see chesson, darboh, and butt involved in the final 2:00. >> bob: rudock, taking what is
4:11 pm
given to him. butt once again, for close to nine yards. gets to the 42 yard line. about 8 1/2 on first down. plenty of time for michigan. 2:00, two time-outs, and already in plus territory. four-man rush. rudock swings it right. caught by smith. fletcher came up to help on the stop with fant. now, third down and three. in what is obviously four-down territory for the wolverines, with 1:38 to go.
4:12 pm
pressure coming. rudock goes deep. it's caught, inside the 5 yard line! jehu chesson is there for rudock, and it's first and goal, michigan, at the 2! hip bi >> brock: big-time players make big-time plays in big-time moments. and chesson, they have an advantage on the perimeter. it's been indiana run and michigan pass that has gotten them to this point. >> bob: up the middle, stopped at about the 1 yard line. it will be second down and goal.
4:13 pm
>> brock: two time-outs, plenty of time. but you'd like to see a little bit of rhythm and urgency here. >> bob: clock winding down to 20 seconds to go. still with two time-outs. the "i" formation with houma. tries again, stopped again. and jim harbaugh calls that time-out. third down and goal at the 1. now, they have a time-out still after this one. so, two plays, third-down play, call a time-out, fourth-down play. that means the full playbook is
4:14 pm
at their disposal. do you keep running it with the bulldozer out there, or do you put rudock at the edge? >> brock: you have the confidence in the run game. don't you just love college football? this is exactly what you sign up for in november. >> bob: in a game, we thought indiana had a chance, but this is a different kind of game than we expected. >> bob: this is indiana enforcing their will, and rudock, having to step up and carry a defense for the first time this season. he's three feet away from evening it up. >> bob: now, michigan has johnson in as tailback in the huddle. looks like they'll line up houma in the offset, "i" left. third down and goal. 11 seconds to go, at the 1.
4:15 pm
the toss. at the 5 yard line, johnson is brought down. and now things change dramatically for michigan. they lose four yards. now, it's fourth and goal at the 5. and the final time-out spent. >> brock: you just asked me, what do you do here? that's not in my playbook. i get to this end of the field, and johnson is not peppers. he's not going to outrun many people. and scales, he's all over it. you give me a pass to the best players, you go east to west, that gives indiana the advantage. now, you're looking at five yards. >> bob: indiana, coming into today, the 119th team in total defense. now, they just tried to play speed football to the edge. and lost four yards, and now,
4:16 pm
you've taken power football, it seems, off the table. now, you have to try to throw it to the end zone. >> brock: if they don't get it here, this play will be talked about for a long time in ann arbor. it will be analyzed if you don't take care of business here. >> bob: a lot of big red zone targets for rudock. butt, 6'6". chesson, who's caught three touchdown passes in this game. they'll line them up in the shotgun. this is the game. michigan for the tie. six seconds to go. fourth and goal. here comes the blitz. rudock to the end zone. in traffic, it is caught! chesson, touchdown, his fourth of the game!
4:17 pm
with their season on the line, rudock comes through. his favorite target, jehu chesson, bailing them out. and it's a point after away from a tie. >> brock: feels the pressure, doesn't flinch. and jehu chesson, with an enormous catch, and the body control to bring it in. >> bob: the point after hooks through. another bobble snap, but good effort by o'neill to contain it. >> brock: the bad snap, and the grounder on the missed field goal earlier -- what a game we have in bloomington, indiana. >> bob: we're going to overtime. when we return. in 1919, my ancestor, marcel tolkowsky

4:19 pm
the 2016 cadillac srx. get this low-mileage lease from around $339 per month, or purchase with 0% apr financing. i want to show you some cutting edge technology. this is a vhs tape. push that tape in and hit play. this is a flip phone. have you seen these before? it's called a compact disc. oh. looks like we're getting a facsimile. what year is it to you? it's old. you'd rather use newer technology? definitely. well, i've got something to show you. this is the 2016 chevy volt.
4:20 pm
it uses extended range electric technology. the prius hybrid uses battery technology developed 15 years ago. chevy expects volt drivers to get over a thousand miles between fill ups. it's got every technology there is. the prius actually belongs on the table. >> bob: while we were away, they put two seconds back up on the clock. the clock read all zeros when chesson chauaught the pass. so, there will be a kickoff before overtime, unless indiana pulls, dare i say, a miami rabbit out of their hat, we'll be playing some extra football in bloomington.
4:21 pm
so, allen, with the kick. and indiana will take no chances. just jump on top of it, that will send us now officially to overtime. what a football game. michigan needed the 2:00 drive to force this game to overtime. and here's how we got here. it began with the running attack for indiana. >> brock: howard, powering his way. and on the other side, rudock. complimentary football, in team football, when you have to deliver in the final 2:00, rudock did. and that whole operation, field goal, long snapper, kicker, been a bit of a wild ride for jim
4:22 pm
harbaugh this afternoon. >> bob: and how about blake o'neill, able to maintain his composure on the extra point, snap, get the placement down so allen can get it through? o'neill, the last time we saw him in a prominently featured special teams spot, he took a lot of vitriol. in the michigan state game. that kept this game alive for michigan. >> brock: no surprise to see them working on that operation. it's been a bit of a mess today. it will come into a play factor today. and sudfeld, you can't deviate away from the run game today. >> bob: chesson, four touchdowns
4:23 pm
today. ties the michigan record for touchdowns in a game with derek alexander back in 1992. >> referee: going to get one time-out, don't carry over. if you win the toss, you can go offense/defense or select your side. heads, you've won the toss. >> defense. >> michigan has won the toss, elects to go defense first. which end do you want to play at? first down and ten in the end, at the 25 yard line, going this way. >> bob: let's remind you about over time. we've had the coin toss. each team gets a possession from the opponent's 25 yard line. and you have to go for two once we get to the third overtime if
4:24 pm
we score a touchdown. >> brock: it may be time for michigan to turn up the heat a little bit defensively. the front has been overwhelmed by the indiana offensive line. when they can line up, run at you, you know what's coming and you can't stop it, time for a few reinforcements. >> bob: if that's the case, has sudfeld been waiting to dial up a play action fake? not settle for a field goal. >> brock: yes, and yes. >> bob: they'll start with howard on the ground. gets to the edge. just like that, it's first and goal at the 9 yard line for indiana. that didn't take long. >> brock: and harbaugh screaming for a holding call on the edge. i don't see it. i see spriggs once again looking for the opportunity.
4:25 pm
>> bob: how about the faball fa? out of bounds goes paige. did sudfeld do an unbelievable job freezing the defense? >> brock: sure did. and gets his 6'6", 240 involved. >> bob: that was a reverse. howard almost immediately gave it to paige. second and goal at the 2. howard. up the middle. to about the yard and a half line. where it will be third down and goal. taco charlton and desmond morgan, right in the middle of
4:26 pm
the pile for michigan defensively. >> brock: okay senior linebackers, time for you to get involved and hit the mack truck that's been running over you in the backfield before he can get going. >> bob: they'll run it again. howard, driving his legs to the goal line. is he in? yes. indiana starts overtime with a touchdown. and it's jordan howard again. >> brock: it was chris wormley that time. he has an opportunity, he's turned sideways, and just can't do anything about the power and force of howard. >> bob: is he short of the goal line? they'll certainly replay to take
4:27 pm
another look. that last look we had is probably the best one we're going to be able go get. it's hard in that mass of bodies to see the football. but here, you get a pretty good look. >> brock: and the left arm and forearm is short. >> bob: ruled a touchdown on the field. it has to be indisputable video evidence to overturn the call. can't see his knees. >> brock: doesn't matter. >> bob: tough to say the knees were down before the elbow hit. looks like the determining factor would be the elbow. but looked like the ball was short. >> brock: well, kevin wilson and kevin johns said, coleman is good. but when it comes to running with power, he has even more. >> referee: after further
4:28 pm
review, the runner was downed with the ball half a yard from the goal line. it will be fourth and goal at the 1/2 yard line. >> bob: so, the nose of the football will be no more than a foot to a foot and a half short. it's fourth and goal. michigan got a goal-line stop two weeks ago against minnesota to win a game. this would be to give their offense the ball with the chance to kick a field goal to win in overtime. fourth and goal, indiana lines up to go for the touchdown. half the distance is not going to move the ball much. as henry jumped offsides. >> referee: offsides. defense, number 69, with contact. penalized half the distance to the goal line. remains fourth down. >> bob: where is the ball going? from 12 inches away to 6 inches
4:29 pm
away. henry tried to beat the snap count. >> brock: he's gotten you to this point. the best on the field with chesson and rudock. he's got to determine this one. >> bob: it is jordan howard. leaping, and it is a touchdown! and this time, there is no doubt. >> brock: that's what the nfl guys like to a say. no matter how ugly your michigan sweater is, you have to agree, that's a grown man running the ball. >> bob: 14 consecutive running plays for indiana offensively.
4:30 pm
all of the plays in overtime. and now it's on michigan's offense to answer again. jordan howard has done something today that teams in a month haven't done. >> brock: nobody really knew him and the impact he was making in a non-power five conference. michigan knows it today. you're doing this against your third best rush defense in america. 80 yards game. that's all they've given up, 240 total a game, the second best crew. 218 by himself. and everybody knows it. jim harbaugh, d.j. durkin knows, the front seven know. and they still can't stop it. >> bob: every time indiana has seemingly gotten the game to the point they can win it, rudock
4:31 pm
has had an offense. big red zone threats. chesson with four touchdown receptions. but darboh, 6'2", butt, 6'6". plenty of targets. it's been more of a balance offensively for michigan. now, they start at the 25. where are you going here? >> brock: you have butt, chesson, darboh, a quarterback that can run. don't flinch, and play with tremendous poise. >> bob: rudock has thrown for 394. they'll start on the ground, though. four yards for smith. dutra came up to make the tackle. and now, limping off the field, latham. grabbing that left hamstring, it looks like. might be a cramp.
4:32 pm
but that's a 6'5", 300-pound junior from minneapolis who has played almost every defensive snap tonight for indiana that they now lose in overtime. >> brock: extended time in the huddle usually means a pass play. >> bob: play action on second and six. rudock, into the end zone! and michigan gets the answer, they're a point after away from overtime number two. >> brock: can't execute it much better than that. now, can this operation execute, it's been a challenge all night. snap holding.
4:33 pm
>> bob: sypniewski is the snapper. o'neill is the holder. that time, much smoother, right down the middle for allen. and we play on. they can keep playing all night, as far as we're concerned. this is fun. back in a moment. opportunity is everything you make of it. this winter, take advantage of our season's best offers on the latest generation of cadillacs. the 2016 cadillac srx. get this low-mileage lease from around $339 per month, or purchase with 0% apr financing. has anyone seen steve? oh, there he is, at the top of the christmas power rankings. because when you enter best buy, it means you're gifting on all cylinders. it means you're not elfin' around. it means you're buying gifts people really want.
4:34 pm
all with the guru-like guidance of our helpful blue shirts. because when you give tech, people won't just love it, they'll love you. win the holidays, at best buy. >> bob: bob wischusen, brock huard, shannon spake, having a blast at memorial stadium in bloomington. michigan and indiana, about to play overtime number two. it will be michigan's offense going back out on to the field, after scoring the tying touchdown. and brock, we were just talking defensive strategy for indiana. you're looking for a complete 180 from what you thought their strategy should be for the game. >> brock: well, making michigan earn it, going for the long
4:35 pm
field, not be so hyperaggressive. but latham going off the field, the big tackle. right now, you can't stop the multitude of weapons from michigan. time to blitz, throw caution to the wind, be an aggressor. get a tip, a sack. >> bob: so, for brian knorr, the only chance, to hold even to a field goal attempt, at some point, you have to create a negative play. >> brock: you have multiple opportunities, the last overtime session ending in a hurry. yeah, i think it's time to be aggressive defensively. >> bob: they will rush. rudock with a pump fake. stop and go, and it's a pitch
4:36 pm
and catch for a touchdown! one play to darboh! >> brock: if you're going to do it, the cardinal sin on the back end, you can't just give it up. jim harbaugh knows, he has to still play some defense. but a double move, a perfect route. fant is looking in. pitch and go, good night. >> bob: the stop worked perfectly, the go was there. six touchdown passes for jake rudock. and again, a perfectly-executed point after for sypniewski to o'neill. now, the heat is back on indiana. now, they have to have a touchdown. they have run it 14 consecutive times. does the michigan defense finally stop the run?
4:37 pm
and do you do anything differently if you're indiana? than load up with howard and go right at them again? >> brock: 14 straight runs, so i think you've set up your play pass. >> bob: turning the corner is howard. at the 15. back inside the 10 yard line. why play pass if you can hand it off to your big back? he finds 17 more. >> brock: and that outside stretch zone play, give all the credit in the world to spriggs, enforcing his will against
4:38 pm
michigan. he's a good athlete on the move. and that's just dominant, winning football. wormley, the defensive linemen, they can't get off blocks. that's velcro. >> bob: wilson, helped off the field. the senior safety from akron, shaken up on that last play. first and goal, indiana. looking to force a third overtime. there's a lot of real estate at the bottom of the screen for cobbs. he's man for man, if that's where they decide to go. instead, they go back to howard, gets to the 5 yard line, it's second down and goal. >> brock: 34 rushes. there's no question where this ball is going, and he is so
4:39 pm
powerful. >> bob: takes it again. now, it might change. this time, michigan stops him cold at the 5. peppers, stopping the run. and now, an injured hoosier. looks like michael cooper, the tight end. >> brock: he's coming across the formation, trying to clip peppers, trying to get the backside cut off. eventually, somebody has to rise up in that front. somebody, this isn't complicated football. get off your block, make a play. and that time, henry and peppers finally slow down the big fella before he can get downfield. >> bob: you're sudfeld, you see them put nine players up in the
4:40 pm
tackle box. daring you to throw, at some point, do you finally, after what is it, 17 straight running plays, put the ball in the air? >> brock: and get away from what put you in this position, and doing somebody that nobody has done this year? it's a one-on-one, one-on-ones everywhere inside. but there's been a plus one for michigan in the box, they can't stop the heavy run. >> bob: if they throw it here and they fail, it almost guarantees they have to throw it on fourth down. let's see if they keep their options open. it was going to be a straight pass, except a time-out, it looks like, was called.
4:41 pm
it was jim harbaugh running all the way down the sideline. >> referee: a 30-second time-out. >> bob: and the coach called that time-out. >> brock: good thing he had the cleats on. a mad sprint down the seeing something in the matchup, that formation, that he didn't like. >> bob: do you think that tipped indiana's hand? calling the time-out at the snap. no doubt that sudfeld was going to throw. now, if you're indiana, do you change what you're about to do? or will you normally in this situation be in your got to have it throw the ball play? >> brock: go down with what you
4:42 pm
do best. score on third, or give yourself an opportunity to possibly have some balance on fourth down, with as well as you've been running it. >> bob: sudfeld, a last look to the sideline. and they will run it. sudfeld, on a keeper. spins down to the 2. him sa hill saved the touchdown. now, it's fourth and goal. indiana calls a time-out. what a football game. you're right, by picking up those three yards from the 2 yard line, now, you probably have the whole playbook at your disposal. >> brock: you said, you're going to have to win some nights when you don't have your "a"-game. and there's nights when you have your "a"-game, and so does your
4:43 pm
opponent. both teams playing to their strengths, and michigan is without some of their soul in the middle of their defense. and d.j. durkin knows, they just want to get off the field like mad right now. >> bob: you called the play, what do you call? >> brock: you run it. just like marshawn should have run it in the super bowl. did i say that out loud? sorry. >> bob: looks like harris is set. sudfeld throws it. end zone. batted around, falls incomplete! michigan survives! hill broke it up. intended for mitchell paige.
4:44 pm
it was 18 straight running plays. until this incompletion loses it at the goal line for indiana. >> brock: i will say this. the michigan coaches, we've heard them pounding on the table next to us, they were very thankful it was a pass. they would have liked to have seen paige try to win it one-on-one than a running game that has gashed them. and mitchell, you put your team in position for a touchdown. kevin wilson, you called a brilliant game.
4:45 pm
you wanted your team to fight to the very end. you have nothing to be down about. >> bob: six touchdown passes for the quarterback. to shannon. >> shannon: a record game for jake rudock. you said, i can smile now. but teams that face adversitadv you learn more about yourself. what did you learn tonight? >> we learned that we can stay in it. they're a great team, they came out fighting, and our coaches said, keep working. >> shannon: and if this was a book, what would you call this chapter? >> oh, man, nitty-gritty. just really happy with the win right now. >> shannon: congratulations. >> thank you, i appreciate it.
4:46 pm
>> bob: a fifth-year senior speaking with the calm of a quarterback that never panicked, found a way to win. >> brock: championship teams find a way to win when it matters the most. >> bob: 48-41, michigan wins it in overtime. coming up at 8:00 p.m., oklahoma and baylor. for shannon spake and brock huard, i'm bob wischusen. the rest of our espn and abc crew as well, so long from bloomington. what a win for michigan. i want to show you some cutting edge technology.
4:47 pm
this is a vhs tape. push that tape in and hit play. this is a flip phone. have you seen these before? it's called a compact disc. oh. looks like we're getting a facsimile. what year is it to you? it's old. you'd rather use newer technology? definitely. well, i've got something to show you. this is the 2016 chevy volt. it uses extended range electric technology. the prius hybrid uses battery technology developed 15 years ago. chevy expects volt drivers to get over a thousand miles between fill ups. it's got every technology there is. the prius actually belongs on the table.
